The prison of your mind | Sean Stephenson | TEDxIronwoodStatePrison
-
0:01 - 0:04I'm trying to compose
my blog post for tonight, -
0:04 - 0:07and I'm thinking
it sounds really believable -
0:07 - 0:13that I went to prison and hugged
a bunch of really nice prisoners, -
0:13 - 0:18while a DJ busy, threw on some records,
-
0:18 - 0:22and Richard Branson told me
where I can score some free heroin. -
0:22 - 0:23(Laughter)
-
0:24 - 0:25(Applause)
-
0:34 - 0:36True story!
-
0:36 - 0:37(Laughter)
-
0:43 - 0:45Lesson number one:
-
0:47 - 0:53never believe a prediction
that doesn't empower you. -
0:54 - 0:57When I was born,
the doctors told my parents -
0:57 - 1:02that I would be dead
within the first 24 hours of my life. -
1:04 - 1:1035 years later, all those doctors are dead
-
1:10 - 1:11(Laughter)
-
1:18 - 1:22and I am the only doctor that remains.
-
1:22 - 1:23(Laughter)
-
1:23 - 1:25(Applause)
-
1:29 - 1:32Never believe a prediction
that doesn't empower you. -
1:32 - 1:38How many predictions have been
thrown at you your whole life? -
1:38 - 1:42If you believe predictions
that do not empower you, -
1:42 - 1:46you will wither away and die,
-
1:46 - 1:49either physically die
or your spirit will die -
1:49 - 1:54as you just walk around
the world like a carcass -
1:54 - 1:57that is just following the masses.
-
2:00 - 2:04You'll be given
a lot of titles in your life, -
2:04 - 2:07you'll be told so many different things.
-
2:07 - 2:11You must only listen
to that which empowers you. -
2:12 - 2:15I have a belief
that has served me in my life, -
2:15 - 2:20and that is that everyone
is rooting from me to win, -
2:20 - 2:22even those that do not know it.
-
2:24 - 2:28And I'm not here today to tell you
that I've had adversity in my life -
2:28 - 2:31and therefore, I know
what you are going through. -
2:31 - 2:37I don't have a clue what any of you
are going through in your lives. -
2:37 - 2:40I did not grow up in your neighborhoods
more than likely. -
2:40 - 2:44I did not have your set of parents,
nor do I live in your body. -
2:44 - 2:49I've not had the events
that you've had happened to you. -
2:49 - 2:53I can tell you I am only
an expert on one thing, -
2:53 - 2:57and that's how to be me, and I do it well.
-
2:57 - 2:59(Applause)
-
3:04 - 3:08But it's not come easily,
-
3:09 - 3:14I've gone through things that I don't wish
upon anyone in this room. -
3:14 - 3:19I've had metal rods pulled out
of bone marrow while I was awake, -
3:19 - 3:22I've had jaw infections
where teeth had to be extracted -
3:22 - 3:25and I can no longer chew my own food.
-
3:25 - 3:28I have to get up everyday,
-
3:28 - 3:32and be showered and cared for
physically by another human being; -
3:32 - 3:35fortunately, she's a gorgeous
woman that I married. -
3:35 - 3:37(Applause)
-
3:41 - 3:44I get stared at everywhere I go,
-
3:44 - 3:46and the moment people meet me,
-
3:46 - 3:48if they don't know a thing
about my résumé, -
3:48 - 3:53they automatically, just by
the human nature, think to themselves: -
3:53 - 3:58"Oh, it must be so difficult
to be that man!" -
4:00 - 4:04If somebody pities me,
they're wasting their time, -
4:04 - 4:07because I have chosen a life of strength,
-
4:07 - 4:11I am here to help you
choose a life of strength, -
4:11 - 4:14but I'm going to tell you,
we've talked about drugs here. -
4:14 - 4:20You know what the worst drug
that ever hit the human race is? -
4:20 - 4:21Pity.
-
4:21 - 4:24The moment you feel sorry
for another person -
4:24 - 4:28or the moment you feel sorry
for yourself, you're hosed. -
4:28 - 4:32You're totally, completely
frozen in potential. -
4:33 - 4:38We can not pity ourselves,
we can not pity you. -
4:38 - 4:45Yes, I get to go home today, yes, I get
to have what many would call freedom, -
4:45 - 4:48but I'm going to talk to you about freedom
-
4:48 - 4:52about what I really choose
to see freedom as, -
4:52 - 4:53because like I said,
-
4:53 - 4:57you can not believe predictions
that do not empower you!. -
4:57 - 5:01The second lesson today is
you are not your condition. -
5:01 - 5:02You're not.
-
5:02 - 5:05I'm not disabled!
-
5:05 - 5:09Sure, I'll take the handicapped
parking privileges -
5:09 - 5:10(Laughter)
-
5:12 - 5:15but that does not define me as a man.
-
5:15 - 5:17Not able?
-
5:17 - 5:21I've been looked at and treated
my whole life as if I am not able. -
5:21 - 5:24I have had to rise above and show people
-
5:24 - 5:29that the only disability
is one's refusal to adapt. -
5:29 - 5:32You have to adapt to whatever
environment you're in, -
5:32 - 5:34even if it's prison.
