Permanent magnets and electric currents produce magnetic fields. All magnets, no matter how small, have both a north and south pole. Like poles repel each other, and opposite poles attract each other. The magnetic force is a non-contact force that does not require objects be touching in order to act. Instead, the magnetic force acts through a magnetic field. The strength of the magnetic forces two objects exert on each other depends on the strengths of the magnets, their orientations, and the distance between them.
