The Sikh New Year | Chet | The Barah Maha Series - #1

  • 0:15 - 0:19
    Congratulations to everyone
on celebrating the Sikh new year.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
The Sikh new year falls on
Sangrand of the month of Chet.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
The first day of the first month
    in the Sikh calendar
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    which is Chet.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
In this video we are going to be
    looking at the Pauree
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    of the Chet month
in the Bani of Barah Maha
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    by Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
Guru Arjan Dev Ji is going to guide us
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    and give us teachings
    for this month of Chet.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
At the end of this video
I will be sharing three things
  • 0:48 - 0:51
that we need to do in this month.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
Guru Arjan Dev Ji starts off
    the Pauree by saying
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    Chet Govind Araadheeae
    Hovae Anand Ghana
  • 1:02 - 1:05
Everybody in this world seeks peace,
  • 1:05 - 1:09
Anand, the state of bliss, of Sukh.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
    Even in English calendar
    in the month of January
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    when a new year comes
  • 1:16 - 1:20
we all have our new year resolution
  • 1:20 - 1:23
and one of that is always
    seeking for happiness.
  • 1:23 - 1:30
    Guru Arjan Dev Ji says
that for us to seek for that Sukh,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    that Anand, the permenant Sukh
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    is through Araadhana,
    is through Naam Simran,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    meditation on Parmatama.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    We might ask this question
  • 1:41 - 1:47
that Sache Paatshah, where can we get
    inspiration and that guidance
  • 1:47 - 1:50
or directions to do Naam Simran?
  • 1:50 - 1:53
Also to ensure continuity when we do it?
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    Guru Sahib then continues
    in the next Pankti,
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    They say,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
It is through the sangat of the Saints,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    the Mahapurakhs, the Gurmukhs
  • 2:07 - 2:11
that we are inspired to do Naam Simran,
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    we are blessed and guided
    to do Naam Simran.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    Sangat ji, especially walking
on the path of Sikhi as a new person
  • 2:20 - 2:24
it is very important to get that
    inspiration and that guidance.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
Just like someone in this world
  • 2:27 - 2:28
who seeks to become a doctor
  • 2:28 - 2:31
or a businessman or a business woman,
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    what do we do?
  • 2:32 - 2:35
We read the life story, the biography,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
we watch videos of the person
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    who is a successful doctor
    or a successful business person.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    Then being inspired by them
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    we also try to walk
on the same path as well.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    It is the same thing
    here as well Sangat ji.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    Seeking for that inspiration
    and guidance from the saints.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    Raja Shiv Nabh
during the time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji,
  • 2:57 - 3:01
he was the king of Sangladeep
which is now modern Sri Lanka.
  • 3:02 - 3:08
    Raja Shiv Nabh got inspiration
to do Naam Simran from Bhai Mansukh Ji
  • 3:08 - 3:12
who has done Sangat of Guru Nanak Dev Ji,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    who has learned so much
    from Guru Nanak Dev Ji
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    and was doing Bhagti
from the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
Raja Shi Nabh listened to the
Saakhiyaan of Guru Nanak Dev Ji,
  • 3:22 - 3:26
was so inspired that he too
    started doing Naam Simran
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    he too started remembering
    Guru Nanak Dev Ji
  • 3:30 - 3:34
and one day the time came
    when through that remembrance,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    through that Araadhana
    Guru Sahib Themselves
  • 3:37 - 3:41
    came to Sangladepp to bless
Raja Shiv Nabh with Their darshan.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
Guru Ji says in the next Pankti,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
That those who have found Parmatama
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    those saints, those Gurmukhs
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    who have through Naam Simran
    found Parmatama,
  • 4:01 - 4:07
    their coming into this world
    is fortunate, is fruitful.
  • 4:07 - 4:11
    Guru Sahib says that
this too can be our situation as well.
  • 4:11 - 4:16
    Where through Naam Simran,
    through meditation, Bhagti
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    we also can find Parmatama
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    and our coming into this
    world will also become fruitful.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    Remember what Guru Sahib says
  • 4:30 - 4:33
That we have come here to gain a profit.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    Profit of what?
  • 4:34 - 4:37
Through Naam Simran, union with Vaheguru.
  • 4:41 - 4:45
    In the next two Panktiaan
Guru Sahib is giving us advice
  • 4:45 - 4:49
    on after getting inspiration
and guidance to do Naam Simran
  • 4:49 - 4:51
how should we be doing Naam Simran.
