Hope invites | Tsutomu Uematsu | TEDxSapporo
-
0:13 - 0:16Well, so everyone.
Once again, good afternoon. -
0:16 - 0:17(Audience) Good afternoon!
-
0:17 - 0:19Now I'm relaxed.
-
0:20 - 0:22Please bear with me
while I tell you my story. -
0:22 - 0:24It is a story about "hope invites."
-
0:24 - 0:28My mother told me the phrase
when I was a junior high school student. -
0:28 - 0:31That means, if you are hoping for it,
it will come true. -
0:31 - 0:32It's important not to lose hope.
-
0:32 - 0:36It would be wonderful if I could
make friends by giving this talk. -
0:36 - 0:39I hope we become friends.
-
0:39 - 0:43I was born 47 years ago.
-
0:43 - 0:44My name is Tsutomu Uematsu.
-
0:44 - 0:48In a town named Akabira
in the middle of Hokkaido, -
0:48 - 0:51I am running a company
for the very first time in my life. -
0:51 - 0:53And in fact,
-
0:53 - 0:57while we make electromagnets
for recycling, -
0:57 - 1:00we also make rockets.
-
1:00 - 1:03We can do space engineering.
-
1:03 - 1:07We now have skills to build
and launch a complete rocket -
1:07 - 1:10and even launch a complete satellite too.
-
1:10 - 1:11We have an experimental device,
-
1:11 - 1:14only four like this in the world,
and one of them is in Japan. -
1:14 - 1:18It can create zero gravity condition,
which is the same situation as in space. -
1:18 - 1:21We couldn't buy it anywhere,
because nobody was selling it, -
1:21 - 1:23so we managed to develop it by ourselves.
-
1:23 - 1:27However, for me,
space engineering is not my dream. -
1:27 - 1:30To me, it is a mere means.
-
1:31 - 1:35I was born 47 years ago.
-
1:35 - 1:39My grandma told me an important thing
when I was a child. -
1:39 - 1:43On the island of Sakhalin,
which is located in the north of Hokkaido, -
1:43 - 1:46she began a car company, worked hard,
and saved money for a long time. -
1:46 - 1:48I heard she lived a rich life there.
-
1:48 - 1:53But in 1945, Soviet troops
suddenly attacked Sakhalin. -
1:53 - 1:54A lot of people were killed.
-
1:54 - 1:56My grandma realized
-
1:56 - 1:59that it turned her money
into heaps of worthless paper. -
1:59 - 2:02So she told the little me,
-
2:02 - 2:06"Money is ridiculous,
because its value will change. -
2:06 - 2:08If you have money,
do not save it, but buy books. -
2:08 - 2:10Remember everything you read.
-
2:10 - 2:12Nobody can take it away from you,
-
2:12 - 2:14and it will make something new."
-
2:14 - 2:17So I became a boy who loved bookstores.
-
2:17 - 2:20I also had grandpa who I really loved.
-
2:20 - 2:22My grandpa was big and gentle.
-
2:22 - 2:26My fondest memory with him
is the Apollo moon landing. -
2:26 - 2:28I was watching it on TV with him.
-
2:28 - 2:32I remember his happy face,
which I had never seen. -
2:32 - 2:33"Have a look. Have a look.
-
2:33 - 2:35People reached the Moon.
-
2:35 - 2:37You can do it, too."
-
2:37 - 2:40I had never seen him so delighted.
-
2:40 - 2:42I wanted to see his smile again.
-
2:42 - 2:44So when I'd go to a bookstore,
-
2:44 - 2:47I would always pick books
about airplanes and rockets. -
2:47 - 2:50Then every time grandpa
would pat my head with his big hand -
2:50 - 2:51and praise me.
-
2:51 - 2:54I think I might have gotten
into airplanes and rockets -
2:54 - 2:57because I wanted
to see his smile again. -
2:57 - 3:00After that, I encountered
various wonderful books. -
3:00 - 3:03In junior high school,
-
3:03 - 3:07I started to dream of having a job
related to airplanes and rockets. -
3:07 - 3:10I was studying hard in my own way.
