  • 12:55 - 12:57
when He was physically on Earth.
  • 12:57 - 13:00
    (Derek) That's right; He wasn't
    one of the twelve, right?
  • 13:00 - 13:03
So he has seen something in his ministry.
  • 13:03 - 13:05
Didn't Jesus say, "By their fruit..."
  • 13:05 - 13:07
    (Derek, Team) "...you'll know them."
  • 13:07 - 13:10
(Derek) So he had seen something
from the fruit of his ministry
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    that said, "He's an apostle."
  • 13:12 - 13:14
What does apostle mean, by the way?
    Do you know?
  • 13:14 - 13:16
    One who's sent out, right?
  • 13:16 - 13:18
"He's an apostle of Jesus Christ," okay?
  • 13:18 - 13:20
What else, even in the wording
    of the passage,
  • 13:20 - 13:22
    did you see something?
  • 13:22 - 13:24
    Christine, and then Marcus.
  • 13:24 - 13:26
(Christine) It says here in verse 15
  • 13:26 - 13:30
that God gave Paul the wisdom
    and the knowledge...
  • 13:30 - 13:32
(Derek) Aha, wisdom, I think the way
    Jonathan read it,
  • 13:32 - 13:34
wisdom that comes from God, all right?
  • 13:34 - 13:37
Anywhere else, a little clue? Jason?
  • 13:37 - 13:39
(Jason) In verse 16, he talks about those
  • 13:39 - 13:41
who twist and distort the meaning,
  • 13:41 - 13:43
and he's saying they do it
  • 13:43 - 13:44
    to their own destruction.
  • 13:44 - 13:46
And so, you can deduce from that,
  • 13:46 - 13:48
    if you understand it correctly,
  • 13:48 - 13:49
    that's the way to salvation.
  • 13:49 - 13:51
He's preaching the message of God.
  • 13:51 - 13:53
    (Derek) That's an interesting thought,
  • 13:53 - 13:57
    and actually there's another phrase
attached to there which is important, too.
  • 13:57 - 13:58
    Did you notice it, Peter?
  • 13:58 - 14:00
(Peter) It says, "as the rest
    of the Scripture."
  • 14:00 - 14:05
    (Derek) Okay, so he's including
    Paul's testimonies,
  • 14:05 - 14:08
not only as a wisdom from God,
    like Christine said,
  • 14:08 - 14:12
but as part of Scripture, God-breathed.
  • 14:12 - 14:14
It's Peter who says all Scripture
  • 14:14 - 14:15
    is God-breathed, right?
  • 14:15 - 14:17
    No private interpretation,
  • 14:17 - 14:20
as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
  • 14:20 - 14:21
    All right, but that's interesting.
  • 14:21 - 14:24
    Also, implicitly he's saying,
  • 14:24 - 14:27
"If you listen, it's for your salvation,"
  • 14:27 - 14:29
    that gives it authority.
  • 14:29 - 14:30
    "If you twist it,
  • 14:30 - 14:31
    it's for your destruction."
  • 14:31 - 14:33
All right, so Paul is recognized
  • 14:33 - 14:36
by at least Peter, but I think
  • 14:36 - 14:39
we could say by the Christian community.
  • 14:39 - 14:40
    God's at work in him,
  • 14:40 - 14:42
and God is speaking through him.
  • 14:42 - 14:45
We're going to look at one
of his letters in this series,
  • 14:45 - 14:46
    the Gospel to the Galatians.
  • 14:46 - 14:50
The standard format of a letter...
  • 14:50 - 14:52
did you find this from your study?
  • 14:52 - 14:54
What's the standard format of a letter
  • 14:54 - 14:56
back in those times, Tricia Lee?
  • 14:56 - 14:59
(Tricia Lee) I don't know about back then,
but I do know, like, when you're
  • 14:59 - 15:03
in grammar school, you're taught that you
start with a greeting or some type
  • 15:03 - 15:07
of salutation, then you have who it's to
and the subject of the message,
  • 15:07 - 15:11
and you kind of end off with some type of,
    you know...
  • 15:11 - 15:13
(Derek) Farewell or closing remark or?
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    Is that pretty much, Jason,
  • 15:15 - 15:17
the way it looked in these letters
  • 15:17 - 15:20
    during the New Testament era?
  • 15:20 - 15:23
(Jason) Largely yes, and you generally
    start with the positive, too.
  • 15:23 - 15:26
So you'll say, "Oh, you guys, this is
    a nice thing about you,"
  • 15:26 - 15:29
whether you're writing a letter now
    or these letters of Paul.
  • 15:29 - 15:30
    They're always saying,
  • 15:30 - 15:32
"This is a good thing that you have."
  • 15:32 - 15:34
"This is what I like about you."
  • 15:34 - 15:36
    (Derek) That would probably
    still work today, right?
  • 15:36 - 15:40
If you've got a problem with someone,
you can say, "Here are some things
  • 15:40 - 15:43
I really appreciate about you, but,"
    and talk about a problem.
  • 15:43 - 15:46
And that's pretty much standard format,
  • 15:46 - 15:50
    greeting, some word of thanksgiving,
  • 15:50 - 15:51
    body of the letter,
  • 15:51 - 15:54
    and then some closing remark,
  • 15:54 - 15:55
    and typically with Paul
  • 15:55 - 15:57
it would include, "the grace of the Lord
  • 15:57 - 16:00
be with you," right, something like that.
  • 16:00 - 16:03
    Let's see how he begins
  • 16:03 - 16:05
    the letter to the Galatians.
  • 16:05 - 16:09
    Galatians, chapter 1, verses 1 and 2,
  • 16:09 - 16:12
and, Alyssa, if you'd read that for us,
  • 16:12 - 16:13
    and then we'll compare that.
  • 16:13 - 16:16
    If someone could find
    Ephesians 1, verse 1,
  • 16:16 - 16:18
    and Colossians 1, verse 1,
  • 16:18 - 16:21
    let's see if they're similar
  • 16:21 - 16:22
or if there are some differences.
  • 16:22 - 16:24
By the way, all of those letters
  • 16:24 - 16:26
were written by the Apostle Paul.
  • 16:26 - 16:29
(Alyssa) In the New International Version
    it says:
  • 16:43 - 16:45
(Derek) Okay, that's his greeting there.
  • 16:45 - 16:46
    Keep that in mind.
  • 16:46 - 16:48
    Does someone have Ephesians?
  • 16:48 - 16:51
Joshua, chapter 1 and verse 1.
  • 16:51 - 16:54
(Joshua) I'll be reading from the New
    King James Version.
  • 16:54 - 16:55
    The Bible says:
  • 17:03 - 17:05
(Derek) All right, so that's to the church
    in Ephesus,
  • 17:05 - 17:08
then he writes to the church in Colossae,
  • 17:08 - 17:12
we call that Colossians, Marcus, verse 1.
  • 17:12 - 17:15
(Marcus) I'll be reading from the King
    James Version:
  • 17:23 - 17:25
(Derek) So what did they have in common,
  • 17:25 - 17:29
    those three opening salutations?
  • 17:29 - 17:30
What did they have in common?
  • 17:30 - 17:31
    (Harold) He's an apostle.
  • 17:31 - 17:34
(Derek) Okay so, Paul, an apostle -
    gives his name,
  • 17:34 - 17:36
like we do even today, right?
