-
0:57 - 1:04Today, it is an honour for me to be speaking again after a long time.
-
1:06 - 1:12Being here with such honourable people is a great moment in my life.
-
1:12 - 1:20And it is honor for me that today I'm wearing a shawl of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed.
-
1:23 - 1:26I don't know where to begin my speech.
-
1:28 - 1:31I don't know what people would be expecting me to say.
-
1:33 - 1:34But first of all,
-
1:35 - 1:40thank you to God for whom we all are equal
-
1:42 - 1:49and thank you to every person who has prayed for my fast recovery and a new life.
-
1:52 - 1:56I cannot believe how much love people have shown me.
-
1:59 - 2:04I have received thousands of good wish cards and gifts from all over the world.
-
2:05 - 2:07Thank you to all of them.
-
2:08 - 2:14Thank you to the children whose innocent words encouraged me.
-
2:15 - 2:20Thank you to my elders whose prayers strengthened me.
-
2:22 - 2:26I would like to thank my nurses, doctors

2:34 - 2:38who have helped me to get better and recover my strength.
-
2:39 - 2:47I fully support Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General, in his Global Education First Initiative

-
2:53 - 2:56and the respected President General Assembly Vuk Jeremic.
-
2:58 - 3:02I thank all of them for the leadership that they continue to give.
-
3:03 - 3:07They continue to inspire all of us to action.
-
3:10 - 3:12Dear brothers and sisters,
-
3:13 - 3:16Do remember one thing:
-
3:18 - 3:21Malala Day is not my day.
-
3:23 - 3:27Today is the day of every woman,
-
3:28 - 3:36every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights.
-
3:39 - 3:42There are hundreds of human rights activists
-
3:43 - 3:47and social workers who are not only speaking for their rights,
-
3:49 - 3:56but who are struggling to achieve their goal of peace, education, and equality.
-
3:58 - 4:04Thousands of people have been killed by the terrorists and millions have been injured.
-
4:04 - 4:06I'm just one of them.
-
4:09 - 4:11So here I stand
-
4:12 - 4:16So here I stand one girl among many.
-
4:17 - 4:25I speak, not for myself, but for those without voice can be heard.
-
4:27 - 4:30Those who have fought for their rights.
-
4:33 - 4:35Their right to live in peace.
-
4:37 - 4:41Their right to be treated with dignity.
-
4:42 - 4:46Their right to equality of opportunity.
-
4:46 - 4:49Their right to be educated.
-
4:51 - 4:56Dear Friends, on the 9th of October 2012,
-
4:57 - 5:02the Taliban shot me on the left side of my forehead.
-
5:03 - 5:05They shot my friends, too.
-
5:06 - 5:11They thought that the bullets would silence us.
-
5:13 - 5:14But they failed.
-
5:17 - 5:20And out of that silence came thousands of voices.
-
5:22 - 5:27The terrorists thought that they would change my aims and stop my ambitions.
-
5:28 - 5:31But nothing changed in my life except this:
-
5:32 - 5:36weakness, fear, and hopelessness died;
-
5:37 - 5:58strength, power and courage was born.
[Applause] -
5:58 - 5:59I am the same Malala.
-
6:01 - 6:05My ambitions are the same, my hopes are the same
-
6:06 - 6:08and my dreams are the same.
-
6:09 - 6:11Dear sisters and brothers,
-
6:14 - 6:15I'm not against anyone.
-
6:17 - 6:23Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban, or any other terrorists group.
-
6:25 - 6:41I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child.
[Applause] -
6:41 - 6:47I want education for the sons and the daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists.
-
6:48 - 6:51I do not even hate the Talib who shot me.
-
6:51 - 6:56Even if there is a gun in my hand and he stands in front of me.
-
6:57 - 6:59I would not shoot him.
-
7:00 - 7:05This is the compassion that I have learnt from Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy,
-
7:05 - 7:08and Jesus christ, and Lord Buddha.
-
7:09 - 7:14This is the legacy of change that I have inherited from Martin Luther King,
-
7:14 - 7:27Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. This is --
[Applause] -
7:27 - 7:35This is the philosophy of non-violence that I have learnt from Gandhi, Bacha Khan, and Mother Teresa.
-
7:36 - 7:52And this is the forgiveness that I have learnt from my father and from my mother. And --
[Applause] -
7:52 - 7:59This is what my soul is telling me, be peaceful and love everyone.
-
8:01 - 8:03Dear sisters and brothers,
-
8:05 - 8:11We realize the importance of light when we see darkness.
-
8:13 - 8:18We realize the importance of our voice when we are silenced.
-
8:19 - 8:24In the same way, when we were in Swat, the north of Pakistan,
-
8:25 - 8:30we realized the importance of pens and books when we saw the guns.
-
8:31 - 8:37The wise saying, “The pen is mightier than sword" was true.
-
8:38 - 8:45The extremists were and they are afraid of books and pens.
-
8:45 - 8:51The power of education, the power of education frightens them.
-
8:52 - 8:54They are afraid of women.
-
8:55 - 8:58The power of the voice of women frightens them.
-
8:58 - 9:06And that is why they killed 14 innocent students in the recent attack in Quetta.
