1913 | "Dynamism of a Soccer Player" by Umberto Boccioni

  • 0:04 - 0:07
The Italian Futurists were one group of artists
  • 0:07 - 0:10
who were doing incredible things in 1913,
  • 0:10 - 0:11
thinking about art as something that
  • 0:11 - 0:13
had to be for the new century.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
Speed, noise, machinery, and the city
  • 0:17 - 0:20
became a key part of all of their paintings.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    “Dynamism of a Soccer Player”
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    challenges any viewer to
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    actually find a soccer player
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    – two arms, two legs, a face.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    No way!
  • 0:30 - 0:33
Colors and shapes moving, running, kicking.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
Your eye is brought to the next place
  • 0:36 - 0:37
or to a place further down.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
And there is only one way when you look at a yellow form
  • 0:40 - 0:42
or a red form, that you can see that form
  • 0:42 - 0:46
which is in relation to the colors circulating around it.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    The brushstrokes are extremely visible.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    They’re tangible.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    It’s material.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    Photography, which was little more
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    than half a century old,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    had an enormous impact.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
Eadweard Muybridge did photography in sequence
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    bop bop bop bop bop.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
They wanted to do that in painting too.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
The Futurists believed that part of being modern
  • 1:08 - 1:10
was not only painting modern things,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    but creating a ruckus.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
When their pictures appeared at exhibitions,
  • 1:15 - 1:17
they issued manifestos, they had lectures,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
they had performances that absolutely provoked
  • 1:20 - 1:22
the people in attendance to realizing,
  • 1:22 - 1:26
"Wow! Even if we didn't understand the picture,
  • 1:26 - 1:30
what we're doing is being a witness to something
  • 1:30 - 1:32
that is upsetting centuries of tradition.”
  • 1:32 - 1:37
