Not Synced
If you're looking to do more
to keep your emissions down,
-
Not Synced
you should probably start
with what you pour in your coffee.
-
Not Synced
Yep, I'm talking about milk.
-
Not Synced
One researcher found that milk,
cheese, and ice cream from cows
-
Not Synced
is responsible for about 3.6%
of global emissions.
-
Not Synced
The almonds in your almond milk,
-
Not Synced
take about six times more water to grow
than the same amount of oats.
-
Not Synced
Which is one reason why oat milk
is now everywhere.
-
Not Synced
Well, those aren't
the only milk alternatives.
-
Not Synced
There's also one
that has an added benefit,
-
Not Synced
plus, it has humps.
-
Not Synced
ALT MILK
-
Not Synced
So now what we're going to do
-
Not Synced
is take a little bit of
milk out of each tit,
-
Not Synced
and we're going to have a look at that
milk.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) Okay,
I'm going to give this a try.
-
Not Synced
I am getting quite--
Oh, there we go.
-
Not Synced
All right, I'm milking camel.
-
Not Synced
(Lauren) The next two, the next two
we got to milk, yeah.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) This is a camel dairy farm
-
Not Synced
and it's in Australia.
-
Not Synced
When Lauren Brisbane started it
six years ago,
-
Not Synced
it was the only one in the country.
-
Not Synced
It's been difficult
-
Not Synced
because Australians
aren't naturally adventurous
-
Not Synced
particularly in new food types.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) In the 1860s,
-
Not Synced
Afghan camel herders
were hired to help explore
-
Not Synced
the country's desert landscapes
bringing thousands of camels with them.
-
Not Synced
But with the advent of trains and cars,
-
Not Synced
camels soon became obsolete.
-
Not Synced
So they were released into the wild.
-
Not Synced
Fast forward to the early 2000s,
-
Not Synced
And Australia was home
to more than a million camels,
-
Not Synced
which was a problem
because those camels
-
Not Synced
cause 10 million dollars
in environmental damage each year,
-
Not Synced
according to the government.
-
Not Synced
So officials tried to stop them
by killing thousands of camels in 2010.
-
Not Synced
Lauren saw this as an opportunity
to turn camels into a cash cow.
-
Not Synced
There's worldwide need for camel milk.
-
Not Synced
It doesn't cause a lot of the dysfunction
or the allergy reaction
-
Not Synced
that you get from, you know, dairy,
cow dairy milk.
-
Not Synced
So it's easier to digest.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) Research on camel milk
is still very scarce.
-
Not Synced
There's only limited evidence
to suggest that camel milk might have
-
Not Synced
unique nutritional properties
-
Not Synced
and overall, the jury still out.
-
Not Synced
At $25 a liter, it's also not cheap.
-
Not Synced
Ah, look, I think it's expensive because
camels don't produce a lot of milk,
-
Not Synced
and the way you operate
the dairy is completely different.
-
Not Synced
But it's a very high-end healthy product,
-
Not Synced
and to produce that properly is expensive.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) Camel milk has been popular
in the Middle East and Africa
-
Not Synced
for thousands of years.
-
Not Synced
And Australia is nowhere close
to cracking the list of top producers.
-
Not Synced
Laura thinks she can help
expand the product's reach
-
Not Synced
beyond just being a fad, though.
-
Not Synced
So, we had a chat
with her target audience.
-
Not Synced
Would you be willing to try
the camel milk today?
-
Not Synced
Yeah, all right. Sure.
-
Not Synced
What do you think?
-
Not Synced
It actually tastes a lot like
goat's milk without the pungent taste.
-
Not Synced
- You have a little bit of milk here--
- A camel milk mustache.
-
Not Synced
Would you pay $25
for a liter of camel milk?
-
Not Synced
Maybe once and then see how I go.
(laughter)
-
Not Synced
Maybe, okay.
-
Not Synced
It's like four times
the amount of the regular milk
-
Not Synced
and I guess, as a novelty, it's all right,
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) Lauren's farm isn't the
only one of its kind.
-
Not Synced
Around a dozen other camel dairies
have popped up in Australia since 2014.
