0:13 - 0:15Good afternoon.
-
0:15 - 0:21I am Mallence, and I come
from the richest country in the world. -
0:21 - 0:26It is located in the richest
continent in the world, -
0:26 - 0:29in the West of the richest continent.
-
0:29 - 0:31My country is called Sierra Leone.
-
0:33 - 0:39On the surface we are blessed
with infinite beauty -
0:39 - 0:41and abundance of flora and fauna,
-
0:45 - 0:49producing the most exquisite
harvests of coffee, cocoa, -
0:49 - 0:54fruits, vegetables and caoutchouc.
-
0:54 - 0:57You name it, we’ve got it.
-
0:57 - 1:03We also have diverse wildlife
and vast marine resources, -
1:06 - 1:13and waterfalls, and rivers that run
into the most beautiful beaches. -
1:16 - 1:20The land is golden;
literally, a true paradise, -
1:25 - 1:30which of course is inhabited
by the most beautiful souls. -
1:38 - 1:42We have a very strong cultural heritage.
-
1:43 - 1:46In fact, Sierra Leone had the first
sub-Saharan university. -
1:48 - 1:51Prior to that there was one
in the kingdom of Timbuktu, -
1:51 - 1:53which was the first
university in the world, -
1:53 - 1:58succeeding the great Gnostic
schools of Egypt and Osiris. -
2:02 - 2:04On a deeper level,
-
2:04 - 2:10we are blessed with the real treasures
the kings and queens of this world desire. -
2:17 - 2:21This was the largest
alluvial diamond ever found. -
2:21 - 2:26It weighs almost a thousand carats,
969 to be precise. -
2:28 - 2:33This beauty was found by an old lady
in her backyard about 2 years ago. -
2:33 - 2:35125 carats.
-
2:39 - 2:43Some people mine gold in their backyards.
That’s quite common. -
2:46 - 2:47Besides gold and diamonds,
-
2:47 - 2:52we have about 20 precious minerals
that have been discovered as of today. -
2:53 - 2:58We recently started extracting
huge petroleum reserves -
2:58 - 3:00that have been discovered.
-
3:00 - 3:02We have platinum,
-
3:02 - 3:08ilmenite to make titanium,
rutile to coat jets, iron ore, -
3:08 - 3:12the largest iron ore deposits in Africa,
the third largest in the world. -
3:12 - 3:18Tantalite, also known as coltan, used
in your mobile phones and computers. -
3:18 - 3:21Bauxite for aluminum production,
-
3:21 - 3:27zinc, chrome ore, copper, coal,
phosphates, potassium, salt, lead, -
3:27 - 3:32granite, asbestos, nickel, zircon.
-
3:33 - 3:40Furthermore, we have exquisite timber,
like mahogany and teak. -
3:40 - 3:43And we have the most beautiful
stamps in the world. -
3:43 - 3:45(Laughter)
-
3:45 - 3:50Of course the West needs
Africa’s resources, most desperately, -
3:50 - 3:56to power airplanes, cell phones,
computers and engines. -
3:56 - 3:59And the gold and diamonds of course:
-
3:59 - 4:04a status symbol, to determine
their powers by decor, -
4:04 - 4:06and to give value to their currencies.
-
4:08 - 4:13One thing that keeps me puzzled, despite
having studied finance and economics -
4:13 - 4:16at the world’s best universities,
-
4:16 - 4:19the following question remains unanswered:
-
4:19 - 4:25Why is it that 5,000 units of our currency
is worth one unit of your currency, -
4:25 - 4:29when we are the ones
with the actual gold reserves? -
4:32 - 4:36It’s quite evident that the aid is in fact
not coming from the West to Africa, -
4:36 - 4:38but from Africa to the Western world.
-
4:38 - 4:43The Western world depends on Africa
in every possible way, -
4:43 - 4:47since alternative resources
are scarce out here. -
4:47 - 4:51So how does the West ensure
that the free aid keeps coming? -
4:53 - 4:58By systematically destabilizing
the wealthiest African nations -
4:58 - 5:00and their systems,
-
5:00 - 5:05and all that backed by huge PR campaigns,
-
5:05 - 5:07leaving the entire world
under the impression -
5:07 - 5:09that Africa is poor and dying,
-
5:09 - 5:12and merely surviving
on the mercy of the West. -
5:14 - 5:20Well done, Oxfam, UNICEF,
Red Cross, Life Aid, -
5:20 - 5:22and all the other organizations
-
5:22 - 5:26that continuously run multimillion-dollar
advertisement campaigns -
5:26 - 5:33depicting charity porn, to sustain
that image of Africa, globally. -
5:33 - 5:36Ad campaigns paid for by innocent people
-
5:36 - 5:40under the impression to help
with their donations. -
5:41 - 5:44While one hand gives under
the flashing lights of cameras, -
5:44 - 5:47the other takes, in the shadows.
