0:00 - 0:05We're told that Linde isn't sure
how to subtract 853... -
0:07 - 0:10We are told Linde isn't sure
-
0:10 - 0:14how to subtract 853 minus 283.
-
0:14 - 0:17Help Linde by choosing an expression
-
0:17 - 0:21that is the same as 853 minus 283.
-
0:22 - 0:24So, pause this video and see
if you can answer it on your own -
0:25 - 0:27before we work through it together.
-
0:27 - 0:29Alright, now that we look
at all the choices, -
0:29 - 0:31they all start with 853.
-
0:31 - 0:35Now, this first choice
they subtract out 200 -
0:35 - 0:37That makes sense
because we have 2 hundreds -
0:37 - 0:39right over there.
-
0:39 - 0:41Then they subtract out 50
-
0:41 - 0:43and then they subtract out 3,
-
0:43 - 0:46So, the 200 and the 3 make sense.
-
0:46 - 0:49You can view 853 minus 283
-
0:49 - 0:54as 853 minus 200,
-
0:55 - 0:58minus 80, 8 tens right here,
-
0:58 - 0:59minus 3.
-
0:59 - 1:01But that's not what they wrote over here.
-
1:01 - 1:03Instead of putting 80 here,
they put a 50. -
1:03 - 1:05So we can rule that out.
-
1:05 - 1:07Here we have 853 minus 20
-
1:07 - 1:09minus 800 minus 3.
-
1:09 - 1:11Well, this is a little bit strange
-
1:11 - 1:14because we don't have 2 tens,
we have 2 hundreds -
1:14 - 1:17and we don't have 8 hundreds,
we have 8 tens, -
1:17 - 1:19so this is also incorrect.
-
1:19 - 1:21Now, it's probably going to be this one,
-
1:21 - 1:24but let's just make sure
we feel comfortable with this. -
1:24 - 1:27So, this one has 853 minus 200,
-
1:27 - 1:29minus 53.
-
1:29 - 1:31minus 30.
-
1:31 - 1:33Does that make sense?
-
1:33 - 1:35Well, let's think about it.
-
1:35 - 1:36What they're doing,
-
1:36 - 1:39is they're subtracting out first the 200,
-
1:39 - 1:41so that this part right over here,
so that makes sense. -
1:41 - 1:43They're subtracting out first that.
-
1:43 - 1:45And then they're subtracting out 53
-
1:45 - 1:47and then subtracting out 30.
-
1:47 - 1:49Well, that is the same thing
-
1:49 - 1:51as subtracting out 83,
-
1:51 - 1:52because subtracting out 83
-
1:52 - 1:54is the same thing
as subtracting out 53 and -
1:54 - 1:56and then subtracting 30.
-
1:56 - 1:5753 plus 30 is 83.
-
1:57 - 1:59Now, you might be wondering
-
1:59 - 2:01why would they even do it this way?
-
2:01 - 2:03What is easier to do in your head?
-
2:03 - 2:07853 minus 200 is 653.
-
2:07 - 2:10You take away 53 from that,
-
2:10 - 2:12so you take away 53 from that,
-
2:12 - 2:15and you're going to be left with 600.
-
2:15 - 2:17And then 600 minus 30
-
2:17 - 2:19— you might recognize that,
-
2:19 - 2:22you could do 60 tens minus 3 tens —
-
2:22 - 2:24it's going to be 57 tens,
-
2:24 - 2:26or you might be able
to do it in your head -
2:26 - 2:28600 minus 30 is 570.
-
2:29 - 2:30So, that's why they broke out,
-
2:30 - 2:32they broke up the 83.
-
2:32 - 2:34Instead of just breaking it up
into 80 and 3, -
2:34 - 2:38they broke it up into 53 and 30
to match this 53 over here. -
2:39 - 2:41It's easier to work out the result.
-
2:41 - 2:43Let's do another example.
-
2:43 - 2:45So, here we're asked to fill in the blank.
-
2:45 - 2:50They say, 143 minus 79
is the same as "blank" minus 80. -
2:50 - 2:53So, pause this video
and see if you can figure this out. -
2:53 - 2:56So, the key here is to realize
-
2:56 - 2:58is, when you have a difference here,
-
2:58 - 3:00as long as you add or subtract
the same amount -
3:00 - 3:01to both of these,
-
3:01 - 3:03the difference will be the same.
-
3:03 - 3:06So, it looks like they tried
to turn 79 into, -
3:06 - 3:10it looks like they turned
the 79 into an 80, -
3:10 - 3:12by adding 1
-
3:12 - 3:14and so if we want the difference
to be the same, -
3:15 - 3:18we would add 1to the 143 as well,
-
3:18 - 3:22So, 143 plus 1 is 144.
-
3:22 - 3:24If we add one to both of these numbers,
-
3:24 - 3:26the difference would be the same.
-
3:26 - 3:27And we're done.
-
3:27 - 3:29So it's 144 minus 80.