-
Not Synced
And the industry is growing.
-
Not Synced
According to one report,
-
Not Synced
it's projected to grow
by 8% globally each year,
-
Not Synced
for the next seven years.
-
Not Synced
It's a projection
that someone like Jeff Flood,
-
Not Synced
co-owner of Summer Land Camel Farm,
-
Not Synced
is really banking on.
-
Not Synced
We're nearly 800 camels now.
-
Not Synced
Besides, our operation here
-
Not Synced
represents pretty much 60% of
the industry in total in volume.
-
Not Synced
So it's a huge R&D project here--
Well, how do we build the herd?
-
Not Synced
We've got to take a feral animal
and convince it that it's safe to be here.
-
Not Synced
It's okay to give up milk.
-
Not Synced
There's a whole training and
domestication process in the front.
-
Not Synced
- (Jeff) Enjoy.
- (Arielle) Okay. Thank you.
-
Not Synced
(Jeff) So this room is a super clean room.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) Okay, I notice some stuff in jars
and some--
-
Not Synced
(Jeff) Yeah...
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) Some Tupperware,
what's going on here?
-
Not Synced
(Jeff) This is all
that cheese prototyping--
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) So... was this top secret?
-
Not Synced
- (Jeff) Yes. A lot of that is actually--
- (Arielle) Really?
-
Not Synced
(Jeff) Nobody's done stuff
with camel milk work like we have so,
-
Not Synced
for example, has anyone made
a parmesan cheese out of camel's milk?.
-
Not Synced
Well, we have.
-
Not Synced
(Jeff) So this is, this morning's milk.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) That is so white.
-
Not Synced
(Jeff) It is so white.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) The color is very--
-
Not Synced
It looks completely different.
-
Not Synced
(Jeff) Well, here's to our health again.
-
Not Synced
(Arielle) Thank you so much.
-
Not Synced
And I was really interesting.
-
Not Synced
It definitely tastes like milk. It
doesn't taste strong like goats milk
-
Not Synced
little bit on the salty side.
-
Not Synced
It's really clean.
-
Not Synced
What excited really clean mouth feel
so it spreads evenly across the mouth.
-
Not Synced
The fat molecules.
-
Not Synced
Like I said, but really small
-
Not Synced
and you get the full flavor of
the milk all the way through.
-
Not Synced
What is the future of this industry?
Look like I would hope that in about
-
Not Synced
Years time everybody. In
Australia, has tasted camel milk,
-
Not Synced
whether it's a gelato or cheese or
milk, or they've used the product.
-
Not Synced
That's got camel milk in there.
-
Not Synced
Maybe the skincare range is or something
nutraceutical product that uses power
-
Not Synced
scaling camel milk production isn't easy
-
Not Synced
because of their low and sometimes
unpredictable daily yield
-
Not Synced
but Jeff's Farm is trying to do just that.
-
Not Synced
Laurens approach to camel, milk
production as a bit different though.
-
Not Synced
She puts a lot of emphasis on cuddle time,
-
Not Synced
which she says helps the
camels feel more comfortable,
-
Not Synced
and more willing to give up their milk.
-
Not Synced
Every afternoon camel cuddling
is part of the job really?
-
Not Synced
Well, that is quite a burden.
It is, it's terrible. Horrible.
-
Not Synced
Be very hard for you. Yeah, very was
really great coming from a perspective that
-
Not Synced
we weren't Dairy people, because
we looked at camels as camels.
-
Not Synced
And we looked at their needs and
-
Not Synced
he loves to cuddle. Hello.
-
Not Synced
Okay, this is Rosie.
-
Not Synced
And from your perspective, is this doing
well, weiwei breaking, even at the moment,
-
Not Synced
and when we just popping
over into the profit sector,
-
Not Synced
so when you start anything,
it's always difficult,
-
Not Synced
but it certainly moving along in a
nice Direction. Let's put it that way.
-
Not Synced
Today is all about versatility. We're
going to talk milk Alternatives.
-
Not Synced
That's right. It's not
just about Pals ball, baby.
