and call him "My chosen servant"
  • Not Synced
    to be an ambassador
  • Not Synced
    for the Gospel message?
  • Not Synced
    How can that happen?
  • Not Synced
(Nicole) Because God loves each and every
one of us and wants us all to be saved.
  • Not Synced
And so He uses us wherever we are to
spread His Word to those He wants to save.
  • Not Synced
In terms of this case, He knew he was
a Zealot, even if it was a Zealot
  • Not Synced
in the time before he was transformed,
and he was doing evil things.
  • Not Synced
God knew that he was a Zealot
and when he was actually changed,
  • Not Synced
he'd be a Zealot for Him.
  • Not Synced
And so God was like, "I know the end

  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced
    That God sees the potential
  • Not Synced
even in the midst of all our stumblings?
  • Not Synced
We're going to talk about Paul
  • Not Synced
    as he writes now.
  • Not Synced
    Many think this was
  • Not Synced
    one of the earliest documents
  • Not Synced
that we have in what we call
    the New Testament,
  • Not Synced
    about 49-50 A.D.
  • Not Synced
And it's written because of a problem
    in the church,
  • Not Synced
but by then, even at that time,
  • Not Synced
    we're going to see
  • Not Synced
    that the Christian church recognized
  • Not Synced
the Holy Spirit working in this man,
  • Not Synced
name changed from Saul of Tarsus to...?
  • Not Synced
    (Team) Paul.
  • Not Synced
    (Derek) Paul the Apostle.
  • Not Synced
So let's start in 2 Peter, chapter 3.
  • Not Synced
    We're going to come back
    to Galatians here,
  • Not Synced
but Jonathan, would you read for us
  • Not Synced
    2 Peter 3, verses 15 and 16.
  • Not Synced
I want you to listen carefully as Peter,
  • Not Synced
in some ways a little humorous,
  • Not Synced
he says, "Paul is not always easy
    to understand,"
  • Not Synced
    but there's a testimony
  • Not Synced
about the authority of his work.
  • Not Synced
    (Jonathan) I'm reading
    from the New International Version:
  • Not Synced
(Derek) So, I've always read that
  • Not Synced
and though, "Oh, it's not always easy
  • Not Synced
to understand Paul," which is true.
  • Not Synced
Sometimes I read a text, and I go,
  • Not Synced
    "What does that mean?"
  • Not Synced
    Maybe I need to come
  • Not Synced
    to Hope Sabbath School
  • Not Synced
    and get a little help
  • Not Synced
    from sisters and brothers.
  • Not Synced
    But there were a couple
    of little phrases there
  • Not Synced
    that showed that Peter,
  • Not Synced
one of the church leaders and apostle,
  • Not Synced
recognized the work of the Apostle Paul
  • Not Synced
    as being from God.
  • Not Synced
    What did you hear?
  • Not Synced
    Laurel, did you hear something
  • Not Synced
    that caught your attention?
  • Not Synced
(Laurel) It just was amazing that Peter,
  • Not Synced
who was part of the original 12
    with Jesus,
  • Not Synced
recognized that Paul was also called,
  • Not Synced
even though he wasn't with Christ
  • Not Synced
when He was physically on Earth.
  • Not Synced
    (Derek) That's right; He wasn't
  • Not Synced
    one of the twelve, right?
  • Not Synced
So he has seen something in his ministry.
  • Not Synced
Didn't Jesus say, "By their fruit..."
  • Not Synced
(Derek, Team) "...you shall know them."
  • Not Synced
    So he had seen something
  • Not Synced
from the fruit of his ministry
  • Not Synced
    that said, "He's an apostle."
  • Not Synced
What does apostle mean, by the way?
    Do you know?
  • Not Synced
    One who's sent out, right?
  • Not Synced
"He's an apostle of Jesus Christ," okay?
  • Not Synced
What else, even in the wording
    of the passage,
  • Not Synced
    did you see something?
  • Not Synced
    Christine and then Marcus.
  • Not Synced
(Christine) It says here in verse 15
  • Not Synced
that God gave Paul the wisdom
    and the knowledge...
  • Not Synced
(Derek) Aha, wisdom, I think the way
    Jonathan read it,
  • Not Synced
wisdom comes from God, all right?
  • Not Synced
Anywhere else, a little clue, Jason?
  • Not Synced
(Jason) In verse 16, he talks about those
  • Not Synced
who twist and distort the meaning,
  • Not Synced
and he's saying they do it
  • Not Synced
    to their own destruction.
  • Not Synced
And so, you can deduce from that,
  • Not Synced
    if you understand it correctly,
  • Not Synced
    that's the way to salvation.
  • Not Synced
He's preaching the message of God.
  • Not Synced
    (Derek) That's an interesting thought,
  • Not Synced
    and actually there's another phrase
    attached to there
  • Not Synced
    which is important, too.
  • Not Synced
    Did you notice it, Peter?
  • Not Synced
(Peter) It says, "as the rest
    of the Scripture."
  • Not Synced
    (Derek) Okay, so he's including
    Paul's testimonies,
  • Not Synced
not only as a wisdom from God
    like Christine said
  • Not Synced
but as part of Scripture, God breathed.
  • Not Synced
It's Peter who says all Scripture
  • Not Synced
    is God breathed, right?
