How to become a millionaire in 3 years | Daniel Ally | TEDxBergenCommunityCollege
-
0:05 - 0:07Today I want to talk with you
about a subject -
0:07 - 0:11that many people have been talking
about for a very long time. -
0:11 - 0:14And that subject is called "success."
-
0:14 - 0:18Success means different things
to different people, -
0:18 - 0:23but what is success might mean to me
is different than what it may mean to you. -
0:23 - 0:25And what it may mean to you,
-
0:25 - 0:27is different than what it means
to a kindergartner -
0:27 - 0:31who is just trying to get a star
on his homework assignment. -
0:31 - 0:33Or perhaps to a housewife,
-
0:33 - 0:38who has been trying
to get her five kids in bed be 9pm. -
0:38 - 0:40Or maybe even a corporate executive
-
0:40 - 0:45who's been working for his
or her corporation for 20-plus years, -
0:45 - 0:50and only wants to become
the CEO of their organization. -
0:51 - 0:52As you could tell,
-
0:52 - 0:56we have so many different definitions
of this word success, -
0:56 - 1:01but the greatest definition
I can give you today is this, -
1:01 - 1:05"Success is all about self-expression."
-
1:05 - 1:08It's about being who you want to be,
-
1:08 - 1:09doing what you want to do,
-
1:09 - 1:12going where you want to go.
-
1:12 - 1:14Because when it comes to your life,
-
1:14 - 1:18you are the boss, and you have a choice.
-
1:19 - 1:21In fact, you are who you are today
-
1:21 - 1:26because of all the choices
that you've made in your entire life. -
1:27 - 1:30But as we are growing up
we have a lot of people -
1:30 - 1:33who try to tell us
how to make these choices; -
1:33 - 1:38our parents, our teachers, our bosses,
our friends, even our neighbors. -
1:38 - 1:40They try to tell us how to live our lives,
-
1:40 - 1:42what we should do, where we should go,
-
1:42 - 1:46how we should walk, how we should talk.
-
1:46 - 1:49But my question for you is this,
-
1:49 - 1:52"If you're trying to be
what other people want you to be, -
1:52 - 1:55then who will be you?"
-
1:56 - 2:01So the key to success is to stop
conforming to other people expectations, -
2:01 - 2:05and start performing
to your own level of expectations. -
2:05 - 2:07Is to believe in yourself.
-
2:07 - 2:10Is to know that what you want
will eventually come to fruition, -
2:10 - 2:13as long as you believe it.
-
2:13 - 2:14You see, you have to have faith,
-
2:14 - 2:20and faith is knowing that what you want
will eventually come to fruition -
2:20 - 2:21as long as you believe it.
-
2:21 - 2:23And if you feed your faith,
-
2:23 - 2:27you will find often times
that your fears will starve to death, -
2:27 - 2:30because if you believe in yourself,
-
2:30 - 2:33everyone else in the world
will believe in you. -
2:35 - 2:39Fortunately, for a long time,
I didn't quite believe in myself. -
2:39 - 2:42Actually, I used to be the kind of person
-
2:42 - 2:44that mothers would often
warn their daughters about, -
2:44 - 2:46and fathers would tell their sons,
-
2:46 - 2:48"If you keep doing
what Daniel Ally is doing, -
2:48 - 2:51you are going to end up
where Daniel Ally is going." -
2:51 - 2:54They had some credence
to what they were saying, -
2:54 - 2:55because as you can imagine,
-
2:55 - 2:59your reputation really is
your best advertisement. -
2:59 - 3:01I really didn't have a good reputation,
-
3:01 - 3:04because I was living
so far below my potential, -
3:04 - 3:07I was actually living
in my mother's basement. -
3:09 - 3:13By the age of 21,
I'd worked over 40 different jobs. -
3:13 - 3:16I got fired from more jobs
than more people had. -
3:16 - 3:20In high school,
I graduated second to last, -
3:20 - 3:23the last guy; well, he was in jail.
-
3:23 - 3:27I was on drugs for eight years,
and I was confused. -
3:27 - 3:29I was broke, busted, and disgusted,
-
3:29 - 3:32and I knew that I wanted to change;
-
3:32 - 3:37the only problem was I didn't know how.
-
3:37 - 3:40Can I see a show of hands
if you've ever been in a situation -
3:40 - 3:44where you wanted to change,
but you just didn't know what to do? -
3:45 - 3:47Well, we all have been there,
-
3:47 - 3:49maybe we are there right now.
-
3:49 - 3:53I discovered there are only three ways
that I can make a change in my life. -
3:53 - 3:55Three ideas I wanted
to share with you today -
3:55 - 3:59that can absolutely revolutionize
your life from today. -
4:00 - 4:03I know these steps work
because I've been able to do them myself. -
4:03 - 4:07By the age of 24,
I became a self-made millionaire. -
4:07 - 4:11I have been able to write three books
and travel to dozens of countries. -
4:11 - 4:14I now reach millions
of people with my work. -
4:14 - 4:18I believe that these three key principles
can change your life, -
4:18 - 4:20no matter how do you define success
-
4:20 - 4:23whether you want to live to age 100
or even have a dozen kids, -
4:23 - 4:28or just have a house on the mountaintop
somewhere no one knows about. -
4:28 - 4:33These three key principles will help you
to realize the success in your life. -
4:34 - 4:37The first one is to read more books.