  • 17:36 - 17:38
    Gives a name and says
  • 17:38 - 17:40
    he's an apostle of Jesus.
  • 17:40 - 17:42
    What was different, Mario?
  • 17:42 - 17:43
    What did you see different
  • 17:43 - 17:45
    in the Galatian intro?
  • 17:45 - 17:48
    (Mario) He expounds on that.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
He says not by the will of man
  • 17:50 - 17:52
    but of God, you know.
  • 17:52 - 17:53
    So you can tell
  • 17:53 - 17:55
that he needs to clarify something.
  • 17:55 - 17:58
(Derek) Why would he have to do that,
    anybody?
  • 17:58 - 18:01
He didn't do it to Ephesus or to Colossae.
  • 18:01 - 18:06
Why would he have to do that
    for Galatia? Alyssa?
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    (Alyssa) This is still early.
  • 18:08 - 18:10
Remember, he had to go to all those places
  • 18:10 - 18:12
    and represent himself anew
  • 18:12 - 18:13
    to each new church,
  • 18:13 - 18:15
so maybe he was still kind of having
    to defend
  • 18:15 - 18:17
    that God did call him.
  • 18:17 - 18:18
    (Derek) Possibly. Of course,
  • 18:18 - 18:21
we haven't read the letter yet, have we?
  • 18:21 - 18:23
    That is a possibility, though.
  • 18:23 - 18:25
He's like, "You may not know me,"
  • 18:25 - 18:27
    but actually there's something else
  • 18:27 - 18:29
    going on here. Nicole?
  • 18:29 - 18:31
    (Nicole) His letter talks
    about false teachings,
  • 18:31 - 18:36
so in this case he's saying, "Listen,
    I'm from God.
  • 18:36 - 18:37
    I'm an apostle of God.
  • 18:37 - 18:39
I'm bringing you the truth and the Word
  • 18:39 - 18:40
    that you need to hear,
  • 18:40 - 18:42
and I want you all to be careful
  • 18:42 - 18:44
of what else is going on around you
  • 18:44 - 18:45
that may draw you away from Christ."
  • 18:45 - 18:48
(Derek) And implied (stay with me now),
  • 18:48 - 18:50
    implied is that these people
  • 18:50 - 18:53
who are giving these false teachings
  • 18:53 - 18:55
    are saying what, about Paul?
  • 18:55 - 18:57
(Team) That he's not from God.
  • 18:57 - 18:59
(Derek) He's not a true apostle, right?
  • 18:59 - 19:03
Or he's sent by man and not sent by God.
    Jonathan?
  • 19:03 - 19:05
(Jonathan) It seems like multiple times
  • 19:05 - 19:07
    throughout this that
    he's emphasizing this,
  • 19:07 - 19:08
    that, "My authority doesn't come
  • 19:08 - 19:10
based on other people; it's God."
  • 19:10 - 19:12
    It's the truth that matters
    and not people.
  • 19:12 - 19:15
(Derek) Well let's take a look
as we read on in Galatians.
  • 19:15 - 19:16
    Jason, if you could read
  • 19:16 - 19:18
    the first six verses,
  • 19:18 - 19:21
it will include the initial salutation
    that we read,
  • 19:21 - 19:22
    verses 1 through 6.
  • 19:22 - 19:25
    He's going to go past
  • 19:25 - 19:27
    saying thank you about anything,
  • 19:27 - 19:30
    and he's going to come
right to the issue at hand.
  • 19:30 - 19:33
    Let's take a look, Galatians 1:1-6.
  • 19:33 - 19:34
    (Jason) I'll be reading
  • 19:34 - 19:36
from the New King James Version,
  • 19:36 - 19:39
    Galatians, chapter 1, verses 1 through 6:
  • 20:22 - 20:24
(Derek) Whoa! So something's up here.
  • 20:24 - 20:26
We're going to get right to it,
  • 20:26 - 20:28
but he has kind of given us
    the Gospel message
  • 20:28 - 20:31
right in those first few verses.
  • 20:31 - 20:33
    How would you summarize
    the Gospel message
  • 20:33 - 20:36
    from those verses? Peter.
  • 20:36 - 20:39
    (Peter) The salutation
that he gives there, grace and peace,
  • 20:39 - 20:41
    is very interesting to me,
  • 20:41 - 20:42
    and is actually used
  • 20:42 - 20:43
    almost in every letter,
  • 20:43 - 20:45
    and Peter uses it,
  • 20:45 - 20:46
    "Grace and peace to you."
  • 20:46 - 20:47
    ""Grace and peace to you."
  • 20:47 - 20:50
And it's almost like, the heart of God,
  • 20:50 - 20:52
    full of grace, brings something
  • 20:52 - 20:53
    to our hearts - peace,
  • 20:53 - 20:55
and He does that through forgiveness,
  • 20:55 - 20:57
and this is given to all men.
  • 20:57 - 21:00
(Derek) So even in the greeting
    you're seeing a message.
  • 21:00 - 21:01
    Many Bible scholars would say
  • 21:01 - 21:04
grace would be a more typical
    New Testament,
  • 21:04 - 21:06
    and shalom, or peace,
  • 21:06 - 21:08
would be more from the Hebrew heritage,
  • 21:08 - 21:10
    but we're bringing both
  • 21:10 - 21:11
    in Christ Jesus, right?
  • 21:11 - 21:13
    What's the message?
  • 21:13 - 21:14
    What did you hear
  • 21:14 - 21:18
in the first six verses, anybody?
    Yes, Alyssa?
  • 21:18 - 21:21
    (Alyssa) Christ died for us,
    but in accordance
  • 21:21 - 21:26
that God the whole Trinity is
working together also, he mentions that.
  • 21:26 - 21:29
And that when we've been transformed
    by that message,
  • 21:29 - 21:31
we give glory back to Him.
  • 21:31 - 21:34
    (Derek) Yeah, "He gave Himself
    for our sins,"
  • 21:34 - 21:36
is the way my Bible translates it,
  • 21:36 - 21:40
"that he might deliver us from..."?
  • 21:40 - 21:41
    (Team) Evil.
  • 21:41 - 21:43
    (Derek) "...this present evil age,
    according to the will
  • 21:43 - 21:47
of God our Father, to whom be glory,"
and then he, like, "God is awesome."
  • 21:47 - 21:50
You know, he kind of ends
    his little statement there.
  • 21:50 - 21:51
    But he, up front, says,
  • 21:51 - 21:56
"This is God's plan of salvation,
    through Jesus...," right?
  • 21:56 - 22:00
    "...to deliver us
    from the present evil age.
  • 22:00 - 22:04
    What is wrong with you?"
    (Thank you, Nicole.)
  • 22:04 - 22:09
"Where did you get some other gospel?"
  • 22:09 - 22:13
    Some other...what does
the word gospel mean, do you know?
  • 22:13 - 22:14
    (Team) Good News.
  • 22:14 - 22:18
(Derek) "Where do you find some other news
that isn't good news at all?"
  • 22:18 - 22:22
    So he obviously is dealing,
    immediately, with a challenge.
  • 22:22 - 22:24
Now before we go into that,
  • 22:24 - 22:27
a revelation about the Good News
  • 22:27 - 22:30
was not only given to him, right?
  • 22:30 - 22:33
Let's go back; in our first study
    in this series,
  • 22:33 - 22:37
    we looked at that amazing
    concise statement by Peter.