-
3:10 - 3:13However, my teacher told me,
-
3:14 - 3:18"Stop talking about that imaginary stuff
and study for the test." -
3:18 - 3:21In fact, I studied about
airplanes and rockets willingly, -
3:21 - 3:23but I neglected my schoolwork.
-
3:23 - 3:24I was doing nothing for it.
-
3:24 - 3:27Moreover, he said to me,
-
3:27 - 3:29"To begin with,
things like space engineering -
3:29 - 3:32are impossible unless
you are really smart. -
3:32 - 3:33It is very costly.
-
3:33 - 3:35So it's a different world.
-
3:35 - 3:37You can't do it."
-
3:37 - 3:40I got really sad.
-
3:40 - 3:42Then I started asking myself,
-
3:42 - 3:44"What is a dream?"
-
3:46 - 3:49Are we only allowed to dream
of what we can likely accomplish? -
3:49 - 3:50However, I wondered,
-
3:50 - 3:53who decides whether we can do it or not?
-
3:53 - 3:55Even though no one knows that
unless we try, -
3:55 - 3:59strangely, people who have never tried
make the judgment. -
3:59 - 4:02Should we pursue
what we cannot do now, as a dream? -
4:02 - 4:05I decided we should.
-
4:05 - 4:07But somehow, they didn't agree.
-
4:07 - 4:10Many grown-ups scared me,
-
4:10 - 4:11like "If you don't study hard,
-
4:11 - 4:14you won't be able to enter
a good school and career path. -
4:14 - 4:15It's going to be tough for you!"
-
4:15 - 4:17I wasn't doing very well at school.
-
4:17 - 4:19So I became worried and asked them,
-
4:19 - 4:21"What is a good company to work for?"
-
4:21 - 4:23Then adults told me
-
4:23 - 4:25that a stable company where we can work
-
4:25 - 4:27to get money without difficulty
is a good company. -
4:27 - 4:30I was confused.
-
4:30 - 4:35The more we study,
the more we will grow in capability. -
4:35 - 4:37However, I was told that I had to study
-
4:37 - 4:40not in order to use these new skills
as much as possible, -
4:40 - 4:42but to work without difficulty.
-
4:42 - 4:45So I thought,
"I don't have to study, do I?" -
4:46 - 4:49But if we have money,
many good things might come around. -
4:49 - 4:50For example...
-
4:50 - 4:51(Laughter)
-
4:51 - 4:53This awesome car!
-
4:53 - 4:55(Applause)
-
4:55 - 4:56It's not mine.
-
4:56 - 4:58This is someone else's car.
-
4:58 - 5:01(Laughter)
-
5:01 - 5:05Can we get this car because we are rich?
-
5:06 - 5:08No, it's not true at all, right?
-
5:08 - 5:11We can get this car by paying money
-
5:11 - 5:15because someone worked hard to create it.
-
5:15 - 5:17The truth is,
it's because there are people -
5:17 - 5:19who do research, make an effort
to make a better one, -
5:19 - 5:22and sell it to you,
you can just simply buy it. -
5:22 - 5:25In fact, money is not special.
-
5:25 - 5:27A dream that requires money
-
5:27 - 5:30or a dream that is impossible
without money -
5:30 - 5:34is, in fact, nothing but a service
that someone offers to you. -
5:34 - 5:36That's what you'd be dreaming of.
-
5:36 - 5:39And the more we can't
accomplish something on our own, -
5:39 - 5:42the more we will need to have
someone accomplish it for us. -
5:42 - 5:45So you'll need
more and more money to live. -
5:45 - 5:47But suppose you can manage it,
-
5:47 - 5:49the more things you can manage,
-
5:49 - 5:51the more you can help someone.
-
5:51 - 5:53So it can be your job.
-
5:53 - 5:57Maybe the important thing
for us to live for -
5:57 - 6:00is finally being able to do
what we couldn't do before. -
6:00 - 6:03It might be something wonderful for us.
-
6:03 - 6:06I believe that what dreams are about
-
6:06 - 6:10is pursuing what we cannot do now.
