Prevent the Flu! Eating Disorder Recovery Video with Kati Morton - Influenza

  • Not Synced
(cough) It's flu season! What do we do?
  • Not Synced
    Stay tuned.
  • Not Synced
So it's the winter time. Everybody's
  • Not Synced
getting sick. I was watching on the news.
  • Not Synced
It was like, in the States obviously, 43
  • Not Synced
    states are calling this a - I don't even
  • Not Synced
know - national disaster, or some
  • Not Synced
ridiculous news-like term. But it is
  • Not Synced
the flu season and every year, 5-20
  • Not Synced
percent of the population gets the flu.
  • Not Synced
And obviously these are state statistics,
  • Not Synced
so I'm sorry for those of you who aren't
  • Not Synced
in the States but that gives you a rough
  • Not Synced
idea. I'm sure it's very similar
  • Not Synced
everywhere. But that means that a lot
  • Not Synced
of us are getting sick. And if we're not
  • Not Synced
getting sick, a lot of people around us
  • Not Synced
are getting sick. Aghh. For germophobes
  • Not Synced
it's like the worst time of the year. But
  • Not Synced
anyway, so what do we do? We have to
  • Not Synced
prepare because the thing is, every year
  • Not Synced
over 200,000 people have hospital - bleh,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes I can't talk - hospitalizations
  • Not Synced
due to flu complications. And you know who
  • Not Synced
those people are? That end up in there?
  • Not Synced
The elderly, children, and people who are
  • Not Synced
already sick. And guess what? We sometimes
  • Not Synced
fall in that category. Right? Because
  • Not Synced
we're not eating properly, we're not
  • Not Synced
really taking care of ourselves, and so
  • Not Synced
our immune system is really depressed and
  • Not Synced
we don't really have anything to fight it
  • Not Synced
off. We don't have any of those good bugs
  • Not Synced
that fight off the bad bugs. Right? I
  • Not Synced
think that's what they call them. But
  • Not Synced
anyway, like I said, I'm not a doctor. But
  • Not Synced
we need to prepare. And something I
  • Not Synced
always do every year in preparation, so
  • Not Synced
that I am strong and I can fight, is I
  • Not Synced
get the flu shot. And you know now - like
  • Not Synced
okay, one of my best friends, and I'm
  • Not Synced
not gonna call her out by name but I hope
  • Not Synced
she watches this and she laughs to
  • Not Synced
herself, she's deathly afraid of needles.
  • Not Synced
I mean, one year, cause she works in HR,
  • Not Synced
they gave shots, flu shots, in the office
  • Not Synced
(ah!) she couldn't even handle it - so now
  • Not Synced
it's like a tenth of the size of the
  • Not Synced
needle it used to be. You don't even see
  • Not Synced
it. It's like the smallest needle ever. So
  • Not Synced
for those of you who are afraid, just like
  • Not Synced
look over to the side and like talk to
  • Not Synced
somebody 'cause it will be done before
  • Not Synced
you know it and the needle is not even -
  • Not Synced
I don't even know how it gets in to do
  • Not Synced
what it needs to do - so, flu shot. What
  • Not Synced
else do we do? We hydrate. Now I hear
  • Not Synced
from a lot of you, and I hear from a lot
  • Not Synced
of my clients, "I don't drink water
  • Not Synced
because I'll gain water weight..." No.
  • Not Synced
Not now. Not now. Water is good. Our body
  • Not Synced
needs water and I know, if anything, if
  • Not Synced
you're eating disorder is like a calorie
  • Not Synced
counting, then that doesn't even count.
  • Not Synced
So please fight back against that voice.
  • Not Synced
Do my first task in my workbook. Fight
  • Not Synced
back, because you need to stay hydrated.
  • Not Synced
That's like my number one most scary thing
  • Not Synced
that I hear from my clients is, "I don't
  • Not Synced
drink water." Because we can go longer
  • Not Synced
without food that we can water. So please
  • Not Synced
drink water. Okay. So we're gonna stay
  • Not Synced
hydrated. And we're gonna get our flu
  • Not Synced
shots. Yes, yes, yes. And then, take
  • Not Synced
    preventative measures. Take vitamin C.
  • Not Synced
Drink some orange juice in the morning.
  • Not Synced
I'm a huge fan of Emergen-C. And no this
  • Not Synced
is not a plug. If they were paying me that
  • Not Synced
would be awesome, but they're not. But
  • Not Synced
Emergen-C is great. You can throw it in
  • Not Synced
your water. You shake it up. I have like
  • Not Synced
little water bottles that I take with me
  • Not Synced
to work every day and I drink and fill
  • Not Synced
and drink and fill. Right? 'Cause I'm
  • Not Synced
talking all the time. La-La-La. I get
  • Not Synced
really dry. Water. And I just fill it with
  • Not Synced
    Emergen-C. Ta-da! I think it has like
  • Not Synced
    a thousand-whatever milligrams of
  • Not Synced
Vitamin C to make us strong, so we can
  • Not Synced
fight. Right? Because the flu can really
  • Not Synced
take us out. And the thing that's the
  • Not Synced
worst is because we are already immune
  • Not Synced
system depressed, right? Our immune system
  • Not Synced
is like, "I just can't! I don't have it in
  • Not Synced
me! I'm gonna take a nap!" instead. But,
  • Not Synced
because that's already happening and we
  • Not Synced
are already weak, and we may not be eating
  • Not Synced
enough, the flu really takes us out. And
  • Not Synced
then, guess what? Our little eating
  • Not Synced
disorder is like, "ha ha! I'm gonna take
  • Not Synced
advantage of this and I'm gonna make you
  • Not Synced
do this" and no more! Now you've been
  • Not Synced
feeling sick, you've been throwing up,
  • Not Synced
you've had a fever, no appetite,
  • Not Synced
'cause that's a bad side effect of getting
  • Not Synced
sick, right? It's like, "ha ha! We win!"
  • Not Synced
No! Bad! Bad eating disorder! No more!
  • Not Synced
Right? 'Cause it kind of takes advantage
  • Not Synced
of when we're down and out and it's like
  • Not Synced
"I'm gonna get you." So, we need to
  • Not Synced
protect ourselves. So make sure you're
  • Not Synced
doing those things. Go get the flu shot.
  • Not Synced
CVS, Walgreens - I want to say it's like
  • Not Synced
    $10. I think I paid $10. Plus tax or
  • Not Synced
whatever else they want to charge you for.
  • Not Synced
It probably cost me 15 by the time I was
  • Not Synced
out of there. But, do that. Get that. Get
  • Not Synced
some Emergen-C. They come in a box for
  • Not Synced
like $14, although I live in L.A. so
  • Not Synced
    I'm probably getting screwed. It's
  • Not Synced
    probably like $9.99 somewhere where
  • Not Synced
you guys are. But, get it. Pick it up.
  • Not Synced
    There's Zicam.