  • 22:37 - 22:39
    Do you remember that?
  • 22:39 - 22:40
    Guided by the Holy Spirit.
  • 22:40 - 22:44
    In Acts 10, verses 34 to 43.
  • 22:44 - 22:45
I want to hear that again.
  • 22:45 - 22:47
    I'm always amazed - Nicole,
  • 22:47 - 22:48
if you could read it for us -
  • 22:48 - 22:52
I'm always amazed at the brilliance
  • 22:52 - 22:54
    of this concise statement
  • 22:54 - 22:55
    about the Gospel message.
  • 22:55 - 22:58
And we know it's not because Peter says,
  • 22:58 - 22:59
    "Well, I'm a great scholar."
  • 22:59 - 23:01
No, no, he was a fisherman
  • 23:01 - 23:03
who wholly surrendered his life to God,
  • 23:03 - 23:05
and by the Spirit he's speaking.
  • 23:05 - 23:07
    So let's hear his testimony.
  • 23:07 - 23:11
    (Nicole) I'm reading Acts 10,
    verses 34 through 43,
  • 23:11 - 23:14
and I'm reading from the New
    International Version, and it says:
  • 24:34 - 24:36
    (Derek) I love that;
    it's so powerful, isn't it?
  • 24:36 - 24:39
And by the way, when he says,
    "as all the prophets,"
  • 24:39 - 24:41
he kind of says that it's the testimony
  • 24:41 - 24:42
    of the whole Scripture.
  • 24:42 - 24:45
It reminds me of a Bible study
    that Jesus gave.
  • 24:45 - 24:47
Do you remember when that was,
    Tricia Lee?
  • 24:47 - 24:50
    (Tricia Lee) When they were
    walking to Emmaus.
  • 24:50 - 24:53
(Derek) Right, first to Cleopas and the
other disciple on the road to Emmaus,
  • 24:53 - 24:55
    but then with the disciples
  • 24:55 - 24:56
    in the Upper Room.
  • 24:56 - 24:59
And He said, "All of these prophecies,
  • 24:59 - 25:01
    all of the Scriptures," what?
  • 25:01 - 25:02
    (Team) "Testify about Me."
  • 25:02 - 25:05
(Derek) Yeah, they "testify about Me,
    and not only about Me
  • 25:05 - 25:07
but that I had to suffer." Why?
  • 25:07 - 25:09
He suffered for our sins, right?
  • 25:09 - 25:11
He bore our sins that He might...?
  • 25:11 - 25:13
    What was that wonderful word?
  • 25:13 - 25:14
    (Team Member) Deliver us.
  • 25:14 - 25:16
    (Derek) Deliver us
    from this present evil age.
  • 25:16 - 25:19
Wonderful news, but all of that...
  • 25:19 - 25:21
    You say, "That's a great summary;
  • 25:21 - 25:23
I'm going to write it down, Acts 10:34-43.
  • 25:23 - 25:26
If anybody, non-Christian, comes and says,
  • 25:26 - 25:28
'Could you give it to me
  • 25:28 - 25:29
in like just a couple of minutes?'"
  • 25:29 - 25:33
You say, "Well, let me read to you
what the Holy Spirit said through Peter."
  • 25:33 - 25:35
But we could get even more concise
    than that.
  • 25:35 - 25:37
    Someone have John 3:16,
  • 25:37 - 25:39
who would read it for us?
  • 25:39 - 25:41
    Anybody have John 3:16?
  • 25:41 - 25:43
You say, "I'd like to repeat it."
  • 25:43 - 25:46
    John 3:16, got a volunteer?
  • 25:46 - 25:48
Jason, read it for us, please.
  • 25:48 - 25:54
(Jason) I'll be reading from the New
    King James Version, John 3:16:
  • 26:06 - 26:08
    (Derek) Well, that challenges
  • 26:08 - 26:09
    the whole idea that it's
  • 26:09 - 26:11
    just for the Jews, right?
  • 26:11 - 26:13
    It says "whoever."
  • 26:13 - 26:15
    God so loved the...?
  • 26:15 - 26:16
    (Team) World.
  • 26:16 - 26:18
(Derek) I mean it's right there
  • 26:18 - 26:19
    in that very simple statement.
  • 26:19 - 26:22
So, I have a question for you, Mario.
  • 26:22 - 26:25
Why do people make the Gospel message,
  • 26:25 - 26:27
the Good News about what God has done
  • 26:27 - 26:28
    for us in Jesus,
  • 26:28 - 26:30
why do people make it so complicated?
  • 26:30 - 26:34
    (Mario) Oh, wow, we have
    something inside of us
  • 26:34 - 26:40
that wants to give out steps or processes
    to accomplish things.
  • 26:40 - 26:44
I mean, in our jobs and in school,
  • 26:44 - 26:47
    there's this system
    that tells us, you know,
  • 26:47 - 26:49
you have to do this and this and this,
  • 26:49 - 26:51
and then you can get what you want.
  • 26:51 - 26:53
So it's hard for us to conceive
  • 26:53 - 26:57
that a God can love us
  • 26:57 - 26:59
    and give something to us
  • 26:59 - 27:03
    without us having to do
    something to earn it,
  • 27:03 - 27:04
but that it is a gift
  • 27:04 - 27:07
if we would just submit to His will...
  • 27:07 - 27:08
    (Derek) Now the New Testament
  • 27:08 - 27:11
and especially the writings of Paul
  • 27:11 - 27:13
are all about a new creation.
  • 27:13 - 27:15
    They're all about deliverance
  • 27:15 - 27:18
    from the present evil age,
  • 27:18 - 27:21
    but that is the fruit
  • 27:21 - 27:23
    of accepting the Gospel message.
  • 27:23 - 27:25
Somehow we try to make it
  • 27:25 - 27:28
    more complicated than
    "whoever believes in Him."
  • 27:28 - 27:29
    We've got several hands.
  • 27:29 - 27:32
Let's take a moment to reflect on this.
  • 27:32 - 27:34
(Harold) One way, and we have
    seen this, actually,
  • 27:34 - 27:36
    throughout the New Testament,
  • 27:36 - 27:38
what we studied last time, traditions.
  • 27:38 - 27:40
At times we fall into a routine,
  • 27:40 - 27:42
    as Tricia Lee mentioned
    in a previous study,
  • 27:42 - 27:45
that at times we are so ingrained...
  • 27:45 - 27:49
we get so comfortable that we believe
  • 27:49 - 27:50
that that's the way to go to be saved.
  • 27:50 - 27:53
    (Derek) That's maybe even
    what the Bible teaches, right?
  • 27:53 - 27:55
Because we've done it for so long,
  • 27:55 - 27:57
or what our religious teacher told us.
  • 27:57 - 27:59
(Harold) Yes, and Jesus even rebuked
    the Pharisees
  • 27:59 - 28:00
    because, "You come to Me,"
  • 28:00 - 28:02
    you know, "with your mouth;
  • 28:02 - 28:04
    you're worshiping with your mouth
    and everything,
  • 28:04 - 28:05
but yet you come to Me
  • 28:05 - 28:07
    by the commandments of men."
  • 28:07 - 28:09
And this is found in Matthew,
    chapter 15.
  • 28:09 - 28:11
(Derek) Right, so that could happen
  • 28:11 - 28:13
for us, too, right? Tricia Lee?