-
6:12 - 6:15I was determined
to pursue my favorite things. -
6:16 - 6:19However, nobody around me understood me,
-
6:19 - 6:22like my friends, teachers,
and even my parents. -
6:22 - 6:23They said to me,
-
6:23 - 6:25"Are you really sure
about doing that stuff?" -
6:25 - 6:27"It is meaningless, isn't it?"
-
6:27 - 6:28"Are you just trying to show off?"
-
6:28 - 6:29I became lonely.
-
6:29 - 6:33I was not able to share
my favorite things with others. -
6:33 - 6:36However, I had those who supported me.
-
6:36 - 6:39They were in books.
-
6:39 - 6:44They were the Wright brothers
and Edison. -
6:44 - 6:47Just like me, nobody could
understand them either, -
6:47 - 6:48and no one even supported them.
-
6:48 - 6:51However, they kept on
doing their very best. -
6:51 - 6:53It was such great men that saved me.
-
6:53 - 6:56That's why I would not give up.
-
6:56 - 6:58I came to like my favorite things more,
-
6:58 - 7:00and developed my abilities more.
-
7:00 - 7:02I was good at cutting paper.
-
7:02 - 7:06I developed the skill
and made much more things. -
7:06 - 7:12And then I set up my company
to make electromagnets for recycling. -
7:12 - 7:15So, somehow I had to run a company.
-
7:15 - 7:21It was my first time doing that,
but it was surprisingly successful. -
7:21 - 7:23(Laughter)
-
7:23 - 7:27(Applause)
-
7:27 - 7:30Our annual sales increased almost tenfold.
-
7:30 - 7:33I became conceited
and it became a huge failure. -
7:33 - 7:35(Laughter)
-
7:35 - 7:37I got into 200 million yen of debt.
-
7:37 - 7:39I thought it was all my fault.
-
7:39 - 7:41I thought I had to manage
everything by myself. -
7:41 - 7:43I took on worries alone.
-
7:43 - 7:44I blamed myself.
-
7:44 - 7:46After that, I did walk-in sales
throughout Japan -
7:46 - 7:48and only got terrible experiences.
-
7:48 - 7:50So every time I took an airplane,
-
7:50 - 7:53I devoutly prayed
that the plane would crash. -
7:53 - 7:54But the planes never crashed.
-
7:54 - 7:58Eventually, I became a man
who could be nasty and cruel. -
7:58 - 8:01I could defeat and trick rivals.
-
8:01 - 8:05However, I never thought
about what their families were like. -
8:05 - 8:09When our sales began increasing,
a bank clerk praised me. -
8:09 - 8:12However, my thinking was totally off,
-
8:12 - 8:14so I couldn't trust anybody.
-
8:14 - 8:15I was alone.
-
8:15 - 8:19I could see everything
only from a logical point of view. -
8:19 - 8:20In the end, I even thought
-
8:20 - 8:23that I would throw away
all of what was dear to me. -
8:23 - 8:25But at that time,
-
8:25 - 8:27because my company
was in a difficult situation, -
8:27 - 8:30a variety of people all over Japan
gave me advice. -
8:30 - 8:32"You might want to join
Junior Chamber International. -
8:32 - 8:34It will increase your profit."
-
8:34 - 8:36So with evil intent, I joined JCI.
-
8:36 - 8:37(Laughter)
-
8:37 - 8:39But it didn't translate into any profit.
-
8:39 - 8:41(Laughter)
-
8:41 - 8:46However, I got an opportunity
to meet new, amazing people there. -
8:47 - 8:49I made friends.
-
8:49 - 8:55One of them asked me
to work at a foster home as a volunteer. -
8:55 - 8:57Even though we prepared
in earnest for going there, -
8:57 - 8:59it turned out that the children there
-
8:59 - 9:01were those who had been abused
by their parents. -
9:01 - 9:04No one came close to us at first.
-
9:04 - 9:07However, after we tried
to get along with the kids, -
9:07 - 9:09when we were leaving,
they said, "Don't go." -
9:09 - 9:11They wanted to talk with us more.
-
9:11 - 9:13When I was about to leave with my friend,
-
9:13 - 9:15talking about things like,
"We did something good, right? -
9:15 - 9:17Where are we going to drink?,"
-
9:17 - 9:19one boy told me his dream.