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    Guru Sahib says,
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    That even for a moment,
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    Khin here means the moment
taken for a blink of an eye.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    It is so instant,
  • 5:05 - 5:09
Guru Sahib says even for an instant
    if we forget Parmatama,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
we do not remember Vaheguru Ji
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    then that moment,
that breath that we have taken
  • 5:14 - 5:19
    has become useless,
our life has become useless infact.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
    Then we ask this question
    again to Sache Paatshah that
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    Vaheguru Ji, Sache Paatshah,
  • 5:27 - 5:30
Guru Sahib, You have guided us,
  • 5:30 - 5:32
You have told us to do Kirat Kamaaee,
  • 5:32 - 5:34
to live in a Griht Jeevan
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    and in this world
we have our families to take care,
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    we have to earn money,
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    we have to provide education
  • 5:44 - 5:45
we have to go to work.
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    There are so many things
    that we have to do.
  • 5:48 - 5:53
How is it that through all of this
we can still do Your Naam Simran?
  • 5:57 - 6:00
Guru Sahib then says in the next Pankti,
    They say,
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    Understand this, know this
    and realise this
  • 6:07 - 6:12
that Parmatama, Akaal Purakh is where?
  • 6:12 - 6:15
Is not just somewhere in space
  • 6:15 - 6:19
or in Heaven that the world has made such.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
Guru Sahib is saying that Parmatama
  • 6:22 - 6:25
is in the Jal - in the water,
  • 6:25 - 6:26
in the Thal - in the Earth,
  • 6:26 - 6:29
in the space - in the Sky
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    everywhere
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    is even in the jungles,
  • 6:35 - 6:38
even in the blade of grass that we see.
  • 6:38 - 6:45
    Parmatama is basically in every
core of every single atom, cell
  • 6:45 - 6:48
** that we can see and
we cannot see in this world as well.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
Sangat Ji, to be able to come this state
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    where we can remember Parmatama
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    through everything we see
    with our physical eyes
  • 6:58 - 7:01
it really requires us to be conscious,
  • 7:01 - 7:03
to be in the present moment.
  • 7:04 - 7:05
    Think about it.
  • 7:05 - 7:08
The Araadhana, the Simran of Akaal
  • 7:09 - 7:13
can only be done in the present moment.
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    Because past is gone
and the future no one knows.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
So all we have is this present moment
  • 7:21 - 7:24
which we have to be very conscious about.
  • 7:24 - 7:28
    Once we are conscious and
    aware about our surrounding,
  • 7:28 - 7:29
about the people we are with
  • 7:30 - 7:34
and we are so aware that
Sache Paatshah You are in the air,
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    You are in the Pani,
    You are in this building
  • 7:37 - 7:40
I can even hear You from
the sound of the traffic life
  • 7:40 - 7:43
from the sound of the rain,
    the river flowing.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    Every moment then we are
    constantly reminded
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    to say Vaheguru Vaheguru.
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    We are in that awe,
  • 7:50 - 7:54
we are in that state of Vismaad
where we constantly just say Vah
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    and we remember Vaheguru then.
  • 7:57 - 7:57
    Gurbani says,
  • 8:00 - 8:04
That the creator is within the creation
  • 8:04 - 8:06
and the creation is within the creator.
  • 8:06 - 8:12
So it is basically us having
    the eyes to see that.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
It is human nature Sangat ji,
  • 8:15 - 8:19
that we only believe what we see
    with these physical eyes.
  • 8:20 - 8:24
When we look at a glass of milk,
    all we see is milk
  • 8:24 - 8:30
but we cannot see the ghee in that milk.
  • 8:30 - 8:33
We cannot taste it, we cannot feel it,
  • 8:33 - 8:35
    we cannot smell it.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
But we cannot deny the fact as well
  • 8:37 - 8:40
that from this milk that ghee is produced.
  • 8:40 - 8:42
So what do we need to do?
  • 8:42 - 8:44
We churn the milk, we put so much effort,
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    so much time and energy
  • 8:46 - 8:50
and then finally from the milk
    we get ghee.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    Similarly Sangat ji,
  • 8:53 - 8:56
what we see with these eyes given to us
  • 8:57 - 8:59
is the creation of Akaal Purakh
  • 9:00 - 9:03
but it will take a lot of effort,
  • 9:03 - 9:05
    a lot of Naam Simran,
  • 9:05 - 9:09
    Araadhana, meditation and
    constant reminder,
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    being conscious and being
    in the present moment,
  • 9:12 - 9:17
for us to see and realise
    that the essence,
  • 9:18 - 9:22
    the core of every being
    in this world is Parmatama.