  • 28:13 - 28:17
    (Tricia Lee) He's reminding us
that we're in an evil age.
  • 28:17 - 28:19
    The devil is out there
    trying to deceive us.
  • 28:19 - 28:22
    From the garden he said,
    "Did God really say?"
  • 28:22 - 28:26
And when we have simple truths
    about salvation, that doubt comes
  • 28:26 - 28:30
into our minds like, is it really
that easy to be saved through Christ?
  • 28:30 - 28:36
You can hang your doubts on anything,
but it's just like, we have to believe
  • 28:36 - 28:41
the true Word that God says,
and not question this simple path
  • 28:41 - 28:42
    that God already laid out.
  • 28:42 - 28:45
(Derek) I guess there's two approaches
    that the devil could bring.
  • 28:45 - 28:49
    One would be to say,
  • 28:49 - 28:52
    it's not that simple, right?
    It's more complicated,
  • 28:52 - 28:55
    or it's not even true.
  • 28:55 - 28:58
    This is not true,
  • 28:58 - 29:00
but it's not that simple, you know?
  • 29:00 - 29:04
    (Tricia Lee) Is He really
going to forgive you if you ask Him?
  • 29:04 - 29:05
(Derek) Or maybe it's for someone else,
  • 29:05 - 29:08
but would it really be for you?
  • 29:08 - 29:12
Anybody else? Why do we make it
    so complicated, Jonathan?
  • 29:12 - 29:15
(Jonathan) I think sometimes we really
    want it to be...
  • 29:15 - 29:16
    It's an issue of pride.
  • 29:16 - 29:21
I mean like, if I can make all these
    so wonderful thoughts and ideas,
  • 29:21 - 29:25
then it becomes about me and about what
I'm doing or what I'm thinking
  • 29:25 - 29:29
or having the right knowledge, but this is
so simple, like a child can understand.
  • 29:29 - 29:33
    (Derek) Didn't Jesus say something
about we need to become as little children
  • 29:33 - 29:36
if we would enter the Kingdom?
  • 29:36 - 29:37
    (Jonathan) That's humbling.
  • 29:37 - 29:39
    (Derek) It requires humility?
  • 29:39 - 29:41
    (Jonathan) Yeah.
  • 29:41 - 29:42
    (Derek) Yes, Peter.
  • 29:42 - 29:45
    (Peter) I was thinking, too,
    that sometimes maybe...
  • 29:45 - 29:46
    can God be that good?
  • 29:46 - 29:48
    Can it be that good?
  • 29:48 - 29:50
(Derek) You mean a distorted picture
  • 29:50 - 29:52
    of the character of God
  • 29:52 - 29:53
    could hold me back
  • 29:53 - 29:55
from believing that God could be
  • 29:55 - 29:56
    that good to me.
  • 29:56 - 29:57
    (Peter) Right, right.
  • 29:57 - 29:59
    (Derek) Part of the reason
  • 29:59 - 30:00
    we study the Bible
  • 30:00 - 30:02
is to find out the truth about God, right?
  • 30:02 - 30:03
    Joshua?
  • 30:03 - 30:05
(Joshua) I believe it was along the lines
  • 30:05 - 30:06
    of what Jonathan said.
  • 30:06 - 30:08
    He mentioned that, you know,
  • 30:08 - 30:10
the Gospel is even for little children,
  • 30:10 - 30:12
as easy that they can understand it.
  • 30:12 - 30:14
And I remember as a child
  • 30:14 - 30:15
    I always saw the Gospel
  • 30:15 - 30:18
as something that was easy to digest,
  • 30:18 - 30:19
    like Jesus loves me,
  • 30:19 - 30:22
He wants to save us from our sins,
  • 30:22 - 30:24
we're going to Heaven one day,
  • 30:24 - 30:25
    and it was that simple.
  • 30:25 - 30:27
But then as I got older,
  • 30:27 - 30:30
things started to become more and more
    and more complicated.
  • 30:30 - 30:33
People are like, "Oh! This prophecy,
    that prophecy."
  • 30:33 - 30:34
"We have to be saved through this."
  • 30:34 - 30:37
    "If you do this,
this is going to happen to you."
  • 30:37 - 30:40
And your mind just has this,
  • 30:40 - 30:43
    for some people,
    a spiritual breakdown.
  • 30:43 - 30:45
Like, "Whoa, it takes all of that now?
  • 30:45 - 30:47
Every move that I make now,
  • 30:47 - 30:48
    I have to be worried
  • 30:48 - 30:51
if God is going to like me or not like me?
  • 30:51 - 30:53
Is He going to strike me from Heaven?"
  • 30:53 - 30:56
And I think that we lose touch
  • 30:56 - 31:00
of that real essence of who Christ is,
  • 31:00 - 31:03
    making things complicated,
    as we've been discussing.
  • 31:03 - 31:05
    (Derek) "Whoever believes in Him
  • 31:05 - 31:06
    should not perish."
  • 31:06 - 31:08
But of course we need Scripture
  • 31:08 - 31:09
    to know who He is.
  • 31:09 - 31:12
    Otherwise we could
    make up some Jesus, right?
  • 31:12 - 31:13
    The Bible is crucial,
  • 31:13 - 31:15
and Jesus, when He said, "Baptize
  • 31:15 - 31:18
in the name of the Father, Son
    and Holy Spirit,"
  • 31:18 - 31:20
    He did say, "Teach them
  • 31:20 - 31:22
to observe all things I've commanded you."
  • 31:22 - 31:26
But all of that is an outgrowth
  • 31:26 - 31:28
    of my relationship with Him
  • 31:28 - 31:29
    as my Savior, right?
  • 31:29 - 31:30
    Well, let's go back
  • 31:30 - 31:32
    to the letter of Galatians,
  • 31:32 - 31:33
    and, Laurel, could you read
  • 31:33 - 31:36
    Galatians 1, verses 6 through 9?
  • 31:36 - 31:38
Like we noticed in the first part
  • 31:38 - 31:41
    (we read verse 6 already,
    but read it again),
  • 31:41 - 31:42
he skips over, "I'm really thankful
  • 31:42 - 31:44
    for so much about you,"
  • 31:44 - 31:45
    and comes in - boom!
  • 31:45 - 31:47
    "We've got a problem here."
  • 31:47 - 31:49
    Let's read verses 6 through 9
    of Galatians 1.
  • 31:49 - 31:52
(Laurel) I'll be reading from the New
    King James Version:
  • 32:30 - 32:31
    (Derek) Now that word accursed,
  • 32:31 - 32:33
I've got in my margin, there,
  • 32:33 - 32:34
    is the word anathema.
  • 32:34 - 32:36
    I mean, it's not like,
  • 32:36 - 32:38
"That's not a good thing to do."
  • 32:38 - 32:40
    It's like really strong language.
  • 32:40 - 32:44
Why is Paul...and someone could say,
  • 32:44 - 32:45
    "Well, that's your perspective;
  • 32:45 - 32:46
    this is my perspective"...
  • 32:46 - 32:50
why is he so intense about people...
  • 32:50 - 32:54
"You cannot preach some other gospel,
  • 32:54 - 32:58
    other than what was manifest
    through Jesus," Marcus?
  • 32:58 - 33:01
    (Marcus) Because that would portray
    a false Christ.
