Being an introvert is a good thing | Crystal Robello | TEDxStMaryCSSchool
-
0:09 - 0:12I'm here today
trying to be something I'm not. -
0:13 - 0:16Which is something I've been
trying to do for two years now: -
0:16 - 0:19write a TED Talk, share my ideas,
-
0:19 - 0:21talk in front of such
a large group of people. -
0:22 - 0:26I know a lot of you are probably thinking,
"She sounds a bit shy." -
0:26 - 0:28Or maybe, "She probably
gets nervous easily." -
0:29 - 0:34Yeah, all those things
are 100% true, but why? -
0:34 - 0:38To answer simply, I am an introvert.
-
0:38 - 0:40So what is an introvert?
-
0:40 - 0:44An introvert is a quiet person
that doesn't like to talk very much -
0:44 - 0:46and likes to keep their thoughts
mostly to themselves. -
0:46 - 0:51They're the kind of person that goes home
just to relax and have time to think. -
0:51 - 0:54But that's not to say that an outgoing
person can't be an introvert. -
0:54 - 0:57Just as long as they enjoy the quiet time
to get to themselves, -
0:57 - 1:00they're most likely an introvert
to a certain extent. -
1:01 - 1:03So the main thing
I want to address in this talk -
1:03 - 1:07is that there's nothing wrong
with being an introvert. -
1:07 - 1:10However society doesn't see it
in the same lighting. -
1:10 - 1:14Society has taught us that being
an introvert is the worst thing you can be -
1:14 - 1:16and that everyone
should want to be extroverted. -
1:16 - 1:21We're told that being outgoing is good
and being shy and quiet is bad. -
1:22 - 1:25We're told in elementary school
we have to raise our hands, -
1:25 - 1:29participate in class or we lose marks.
-
1:29 - 1:33Every year at parent-teacher interviews,
my parents would hear the same thing, -
1:33 - 1:36"Your daughter is very shy,
she needs to learn to speak up more." -
1:37 - 1:40I was told to share my voice
whenever possible. -
1:40 - 1:44As an introvert, those are
some very hard standards to achieve. -
1:44 - 1:48This is why I joined
the TED Ed Club two years ago - -
1:48 - 1:52to prove to not only myself
but to everyone that I wasn't shy. -
1:52 - 1:55I could write a talk
just like everyone else is doing it. -
1:55 - 1:57No big deal.
-
1:58 - 2:02Slight problem, I never wrote a talk.
-
2:03 - 2:06I couldn't come up with a topic
I was truly passionate about -
2:06 - 2:09that I felt like I wanted
to share with the world. -
2:10 - 2:11I would show up to every meeting
-
2:11 - 2:14and watch my peers continue
to develop their talks -
2:14 - 2:17and I would get frustrated with myself.
-
2:17 - 2:21Why could they share their ideas so easily
and I couldn't even come up with a topic? -
2:21 - 2:26Now, looking back,
I realize I have passions, -
2:26 - 2:30I have views on the world
and I have opinions. -
2:30 - 2:34I just didn't want to share any of them
because I'm an introvert. -
2:35 - 2:37But is there anything wrong with that?
-
2:38 - 2:43Statistics say that 50% of the American
population is made up of introverts. -
2:43 - 2:49So society is telling 50% of Americans
- about 160 million people - -
2:49 - 2:51that they need to change who they are
-
2:51 - 2:55to be accepted,
to be successful and to be happy. -
2:55 - 2:56Keep in mind,
-
2:56 - 2:59within this large group of introverts
are people such as: -
2:59 - 3:06Elton John, Emma Watson, Michael Jordan,
Audrey Hepburn, Albert Einstein, -
3:06 - 3:11and so many more
incredible, inspiring people. -
3:11 - 3:15Do you think being an introvert
has ever stopped any of them -
3:15 - 3:18from achieving their goals
or being happy? -
3:18 - 3:19No.
-
3:19 - 3:22A lot of you have probably been told
something along the lines -
3:22 - 3:26of why be a follower
when you can be a leader. -
3:26 - 3:30But what about every leader
needs a follower? -
3:30 - 3:34Let's look at Mr. Justin Trudeau,
Prime Minister of Canada. -
3:34 - 3:37Do you think he'd be where he is today
without the support of the people? -
3:38 - 3:42If everyone was trying to be a leader
no one would truly succeed -
3:42 - 3:46as it's the followers
that define a true leader. -
3:47 - 3:50But that's not to say that an introvert
can't be a leader. -
3:50 - 3:55Let's look at Abraham Lincoln,
Rosa Parks and Gandhi. -
3:55 - 4:00All incredible inspirational leaders
and all introverts. -
4:01 - 4:03In a business setting,
-
4:03 - 4:06the CEO of a company
will look at an introvert and say, -
4:06 - 4:10"If they're not going to share their ideas
they are useless to me." -
4:10 - 4:11Well, guess what?
-
4:11 - 4:13These companies are missing out.
-
4:14 - 4:18Introverts are known
to be versatile, responsible, -
4:18 - 4:21work well in small groups
and individually. -
4:22 - 4:25So being an introvert
has no effect on how happy -
4:25 - 4:27or how successful you are going to be
-
4:27 - 4:30as long as you see it
in the right lighting. -
4:30 - 4:32If you see yourself as an introvert
-
4:32 - 4:34and think it's the worst
thing in the world, -
4:34 - 4:37you're never going to be
truly happy with yourself -
4:37 - 4:40and you're going to constantly try
to change to conform to society. -
4:41 - 4:44But if you accept yourself
as an introvert and you're happy, -
4:44 - 4:46there's nothing in the way
-
4:46 - 4:49of you achieving your goals
and getting what you want. -
4:50 - 4:55All in all, there is absolutely
nothing wrong with being an introvert. -
4:55 - 4:56No matter what society may say,
-
4:56 - 5:01you don't need to change who you are
because being an introvert is great. -
5:01 - 5:04Before I leave, I want to end
with a quote from the book "Quiet, -
5:04 - 5:07The power of introverts
in a world that can't stop talking" -
5:07 - 5:10by Susan Cain.
-
5:10 - 5:14"The secret to life is to put yourself
in the right lighting. -
5:14 - 5:19For some, it's a Broadway spotlight;
for others, it's a lamplit desk." -
5:19 - 5:24So the next time you see
that quiet kid in the back of the class -
5:24 - 5:26who doesn't participate very much,
-
5:26 - 5:27I want you to think,
-
5:27 - 5:31"I wonder what great things
they're going to come up with next." -
5:31 - 5:32Thank you.
-
5:32 - 5:34(Applause)
