DIY Plush Bear Phone Case | Make Thrift Buy #23

  • 0:03 - 0:08
Hello, welcome to episode number #23 of Make
Thrift Buy, a show where you send me clothes
  • 0:08 - 0:13
or accessories that you've found on the internet,
and I try my best to recreate them. Today's
  • 0:13 - 0:19
challenge was suggested by Nekorit cx, who
wanted me to try and recreate this iPhone
  • 0:19 - 0:25
case. Now I do personally think that this
accessory is - ridiculous - but on this shop,
  • 0:25 - 0:30
Velvet Caviar, it does retail for $43, and
I'm pretty sure that I can recreate this for
  • 0:30 - 0:34
a lot cheaper. So, challenge accepted! Let's
    begin.
  • 0:34 - 0:39
I started by thrifting myself a teddy bear.
This guy was $1 from the thrift shop, and
  • 0:39 - 0:43
although it looked pretty clean, I still gave
it a quick wash after I bought it.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
So I know that the case in the original is
actually a Rilakkuma bear, but if I was going
  • 0:47 - 0:51
out and buying a Rilakkuma bear for new – that
would kinda of defeat the purpose of this
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    series.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
So, I’m working with what I was able to
    thrift.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
Now I did buy one thing for new – and that
was this plain, stiff iPhone case that I found
  • 0:59 - 1:00
at the dollar store for $2.
  • 1:00 - 1:06
For this project I also needed craft glue,
scissors, a needle and thread, and some kind
  • 1:06 - 1:11
of thick material. I’m using PVC, but you
could also use canvas or denim. You will also
  • 1:11 - 1:17
need one stone cold, evil heart that makes
you totally okay with cutting up a cute teddy bear.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
So, it’s time to cut up the bear!
  • 1:19 - 1:23
I flipped the bear over onto its front and
found the seam in the middle of it’s back.
  • 1:23 - 1:28
I then cut up this seam.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
I then removed a bunch of stuffing to make
the bear a bit thinner, and to make room for
  • 1:32 - 1:34
the phone case to sit in.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
So then I cut this slit to the same length
    as the iphone case.
  • 1:44 - 1:49
And then I made equal-sized 4 cuts at the
top and bottom of the slit, like this, so
  • 1:49 - 1:55
that when I fold back the excess fabric, this
hole is going to be the same size as the phone case.
  • 1:55 - 2:01
Then, with the piece of PVC, I used the case
as a template and I drew around it, adding
  • 2:01 - 2:07
about an extra inch on each side. I then cut
out this piece of PVC, and then I kind of…
  • 2:07 - 2:12
just jammed it into the back of my bear like
    this.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
I folded these side flaps over the side of
the PVC material, and then, with my needle
  • 2:16 - 2:22
and thread, I sewed the PVC into the bear,
attaching it to the bear’s… skin(?)
  • 2:22 - 2:26
I also realized too late that this process
would have been a lot easier if I had cut
  • 2:26 - 2:30
away small corners of the PVC like this before
    inserting it.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
But, I’d already sewed half of it in, so
I kept sewing, and it seemed to work out alright anyway.
  • 2:35 - 2:40
Then, I grabbed my craft glue. I squeezed
the glue all over the PVC lining that I’ve
  • 2:40 - 2:46
made, and onto the back of the phone case.
Then I placed the phone case into the bear
  • 2:46 - 2:51
on top of the piece of PVC, hoped for the
best, and I also waited about an hour for
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    it to dry.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    So, that’s it!
  • 2:57 - 3:14
    [music plays]
  • 3:14 - 3:24
Okay, so I have to admit that... I kinda like
it. It's just SO ridiculous that it's become
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    kind of fantastic.
I mean, calling people is now a lot more fun:
  • 3:28 - 3:32
"Hey, it's me. So if I sound a little bit
muffled, it's just because I have a bear butt
  • 3:32 - 3:36
in my face. Yeah yeah - a bear butt. In my
    face. Y'know.
  • 3:36 - 3:42
    ...Hello?"
And it still works like... fine. I can still
  • 3:42 - 3:46
text off it, scroll instagram, and while the
    back camera doesn't work - coz there's a bear...
  • 3:46 - 3:57
in the way... the front camera still works!
So, you can still take selfies.
  • 3:57 - 4:03
So although I was not expecting this, I would
actually call this Make Thrift Buy a complete success.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
Actually - just before we get too enthusiastic
here, just hold up a sec.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
I kinda changed my mind about the whole "liking
this phone case" thing when I took it outside
  • 4:13 - 4:19
my apartment, and out into public.
    I looked ENTIRELY nuts.
  • 4:19 - 4:24
And everytime I took my phone out of my bag,
I got very very embarrassed, probably because
  • 4:24 - 4:29
a lot of people stared at me while I did it.
    So... yeah.
  • 4:29 - 4:36
So that's it for today's episode, please don't
forget to keep sending me in suggestions for
  • 4:36 - 4:40
new challenges to try out on Make Thrift Buy
    - I don't mind ridiculous suggestions, in
  • 4:40 - 4:45
fact sometimes the more ridiculous, the better!
And I'll see you all for my next video. Bye!