  • 33:01 - 33:03
Just like you said, earlier, as well,
  • 33:03 - 33:05
you said that it's not the same Christ
  • 33:05 - 33:06
    if you pervert the Gospel,
  • 33:06 - 33:08
and this is the early church.
  • 33:08 - 33:09
So, what comes out of this
  • 33:09 - 33:12
    may affect future churches
    in the next generation.
  • 33:12 - 33:13
(Derek) So it's not so much
  • 33:13 - 33:15
that, "You don't like my teaching,"
  • 33:15 - 33:19
    as "You're saying something
    about God that isn't true!"
  • 33:19 - 33:20
    (Team) Yes.
  • 33:20 - 33:22
    (Derek) And...? And what?
  • 33:22 - 33:24
    What's the implication of that?
  • 33:24 - 33:26
    Destruction for people!
  • 33:26 - 33:28
    This is life and death!
  • 33:28 - 33:32
It's not just, "Do you like your sermon
    or your sermon?"
  • 33:32 - 33:34
    This is life and death;
  • 33:34 - 33:36
we're talking about how people can be
  • 33:36 - 33:39
    set right with God, right?
    Yes, Mario.
  • 33:39 - 33:40
    (Mario) I just feel like
  • 33:40 - 33:41
    I need to highlight,
  • 33:41 - 33:43
the same applies to us today.
  • 33:43 - 33:46
This is about the character of Christ
  • 33:46 - 33:50
as perceived in someone else's eyes
    through our testimony,
  • 33:50 - 33:53
and we get hung up on our doctrine
  • 33:53 - 33:56
    as a means to salvation.
  • 33:56 - 33:58
And there are so many things that we try
  • 33:58 - 34:01
to hang the hat of salvation on,
  • 34:01 - 34:03
but we've got to preach Christ
  • 34:03 - 34:05
and Him crucified, as Paul said, you know,
  • 34:05 - 34:07
and we have to be careful about that.
  • 34:07 - 34:09
(Derek) Now, some people might get
  • 34:09 - 34:11
    a little offended with Paul.
  • 34:11 - 34:13
    They'd say, "Paul, that's a little,"
  • 34:13 - 34:15
(we have an expression in English),
  • 34:15 - 34:18
    "over the top. Please."
  • 34:18 - 34:20
But let's look at a couple of places
  • 34:20 - 34:25
    where Jesus was fairly
    (what could I say) direct
  • 34:25 - 34:28
when He felt the same issue,
  • 34:28 - 34:30
    "You're getting in the way
  • 34:30 - 34:33
of people learning the truth about God."
  • 34:33 - 34:36
    Mark, chapter 9, verse 42,
  • 34:36 - 34:37
    Harold, do you have that?
  • 34:37 - 34:40
Again I do believe that Jesus,
  • 34:40 - 34:43
He spoke with love in His heart.
  • 34:43 - 34:45
    I don't like if He's portrayed
  • 34:45 - 34:48
as some kind of angry Savior,
  • 34:48 - 34:52
but He spoke strongly here, didn't He?
    Mark 5:42?
  • 34:52 - 34:55
(Harold) I'll be reading from the New
    King James Version:
  • 35:10 - 35:13
(Derek) Now, Bible students have discussed
  • 35:13 - 35:15
whether the little ones He's talking about
  • 35:15 - 35:19
    are children or new believers.
  • 35:19 - 35:21
    What do you think?
  • 35:21 - 35:23
    (Team) Both.
  • 35:23 - 35:24
    (Derek) Multiple choice, right?
  • 35:24 - 35:26
    "All of the above," right?
  • 35:26 - 35:28
If you cause a child to stumble
  • 35:28 - 35:30
that they can't, as children do,
  • 35:30 - 35:32
just say, "Jesus, I trust You,
  • 35:32 - 35:34
and I want You to save me,
  • 35:34 - 35:35
and I want to be with You forever,"
  • 35:35 - 35:39
and the Savior says, "Amen," right?
  • 35:39 - 35:41
    But also the new believer?
  • 35:41 - 35:42
    (Team) Yes.
  • 35:42 - 35:46
(Derek) So, we want the new believers
    to learn everything
  • 35:46 - 35:48
    that Jesus taught, right?
  • 35:48 - 35:50
So, how do we do that
  • 35:50 - 35:53
without making a stumbling block for them?
  • 35:53 - 35:55
    What is crucially important
  • 35:55 - 36:00
when we're teaching them all those things?
  • 36:00 - 36:05
Are you stretching your fingers, Nicole?
    Yes, tell me.
  • 36:05 - 36:09
(Nicole) I think that it starts with us
praying and asking for the Spirit
  • 36:09 - 36:14
to fill us with what we need in order
to reach those that we're dealing with.
  • 36:14 - 36:17
And so we don't become a stumbling block
    ourselves, we have to have
  • 36:17 - 36:20
    that connection with Christ
to lead us the right way.
  • 36:20 - 36:22
(Derek) Okay, but we want to teach them
  • 36:22 - 36:23
    to observe all things.
  • 36:23 - 36:28
So how do we do that without
    (what's the word?)
  • 36:28 - 36:30
damaging the Gospel or mutating the Gospel
  • 36:30 - 36:33
    or proclaiming some other Gospel?
  • 36:33 - 36:36
How do we do that? Alyssa?
  • 36:36 - 36:38
    (Alyssa) Well, first, everything
    has to come from Scripture.
  • 36:38 - 36:41
Don't try to show them anything
    that isn't here.
  • 36:41 - 36:45
And also, if they're not secure, yet,
    in their salvation,
  • 36:45 - 36:48
first things have to come first.
  • 36:48 - 36:50
(Derek) So I believe in Bible prophecy,
    it's wonderful.
  • 36:50 - 36:52
By the way, I've met many people
  • 36:52 - 36:56
    who believe in the authenticity
of the Bible by Bible prophecy,
  • 36:56 - 36:59
    but you're saying, "I'm going
    to tell them about Jesus
  • 36:59 - 36:59
    and how to have
  • 36:59 - 37:01
    a living connection with Him,"
  • 37:01 - 37:05
and then we talk about how do we live
    as a Christian,
  • 37:05 - 37:08
rather than, "Here's the list of things
  • 37:08 - 37:12
that can maybe earn God's love and favor
  • 37:12 - 37:13
or maybe earn your way to Heaven."
  • 37:13 - 37:17
(Tricia Lee) It's a great question,
and I think that churches struggle
  • 37:17 - 37:19
with how to disciple and how to teach
    our new believers.
  • 37:19 - 37:23
We should never be afraid of teaching
what the Bible says or what Jesus says,
  • 37:23 - 37:27
but there's a big difference between
teaching what Jesus taught and lived,
  • 37:27 - 37:31
and then now trying to force people
to make those changes and believing
  • 37:31 - 37:35
that we somehow now take on the role
of the Holy Spirit in converting people.
  • 37:35 - 37:38
I can teach you and show you, and I should
never hide what the Bible says,
  • 37:38 - 37:42
but I have to understand my role is
to teach; my role is not to convert.
  • 37:42 - 37:46
I cannot force someone to make a change
that it might have taken me many years
  • 37:46 - 37:47
    to come to, myself.
  • 37:47 - 37:51
So we have to have patience and humility
and realize that we are only
  • 37:51 - 37:54
pointing people to the Bible teachings
and allowing the Holy Spirit to work
  • 37:54 - 37:57
that miracle in their life just like
    He worked in our lives.