  • Not Synced
    No private interpretation,
  • Not Synced
as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
  • Not Synced
    All right, but that's interesting.
  • Not Synced
    Also, implicitly he's saying,
  • Not Synced
"If you listen, it's for your salvation,"
  • Not Synced
    that gives it authority.
  • Not Synced
    "If you twist it,
  • Not Synced
    it's for your destruction."
  • Not Synced
All right, so Paul is recognized
  • Not Synced
by at least Peter, but I think
  • Not Synced
we could say by the Christian community.
  • Not Synced
    God's at work in him,
  • Not Synced
and God is speaking through him.
  • Not Synced
We're going to look at one of his letters
    in this series,
  • Not Synced
    the gospel to the Galatians.
  • Not Synced
The standard format of a letter...
  • Not Synced
did you find this from your study?
  • Not Synced
What's the standard format of a letter
  • Not Synced
back in those times, Tricia Lee?
  • Not Synced
(Tricia Lee) I don't know about back then,
  • Not Synced
but I do know like when you're
    in grammar school,
  • Not Synced
    you're taught that you start
    with a greeting...
  • Not Synced
    (Derek) Okay.
  • Not Synced
    (Tricia Lee) ...or some type
    of salutation,
  • Not Synced
and then you have who it's to
  • Not Synced
and then the subject of the message,
  • Not Synced
and you kind of end off with some type of,
    you know...
  • Not Synced
(Derek) Farewell or closing remark or?
  • Not Synced
    Is that pretty much, Jason,
  • Not Synced
the way it looked in these letters
  • Not Synced
    during the New Testament era?
  • Not Synced
(Jason) Largely yes, and you generally
  • Not Synced
    start with the positive, too.
  • Not Synced
So you'll say, "Oh, you guys,
  • Not Synced
this is a nice thing about you,"
  • Not Synced
whether you're writing a letter now
  • Not Synced
    or these letters of Paul.
  • Not Synced
    They're always saying,
  • Not Synced
"This is a good thing that you have,"
  • Not Synced
"This is what I like about you."
  • Not Synced
    (Derek) That would probably
  • Not Synced
    still work today, right?
  • Not Synced
If you've got a problem with someone,
  • Not Synced
you can say, "Here's some things
  • Not Synced
I really appreciate about you, but,"
  • Not Synced
    and talk about a problem.
  • Not Synced
And that's pretty much standard format,
  • Not Synced
    greeting, some word of thanksgiving,
  • Not Synced
    body of the letter,
  • Not Synced
    and then some closing remark,
  • Not Synced
    and typically with Paul
  • Not Synced
it would include, "the grace of the Lord
  • Not Synced
be with you," right, something like that.
  • Not Synced
    Let's see how he begins
  • Not Synced
    the letter to the Galatians.
  • Not Synced
    Galatians, chapter 1, verses 1 and 2,
  • Not Synced
and, Alyssa, if you'd read that for us,
  • Not Synced
    and then we'll compare that.
  • Not Synced
    If someone could find
    Ephesians 1, verse 1,
  • Not Synced
    and Colossians 1, verse 1,
  • Not Synced
    let's see if they're similar
  • Not Synced
or if there are some differences.
  • Not Synced
By the way, all of those letters
  • Not Synced
were written by the Apostle Paul.
  • Not Synced

(Joshua) I'll be reading from the New
    King James Version.
  • Not Synced
    The Bible says:
  • Not Synced
(Derek) All right, so that's to the church
    in Ephesus,
  • Not Synced
then he writes to the church in Colossae,
  • Not Synced
we call that Colossians, Marcus, verse 1.
  • Not Synced
(Marcus) I'll be reading from the King
    James Version:
  • Not Synced
(Derek) So what did they have in common,
  • Not Synced
    those three opening salutations?
  • Not Synced
What did they have in common?
  • Not Synced
    (Team Member) He's an apostle.
  • Not Synced
(Derek) Okay so, Paul, an apostle,
    gives his name
  • Not Synced
like we do even today, right?
  • Not Synced
    Gives the name and says
  • Not Synced
    he's an apostle of Jesus.
  • Not Synced
    What was different, Mario?
  • Not Synced
    What did you see different
  • Not Synced
    in the Galatian intro?
  • Not Synced
    (Mario) He expounds on that.
  • Not Synced
He says not by the will of man
  • Not Synced
    but of God, you know.
  • Not Synced
    So you can tell
  • Not Synced
that he needs to clarify something.
  • Not Synced
(Derek) Why would he have to do that,
    anybody?
  • Not Synced
He didn't do it to Ephesus or to Colossae.
  • Not Synced
Why would he have to do that for Galatia,
    Alyssa?
  • Not Synced
    (Alyssa) This is still early.
  • Not Synced
Remember, he had to go to all those places
  • Not Synced
    and represent himself anew
  • Not Synced
    to each new church,
  • Not Synced
so maybe he was still kind of having
    to defend
  • Not Synced
    that God did call him.
  • Not Synced
(Derek) Possibly, of course we haven't
  • Not Synced
read the letter yet, have we?
  • Not Synced
    That is a possibility, though.
  • Not Synced
He's like, "You may not know me,"
  • Not Synced
    but actually there's something else
