The powerful concept behind "Made" is the brainchild of Christina Cisilino.

Having spent many years in the world of fashion,

Christina's love of Africa and her belief in "trade not aid"

let her to create an accessories brand with a conscience.

The majority of Made's employees live in Kibera,

Nairobi's largest slump and home to as many as 1,2 million people.

Paul Asunga (Workshop Director): "Made is really trying to uplift us from the slumps

up to areas like now we are, we are no longer walking in slumps

we are now being nested."

Following the principles of fair trade

we train local artisans in new skills

providing fair wages and support at every level.

Right now, at home I can support the family,

I can pay school fees for my brothers,

I can help the neighbors who can't work.

Sometimes we have some piece of work here

and we're going to give them so they can get a living."

Via this "trade not aid" ethos we believe

and then empower the people to create our products.

I used to dream of arts. And everything that is made here is

out of arts. And I feel they are gorgeous, they are beautiful.

And out of that, I feel it's like my life has really moved out of

when I was still out of "Made" I was really looking

for somewhere life where will be controlled more

my arts and when I was given a chance here to make that finally I was

like exactly this is heaven for me here working at "Made"."

All Made products are designed by influential designers from across the globe,

then sourced from sustainable raw material and created within the "Made" workshop in Nairobi.

"When I come to Nairobi I work with everyone in the workshop.

Mostly people in the workshop are from Kibera, I work with

Arman on the metal work, Sami has also helped me developed some new designs.

So various people in the workshop who are then

specializing in different areas, whether it's making chain or beading or dissecting the glass or drilling.

I'm actually working with most people in different areas.

... we worked on how they chain so it was about teaching them how to do chain work,

then we did ... I brought a lot of samples of own jewelry, so they can see different techniques, different way of stretching things

different ways of hanging things, so yeah, those are bids of training that goes on.

Made is really trying to uplift us from the slums, up to areas like now we are.

We are no longer working in slums, we have now been invested.

Following the principles of fair trade, we trade local artisans the new skills,

providing fair wages and support at every level

Made has helped me in many ways.

Right now at home

I can support the family

I can pay school for my brothers,

I can help neighbors who can't work

Sometimes we have some piece of work here that

we can give to them to make a living.

Via this trade not aid ethos, we believe

we can help break this cycle of poverty.

and power the people to create our products.

My life has regretly changed.

I used to dream of art, and everything that is made here

is out of art, and I feel that they are gorgeous

they are beautiful, and out of that I feel that my life has

really moved forward.

When I was still out of Made I was really looking for somewhere where my life would be controlled more of by art

and I was given a chance here to make that, I found it was exactly like safe haven for me

here, working at Made.

Made is a satisfying ethical company, more than that, we ensure that our employees ensure fair wage which is above

are from Kebaria, and I work with a man on the metal work

San, he also is helping me develop some new designs

So various people in the workshop who are doing, who are specializing in various areas

whether it is making a chain or beading or

settling the glass or drilling

Actually I work with many people in different areas

Mikhail and I, we did hand made chain, so it was about teaching him how to do chain work

we did libbeting, because I bring a lot of samples of my own jewelry so they can see

different techniques, different ways of inserting things, different way of hanging things

so.. yeah, there is a bit of training involved.

I think Made is first and foremost is about

When I came to Nairobi, I worked with everyone in the workshop, this people in the workshop are from Kabira and I work with them on the metal work, some also helped me develop some new designs some various people in the workshop specializing in different areas whether is making chains or beading or setting the glass or drilling actually working in there's people in different areas. Maykae and me did a hand made chain so is about teaching them how to do chain work that we did and I bring a lot of samples of my own jewelry so they can see different techniques and different ways and certain things, different ways of hanging things so yes, there's a bit of training work until it goes on.