-
9:19 - 9:21It was to live with his parents again.
-
9:21 - 9:23I couldn't believe it.
-
9:23 - 9:27I wondered why he still loved his parents,
who had abused him. -
9:27 - 9:30I thought I couldn't do anything good.
-
9:30 - 9:34Even if I donated money
or took him home with me to adopt, -
9:34 - 9:35it wouldn't solve anything.
-
9:35 - 9:38The reason is that
he still loved his parents. -
9:38 - 9:41I wondered why such thing happened,
-
9:41 - 9:43and what I was earning my money for,
-
9:43 - 9:46even at the cost of defeating others.
-
9:46 - 9:48I became confused.
-
9:48 - 9:50Various thoughts were
running around in my head. -
9:50 - 9:54And then, I recalled my sealed memories.
-
9:54 - 9:56Soon after entering elementary school,
-
9:56 - 9:59I was really hated by my homeroom teacher.
-
9:59 - 10:03What I thought about life
and what my grandma told me, -
10:03 - 10:06he'd say it was all impossible.
-
10:06 - 10:09"You will never be able
to make your dream come true," -
10:09 - 10:11he told me many times.
-
10:11 - 10:12My grandpa patted my head,
-
10:12 - 10:15but the teacher hit it over and over.
-
10:15 - 10:17Even though that was very painful for me,
-
10:17 - 10:20there were no adults to save me.
-
10:20 - 10:24I remembered what he said.
-
10:24 - 10:28He always used the word
"It's impossible, anyway." -
10:28 - 10:32I thought it was an awful word.
-
10:32 - 10:34This is the worst phrase
-
10:34 - 10:37to deprive us
of confidence and possibility. -
10:37 - 10:40But it's such an easy word
at the same time. -
10:40 - 10:43This word can be a good excuse
for not doing anything. -
10:43 - 10:46Because it makes you feel relieved,
that word is awful. -
10:46 - 10:50Those who were forced to give up
their future by this word -
10:50 - 10:52will lose their confidence.
-
10:52 - 10:56However, we cannot live
without confidence, no matter what. -
10:56 - 10:59So some of them
who have lost their confidence -
10:59 - 11:03start buying confidence with money
to adorn themselves. -
11:03 - 11:05And they will have to boast about it
-
11:05 - 11:08or look down on others for it.
-
11:08 - 11:11Moreover, because others' success
is inconvenient for them, -
11:11 - 11:13some of them start
hindering others' efforts. -
11:13 - 11:16You might know such people around you.
-
11:16 - 11:21However, they are poor people
who have lost their confidence. -
11:21 - 11:23In order to protect it,
-
11:23 - 11:28they might have no choice
but to take away others' confidence. -
11:28 - 11:32In addition, my company had visitors
from Africa. -
11:32 - 11:35After I talked about my story,
they told me theirs. -
11:35 - 11:37Nowadays in Africa,
-
11:37 - 11:41"I am useless even though I study
and make an effort," -
11:41 - 11:43people with such thoughts
-
11:43 - 11:46who have given up
their dreams and possibilities -
11:46 - 11:49eventually start killing
and robbing others. -
11:49 - 11:52Because they can't do their best
and create anything new, -
11:52 - 11:53their only choice is robbing.
-
11:53 - 11:55Sometimes with a violent assault.
-
11:55 - 11:57They also lie,
-
11:57 - 12:00pretend to be weak,
or deceive others to rob. -
12:00 - 12:04But if we all robbed others,
our society wouldn't work. -
12:04 - 12:09So I realized the awfulness of saying
"It's impossible, anyway." -
12:09 - 12:14People are not born knowing this phrase.
-
12:14 - 12:17Then, when do we happen to learn it?
-
12:17 - 12:20I wondered if it is space
that teaches us the phrase. -
12:20 - 12:22Since the universe is beautiful,
-
12:22 - 12:25everyone longs for it at least once
when we are little. -
12:25 - 12:29But do you think
you can do space engineering? -
12:29 - 12:31Has a notion taken hold of your mind
-
12:31 - 12:34that it costs a large amount of money,
unless you are really smart? -
12:34 - 12:37Have you been convinced
that only the state can do it? -
12:37 - 12:38Who taught you that?