-
5:49 - 5:53We all know the dollar is worthless,
-
5:53 - 5:57while the euro is merely charged
with German intellect and technology, -
5:57 - 5:59and maybe some Italian pasta.
-
6:00 - 6:05How can one expect donations
from nations that have so little? -
6:05 - 6:08It’s super sweet of you
to come with your colored paper -
6:08 - 6:12in exchange for our gold and diamonds.
-
6:12 - 6:15But instead, you should come empty-handed,
-
6:15 - 6:19filled with integrity and honor.
-
6:20 - 6:25We want to share with you our wealth
and invite you to share with us. -
6:26 - 6:30The perception is
that a healthy and striving Africa -
6:30 - 6:34would not disperse its resources
as freely and cheaply, -
6:34 - 6:37which is logical. Of course.
-
6:37 - 6:42It would instead sell its resources
at world market prices, -
6:43 - 6:47which in turn would destabilize
and weaken Western economies, -
6:47 - 6:52established on the post-colonial
free-meal system. -
6:54 - 6:57Last year, the IMF reports
-
6:57 - 7:02that six out of ten of the world's
fastest growing economies are in Africa, -
7:02 - 7:05measured by their GDP growth.
-
7:05 - 7:08The French treasury, for example,
-
7:08 - 7:14is receiving about 500 billion dollars,
-
7:14 - 7:20year in, year out, in foreign exchange
reserves from African countries -
7:20 - 7:23based on colonial debt
they forced them to pay. -
7:25 - 7:30Former French president Jacques Chirac
stated in an interview recently -
7:30 - 7:36that we have to be honest and acknowledge
that a big part of the money in our banks -
7:36 - 7:41comes precisely from the exploitation
of the African continent. -
7:42 - 7:46In 2008, he stated that without Africa,
-
7:46 - 7:50France will slide down
in the rank of a Third World power. -
7:51 - 7:58This is what happens in the human world.
In the world we have created. -
7:59 - 8:02Have you ever wondered
how things work in nature? -
8:04 - 8:08One would assume that in evolution
the fittest survives. -
8:08 - 8:12However in nature,
any species that is overhunting, -
8:12 - 8:16overexploiting the resources
they depend on as nourishment, -
8:16 - 8:22natural selection would sooner
or later take the predator out, -
8:23 - 8:26because it offsets the balance.
-
8:28 - 8:32Now that I shared my perspective with you,
-
8:32 - 8:35I would like to share
my initiatives with you. -
8:37 - 8:40As a Sierra Leonean,
I am a diamond expert. -
8:41 - 8:44I find them in the rough.
-
8:46 - 8:49What nature created
from the darkest substance, -
8:49 - 8:52under the influence of heat and pressure,
-
8:52 - 8:56transforms into the strongest,
most brilliant rocks. -
8:57 - 9:02These rocks have the consistency
to sustain an entire nation. -
9:03 - 9:06These will be our future leaders.
-
9:07 - 9:11Please meet the FOLORUNSHO
creative collective -
9:11 - 9:15I formed with 21 street kids
that were orphaned and displaced -
9:15 - 9:18as a result of the Sierra
Leonean civil war, -
9:18 - 9:23and ended up living in the street
as early as age 3, -
9:24 - 9:27growing up as outlaws of society.
-
9:29 - 9:30(Video)
-
9:30 - 9:34"My name is Timothy.
But my gangster name is A Fame." -
9:34 - 9:36"I'm Donald Williams
but my nick name is Wanee." -
9:36 - 9:38"My name is Patrick Christian Kargbo."
-
9:38 - 9:40"My name is Allusine Jalloh."
"My name's Momoh Alpha Kamara." -
9:40 - 9:42"My name is Lamin Bangura.
-
9:42 - 9:44But in the streets
they call me Crazy Exhibit." -
9:44 - 9:46"My name is Sahr Morsay."
-
9:46 - 9:49"My name is Sheku Conteh.
In the streets they call me DMX." -
9:49 - 9:51(Music)
-
10:03 - 10:08"I lost my mother and father
during the civil war in Sierra Leone. -
10:08 - 10:13I was brought up by my
grandmother in the village." -
10:13 - 10:16"At the age of 5 years,
-
10:18 - 10:20my stepmother maltreated me,
-
10:20 - 10:26she even put poison into my food."
-
10:29 - 10:36"In Jesus name I pray, amen.
This is the story of my life." -
10:43 - 10:46"We were the ones that formed Lion Base.
-
10:46 - 10:49We were the first ones
to lock the place down, -
10:49 - 10:53till other gangsters came after some time.
-
10:53 - 10:59Now Lion Base is fearful.
