Anatomy Quick Tips: Hips

  • Not Synced
    Hey, everyone.
    Sinix here.
  • Not Synced
    It's time for another another
    anatomy quick tips.
  • Not Synced
    Today, we'll be focusing on
  • Not Synced
    the beacon of honesty
    that is the hips.
  • Not Synced
Yes, that will include some butts,
  • Not Synced
    and some thighs, and all
    sorts of salacious curves.
  • Not Synced
    Don't get too mesmerized, though,
  • Not Synced
    hips are actually the
    most important cornerstone
  • Not Synced
for making good poses and gestures.
  • Not Synced
    As always, if you're new
    to anatomy quicktips,
  • Not Synced
these videos are designed to offer
  • Not Synced
    a shorthand anatomy for design
    and illustration purposes,
  • Not Synced
    more so than fine art.
  • Not Synced
    So, bare in mind,
    there will be a focus
  • Not Synced
    on simplification and stylization.
  • Not Synced
In that spirit, every single thing
    you'll see in this video
  • Not Synced
    was done without ever
    looking at reference,
  • Not Synced
    so, please, excuse any
    wobbles inaccuracy.
  • Not Synced
    Alright, let's get in there
    and bake some cakes.
  • Not Synced
    Starting off with structure--
  • Not Synced
    the skeletal side of things
    can seem fairly complex.
  • Not Synced
The pelvic bones have all sorts
    of movements and shapes,
  • Not Synced
    but, luckily, most of
    that is fairly hidden.
  • Not Synced
So, we can skip to just
    the important parts.
  • Not Synced
The overall feeling can be looked
at as something like a bowl
  • Not Synced
that holds a bunch of your
    lower internal organs.
  • Not Synced
    The large upper
    sides of that bowl
  • Not Synced
    are what I might commonly
refer to as the hip bone,
  • Not Synced
    technically, the iliac crest.
  • Not Synced
    While the connection of
    the femur into the pelvis,
  • Not Synced
    and, specifically, that part
    sticking out to the side--
  • Not Synced
    the greater trochanter,
  • Not Synced
    is what I will commonly
    just call the hip joint.
  • Not Synced
So, hip bone and hip joint,
  • Not Synced
    AKA iliac crest and
    greater trochanter.
  • Not Synced
    That's all we really care
    about for our purposes,
  • Not Synced
    and, for even greater simplicity,
  • Not Synced
we're really just going to be using
  • Not Synced
    the most forward angle
    of the iliac crest
  • Not Synced
as our de facto hip bone.
  • Not Synced
    Moving on to muscles,
  • Not Synced
we don't need to stress out
    over too many names,
  • Not Synced
    but we can fill in
    that gap on the side
  • Not Synced
    between our hip
    bones and hip joints
  • Not Synced
    with some tensor fasciae muscles.
  • Not Synced
    Of course, the quad muscles
    are quite important;
  • Not Synced
some connect straight to the femur,
  • Not Synced
    but the most superficial
    parts of the rectus femoris
  • Not Synced
come all the way up to
that front of the hip bone.
  • Not Synced
    And, don't stress out over
    these complex names,
  • Not Synced
you don't need to know them,
  • Not Synced
    they're just for reference purposes.
  • Not Synced
Now, on the inner thigh area,
  • Not Synced
    we have some other
    muscles and adductors
  • Not Synced
    that form a different
    flow of movement
  • Not Synced
toward the center of the pelvis.
  • Not Synced
    These can be more
    visible or less visible
  • Not Synced
    depending on angles and movements.
  • Not Synced
    Altogether, these give
    us enough substance
  • Not Synced
to draw what we need to draw.
  • Not Synced
On the back side of things,
  • Not Synced
    of course, we mostly have
    to worry about the butt.
  • Not Synced
    You might be aware of
    the gluteus maximus
  • Not Synced
    as the main muscle
    that makes up the butt,
  • Not Synced
but let's not forget about the
    gluteus medius at the top,
  • Not Synced
    which does swoop in and
add a lot of subtle shape
  • Not Synced
toward the top of the butt.