-
12:38 - 12:43It is those who have never tried
that teach you such a thing. -
12:43 - 12:46Those people tell us
that irresponsible excuse -
12:46 - 12:47for not doing it.
-
12:47 - 12:51That makes us confused
about what we should do -
12:51 - 12:52and what we can do.
-
12:52 - 12:57So I decided to eliminate the phrase
"It's impossible, anyway." -
12:57 - 13:00If it is eliminated, bullying, violence,
and wars will disappear. -
13:00 - 13:03I was hoping that child abuse
would disappear as well. -
13:03 - 13:05That's why I started space engineering,
-
13:05 - 13:08which everyone thinks
is "impossible, anyway." -
13:08 - 13:10However, I knew that it was not okay
-
13:10 - 13:12to build a rocket, because it's dangerous.
-
13:12 - 13:14So I had given it up.
-
13:14 - 13:15But God saved me.
-
13:15 - 13:19God let me meet Professor Nagata
from Hokkaido University. -
13:19 - 13:22Miraculously, he was
researching safe rockets. -
13:22 - 13:26And more miraculously, he was about
to give it up due to lack of funds. -
13:26 - 13:28I had no funds, but I had the capability.
-
13:28 - 13:30These two people happened
to meet each other. -
13:30 - 13:34Since that time, I have come to think
that there is a meaning in meeting people. -
13:34 - 13:37God leads you to someone
whom you need to meet. -
13:37 - 13:40Therefore, I believe
that I met every one of you today -
13:40 - 13:42because God suggested that it is time.
-
13:42 - 13:45Professor Nagata and I
could help each other -
13:45 - 13:46because we were imperfect.
-
13:46 - 13:48In fact, we can help each other
-
13:48 - 13:51because each of us doesn't have
everything they need. -
13:51 - 13:53If we were perfect,
we wouldn't need others' help. -
13:53 - 13:56Since we are imperfect,
we can help each other. -
13:56 - 13:59That's why we shouldn't
make fun of someone imperfect. -
13:59 - 14:01We don't have to be ashamed
of ourselves either. -
14:01 - 14:02The important thing
-
14:02 - 14:05is that it's completely unnecessary
to blame ourselves, -
14:05 - 14:07like "I can't do anything perfectly."
-
14:07 - 14:09Truth is, being incomplete is much better
-
14:09 - 14:12than doing nothing
or not being able to do anything. -
14:12 - 14:15It's better to try than to do nothing.
-
14:15 - 14:16So I didn't have to blame myself
-
14:16 - 14:19or think badly of myself
because I had flaws. -
14:19 - 14:21I just should have done things
that I was capable of doing. -
14:21 - 14:23By lending a hand to each other,
-
14:23 - 14:26we can do space engineering today.
-
14:26 - 14:28Many researchers have come
to visit my company -
14:28 - 14:30for experiments and research.
-
14:30 - 14:34And as many as 10,000 children
visit my company every year -
14:34 - 14:36on a school trip or a field trip.
-
14:36 - 14:39To be frank, my company
has only 17 employees. -
14:39 - 14:41(Laughter)
-
14:41 - 14:43It's a little bit tough.
-
14:43 - 14:46But I'm hoping
that as many children as possible -
14:46 - 14:48won't be deprived of opportunities.
-
14:49 - 14:53My belief is that society will be improved
-
14:53 - 14:55if "It's impossible, anyway"
is eliminated. -
14:55 - 14:57But there is a limit
to what I can do on my own, -
14:57 - 14:59so by all means, I need friends.
-
14:59 - 15:01This dream might be unrealizable
in my lifetime. -
15:01 - 15:04That's why I'd like you to give me a hand.
-
15:04 - 15:05From now on,
-
15:05 - 15:08when you hear "It's impossible, anyway,"
-
15:08 - 15:11please say, "Why don't you try
this way, instead?" -
15:11 - 15:14Thanks to this simple phrase,
"It's impossible anyway" will disappear, -
15:14 - 15:18and bullying and violence will disappear
from this world as well. -
15:18 - 15:20So I beg for your help.