It is a fearful crew." -
11:11 - 11:13"You have the hard way and the soft way.
-
11:13 - 11:16The soft way is to steal.
-
11:16 - 11:21The hard way is to carry load
for people at Dorfcourt -
11:21 - 11:23or to collect people’s rubbish."
-
11:23 - 11:25"If you are not strong in the streets,
-
11:25 - 11:31you will die at a young age
or you're going to end up bad." -
11:33 - 11:37"2001 when I came into the streets
I used to do a lot of bad stuff. -
11:37 - 11:41I stole, I used to steal people’s
phones, I used to live a bad life, -
11:41 - 11:45till 2010 when I met Mallence."
-
11:50 - 11:55"From the streets she took me
and put me into a school. -
11:56 - 11:58I live good, now.
-
11:58 - 12:05Then my own thing that I want to do
in the future is to study law. -
12:05 - 12:11I always had that determination
to become a lawyer. -
12:11 - 12:13This is my future."
-
12:13 - 12:15(Music)
-
12:19 - 12:23"My future plan is to be able
to afford my own family. -
12:23 - 12:28Because I've now decided to go to school
to be an international business man." -
12:30 - 12:34"The rough life some of my fellows
in the streets are living, -
12:34 - 12:37I wish they would
or could change like me." -
12:37 - 12:39"Leave the bad lifestyle behind,
-
12:39 - 12:43because this is not how human beings
are supposed to live. -
12:43 - 12:47Human beings are supposed to reason,
-
12:47 - 12:50and wish for a better future
in this world." -
12:50 - 12:51(Music)
-
13:12 - 13:19"It’s not about charity.
It’s all about sharing!" -
13:27 - 13:30(Applause)
-
13:32 - 13:38These guys are my biggest inspiration.
Destiny brought us together. -
13:38 - 13:42I met them by a chance encounter in 2010.
-
13:42 - 13:48In 2011 they all started
living with me, 21 in number. -
13:48 - 13:53Wonderful things happen
when creatives meet with mutual respect. -
13:53 - 13:56How did we go about it?
-
13:56 - 14:00Creativity; that same creativity
that ensured their survival -
14:00 - 14:04under the most adverse
circumstances in the streets -
14:04 - 14:06is channeled into outlets
-
14:06 - 14:13such as art, music, film and fashion.
-
14:15 - 14:18They made the impossible possible.
-
14:18 - 14:20From Lion Base in Sierra Leone
-
14:20 - 14:26to luxury fashion stores
in Paris, New York and Berlin. -
14:27 - 14:32This is what we created single-handedly,
without a single cent in donations, -
14:32 - 14:37without running water,
without electricity, -
14:37 - 14:41most of them not being able to read
and write at the time when I met them. -
14:41 - 14:44And now some of them are studying law,
-
14:44 - 14:49engineering, being filmmakers, and so on.
-
14:50 - 14:57This is made with pure energy,
inspiration and love in Freetown. -
14:58 - 15:01With creativity and passion
as the sole ingredient, -
15:01 - 15:06we participate in a global market
of international competition -
15:06 - 15:09and find our way into the world’s
most exclusive department stores, -
15:09 - 15:13onto the bodies
of the world’s fashion icons, -
15:13 - 15:17and into the most distinguished
art collections and exhibitions -
15:17 - 15:19in Berlin, Paris, New York, Miami.
-
15:19 - 15:24A proven concept that produced
self sufficient individuals, -
15:24 - 15:28financing their own education
into lawyers, engineers, -
15:28 - 15:33filmmakers and artists,
within only three years. -
15:35 - 15:38A concept based on mutual
respect and sharing, -
15:38 - 15:44a blueprint that can be replicated
anywhere, under any circumstances. -
15:44 - 15:49I only had the vision and the insight
to recognize diamonds in the rough, -
15:49 - 15:52and was determined to prove to the world
-
15:52 - 15:58that the absence of donation produces
quality in a self-sufficient manner. -
15:58 - 16:02I believe charity merely creates
inferiority and dependency. -
16:03 - 16:08I want to serve as a bridge
between two worlds I call home, -
16:08 - 16:13to facilitate a fair exchange
between two contrasting worlds -
16:13 - 16:18that become powerful
once balance is reinstalled. -
16:20 - 16:24It’s not about charity,
it’s about sharity. -
16:24 - 16:27Today I invite you
to change your perspective. -
16:27 - 16:31Own your visions of a brighter world.
-
16:31 - 16:37Never see lack, see abundance,
always, everywhere, -
16:37 - 16:39and watch the universe conspire.
-
16:40 - 16:44Don’t focus on problems
but on the solution. -
16:44 - 16:49Remember our perception
of any given situation -
16:49 - 16:52is the only thing
that determines the outcome. -
16:53 - 16:58I am Mallence. I am German, too.