  • Not Synced
    Back to the gluteus maximus,
  • Not Synced
    you can notice how
    it swings outward
  • Not Synced
    towards the lateral
    muscles on the legs
  • Not Synced
    and, stretching downward
    from under that muscle,
  • Not Synced
    you get the hamstrings and
    some other minor muscle groups.
  • Not Synced
We can also take note of how
  • Not Synced
    the gluteus maximus
    and medius muscles
  • Not Synced
    can be flexed in order
    to form a dimple shape
  • Not Synced
on the side of the butt.
  • Not Synced
Overall, that might feel like a lot
  • Not Synced
    of anatomical stuff
    to keep track of,
  • Not Synced
    but, luckily, I'm
    going to break down
  • Not Synced
    some very simple reductions
  • Not Synced
that will make it all a lot easier.
  • Not Synced
    The starting point for everything
  • Not Synced
    will be the classic
    Superman underwear.
  • Not Synced
    These undies will represent
  • Not Synced
    our hip structure
    in most situations.
  • Not Synced
    Practice drawing them comfortably
  • Not Synced
    from various subtle angles.
  • Not Synced
    The hip joints are
    actually just going
  • Not Synced
    to be visualized
    as two floating dots,
  • Not Synced
    level with the
    bottom of our undies,
  • Not Synced
but even further off to each side.
  • Not Synced
    Now, translating this into
a side view can be tricky.
  • Not Synced
If we just do a pure
    side view of the undies,
  • Not Synced
it gives us some useful information,
  • Not Synced
but still feels a bit lacking.
  • Not Synced
How can we make this more useful
  • Not Synced
and have it include the butt?
  • Not Synced
    Well, we're going to introduce
another shape for this side view.
  • Not Synced
Looks a bit like a stubby cannon,
  • Not Synced
    but we're going to call
    it the "tilted pot."
  • Not Synced
The flat front side of that pot
    will represent the hip bone,
  • Not Synced
    and, of course, the
    rounded side is the butt.
  • Not Synced
    Using both the undies and
    the tilted pot together
  • Not Synced
    will give us everything
    we need to build
  • Not Synced
    all sorts of good poses.
  • Not Synced
    Anyway, let's focus on just
the front view a bit more.
  • Not Synced
    You should try to develop
  • Not Synced
    a comfortable sense
    of subtle variety
  • Not Synced
    with the pentagonal undies shape.
  • Not Synced
You can have a set baseline that you like,
  • Not Synced
and then try to make a slightly
more narrow one or wider one.
  • Not Synced
Notice how the wider version tends
  • Not Synced
to slope more outward from the top.
  • Not Synced
    That sloping can continue outward
  • Not Synced
    to get wider set hip
    joint indicators as well.
  • Not Synced
    Those floating dots.
  • Not Synced
    If I add some more
    underwear shapes below this,
  • Not Synced
    we can also talk about
    the variety in waistlines.
  • Not Synced
This doesn't require you to do
    anything different with the hips,
  • Not Synced
    but it's worth practicing different
    sizes of waistlines as well.
  • Not Synced
    Starting from a simple one
  • Not Synced
    that is basically the
    same width as the hips,
  • Not Synced
    you can exaggerate how
    the obliques are shaped
  • Not Synced
    in relationship to the hips
  • Not Synced
    by adding some quick
    inward curving lines
  • Not Synced
that make the whole abdominal area
  • Not Synced
    feel like it's resting
    on the hip structure.
  • Not Synced
    Alternately, if we want to
    have a very slim waistline,
  • Not Synced
    we can lead from the
    hips upward and inward
  • Not Synced
with a sloping line that connects
    towards a narrower ribcage.
  • Not Synced
For a larger gut, we can
    just allow the obliques
  • Not Synced
    to rest with a lot
    more mass and weight
  • Not Synced
    on top of those hips.
  • Not Synced
    A classic muffin-top formation.
  • Not Synced
    The big thing you
    might start realizing
  • Not Synced
    is that our underwear shape
  • Not Synced
    is not going to be
    visible in the end.
  • Not Synced
    What does that mean?
  • Not Synced
    It means we are actually
    doing something
  • Not Synced
    I almost never do
    in these videos--
  • Not Synced
    construction.
  • Not Synced
    Yes, you might know I
    generally hate construction.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
Because it usually leads to less
    creative and stylized drawings.