-
15:20 - 15:22Think about formal education.
-
15:22 - 15:24We've dedicated ourselves to learning it.
-
15:24 - 15:27Then, is formal education
about being graded? -
15:27 - 15:29That is totally wrong.
-
15:29 - 15:34Education is what humankind has created
to solve social problems. -
15:34 - 15:37It is something
which we've built up desperately. -
15:37 - 15:38Then, what is education?
-
15:38 - 15:42Is education a how-to manual
for teaching a shrewd way of living, -
15:42 - 15:44how to avoid failures or responsibilities?
-
15:44 - 15:46That is completely wrong.
-
15:46 - 15:49Education is about letting children
safely experience failures -
15:49 - 15:51that wouldn't kill them.
-
15:51 - 15:53But somehow, it's gone entirely wrong.
-
15:53 - 15:58The reason is that there were a lot
of adults who considered failure bad. -
15:58 - 16:02Such people have taken away
our sense of possibility and confidence. -
16:03 - 16:05But it's going to be all right.
-
16:05 - 16:08In order to make Japan and the world
better in the future, -
16:08 - 16:11we need more people who are eager to do
what they've never done -
16:11 - 16:13and who do not give up
and can try another way. -
16:13 - 16:16They are those who do not lose
to "It's impossible, anyway." -
16:16 - 16:18Who are such people, then?
-
16:18 - 16:20The answer is every one of you.
-
16:20 - 16:21Everybody is like that.
-
16:21 - 16:25It is because every person
experiences childhood, inevitably. -
16:25 - 16:27Please remember your childhood.
-
16:27 - 16:28When we were little,
-
16:28 - 16:31if there was a button,
we wanted to push it. -
16:31 - 16:33If there was a handle,
we wanted to turn it. -
16:33 - 16:36Then we would get yelled at,
"Just quit it!" -
16:36 - 16:41In fact, when people are born,
no one knows how to give up. -
16:41 - 16:45We all were born without
the knowledge of giving up. -
16:45 - 16:49But we may have learned it
a little by now. -
16:49 - 16:54There's just one sure-fire method for us
to regain our confidence. -
16:54 - 16:57Try what we have never done.
-
16:57 - 17:01Achieving what you've never done
will give you some confidence. -
17:01 - 17:03So, please try it.
-
17:05 - 17:08But if you try something new,
you might not succeed. -
17:08 - 17:10Watch this video of my experiment.
-
17:10 - 17:11The rocket flew up beautifully.
-
17:11 - 17:12No, it didn't.
-
17:12 - 17:14It went right down.
-
17:14 - 17:15(Laughter)
-
17:15 - 17:16What should we do?
-
17:16 - 17:18Throw away the controller
and run away. -
17:18 - 17:20(Laughter)
-
17:21 - 17:24Nowadays, there really isn't
anyone who runs away -
17:24 - 17:26like you just saw.
-
17:26 - 17:30This video shows
that if you feel you're in danger, -
17:30 - 17:32it is OK to run away.
-
17:32 - 17:33(Laughter)
-
17:33 - 17:37(Applause)
-
17:40 - 17:41Well, my experience tells me
-
17:41 - 17:45that some earnest, gentle and responsible
people die sooner than expected. -
17:45 - 17:47I don't want that to happen.
-
17:47 - 17:48I want everyone to survive.
-
17:48 - 17:49So if you feel unsafe,
-
17:49 - 17:51it is absolutely OK to run away from it.
-
17:51 - 17:53But after that,
-
17:53 - 17:54even if you have failed,
-
17:54 - 17:55run away, and given up,
-
17:55 - 17:57please do not blame yourself.
-
17:57 - 17:58Please do not feel down.
-
17:58 - 18:00You don't have to do that.
-
18:00 - 18:02But in a situation like this,
-
18:02 - 18:04you will feel hurt, sorry,
-
18:04 - 18:06frustrated, sad, and ashamed.
-
18:06 - 18:08The surge of emotions can be scary.
-
18:08 - 18:11But when you feel those complex emotions,
-
18:11 - 18:13just say, "I am growing right now!"
