Opposition to Stalinism within the Communist Left

  • 0:00 - 0:02
There were some in the party
  • 0:02 - 0:07
    who argued against
some of the tactics that were used.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    A lot of people
will look back on it and say,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
"Oh, look! They were more democratic,
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    they were against Stalinism."
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    And Trotsky argued
    that he was against Stalinism.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    However, on their own platform
    that they put forward
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    as what they would do
if they were to take power,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
did they really differ in a way
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    that would have produced
    different results?
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    Or were they only arguing
against the results that they saw,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    the outcome of the policies?
  • 0:36 - 0:39
And the actual policies that they had
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    wouldn't have differed
    in a meaningful way.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    There's a book called
    "The Russian Communist Left,"
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    it's a collection of essays.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    The author writes,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
"At every step in its degeneration," -
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    the degeneration into Stalinism -
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    "voices were raised
    inside the party in protest."
  • 0:55 - 0:58
But I wonder whether the policies,
  • 0:58 - 1:04
that were agreed upon between Stalin
and the Communist Left of the party,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    weren't the ones that actually
    led to those results
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    that they were protesting against.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
