WEBVTT 00:00:03.210 --> 00:00:08.320 Hello, welcome to episode number #23 of Make Thrift Buy, a show where you send me clothes 00:00:08.320 --> 00:00:13.340 or accessories that you've found on the internet, and I try my best to recreate them. Today's 00:00:13.340 --> 00:00:18.869 challenge was suggested by Nekorit cx, who wanted me to try and recreate this iPhone 00:00:18.869 --> 00:00:24.919 case. Now I do personally think that this accessory is - ridiculous - but on this shop, 00:00:24.919 --> 00:00:30.460 Velvet Caviar, it does retail for $43, and I'm pretty sure that I can recreate this for 00:00:30.460 --> 00:00:34.010 a lot cheaper. So, challenge accepted! Let's begin. 00:00:34.010 --> 00:00:39.010 I started by thrifting myself a teddy bear. This guy was $1 from the thrift shop, and 00:00:39.010 --> 00:00:42.750 although it looked pretty clean, I still gave it a quick wash after I bought it. 00:00:42.750 --> 00:00:46.870 So I know that the case in the original is actually a Rilakkuma bear, but if I was going 00:00:46.870 --> 00:00:50.850 out and buying a Rilakkuma bear for new – that would kinda of defeat the purpose of this 00:00:50.850 --> 00:00:52.020 series. 00:00:52.030 --> 00:00:54.699 So, I’m working with what I was able to thrift. 00:00:54.699 --> 00:00:58.960 Now I did buy one thing for new – and that was this plain, stiff iPhone case that I found 00:00:58.960 --> 00:01:00.420 at the dollar store for $2. 00:01:00.420 --> 00:01:05.780 For this project I also needed craft glue, scissors, a needle and thread, and some kind 00:01:05.780 --> 00:01:10.640 of thick material. I’m using PVC, but you could also use canvas or denim. You will also 00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:16.549 need one stone cold, evil heart that makes you totally okay with cutting up a cute teddy bear. 00:01:16.549 --> 00:01:19.140 So, it’s time to cut up the bear! 00:01:19.140 --> 00:01:23.250 I flipped the bear over onto its front and found the seam in the middle of it’s back. 00:01:23.250 --> 00:01:28.049 I then cut up this seam. 00:01:28.049 --> 00:01:31.869 I then removed a bunch of stuffing to make the bear a bit thinner, and to make room for 00:01:31.869 --> 00:01:33.520 the phone case to sit in. 00:01:33.520 --> 00:01:37.280 So then I cut this slit to the same length as the iphone case. 00:01:44.479 --> 00:01:49.329 And then I made equal-sized 4 cuts at the top and bottom of the slit, like this, so 00:01:49.329 --> 00:01:55.240 that when I fold back the excess fabric, this hole is going to be the same size as the phone case. 00:01:55.240 --> 00:02:01.280 Then, with the piece of PVC, I used the case as a template and I drew around it, adding 00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:07.369 about an extra inch on each side. I then cut out this piece of PVC, and then I kind of… 00:02:07.369 --> 00:02:11.550 just jammed it into the back of my bear like this. 00:02:11.550 --> 00:02:16.330 I folded these side flaps over the side of the PVC material, and then, with my needle 00:02:16.330 --> 00:02:21.870 and thread, I sewed the PVC into the bear, attaching it to the bear’s… skin(?) 00:02:21.870 --> 00:02:26.420 I also realized too late that this process would have been a lot easier if I had cut 00:02:26.420 --> 00:02:29.900 away small corners of the PVC like this before inserting it. 00:02:29.900 --> 00:02:35.160 But, I’d already sewed half of it in, so I kept sewing, and it seemed to work out alright anyway. 00:02:35.160 --> 00:02:40.240 Then, I grabbed my craft glue. I squeezed the glue all over the PVC lining that I’ve 00:02:40.250 --> 00:02:45.940 made, and onto the back of the phone case. Then I placed the phone case into the bear 00:02:45.940 --> 00:02:50.980 on top of the piece of PVC, hoped for the best, and I also waited about an hour for 00:02:50.980 --> 00:02:54.080 it to dry. 00:02:54.080 --> 00:02:55.100 So, that’s it! 00:02:57.280 --> 00:03:13.920 [music plays] 00:03:14.500 --> 00:03:23.500 Okay, so I have to admit that... I kinda like it. It's just SO ridiculous that it's become 00:03:23.510 --> 00:03:27.970 kind of fantastic. I mean, calling people is now a lot more fun: 00:03:27.970 --> 00:03:31.550 "Hey, it's me. So if I sound a little bit muffled, it's just because I have a bear butt 00:03:31.550 --> 00:03:36.400 in my face. Yeah yeah - a bear butt. In my face. Y'know. 00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:41.560 ...Hello?" And it still works like... fine. I can still 00:03:41.560 --> 00:03:46.300 text off it, scroll instagram, and while the back camera doesn't work - coz there's a bear... 00:03:46.300 --> 00:03:56.710 in the way... the front camera still works! So, you can still take selfies. 00:03:56.710 --> 00:04:02.880 So although I was not expecting this, I would actually call this Make Thrift Buy a complete success. 00:04:03.780 --> 00:04:07.860 Actually - just before we get too enthusiastic here, just hold up a sec. 00:04:07.860 --> 00:04:13.320 I kinda changed my mind about the whole "liking this phone case" thing when I took it outside 00:04:13.320 --> 00:04:19.319 my apartment, and out into public. I looked ENTIRELY nuts. 00:04:19.319 --> 00:04:24.460 And everytime I took my phone out of my bag, I got very very embarrassed, probably because 00:04:24.460 --> 00:04:29.150 a lot of people stared at me while I did it. So... yeah. 00:04:29.150 --> 00:04:36.000 So that's it for today's episode, please don't forget to keep sending me in suggestions for 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:40.199 new challenges to try out on Make Thrift Buy - I don't mind ridiculous suggestions, in 00:04:40.199 --> 00:04:44.659 fact sometimes the more ridiculous, the better! And I'll see you all for my next video. Bye!