  • Not Synced
But, in this case, I've always
    found that starting poses
  • Not Synced
    with a quick indication
    of ribs and hips
  • Not Synced
    actually leads to more
    stylized and fun shapes
  • Not Synced
that you might not try otherwise.
  • Not Synced
    This will be very important
  • Not Synced
    when we get to poses
    in a future video.
  • Not Synced
Alright, so we can hopefully add
    abdominal areas to our hips,
  • Not Synced
but what about on the other
    side with the thighs?
  • Not Synced
Let's do a few more quick mockups.
  • Not Synced
We'll try to make one of
    them a bit thicker,
  • Not Synced
    one a bit more muscular,
  • Not Synced
and one a bit more neutral.
  • Not Synced
We can even add some contour lines
  • Not Synced
    to really help express
    the forms of the thighs.
  • Not Synced
    On our thicker version,
  • Not Synced
we're going to store a lot more
    fat deposits around the hips,
  • Not Synced
    which means less muscle definition
  • Not Synced
    and a stronger rounding
    of all the shapes.
  • Not Synced
    The muscles that
    drive the inner thigh
  • Not Synced
up towards the center of the pelvis
  • Not Synced
are going to feel less noticeable,
  • Not Synced
    and even the quad muscles
    will take a backseat
  • Not Synced
to the buildup of fat around
the hip joints and upper thighs.
  • Not Synced
    Notice how small that
    little "S" curve movement gets.
  • Not Synced
    The muscular version is going
to play off the quads a lot.
  • Not Synced
The muscle body of the quads
  • Not Synced
is much lower on the thigh.
  • Not Synced
    And, without many fat deposits,
  • Not Synced
this is going to make everything
    around the hip joints
  • Not Synced
feel much more narrow and angular.
  • Not Synced
    This will lead you toward
    a much more stronger
  • Not Synced
    and noticeable "S" curve that
    goes further down the leg.
  • Not Synced
    Finally, on our
    neutral test subject,
  • Not Synced
    we can just keep the
    mass low everywhere.
  • Not Synced
Not much muscle and not much fat.
  • Not Synced
    This just leads to less
    movement on both sides
  • Not Synced
    and a very subtle and
    simplified curve in the thighs.
  • Not Synced
    Let's through in some more
    practice from the side view.
  • Not Synced
    We can start will
    all of our tilted pots--
  • Not Synced
    some bigger and
    some a little narrower.
  • Not Synced
Adding in the side view of
    our undies shape next,
  • Not Synced
    the key is to make
    sure it sticks out
  • Not Synced
    further forward
    than our tilted pot.
  • Not Synced
Obviously, with a bigger tilted pot,
  • Not Synced
    aka a bigger butt,
  • Not Synced
you can just let that carry a bit
    more weight behind the hips.
  • Not Synced
    Of course, we're supposed to
    be mentioning the thighs,
  • Not Synced
so make sure the thighs feel like
  • Not Synced
    they're flowing naturally
    off the front corner
  • Not Synced
of the tilted pot and the
lower back of it as well.
  • Not Synced
    Getting good at making quick
    little "S" curve movements
  • Not Synced
will be essential to making all
  • Not Synced
    of your anatomy
    drawings look better,
  • Not Synced
    so practice leading
    into them quickly
  • Not Synced
and getting a smooth curve out.
  • Not Synced
    I feel like I'm making
    everyone far too caked up,
  • Not Synced
so let's chill out a bit,
  • Not Synced
    and make a couple
    smaller butts for variety.
  • Not Synced
    Generally, a smaller
    butt can have more
  • Not Synced
    of an obvious dimple
    formed by the muscles.
  • Not Synced
You can also go full pancake mode,
  • Not Synced
    and make everything
    much more angular,
  • Not Synced
    maybe an extra crease
    or two under the butt
  • Not Synced
    for maximum sag.
  • Not Synced
    You're really trying to be
    more down-to-earth.
  • Not Synced
    Before I ever did
    anatomy quick tips,
  • Not Synced
I did have a video on
    drawing butts specifically,
  • Not Synced
so I'll sum that up best I can.
  • Not Synced
    We'll go for a baseline
    butt on the left,
  • Not Synced
    an exaggeratedly small hank
    hill butt in the middle,
  • Not Synced
    and full on Pixar
    mom on the right.
