-
Not Synced When I opened Mott Hall
 Bridges Academy in 2010,

-
Not Synced my goal was simple:
-
Not Synced open a school to close a prison.
-
Not Synced Now to some,
-
Not Synced this was an audacious goal
-
Not Synced because our school is located
in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn,

-
Not Synced one of the most underserved and violent
neighborhoods in all of New York City.

-
Not Synced Like many urban schools
 with high poverty rates,

-
Not Synced we face numerous challenges,
-
Not Synced like finding teachers who can empathize

-
Not Synced with the complexities
 of a disadvantaged community,

-
Not Synced lack of funding for technology,
-
Not Synced low parental involvement
-
Not Synced and neighborhood gangs that recruit
children as early as fourth grade.

-
Not Synced So here I was.
-
Not Synced The founding principle of a middle school
-
Not Synced that was a district public school,
-
Not Synced and I only had 45 kids to start.
-
Not Synced 30 percent of them had special needs,
-
Not Synced 86 percent of them were below
grade level in English and in Math

-
Not Synced and 100 percent living
 below the poverty level.

-
Not Synced If our children are not in our classrooms,
-
Not Synced how will they learn?
-
Not Synced And if they're not learning,
-
Not Synced where would they end up?
-
Not Synced It was evident when I would
 as my 13-year-olds,

-
Not Synced "Young man,
-
Not Synced where do you see yourself in five years?"
-
Not Synced And his response,
-
Not Synced "I don't know if I'm
 gonna live that long."

-
Not Synced Or to have a young woman say to me
-
Not Synced that she had a life-long goal
 of working in a fast-food restaurant --

-
Not Synced to me this was unacceptable.
-
Not Synced It was also evident that they had no idea
-
Not Synced that there was a landscape of opportunity
-
Not Synced that existed beyond their neighborhood.
-
Not Synced We call our students scholars
 because they're life-long learners.

-
Not Synced And the skills that they learn today
-
Not Synced will prepare them for college
 and career readiness.

-
Not Synced I chose the royal colors
 of purple and black,

-
Not Synced because I want them to be reminded
that they are descendants of greatness,

-
Not Synced and that through education,
-
Not Synced they are future engineers,
-
Not Synced scientists,
-
Not Synced enterpreneurs
-
Not Synced and even leaders who can
and will take over this world.

-
Not Synced To date,
-
Not Synced we have had three graduating classes
-
Not Synced at at 98 --
-
Not Synced (Applause)
-
Not Synced At a 98 percent graduation rate.
-
Not Synced This is nearly 200 children
-
Not Synced who are now going to some of the most
competitive high schools in New York City.

-
Not Synced (Applause)
-
Not Synced It was a cold day in January
-
Not Synced when my scholar Vidal Chastanet
 met Brandon Stanton,

-
Not Synced the founder of the popular blog
 HUmans of New York.

-
Not Synced Brandon shared the story
of a young man from Brownsville

-
Not Synced who had witnessed violence firsthand,
-
Not Synced by witnessing a man
being thrown off of a roof.

-
Not Synced Yet he can still be
 influenced by a principle

-
Not Synced who had opened up a school
 that believes in all children.

-
Not Synced Vidal embodies the story of so many
 of our underprivileged children

-
Not Synced who are struggling to survive,
-
Not Synced which is why we must
 make education a priority.

-
Not Synced Brandon's post created a global sensation
that touched the lives of millions.

-
Not Synced This resulted in 1.4 million
 dollars being raised

-
Not Synced for our scholars to attend field trips
 to colleges and universities,

-
Not Synced [Sommerstein programs],
-
Not Synced as well as college scholarships.
-
Not Synced You need to understand
-
Not Synced that when 200 young people
 from Brownsville visited Harvard,

-
Not Synced they now understood that a college
of their choice was a real possibility,

-
Not Synced and the impossibility that had
 beenimposed upon them

-
Not Synced by a disadvantaged community
-
Not Synced was replaced by hope and purpose.
-
Not Synced The revolution in education
 is happening in our schools,

-
Not Synced with adults who provide love,
 structure, support and knowledge.

-
Not Synced These are the things
 that inspire children,

-
Not Synced but it is not an easy task
-
Not Synced and there are high demands
-
Not Synced within an education system
 that is not perfect,

-
Not Synced but I have a dynamic group of educators
-
Not Synced who collaborate as a team
-
Not Synced to determine what is the best curriculum,
-
Not Synced and they take time beyond their school day
-
Not Synced and come in on weekends
-
Not Synced and even use their own money
-
Not Synced to often provide resources
when we do not have it.

-
Not Synced And as the principle,
-
Not Synced I have to inspect what I expect.
-
Not Synced So I show up in classes
-
Not Synced and I conduct observations
 to give feedback,

-
Not Synced because I want my teachers
 to be just as successful

-
Not Synced as the name Mott Hall Bridges Academy.
-
Not Synced And I give them access to me
 every single day,

-
Not Synced which is why they all have
 my personal cell number,

-
Not Synced including my scholars
 and those who graduated --

-
Not Synced which is probably why I get
 phone calls and text messages

-
Not Synced at three o'clock in the morning --
-
Not Synced (Laughter)
-
Not Synced But we are all connected to succeed,
-
Not Synced and good leaders do this.
-
Not Synced Tomorrow's future is sitting
 in our classrooms.

-
Not Synced And they are our responsibility.
-
Not Synced That means everyone in here
and those who are watching the screen.

-
Not Synced We must believe in their brilliance
-
Not Synced and remind them by teaching them
-
Not Synced that there indeed is power in education.
-
Not Synced Thank you.
-
Not Synced (Applause)
