0:30 - 0:32[So I just pull it?]
-
0:40 - 0:41[A lot?]
-
0:41 - 0:43[Can I pull on it a lot?]
-
0:48 - 0:50Improvisation is crucial.
-
0:51 - 0:56I want the work to be sort of an experience of something live--
-
0:56 - 0:58To have this feeling that it was improvised,
-
0:58 - 1:01That you can see decisions happening on site,
-
1:01 - 1:05The way you see a live sports event,
-
1:05 - 1:08The way you hear jazz.
-
1:35 - 1:38The spontaneous is always where it's the most interesting,
-
1:38 - 1:41for the artist and for the viewer.
-
1:41 - 1:44The "Encyclopedia" piece, when it went to France, for example,
-
1:44 - 1:46We went to local stores,
-
1:46 - 1:48Actually, I didn't even need to go to local stores--
-
1:48 - 1:50It was what we were eating,
-
1:50 - 1:51What was in the hotel,
-
1:51 - 1:53And I added it into the piece.
-
1:58 - 2:02You can spend a lot of time conceptualizing and thinking it over
-
2:02 - 2:05and then it's usually in the actual making and the process
-
2:05 - 2:08where there is something spontaneous that,
-
2:08 - 2:09After all that planning,
-
2:09 - 2:12You had no idea was going to happen,
-
2:12 - 2:15And when that happens is when it's interesting.
-
2:25 - 2:27When you experience the piece,
-
2:27 - 2:29You think about its making,
-
2:29 - 2:31You think about its demise,
-
2:31 - 2:32And you feel like when you come to it
-
2:32 - 2:35It's actually a moment in time.
-
2:43 - 2:45The work looks like a science experiment,
-
2:45 - 2:48It looks like you come into someone's studio,
-
2:48 - 2:49Or someone's lab,
-
2:49 - 2:52And you're seeing the process as it happens,
-
2:52 - 2:55And that the outcome is not clear.
-
2:56 - 2:58So you'll be in a section where you find little things
-
2:58 - 3:00That almost look like jewelry.
-
3:00 - 3:01But then when it starts to look too much like jewelry
-
3:01 - 3:04I'll switch it over to looking like a shoe store.
-
3:04 - 3:05And if it looks too much like a shoe store
-
3:05 - 3:08I'll make it look like a morgue.
-
3:08 - 3:11At the very core of the work, I'm thinking about
-
3:11 - 3:15The edge between life and art,
-
3:15 - 3:17And trying to have the viewer
-
3:17 - 3:19Move in and out of that all the time.
-
3:19 - 3:22So something that's very familiar
-
3:22 - 3:25Juxtaposed with something that's very unfamiliar.
-
3:40 - 3:41When you see it, you know that
-
3:41 - 3:44There was a kind of tinkering that was discovered,
-
3:44 - 3:46That that's something we'd been fooling around with
-
3:46 - 3:49A lot of things to come to that.
-
3:50 - 3:52The viewer actually, I think, experiences
-
3:52 - 3:56That kind of discovery that I actually have.

Episode #162: Filmed in 2010 at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, France, Sarah Sze discusses the importance of improvisation and spontaneity during her installation process. Originally shown at her New York City gallery, Sze altered "The Uncountables (Encyclopedia)" (2010) for its reinstallation in France by incorporating locally found items. Sze's use of improvisation allows for viewers to trace her decision making process as they explore and investigate the artwork.
Sarah Sze builds her installations and intricate sculptures from the minutiae of everyday life, imbuing mundane materials, marks, and processes with surprising significance. Combining domestic detritus and office supplies into fantastical miniatures, she builds her works, fractal-like, on an architectural scale. Whether adapting to a venue or altering the urban fabric, Sze's patchwork compositions mirror the improvisational quality of cities, balancing whimsy with ecological themes of interconnectivity and sustainability.