  • Not Synced
    Most of this is just
    giving a different view
  • Not Synced
on what I mentioned moments ago:
  • Not Synced
    small butts having more
    angles, dimples, and creases,
  • Not Synced
while a larger butt is just
    more simplified and round.
  • Not Synced
    Do, however, pay
    attention to the fact
  • Not Synced
    that the butt mass is
    not the widest part,
  • Not Synced
    and they should
    always feel like they
  • Not Synced
    are resolving themselves
  • Not Synced
    long before the hip
    joints on the outer sides.
  • Not Synced
You probably won't see the clear
outer edge of the butt, though,
  • Not Synced
because the crease under the butt
  • Not Synced
tends to taper off relatively fast
  • Not Synced
    as the gluteus maximus
    connects downward
  • Not Synced
    and outward toward
    the side of the leg.
  • Not Synced
But, I think it can be helpful
to draw in the muscle body
  • Not Synced
as the shape that is inside
    of that wider hip structure.
  • Not Synced
Anyway, the crease under the butt
  • Not Synced
    does move and change
    a lot with weight;
  • Not Synced
    it will certainly never
    extend all the way
  • Not Synced
    out towards the sides,
  • Not Synced
    but it will become a
    lot notable and longer
  • Not Synced
    as weight is shifted onto
    that side of the body.
  • Not Synced
It will even feel like a
    much flatter line
  • Not Synced
    that will just follow the
    contour of the leg
  • Not Synced
    as it carries more weight.
  • Not Synced
I'll just throw in a silly little chart
  • Not Synced
    of butt cheek creases over
    here on the left side.
  • Not Synced
I think that's enough of our
    reductions and simplifications,
  • Not Synced
    so let's mention some of
    the main types of movement
  • Not Synced
    you may have to demonstrate
    with the hip area.
  • Not Synced
The main one, and by far the most
  • Not Synced
    important one for
    your entire art journey,
  • Not Synced
is going to be pelvic tilt.
  • Not Synced
    Understanding pelvic
    tilt is essential
  • Not Synced
    for making stylized poses
    and dynamic characters.
  • Not Synced
Going back to our tilted pot shape,
  • Not Synced
the more tilted that pot is,
  • Not Synced
the more pelvic tilt you will have.
  • Not Synced
    And, generally, this is how
    you hyper stylize
  • Not Synced
    the more masculine
    or more feminine traits
  • Not Synced
    of any character.
  • Not Synced
    Since I didn't visually
    demonstrate it as clearly earlier,
  • Not Synced
first, let's make sure that the
front of our legs and thighs
  • Not Synced
    connects to to the front
    corner of our tilted pot.
  • Not Synced
    Once again, a very controlled
"S" curve is great for this.
  • Not Synced
Next, we can do an "S" curve
for the back of the leg,
  • Not Synced
    either shallower or curvier
    depending on our goals.
  • Not Synced
    And, after adding a
    clear line for the butt,
  • Not Synced
    we can also follow our
    imaginary underwear shape
  • Not Synced
to round out both the waist
    and the lower abdomen.
  • Not Synced
    For the record, we're
    keeping everything all ages,
  • Not Synced
so there won't be any genitalia,
  • Not Synced
but it is still important to have
some level of a pubic mound
  • Not Synced
in both male and female anatomy.
  • Not Synced
How visible that may be is going
  • Not Synced
to be affected by pelvic tilt,
  • Not Synced
    so keep that in mind.
  • Not Synced
    Of course, the spinal
    curvature in the lower back
  • Not Synced
    is also greatly affected
    by the pelvic tilt
  • Not Synced
as the spine still needs to flow
    into the pelvic tailbone.
  • Not Synced
So, pelvic tilt plays a big part
in this side view of the body.
  • Not Synced
    But, sometimes, people
    forget how important
  • Not Synced
it is for the front view as well.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to try and make
    the same exact hips twice:
  • Not Synced
one with no pelvic tilt in the pose
  • Not Synced
and one with extreme pelvic tilt.