  • 37:57 - 38:01
But we shouldn't be afraid to show
    somebody what the Bible says
  • 38:01 - 38:04
just because it might be too much; maybe
we should hide it from them now - no.
  • 38:04 - 38:08
    The Bible teaches all these things;
it's okay to teach it, but we should never
  • 38:08 - 38:12
feel like we have to force someone to make
the same change, just like we have.
  • 38:12 - 38:15
(Derek) And would it be okay to say
we always need to remind them
  • 38:15 - 38:18
what the foundation of our faith...
    where it is?
  • 38:18 - 38:20
    It's in Jesus, right?
    Our Savior.
  • 38:20 - 38:23
Saved by His grace through faith?
  • 38:23 - 38:26
    Let's talk about healthful living,
  • 38:26 - 38:27
    or let's talk about...
  • 38:27 - 38:29
    you could name something else...
  • 38:29 - 38:31
    how Jesus is coming back,
  • 38:31 - 38:35
but first I have to talk
    about the Gospel message, right?
  • 38:35 - 38:36
    And the assurance of salvation.
  • 38:36 - 38:38
    Several hands raised. Peter?
  • 38:38 - 38:42
(Peter) I was just going to say when we
talk about, like, we're saying doctrine
  • 38:42 - 38:45
    or anything, living, Jesus sits
for His portrait, and how we present
  • 38:45 - 38:46
    the teachings of the Bible.
  • 38:46 - 38:49
    And what portrait of Jesus
are you painting in your doctrine,
  • 38:49 - 38:51
in your lifestyle that you're coaching,
  • 38:51 - 38:53
    whatever it is, X, Y, Z - fill it in -
  • 38:53 - 38:55
what portrait of Jesus are you painting?
  • 38:55 - 38:57
(Derek) First I have to know
  • 38:57 - 38:59
the truth about Jesus and who He was.
  • 38:59 - 39:00
    Jonathan?
  • 39:00 - 39:04
    (Jonathan) I was thinking how,
in a musical, you can have the same notes,
  • 39:04 - 39:07
even in the same order, but if you change,
    like maybe if you start
  • 39:07 - 39:11
with a different emphasis, or if you put
it in a different bass note or something,
  • 39:11 - 39:12
    the music totally changes.
  • 39:12 - 39:15
You can be saying the same things,
    but if you're emphasizing
  • 39:15 - 39:21
without that foundation of who God is,
His love for us, and salvation,
  • 39:21 - 39:25
    then you're communicating
a different song, a different tone.
  • 39:25 - 39:26
    (Derek) One other text
  • 39:26 - 39:28
    where Jesus spoke rather strongly,
  • 39:28 - 39:32
in Matthew 23:13, 14, He was saying,
  • 39:32 - 39:34
"Don't get in the way of people
  • 39:34 - 39:37
    knowing the truth about Me."
  • 39:37 - 39:41
Christine, do you have Matthew 23,
    verses 13 and 14?
  • 39:41 - 39:45
(Christine) I'll be reading from the New
    King James Version,
  • 39:45 - 39:49
    Matthew, chapter 23, verses 13 and 14;
    it says:
  • 40:13 - 40:15
(Derek) And what does it say at the end?
  • 40:15 - 40:16
    "You will receive" what?
  • 40:16 - 40:19
    (Derek, Team) A greater condemnation.
  • 40:19 - 40:24
(Derek) You know, you will be
    held accountable.
  • 40:24 - 40:26
    Isn't that what it's saying?
  • 40:26 - 40:27
    For getting in the way
  • 40:27 - 40:29
    of people knowing the truth.
  • 40:29 - 40:30
Now I don't know about you,
  • 40:30 - 40:33
but we're here, and this is an in-depth,
    interactive Bible study;
  • 40:33 - 40:35
we've got a lot of people watching this.
  • 40:35 - 40:37
That would cause me to be praying,
  • 40:37 - 40:38
    "Oh, Lord, help us
  • 40:38 - 40:41
to tell the truth about You," right?
  • 40:41 - 40:43
"To tell the truth about Your Gospel,
  • 40:43 - 40:46
to tell the truth about the Christian life
  • 40:46 - 40:48
    in response to the grace
  • 40:48 - 40:51
that's been shown to us," and all of that.
  • 40:51 - 40:52
    We want to go now
  • 40:52 - 40:55
and look at where Paul gets his message,
  • 40:55 - 40:57
    because, as someone pointed out
  • 40:57 - 40:59
(Laurel, I think you mentioned earlier),
  • 40:59 - 41:01
he wasn't one of the twelve disciples.
  • 41:01 - 41:03
So where does he get his message?
  • 41:03 - 41:04
    Well let's take a look
  • 41:04 - 41:05
    at his own testimony,
  • 41:05 - 41:07
and we're looking in Galatians, chapter 1,
  • 41:07 - 41:09
    verses 11 through 17,
  • 41:09 - 41:11
and then we'll read on in the chapter
  • 41:11 - 41:15
and also testimony from his letter
    to the Corinthians.
  • 41:15 - 41:17
    But first, Galatians, chapter 1,
  • 41:17 - 41:20
and, Peter, if you could read that for us,
  • 41:20 - 41:21
    verses 11 through 17.
  • 41:21 - 41:26
(Peter) I'm reading Galatians, chapter 1,
    verses 11 to 17,
  • 41:26 - 41:28
in the New King James Version:
  • 42:17 - 42:20
    (Derek) What's he saying?
  • 42:20 - 42:23
    (Harold) He was called
    through God's grace.
  • 42:23 - 42:25
    (Derek) He was called
    through God's grace,
  • 42:25 - 42:28
but more than that, what's he saying?
  • 42:28 - 42:29
    This revelation...?
  • 42:29 - 42:31
    (Nicole) Is not from man.
  • 42:31 - 42:33
    (Derek) "...is not from man.
  • 42:33 - 42:36
I didn't learn it from anyone
    except Jesus!"
  • 42:36 - 42:38
    In that sense he's saying,
  • 42:38 - 42:40
"I may not have walked with Him
  • 42:40 - 42:42
when He was here on Earth,
  • 42:42 - 42:43
    but I've walked with Him
  • 42:43 - 42:45
    since He ascended to Heaven."
  • 42:45 - 42:47
    That's a startling claim, isn't it?
  • 42:47 - 42:48
    But that's what he's saying -
  • 42:48 - 42:53
"This is the way I received the message."
  • 42:53 - 42:56
    Let's keep reading; Mario,
    if you could read,
  • 42:56 - 43:00
    as he continues now,
    in verses 18 through 24.
  • 43:00 - 43:03
    Again, they're saying,
    "You're not a real apostle."
  • 43:03 - 43:06
"You weren't one of the twelve," right?
  • 43:06 - 43:09
"You weren't there; in fact, your history
  • 43:09 - 43:13
    shows you've been fighting
    against the truth."
  • 43:13 - 43:16
Because, by the way, these Judaizers
  • 43:16 - 43:18
    are believers in Jesus.
  • 43:18 - 43:20
So they're not just like those
  • 43:20 - 43:22
    who are opposed to Jesus,
  • 43:22 - 43:24
but they're saying, "But there's more,
  • 43:24 - 43:26
and you're not telling the whole story."
  • 43:26 - 43:28
Paul says, "I've got it from Jesus."