  • 9:23 - 9:27
Just because we cannot see that
    Nirgun Saroop Parmatama
  • 9:27 - 9:31
we cannot deny the fact that
    They are everywhere.
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    Gurbani says,
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    So that is the state
    of all these Gurmukhs,
  • 9:39 - 9:42
all the saints who have done
    so much of Naam Simran
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    that where ever they look,
  • 9:44 - 9:46
who ever they see, where ever they go
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    they only can experience Parmatama.
  • 9:53 - 9:57
Through this message Guru Arjan Dev Ji
    then says and tells us
  • 9:57 - 10:00
    that there are two types
    of people in this world.
  • 10:00 - 10:04
    One who do Simran and
one who do not do Simran.
  • 10:04 - 10:07
The first type of people Guru Sahib says,
  • 10:11 - 10:13
Those who do not do Naam Simran,
  • 10:13 - 10:14
    who do not remember Parmatama
  • 10:14 - 10:17
they go through so much of pain,
  • 10:17 - 10:18
    so much of Dukh.
  • 10:19 - 10:23
Even though we might say that
    this person is wealthy,
  • 10:23 - 10:26
    his life is amazing
  • 10:26 - 10:29
but again, that is what we see
    with these physical eyes.
  • 10:29 - 10:32
We do not know what is going
    through the person's mind.
  • 10:32 - 10:34
Maybe that person is going through Dukh.
  • 10:35 - 10:37
    Bhai Randhir Singh Ji says,
  • 10:37 - 10:39
    they share their Sakhi in their book;
  • 10:39 - 10:41
they say that they had one cousin
  • 10:42 - 10:46
and his whole life his cousin
    has not done any Bhagti
  • 10:46 - 10:49
and when his time of death came,
  • 10:49 - 10:51
he was on his death bed,
  • 10:51 - 10:54
and he was struggling, he was in pain
  • 10:54 - 10:58
because he had that fear of death,
    the fear of Jamdoots
  • 10:58 - 11:02
    who were circling around him,
    pulling him and torturing him
  • 11:03 - 11:05
and it was only through reading Gurbani
  • 11:05 - 11:08
    and doing Simran with him
    that he felt at peace.
  • 11:08 - 11:11
and that is how he left this wold.
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    The second type of people
    Guru Arjan Dev Ji says
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    those who could do Simran.
  • 11:16 - 11:17
    Guru Sahib says,
  • 11:21 - 11:24
That those who have enjoyed Parmatama,
  • 11:24 - 11:28
    those who have found Parmatama
    through Naam Simran
  • 11:29 - 11:32
    they are so fortunate,
    they are so blessed.
  • 11:33 - 11:37
    Even though they might go
    through so much of pain,
  • 11:37 - 11:40
Bhai Mati Daas Ji, Bhai Dayaala Ji,
    Bhai Taru Singh Ji,
  • 11:41 - 11:43
they went through so much of physical pain
  • 11:43 - 11:46
    but they were still that
    state of Chardikala,
  • 11:46 - 11:47
in the state of high spirit.
  • 11:48 - 11:51
They were not bothered by the pain
    that they were going through
  • 11:51 - 11:54
    because they were already
    in the state of Anand,
  • 11:54 - 11:55
    in the state of bliss.
  • 11:56 - 11:57
    Gurbani says,
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    That the Bhagats,
    the Gurmukhs are so blessed
  • 12:08 - 12:09
who recite the Name of Parmatama
  • 12:09 - 12:11
with their mouth, with their tongue.
  • 12:16 - 12:20
In the end of this Pauree
Guru Arjan Dev Ji does this benti
  • 12:20 - 12:20
    They say,
  • 12:29 - 12:33
Guru Sahib tells us, and this is the
Ardaas that we should do as well
  • 12:33 - 12:37
    that I am so thirsty,
I am yearning to have Your Darshan
  • 12:38 - 12:42
and in this month of Chet
    I will touch the feet
  • 12:42 - 12:43
I will bow down to them,
  • 12:43 - 12:45
I will kiss the feet of those
  • 12:45 - 12:47
    who untie me with You
  • 12:47 - 12:51
who guide me to do Your Naam Simran,
    to remember You
  • 12:51 - 12:54
    and eventually unite me
    with You Parmatama.
  • 12:56 - 12:59
Just like when we feel hungry Sangat Ji,
  • 12:59 - 13:00
    when we feel thirsty
  • 13:00 - 13:04
and someone comes and gives us pani,
    gives us food
  • 13:04 - 13:10
at that point we are filled
with the sense of gratitude to Parmatama,
  • 13:10 - 13:13
and to the person who has
    brought us food and pani.