  • Not Synced
    As things tilt forward,
  • Not Synced
    the pentagonal
    undies is going to be
  • Not Synced
    much more squished vertically,
  • Not Synced
    which will result in it
    feeling much more
  • Not Synced
    widened horizontally by comparison.
  • Not Synced
    Pelvic tilt is, therefore, going
    to give the whole pose
  • Not Synced
    a much more feminine feel
  • Not Synced
by making the hips look curvier.
  • Not Synced
The "S" curve on the inner thighs
  • Not Synced
    also gets tucked up
    behind the pelvis,
  • Not Synced
making any gap between the thighs
  • Not Synced
    feel widest at the top
    instead of lower down.
  • Not Synced
    From the back view,
    it's the exact same effect--
  • Not Synced
    everything will look
    wider and curvier,
  • Not Synced
    resulting in an
    exaggerated feminine look.
  • Not Synced
    With this all in mind,
  • Not Synced
    you should feel much more
    capable of exaggerating
  • Not Synced
    the gender expression
    of any character pose.
  • Not Synced
    To move on from this,
  • Not Synced
    we can also explore
    some other types
  • Not Synced
of movements that involve the legs.
  • Not Synced
While legs might might move a lot,
  • Not Synced
    the hip structures won't
    be doing too much.
  • Not Synced
    And that's great
    because it gives us
  • Not Synced
a good structure to work off of.
  • Not Synced
So, even if I lift up a leg,
  • Not Synced
    the tilted pot will
    basically stay the same.
  • Not Synced
And, I can use the front angle of it
  • Not Synced
    to, once again, build a
    sharp "S" curve off of.
  • Not Synced
Same thing for the back side of
the leg connecting to the butt,
  • Not Synced
    but, now, I can have
    the mass of the leg
  • Not Synced
    drag that curve downward
    from the butt with gravity,
  • Not Synced
    giving the whole thigh
    a greater feeling of mass.
  • Not Synced
If we saw this from the other side,
  • Not Synced
    it would be fairly similar,
  • Not Synced
    although, I'm a big fan
    of using a single line
  • Not Synced
    on the inner thigh to
    imply some insertion point
  • Not Synced
    for the adductor muscles.
  • Not Synced
    Speaking of those adductor muscles,
  • Not Synced
    we can get a much
    clearer look at them
  • Not Synced
if we put the legs in
    a much wider stance.
  • Not Synced
    The curves on both
    sides of the thighs
  • Not Synced
are still based on the same
    connections as the side views,
  • Not Synced
    but a quick tapering
    line for the adductors
  • Not Synced
    makes it very readable.
  • Not Synced
Any pose we can think of now
  • Not Synced
    will just be a combination
    of all the information
  • Not Synced
    already given in this video.
  • Not Synced
We can draw from the back
three-fourths with a leg being raised,
  • Not Synced
    and all the connections
    should hold up.
  • Not Synced
    In this case, we also
    need to make sure
  • Not Synced
    to implement what we learned
  • Not Synced
    about showing how
    weight distribution
  • Not Synced
affects the crease under the butt.
  • Not Synced
Even in a more extreme pose
  • Not Synced
    where the leg is
    being lifted behind,
  • Not Synced
    this just requires angling
    our tilted pot so far
  • Not Synced
that it would be spilling its
    contents on the ground,
  • Not Synced
    but all of the other
    connections and concepts
  • Not Synced
    are, once again, the same.
  • Not Synced
    I think we're almost ready;
  • Not Synced
    all information has been
    distilled and delivered.
  • Not Synced
Let's just make sure we avoid some
    of the most common mistakes.
  • Not Synced
    We definitely don't
    want to draw cheeks
  • Not Synced
    that have lines going
    upward on the sides,
  • Not Synced
    as they will appear
    saggy and awkward
  • Not Synced
    with our knowledge of
    how the gluteus maximus
  • Not Synced
    resolves itself toward
the outside side of the leg.
  • Not Synced
We also want to make sure we don't
    forget any important structures,
  • Not Synced
    such as the abdomen
    actually having mass
  • Not Synced
or the hip bones being the highest
    connection point for the legs.
  • Not Synced
    Speaking of highest connections,
  • Not Synced
let's make sure our butts don't slide
  • Not Synced
they way up to our lower back.