-
5:34 - 5:38And what does adaption look like?
I think it looks like celebration. -
5:38 - 5:41Because when you meet people
that are celebrating their life, -
5:41 - 5:44you want to be around them,
you want to learn from them, -
5:44 - 5:47you want to do business with them,
you want to hire them. -
5:47 - 5:50Look! If you do not want to be seen
as a prisoner or a convict -
5:50 - 5:54when you get out of this,
or even while you're in this, -
5:54 - 5:56there is an attitude,
-
5:56 - 5:59it is a belief in yourself that you bring
value to the human race, -
5:59 - 6:04no matter what your current condition,
title, or stature is. -
6:06 - 6:11Because if I believe that I am disabled,
I would wither up, I would be shy, -
6:11 - 6:16I would be insecure, I would be afraid,
I would act like I need your help. -
6:16 - 6:20And the rest of humanity
would be OK with that, -
6:20 - 6:23but I choose something else,
-
6:23 - 6:25I choose to be strong,
I choose to be a leader, -
6:25 - 6:29I choose to have words
to move this planet, -
6:29 - 6:32I'll tell you why I was born.
-
6:32 - 6:35And I hope it inspires you to
find out why you were born. -
6:35 - 6:39I was born to rid
this world of insecurity. -
6:39 - 6:44Because when a human being
is insecure, they do stupid stuff. -
6:44 - 6:46When we feel like we're not enough,
-
6:46 - 6:51we chase external validation,
and external objects -
6:51 - 6:53to try to tell us we're enough.
-
6:53 - 6:55(Applause)
-
6:55 - 6:56Thank you.
-
7:02 - 7:03You are enough.
-
7:03 - 7:06I'll tell you I've made
a pledge of the therapist -
7:06 - 7:10to love all human beings,
no matter what they've done. -
7:10 - 7:12Because deep down inside,
-
7:12 - 7:16I found that every human being
just wants to be loved, -
7:16 - 7:19even if they're tough,
even if they're scary, -
7:19 - 7:20even if they're vicious.
-
7:20 - 7:23You get them in the right position,
at the right time, -
7:23 - 7:25they'll tell you the truth.
-
7:25 - 7:26They just want to be loved.
-
7:26 - 7:29Do you know whom they want
the love from the most? -
7:29 - 7:31Not their moms, not their dads,
not their wardens. -
7:31 - 7:33None of these people.
-
7:33 - 7:36They want to be able to look in
the mirror and love themselves. -
7:36 - 7:39And if you can figure that out,
then you're going somewhere. -
7:39 - 7:41(Applause)
-
7:46 - 7:49But you can not feel sorry for yourself.
-
7:49 - 7:53When you feel sorry
for yourself, you will wither. -
7:53 - 7:58But there's a contradiction
to feeling sorry for yourself, -
7:58 - 8:03it's the opposite extreme,
it's what I call 'bullying yourself, ' -
8:03 - 8:08beating yourself up, being
your own enemy and telling yourself -
8:08 - 8:11that all those predictions,
those negative opinions -
8:11 - 8:14that they're true, they're right,
you're washed up, failure. -
8:14 - 8:16You're not going to amount to anything.
-
8:16 - 8:20Bullying yourself is the most
dangerous thing that you could do. -
8:20 - 8:25You can not afford to pity yourself,
you can not afford to bully yourself, -
8:25 - 8:27you have to love yourself,
-
8:27 - 8:30because the last lesson that I'm going
to share with you today -
8:33 - 8:36that is I'm going to teach you
what the real prison is, -
8:37 - 8:42it's not surrounded by bar,
wire, or electrical fences, -
8:42 - 8:45the real prisons do not have guards,
-
8:46 - 8:49the real prison's up here.
-
8:50 - 8:52And we all got it,
-
8:53 - 9:00we all have a mind that chatters,
so often won't stop chattering. -
9:01 - 9:07Do you know where your salvation is?
It's not outside these walls. -
9:09 - 9:15I've met so many people that are
so extremely successful and famous, -
9:15 - 9:17that are in prison,
-
9:17 - 9:21because they're stuck in their minds,
-
9:21 - 9:25bullying themselves, pitying themselves.
-
9:27 - 9:30True freedom is dropping down
out of that mind. -
9:30 - 9:36And what my wife has taught me
is to drop into your hearts. -
9:37 - 9:39in the mastering this beating thing
-
9:39 - 9:43that is more than just sending
blood to the extremities. -
9:43 - 9:44What is it doing?
-
9:44 - 9:49It's sending emotional possibilities,
infinite possibilities of choice -
9:49 - 9:53in our behavior, in our life,
in our attitude. -
9:55 - 9:57When you love yourself,
-
9:57 - 10:03whether you're sleeping
on a prison cot, or in a mansion, -
10:03 - 10:04whether you have food in your belly,
-
10:04 - 10:07or you don't know
when your next meal is coming, -
10:07 - 10:09when you love yourself,
-
10:09 - 10:12when you learn to master your emotions,
-
10:12 - 10:15then and only then are you free.
-
10:15 - 10:20I love you, each and everyone of you,
and I wish you freedom within these walls. -
10:20 - 10:21God bless.
-
10:21 - 10:23(Applause)