-
9:07 - 9:13And that is why they killed female teachers and polio workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
-
9:14 - 9:17That is why they are blasting schools every day.
-
9:17 - 9:26Because they were and they are afraid of change, afraid of equality that we will bring into our society.
-
9:28 - 9:35And I remember that there was a boy in our school who was asked by a journalist:
-
9:36 - 9:39“Why are the Taliban against education?"
-
9:40 - 9:42He answered very simply,
-
9:43 - 9:46by pointing to his book, he said:
-
9:47 - 9:51“A Talib doesn't know what is written inside this book."
-
9:52 - 9:58They think that God is a tiny, little conservative being
-
9:58 - 10:01who'd send girls to the hell just because of going to school.
-
10:02 - 10:22The terrorists are misusing the name of Islam and Pashtun society for their own personal benefits.
[Applause] -
10:22 - 10:25Pakistan is a peace-loving democratic country.
-
10:26 - 10:30Pashtuns want education for their daughters and sons.
-
10:30 - 10:35And Islam is a religion of peace, humanity and brotherhood.
-
10:35 - 10:42Islam says it's not only each child's right to get education, rather it is their duty and responsibility.
-
10:43 - 10:45Honourable Secretary General,
-
10:46 - 10:49Peace is necessary for education.
-
10:50 - 10:54In many parts of the world especially Pakistan and Afghanistan,
-
10:55 - 11:00terrorism, wars, and conflicts stop children to go to their schools.
-
11:01 - 11:04We are really tired of these wars.
-
11:05 - 11:10Women and children are suffering in many ways,
-
11:10 - 11:13in many parts of the world.
-
11:14 - 11:21In India, innocent and poor children are victims of child labour.
-
11:23 - 11:26Many schools have been destroyed in Nigeria.
-
11:27 - 11:33People in Afghanistan have been affected by the hurdles of extremism for decades.
-
11:35 - 11:42Young girls have to do domestic child labour and are forced to get married at early age.
-
11:44 - 11:53Poverty, ignorance, injustice, racism and the deprivation of basic rights
-
11:53 - 11:56are the main problems faced by both men and women.
-
11:57 - 12:04Dear fellows, today I am focusing on women's rights and girls' education
-
12:05 - 12:08because they are suffering the most.
-
12:08 - 12:15There was a time when women social activists asked men to stand up for their rights.
-
12:15 - 12:32But this time, we will do it by ourselves.
[Applause] -
12:33 - 12:37I am not telling men to step away from speaking for women's rights.
-
12:37 - 12:44Rather, I am focusing on women to be independent to fight for themselves.
-
12:45 - 12:50So dear sisters and brothers, now it's time to speak up.
-
12:51 - 13:02So today, we call upon the world leaders to change their strategic policies in favour of peace and prosperity.
-
13:03 - 13:11We call upon the world leaders that all the peace deals must protect women's and children's rights.
-
13:12 - 13:28A deal that goes against the rights of women is unacceptable.
[Applause] -
13:28 - 13:35We call upon all governments to ensure free compulsory education
-
13:35 - 13:44all over the world for every child.
[Applause] -
13:45 - 13:51We call upon all governments to fight against terrorism and violence,
-
13:51 - 13:55to protect children from brutality and harm.
-
13:56 - 14:02We call upon the developed nations to support the expansion of educational opportunities
-
14:02 - 14:05for girls in the developing world.
-
14:06 - 14:10We call upon all the communities to be tolerant,
-
14:12 - 14:20to reject prejudice based on caste, creed, sect, color, religion, or gender.
-
14:21 - 14:27To ensure freedom and equality for women so that they can flourish.
-
14:28 - 14:33We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.
-
14:36 - 14:41We call upon our sisters around the world to be brave,
-
14:41 - 14:48to embrace the strength within themselves and realize their full potential.
-
14:49 - 15:00Dear brothers and sisters, we want schools and education for every child's bright future.
-
15:02 - 15:09We will continue our journey to our destination of peace and education.
-
15:10 - 15:12No one can stop us.
-
15:13 - 15:20We will speak up for our rights and we will bring change through our voice.
-
15:22 - 15:28We believe in the power and the strength of our words.
-
15:29 - 15:32Our words can change the whole world,
-
15:33 - 15:41because we are all together, united for the cause of education.
-
15:42 - 15:51And if we want to achieve our goal, then let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge
-
15:52 - 15:58and let us shield ourselves with unity and togetherness.
-
16:00 - 16:02Dear brothers and sisters,
-
16:03 - 16:09We must not forget that millions of people are suffering from poverty,
-
16:09 - 16:12injustice, and ignorance.
-
16:14 - 16:19We must not forget that millions of children are out of their schools.
-
16:21 - 16:29We must not forget that our sisters and brothers are waiting for a bright peaceful future.
-
16:30 - 16:32So let us wage,
-
16:32 - 16:39so let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty, and terrorism.
-
16:40 - 16:45Let us pick up, let us pick up our books and our pens.
-
16:46 - 16:49They are our most powerful weapons.
-
16:50 - 17:00One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world.
-
17:01 - 17:05Education is the only solution.
-
17:05 - 17:07Education First.
-
17:07 - 17:14Thank you.
[Applause...]