  • Not Synced
But, really, a lot of these mistakes
  • Not Synced
    usually just come from having
    some childish iconography
  • Not Synced
    of round butts stored
    in our brains,
  • Not Synced
so try to let 3D form become
    your new iconography.
  • Not Synced
Alright, now you're set and can
have as much fun as you want
  • Not Synced
drawing hips from all sorts of
angles and all sorts of poses.
  • Not Synced
I've already drawn so many hips
    from imagination in this video,
  • Not Synced
but it hasn't become any less fun,
  • Not Synced
so let's do one more page of
    various poses and angles.
  • Not Synced
    This part is more for
    fun than education,
  • Not Synced
so I'm just focused on my
    tempo and line energy.
  • Not Synced
    Some of these are
    definitely exploring
  • Not Synced
the more stylized side of things,
  • Not Synced
    and you probably
    won't see references
  • Not Synced
quite like these in real life,
  • Not Synced
    but, with enough of our
    sprinkles of knowledge,
  • Not Synced
we can have fun with anatomy
  • Not Synced
    that feels somewhat believable,
  • Not Synced
but is pretty wild in the
    actual proportions.
  • Not Synced
i know I tend to stylize
    the legs very widely set,
  • Not Synced
    so these thigh gaps
    are a bit ridiculous,
  • Not Synced
but it does make it more
    fun to balance the poses
  • Not Synced
    and see more crazy
    silhouette shapes.
  • Not Synced
Alright, I did fiddle around with
  • Not Synced
    the actual layout and actual
    positioning of this page,
  • Not Synced
but I think we're ready to paint.
  • Not Synced
    Our normal starting
    point still applies,
  • Not Synced
    so I will be lightening
    the line art
  • Not Synced
    into a more orange-ish tone
    and setting it to multiply.
  • Not Synced
    The background continues to have
    that iconic chalkboard color,
  • Not Synced
which will help us pick more
balanced colors for this skin tones.
  • Not Synced
    Filling in the solid tones
    cleanly on a new layer
  • Not Synced
is a boring step, but saves
tons of time in the long run
  • Not Synced
    by letting you lock transparency
  • Not Synced
    and never have to worry
about edges until the very end.
  • Not Synced
    By far, the biggest
    decision I had to make
  • Not Synced
    was how to handle
    rendering the pelvic area.
  • Not Synced
    Just having skin tones
    alone can make this
  • Not Synced
    feel very lewd very fast.
  • Not Synced
    Just adding black
    modesty underwear
  • Not Synced
    can feel very lewd
    if it's too skimpy.
  • Not Synced
    So, figuring out the right
balance in this was a bit tricky.
  • Not Synced
I think what I got should work, though.
  • Not Synced
    Hopefully, it strikes the
    right educational balance
  • Not Synced
    and keeps the Demon of
    "Itize" from attacking.
  • Not Synced
The next step is a subtle amount
  • Not Synced
    of airbrush gradiation
    on each skin tone,
  • Not Synced
    lightening areas that seldom
    get exposed to the sun
  • Not Synced
    and potentially adding
    more reddish tones
  • Not Synced
    to various other parts.
  • Not Synced
    At this point, things
    will be deviating
  • Not Synced
    from previous paintings a bit.
  • Not Synced
    I decided to go
    with a hyper-smooth
  • Not Synced
    and more cleaner
    rendering style this time.
  • Not Synced
    All of the earliest anatomy
    quick tips were very painterly,
  • Not Synced
    so this offers a bit
    of contrast to that.
  • Not Synced
The easiest way to go about this
  • Not Synced
    is to rely on our
    lock transparency
  • Not Synced
    and establish a simple
    cylindrical shading
  • Not Synced
on both the torso and each leg.
  • Not Synced
    Heavy airbrushing
    around all of the edges
  • Not Synced
    with a slightly deeper and,
    once again, reddish tone
  • Not Synced
    will make the forms feel
    like they're turning away
  • Not Synced
    from the light source.
  • Not Synced
    Next, you can hit the
    tops of these forms
  • Not Synced
    with a bit more highlight.
  • Not Synced
    Usually, I establish this with
just a minimal amount of strokes
  • Not Synced
with a big hard-edged round brush,
  • Not Synced
    and then a bit more
    airbrushing when needed.