  • 13:14 - 13:18
Just like food and water is necessary
    for this physical body
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    similarly, for the spiritual body,
    the aatama
  • 13:23 - 13:28
    Naam Simran and Gurbani
is the khuraakh - the food for the aatama
  • 13:28 - 13:30
and is equally important as well.
  • 13:35 - 13:38
So Sangat ji, coming to en end
  • 13:38 - 13:41
    what are the three things
that we need to do in this month of Chet?
  • 13:41 - 13:47
The first thing we need to do is
start doing Ardaas to Parmatama everyday
  • 13:47 - 13:51
to please bless us with the true Sangat,
  • 13:51 - 13:53
with the right Sangat that will guide us,
  • 13:53 - 13:56
and inspire us to do Naam Simran,
  • 13:57 - 13:58
    to read Gurbani,
  • 13:58 - 14:01
to walk on the path towards Vaheguru Ji.
  • 14:01 - 14:04
The second thing we need to do
  • 14:04 - 14:08
is that along side our Ardaas
we need to put in effort as well.
  • 14:09 - 14:15
    Watch videos, Kathas,
    listen to Kathas about Sangat,
  • 14:15 - 14:18
    about what is true Sangat,
    where do we find Sangat?
  • 14:18 - 14:20
    There are so many Saakhiyan
    in our Itihaas
  • 14:20 - 14:22
    that speak about Sangat.
  • 14:22 - 14:28
Infact Sangat ji, let's start reading
    the life stories, the biographies
  • 14:28 - 14:30
of all the saint and the Gurmukhs
  • 14:31 - 14:34
    who through Naam Simran
    have found Parmatama.
  • 14:34 - 14:38
We have so many of these Gursikhs
    and all these resources,
  • 14:38 - 14:41
    Maharaj di Kirpa de naal
    it is available to us.
  • 14:41 - 14:44
All we have to do is
put that effort and read them.
  • 14:45 - 14:48
    We have life story of
    Bhai Randhir Singh Ji,
  • 14:48 - 14:52
Bhai Rama Singh Ji, Baba Anand Singh Ji,
    Baba Harnaam Singh Ji,
  • 14:52 - 14:55
    Sant Giyaani Gurbachan Singh Ji
    and many many more.
  • 14:56 - 14:59
    They are even available
both in Punjabi and in English as well.
  • 14:59 - 15:03
    Physical books, audio books, PDF.
  • 15:03 - 15:06
    So reading them and getting
    inspiration from their life
  • 15:07 - 15:09
will really help us to walk
    on their path as well.
  • 15:10 - 15:12
    The third thing
we need to do in this month
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    is reflect on our surrounding,
  • 15:15 - 15:18
our environment and our own Sangat.
  • 15:18 - 15:20
    Ask ourelf this question,
  • 15:20 - 15:22
the Sangat that I am in right now,
  • 15:22 - 15:24
    is it guiding me,
  • 15:24 - 15:28
    is it inspiring me
    to do Naam Simran,
  • 15:28 - 15:30
to walk on the path towards Vaheguru
  • 15:31 - 15:34
or is it taking me away from that path?
  • 15:34 - 15:38
If it is guiding and inspiring you,
it is positive then its good
  • 15:38 - 15:40
but if it is negative Sangat,
  • 15:40 - 15:43
    it is taking you away
    from your very core,
  • 15:43 - 15:45
    your very purpose of life
  • 15:45 - 15:50
    then we need to evaluate
the type of Sangat that we are in
  • 15:50 - 15:52
    and start doing Ardaas
  • 15:52 - 15:54
    and putting in that effort
    to find right Sangat.
  • 15:57 - 16:00
Once you are able to do that
    Sangat ji in this month
  • 16:00 - 16:03
do share with us in the comment below
  • 16:03 - 16:05
    how your journey has been
  • 16:05 - 16:08
    in finding the true Sangat,
    putting in that effort,
  • 16:08 - 16:10
did you go through any challenges
  • 16:10 - 16:13
when you were finding for that Sangat
  • 16:13 - 16:16
or evaluating your current Sangat now?
  • 16:16 - 16:20
    So don't forget to like,
share with your family and friends
  • 16:20 - 16:24
    so that other people too
can get the message of the month of Chet
  • 16:24 - 16:28
    and don't forget to subscribe
    to our channel as well.
  • 16:28 - 16:31
    Forgive me for any mistakes
    that I have made.