-
18:13 - 18:16Then, you'll be able to leave
something behind you. -
18:16 - 18:19By all means, please try saying that.
-
18:19 - 18:20We only get one life.
-
18:20 - 18:24We live only one life, without rehearsal.
-
18:24 - 18:26Then, what were we born for?
-
18:27 - 18:29Think of it this way.
-
18:29 - 18:31Failure is a stepping stone to success.
-
18:31 - 18:34Because we are on the stage
with no rehearsal, it's natural to fail. -
18:34 - 18:37I hope that you consider failures
as data to learn from -
18:37 - 18:38and get over it.
-
18:38 - 18:42Moreover, we weren't born
to be helped or to give up. -
18:42 - 18:44We were not born for such things.
-
18:44 - 18:47We were born to save the world.
-
18:47 - 18:49Saving the world is easy.
-
18:49 - 18:54If all the people who make up the world
just stop looking down on themselves, -
18:54 - 18:55the world will be saved.
-
18:55 - 18:59This is the way to save the world
that each one of us can start on now. -
18:59 - 19:01So, please start saving the world.
-
19:01 - 19:03Don't think like "I'm no good."
-
19:03 - 19:05What we should do from this day forth
-
19:05 - 19:07is not to look for the reason
why we cannot do it. -
19:07 - 19:10Instead, think and find the reason
why we can do it. -
19:10 - 19:13Just following that rule will directly
make the world better. -
19:13 - 19:15My long story is going to be over soon.
-
19:15 - 19:18I've loved airplanes and rockets
since I was little. -
19:18 - 19:20But people with no experience
told me many times, -
19:20 - 19:22"Your dream can't be possible."
-
19:22 - 19:24However, my mother told me
that "hope invites." -
19:24 - 19:26I didn't stop hoping,
which made my dream possible. -
19:26 - 19:29So, I'm sure that
not to lose hope is important. -
19:29 - 19:30Before I finish my story,
-
19:30 - 19:33I'd like to give you one phrase
that will help your dream come true. -
19:34 - 19:37It is, "Try this way instead,
and your dream will come true." -
19:37 - 19:40Imagine that you are talking
to someone about your dream. -
19:40 - 19:42If the person says, "That's impossible,"
-
19:42 - 19:43you'll lose spirit.
-
19:43 - 19:45But if you are told,
"Try this way instead. -
19:45 - 19:48I saw a book that can be helpful,"
-
19:48 - 19:51or "I've seen a TV show
that may inspire you," -
19:51 - 19:52it'll cheer you up more.
-
19:52 - 19:54It'll be definitely more fun.
-
19:54 - 19:56So if you talk about dreams with somebody
-
19:56 - 19:58and say to each other,
"Try this way instead," -
19:58 - 20:00everyone's dream will come true.
-
20:00 - 20:02Everyone will become famous.
-
20:02 - 20:03How wonderful, isn't it?
-
20:03 - 20:07I hope the phrase "Try this way instead"
will spread throughout the world. -
20:07 - 20:10And then, I believe that
"It's impossible, anyway" will disappear. -
20:10 - 20:13Let's spread the phrase
"Try this way, instead" by all means. -
20:13 - 20:16Perhaps, it might be
the meaning of meeting you today. -
20:16 - 20:18So I'd like us to help each other.
-
20:18 - 20:21I'll continue to do my very best, too.
-
20:21 - 20:23Because you and I shared
a valuable time together, -
20:23 - 20:25I hope our friendship will last.
-
20:25 - 20:27Thank you very much.
-
20:27 - 20:31(Applause)
-
20:31 - 20:32Thank you.
- Title:
- Hope invites | Tsutomu Uematsu | TEDxSapporo
- Description:
-
Tsutomu Uematsu, who runs a factory in Hokkaido, hopes that people will stop using the phrase ʺIt’s impossible, anyway,ʺ which easily takes away dreams and opportunities from people. Guided by another credo from his childhood, "hope invites," he recalls his path to achieving his long-lost dream of working in space engineering, and argues that we can all start helping to save the world if we just stop convincing one another that our dreams cannot be accomplished.