  • Not Synced
    Next comes the hard edges,
  • Not Synced
so if they are any cast shadows,
  • Not Synced
you can just add those in,
  • Not Synced
    potentially darkening up
    the edge of the shadow
  • Not Synced
    to imply some bounced light
    hitting inside of the shadow.
  • Not Synced
    All of these additional anatomical
    details and plane changes
  • Not Synced
    can be hinted at by
    using hard edges
  • Not Synced
    where any of those
    planes run into one another,
  • Not Synced
    and then just softly gradiate
    away from that edge.
  • Not Synced
It's always nicer if your light
source leans a little bit more
  • Not Synced
a little bit more toward one side
of the drawing or the other.
  • Not Synced
    Lastly, the underwear does
need a bit of form as well,
  • Not Synced
but we'll imply that it's slightly less
  • Not Synced
    reflected material than skin
  • Not Synced
    and just shrink the
    contrast range of values
  • Not Synced
    down to be more subtle.
  • Not Synced
    This painting technique
    is definitely more suited
  • Not Synced
    toward pinup aesthetics
    and stylized anime,
  • Not Synced
    as it gives everything a
    very silky, smooth appearance.
  • Not Synced
In other styles, I would disregard
    the line art much sooner,
  • Not Synced
    but with this technique,
you can mostly leave it in
  • Not Synced
and still get a presentable look.
  • Not Synced
    One important thing to remember
  • Not Synced
is that you will need to be
    adding the edges and details
  • Not Synced
    into areas of heavy gradiation,
  • Not Synced
    which means that you'll need
    to selectively pick your colors
  • Not Synced
    for anatomical colors based
    on the specific location
  • Not Synced
you're at in the overall gradiation.
  • Not Synced
You don't want to use the
    same color for form light
  • Not Synced
    in a brighter area as
you do in a darker area.
  • Not Synced
    Luckily, the large sweeping
    form gradiations
  • Not Synced
that you do at the start
  • Not Synced
will give you enough of a palette
    to constantly pick from,
  • Not Synced
    so avoid picking
    values that fall outside
  • Not Synced
    of that initially
    established gradiation.
  • Not Synced
    Everything is pretty
    straightforward from here.
  • Not Synced
    Try to notice how often
I seek to do form details
  • Not Synced
and as few strokes as possible.
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes, just a single
    softening stroke of the stylus
  • Not Synced
    is all you need to
    define an entire form.
  • Not Synced
Of course, the darkest skin tone
is probably the most to paint,
  • Not Synced
as you get to bring in
    more focus on the color
  • Not Synced
    of the primary light
    and the bounced light.
  • Not Synced
It's really too bad that most
    of the world's indoor spaces
  • Not Synced
    are dominated by just
    Eurocentric lighting.
  • Not Synced
    I think we would all
    be better painters
  • Not Synced
    if indoor lighting was
    a bit less standardized.
  • Not Synced
    Anyway, as things wind down,
  • Not Synced
I did decide to paint out
    the line work a bit
  • Not Synced
so I can be a bit more
    painterly with the strokes.
  • Not Synced
    I do enjoy playing around
    with that overall ratio
  • Not Synced
    of smooth rendering versus
    painterly rendering.
  • Not Synced
If you can do both comfortably,
  • Not Synced
it opens up a lot of freedom
  • Not Synced
    for deciding the
    mixture you want to use
  • Not Synced
    in any specific painting.
  • Not Synced
It's just going to be a bit of minor
touch ups from here on out,
  • Not Synced
so I'm just going to skip
    ahead to the finished result.
  • Not Synced
    It's pretty good, but I can't resist
  • Not Synced
having just a bit of fun
    with rim lighting as well,
  • Not Synced
    so I'll pop that on,
  • Not Synced
and, voila, I'd say we're done.
  • Not Synced
    Another anatomy quick
    tips in the archives.
  • Not Synced
    Now, you can always
    get more in depth
  • Not Synced
    with your anatomical details,
  • Not Synced
but as far as hips go,
    this should all be enough
  • Not Synced
    to get you into
    the thrust of things.
  • Not Synced
    So, hopefully,
    you enjoyed this video
  • Not Synced
    and learned something fun.