  • 43:28 - 43:30
Reading on, verses 18, is it?
  • 43:30 - 43:34
    (Mario) Through 24, reading Galatians,
  • 43:34 - 43:36
    chapter 1, 18 through 24,
  • 43:36 - 43:38
in the New King James Version:
  • 44:19 - 44:23
    (Derek) That's his testimony,
    "I've been changed."
  • 44:23 - 44:25
Now let's look at one example
  • 44:25 - 44:29
of a revelation given to him,
    1 Corinthians 11.
  • 44:29 - 44:35
He's talking, here, about the beginning
  • 44:35 - 44:37
of what we call the Lord's Supper
  • 44:37 - 44:39
    or the Communion service.
  • 44:39 - 44:41
    Now again, obvious question,
  • 44:41 - 44:43
but was he there in the Upper Room?
  • 44:43 - 44:44
    (Derek, Team) No.
  • 44:44 - 44:46
    (Derek) So, how is he
  • 44:46 - 44:49
going to tell the believers about that?
  • 44:49 - 44:50
Well, let's see what he says.
  • 44:50 - 44:55
    1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Joshua.
  • 44:55 - 44:57
    (Joshua) The Bible says:
  • 45:36 - 45:38
(Derek) That's very specific, isn't it?
  • 45:38 - 45:40
It's not like, "Well, and there was
  • 45:40 - 45:42
this little service in the Upper Room
  • 45:42 - 45:43
    before Jesus was crucified."
  • 45:43 - 45:47
It's actually quoting Jesus, what He said,
  • 45:47 - 45:49
    and explaining what it meant.
  • 45:49 - 45:51
So I have a question for you.
  • 45:51 - 45:54
He says, "I received it from the Lord."
  • 45:54 - 45:57
How did Jesus reveal that to him?
  • 45:57 - 45:59
    Did He appear to him
  • 45:59 - 46:00
    like on the Damascus road?
  • 46:00 - 46:02
Did He give him a vision?
  • 46:02 - 46:04
You know, a vision, he's still awake,
  • 46:04 - 46:08
but he receives a message from Heaven.
  • 46:08 - 46:10
Or a dream, we think of like,
  • 46:10 - 46:13
dreams were given to prophets, too?
  • 46:13 - 46:15
How did Jesus reveal that to him,
  • 46:15 - 46:17
what happened in the Upper Room?
  • 46:17 - 46:19
    The answer is?
  • 46:19 - 46:21
    (Derek, Team) We don't know.
  • 46:21 - 46:22
    (Derek) Could it have been
  • 46:22 - 46:23
    any one of those?
  • 46:23 - 46:24
    (Team) Yes.
  • 46:24 - 46:26
    (Derek) Could the Lord Himself
    have come like He did
  • 46:26 - 46:27
    on the Damascus road?
  • 46:27 - 46:29
Or have given him a vision?
  • 46:29 - 46:34
    But what is Paul
    absolutely convinced about?
  • 46:34 - 46:35
    (Team) That it's from Christ.
  • 46:35 - 46:38
    (Derek) That it's a revelation
    from Jesus, right?
  • 46:38 - 46:41
    So, both that little piece
  • 46:41 - 46:42
of what happened in the Upper Room,
  • 46:42 - 46:46
    but actually the entire message
    he's proclaiming,
  • 46:46 - 46:48
    he said, "This doesn't come from me;
  • 46:48 - 46:49
    it comes from God."
  • 46:49 - 46:51
So why is that so important
  • 46:51 - 46:56
as he's about to speak to the Galatians
  • 46:56 - 46:58
who were listening to false teaching?
  • 46:58 - 47:01
Why is it important that he asserts
  • 47:01 - 47:03
    the source of his message?
  • 47:03 - 47:06
Wouldn't it be enough to say,
  • 47:06 - 47:08
"I learned it from the apostles"?
  • 47:08 - 47:09
    Jason, what do you think?
  • 47:09 - 47:12
    (Jason) Because he's being attacked
as not being connected with Jesus,
  • 47:12 - 47:14
as not being part of that origin.
  • 47:14 - 47:16
    They're saying, "You came in
    after the fact,
  • 47:16 - 47:19
    and you're trying to proclaim
    to us this stuff
  • 47:19 - 47:21
    even though you haven't
    experienced it yourself.
  • 47:21 - 47:23
In fact, you were even one
    of our persecutors,
  • 47:23 - 47:24
    so how do we know
  • 47:24 - 47:26
    that you're actually genuine?"
  • 47:26 - 47:27
    And they're basically challenging him
  • 47:27 - 47:30
by bringing this other gospel in.
  • 47:30 - 47:32
    And he's saying, "Look,
    this is from Jesus,
  • 47:32 - 47:34
and here's the evidence for it."
  • 47:34 - 47:37
    (Derek) We're going to study
  • 47:37 - 47:39
about the whole conflict and the message
  • 47:39 - 47:41
in the Gospel to the Galatians,
  • 47:41 - 47:44
but I just want to pause and ask,
  • 47:44 - 47:47
    does it startle you
  • 47:47 - 47:50
    that Jesus would call someone
  • 47:50 - 47:54
who'd been such a fierce opponent,
  • 47:54 - 48:01
would it be fair to say, to almost become
    a primary witness?
  • 48:01 - 48:03
    I mean, how many books
  • 48:03 - 48:05
    of the New Testament
  • 48:05 - 48:10
did - let's choose some of the Apostles -
    Peter.
  • 48:10 - 48:13
How many books of the New Testament
    did Peter write?
  • 48:13 - 48:16
Well, we've got 1 and 2 Peter, right?
  • 48:16 - 48:17
    That's the clue, right?
  • 48:17 - 48:19
    Give me another Apostle.
  • 48:19 - 48:20
    (Derek, Team) John.
  • 48:20 - 48:22
    (Derek) Okay, how many books
  • 48:22 - 48:25
    of the New Testament
    did John write?
  • 48:25 - 48:27
    Five? Okay, you've got
  • 48:27 - 48:29
    the Gospel of John,
  • 48:29 - 48:32
    1 John, 2 John, 3 John, and?
  • 48:32 - 48:33
    (Team) Revelation.
  • 48:33 - 48:35
    (Derek) He says, the Revelation
    of Jesus Christ
  • 48:35 - 48:36
    through His servant John."
  • 48:36 - 48:38
Okay, so you've got five there.
  • 48:38 - 48:42
    Give me another Apostle
    besides Peter and John.
  • 48:42 - 48:47
Not Timothy, he was not an Apostle, right?
  • 48:47 - 48:50
    But Matthew was...Matthew, how many
    did he write?
  • 48:50 - 48:51
    (Team) One.
  • 48:51 - 48:53
(Derek) One that bears his name,
  • 48:53 - 48:54
    an important Gospel, right?
  • 48:54 - 48:55

    didn't write any books
  • 49:17 - 49:19
    of the New Testament, right?
  • 49:19 - 49:21
And how many did you say, again,

What does that tell you about God?

    Not just about Paul.
  • 49:35 - 49:37

  • 49:37 - 49:41
What does that tell you about God?

(Christine) That God can use anyone
  • 49:43 - 49:45

    an amazing way? Joshua?
  • 51:22 - 51:24
(Joshua) This is helping me to think,
  • 51:24 - 51:28
because if you think about the most
    well-known pastors and evangelists
  • 51:28 - 51:29
    that you hear about
  • 51:29 - 51:31
    throughout the Christian church,
  • 51:31 - 51:33
many of them were not raised
    as Christians.
  • 51:33 - 51:34
    (Derek) Yeah.
  • 51:34 - 51:37
(Joshua) Many of them actually converted
    to Christianity,
  • 51:37 - 51:38
    and through the experience
  • 51:38 - 51:39
    that they had with Jesus,
  • 51:39 - 51:41
    they just went full force,
  • 51:41 - 51:44
and that goes across the board.
  • 51:44 - 51:45
And I think it just goes to show
  • 51:45 - 51:48
that when we have that true conversion,
  • 51:48 - 51:51
our past is no longer a priority.
  • 51:51 - 51:54
Our past is just a shadow of who we were,
  • 51:54 - 51:55

  • 52:01 - 52:05
    I think a literal translation
    is "cow dung,"
  • 52:05 - 52:09
but "rubbish" would be a little more...
  • 52:09 - 52:15
It's garbage compared to the excellency
    of knowing Christ.
  • 52:15 - 52:17
Not just knowing about Him, right?
  • 52:17 - 52:18
    But knowing Him.
  • 52:18 - 52:20
It's like he can't keep quiet.
  • 52:20 - 52:25
And if we're willing...even me? Even me.
  • 52:25 - 52:27
So in the last few minutes we've got,
  • 52:27 - 52:29
I want you to give a testimony
  • 52:29 - 52:32
of how you have been blessed,
  • 52:32 - 52:36
    not only to know Jesus,
  • 52:36 - 52:37
    have that relationship,
  • 52:37 - 52:39
    but you've been blessed,
  • 52:39 - 52:41
    that God would use you
  • 52:41 - 52:43
to share the truth about Jesus
  • 52:43 - 52:45
    with someone else, okay?
  • 52:45 - 52:47
And you may share a specific instance.
  • 52:47 - 52:49
    You may share something
  • 52:49 - 52:50
that's happening to you right now.
  • 52:50 - 52:52
    So let's talk about that.
  • 52:52 - 52:56
We can't share what we don't know, right?
  • 52:56 - 52:58
So, coming to know Him and sharing.
  • 52:58 - 53:00
Who can share a testimony of being blessed
  • 53:00 - 53:02
    as a result of that?
  • 53:02 - 53:03
    We'll start with you, Harold.
  • 53:03 - 53:06
(Harold) One day I was going
    to Radio Shack
  • 53:06 - 53:08
    (that's like an electronics store),
  • 53:08 - 53:09
    and they were closing down.
  • 53:09 - 53:13
    The thought came, "Well,
    since it's closing down,
  • 53:13 - 53:15
there's some people who are there,"
  • 53:15 - 53:17
    and I'm a type that I like
    to talk one-on-one.
  • 53:17 - 53:20
And usually the store's kind of empty.
  • 53:20 - 53:22
    There was this lady,
  • 53:22 - 53:23
    and I had this material,
  • 53:23 - 53:24
and I started talking to her,
  • 53:24 - 53:27
like saying, "Hey, I have this material
    for you,
  • 53:27 - 53:28
    if you're interested."
  • 53:28 - 53:30
    (Derek) So this was something
    about the Bible?
  • 53:30 - 53:32
(Harold) Yeah, all about the Bible.
  • 53:32 - 53:35
Actually that lasted like an hour or more,
    the conversation.
  • 53:35 - 53:38
(Derek) It must have been a quiet day
    at the store.
  • 53:38 - 53:39
    (Harold) No, it was interesting.
  • 53:39 - 53:41
There were more customers coming in.
  • 53:41 - 53:42
    It was so inspiring
  • 53:42 - 53:44
    that I started even asking,
  • 53:44 - 53:46
"Hey, customers, would you be interested?"
  • 53:46 - 53:48
I was not afraid; I was really so blessed
  • 53:48 - 53:50
    because the lady was asking
    so many questions,
  • 53:50 - 53:52
    even asked for material
  • 53:52 - 53:54
that I had at home; this was interesting.
  • 53:54 - 53:56
    I purchased the material
  • 53:56 - 53:57
thinking that I would read it,
  • 53:57 - 53:59
and then she mentioned to me,
  • 53:59 - 54:01
    "I remember reading this book
  • 54:01 - 54:03
back in the day, by this person."
  • 54:03 - 54:05
    And I'm like, "Wow, interesting!"
  • 54:05 - 54:07
I have this book at home,
    and I just bought one,
  • 54:07 - 54:09
thinking that I would use it,
  • 54:09 - 54:10
and I brought it for her.
  • 54:10 - 54:13
She was so blessed and was acknowledging
  • 54:13 - 54:15
all the truth that was being shared,
  • 54:15 - 54:16
    that I felt blessed.
  • 54:16 - 54:18
It was like, wow, somebody received
    God's truth today,
  • 54:18 - 54:20
    even the people who were
    around us, listening,
  • 54:20 - 54:22
    or even receiving the material.
  • 54:22 - 54:24
    That made my day,
  • 54:24 - 54:26
and I thank God for that.
  • 54:26 - 54:28
    (Derek) For those of you
    in the second row,
  • 54:28 - 54:30
you couldn't see he was smiling.
  • 54:30 - 54:32
He was blessed to be used
  • 54:32 - 54:33
    to bless someone else,
  • 54:33 - 54:36
and it sounds like God was at work
even in him getting that book
  • 54:36 - 54:38
    that they wanted to read,
  • 54:38 - 54:40
    and it was already there.
  • 54:40 - 54:42
In some ways you might think,
  • 54:42 - 54:45
    "Well, that's not as dramatic
    as the Damascus road."
  • 54:45 - 54:48
But it was dramatic for you, wasn't it?
  • 54:48 - 54:51
    Anybody else, being blessed? Joshua.
  • 54:51 - 54:55
(Joshua) Years ago, I was in Antigua,
  • 54:55 - 54:58
visiting family, and I was sitting
  • 54:58 - 54:59
    in my Aunt Nola's house,
  • 54:59 - 55:02
and I saw Hope Sabbath School
  • 55:02 - 55:03
    for the first time.
  • 55:03 - 55:04
    As I watched the people...
  • 55:04 - 55:07
(Derek) Was that before you ever became
    a participant?
  • 55:07 - 55:09
(Joshua) Oh, yeah, this was before that.
  • 55:09 - 55:11
I was watching the show, and I said,
  • 55:11 - 55:13
    "I can't really relate to these people;
  • 55:13 - 55:14
    they look too holy."
  • 55:14 - 55:16
And I said, "You know what?
  • 55:16 - 55:19
They're going into all these deep things
    about the Bible,"
  • 55:19 - 55:20
so I just kept watching it.
  • 55:20 - 55:22
I had no idea that God was ever
  • 55:22 - 55:24
going to put me on this show,
  • 55:24 - 55:25
to do this same exact work.
  • 55:25 - 55:27
And now I know that we're not all perfect
  • 55:27 - 55:31
and that through media God can reach
  • 55:31 - 55:32
so many people across the world.
  • 55:32 - 55:34

(Nicole) I would continue what Joshua said
in saying I'm blessed to be

    because I met you
  • 56:23 - 56:27

that I can be a part of this ministry.