-
4:37 - 4:42All the books in the world can help us
to solve all the problems in the world. -
4:42 - 4:46But the truth is that we don't have
to read all the books in the world, -
4:46 - 4:49because we don't have
all the problems in the world, -
4:49 - 4:54but we do have to read the books
that help us to solve our problems. -
4:54 - 4:56So, for instance, if you wanted
to learn about money, -
4:56 - 5:00you better be reading books
that talk about money. -
5:00 - 5:04Or if you wanted to learn
how to manage your relationships, -
5:04 - 5:07or to become a better communicator,
there are a lot of books on that. -
5:07 - 5:09What I am saying basically,
-
5:09 - 5:14is there are libraries that are paved
with gold, and library cards are free. -
5:14 - 5:19Books are the tools
that release the heavens of your mind. -
5:19 - 5:21And leaders are readers.
-
5:21 - 5:25If you want to succeed,
you have to read. -
5:25 - 5:29Most people in the world
read about one book every single year, -
5:29 - 5:32that book, I would suppose,
would be Facebook. -
5:33 - 5:36And before people even get up
and do their things, -
5:36 - 5:40before they drink their coffee
or read their paper, they read Facebook. -
5:40 - 5:44But the truth is that if you study
miscellaneous things, -
5:44 - 5:46you get miscellaneous results;
-
5:46 - 5:48you become what you study.
-
5:48 - 5:51What do you study,
and where is it taking you? -
5:51 - 5:53A lot of people come up to me,
and they say, -
5:53 - 5:58"Daniel, I don't really have time to read.
I have kids, I have work, I am student. -
5:58 - 6:03I already have so many textbooks,
I am doing so many things, I am too busy." -
6:03 - 6:05But if you don't have 10 minutes a day,
-
6:05 - 6:08you're basically saying
you don't have a life. -
6:08 - 6:10We all have time to read,
-
6:10 - 6:12we all have time to pick up a good book
-
6:12 - 6:14and read for ourselves
so that we can learn. -
6:14 - 6:18Look! If you read 10 minutes a day,
for 30 straight days, -
6:18 - 6:20that is one book a month.
-
6:20 - 6:23One book a month, in 12 months,
is 12 books a year. -
6:23 - 6:27You can do in one year
what most people do in five years. -
6:27 - 6:29Talk about not having time.
-
6:29 - 6:31We all have time to read.
-
6:31 - 6:33Remember, readers are leaders,
-
6:33 - 6:37and the only way
you can succeed is if you read. -
6:37 - 6:39My second suggestion
-
6:39 - 6:42is about getting around
the best individuals you can. -
6:42 - 6:45We're the sum total of five people
-
6:45 - 6:48in which we surround ourselves
with the most. -
6:48 - 6:50We earn the same income,
we go to the same places, -
6:50 - 6:53we do the same things,
we think the same thoughts. -
6:53 - 6:55And if you were to look
at your five closest friends, -
6:55 - 6:58you've got to ask yourself
this one question, -
6:58 - 7:03"Who are my leaders,
and where are they taking me?" -
7:03 - 7:05In other words,
-
7:05 - 7:09"Are my leaders taking me
to the place I'd most likely want to be?" -
7:10 - 7:14If the answer is no,
then you need new leaders. -
7:14 - 7:17You need people who are inspiring,
people that can help you, -
7:17 - 7:22lift you up to the goals that transcend
your own possibility and your thinking. -
7:22 - 7:24You have to realize your goals,
-
7:24 - 7:27and you can only do that
by getting around the right people. -
7:27 - 7:31Many of us have what I like
to call "defult friends". -
7:31 - 7:36Default friends are basically people
that we see around the neighborhood, -
7:36 - 7:40people at the grocery store, the gym,
the mall, at church, at work, -
7:40 - 7:42everywhere we go.
-
7:42 - 7:44These are people
that we naturally befriend -
7:44 - 7:47as we start to gain
their trust and acceptance. -
7:47 - 7:51And what tends to happen is,
if you are a highly ambitious person, -
7:51 - 7:53and you have really high goals,
-
7:53 - 7:57a lot of these people
can help you reach your goals. -
7:57 - 8:00So you have to look outside,
you have to search for people. -
8:00 - 8:02I'll give you an example,
-
8:02 - 8:05I had a friend, his name was John,
and he was actually a plumber, -
8:05 - 8:08and his father and him
had a pretty successful business, -
8:08 - 8:10at least it seemed like it.
-
8:10 - 8:11So I asked John,
-
8:11 - 8:15"I want to start a business,
what exactly do you think I should do?" -
8:15 - 8:17John pulled me to the corner and said,
-
8:17 - 8:19"Daniel, I don't think
you want to start a business, -
8:19 - 8:2498% of businesses fail
within the first three years." -
8:24 - 8:28Then he proceeded to tell me about
all the reasons why I couldn't do it, -
8:28 - 8:30and why it won't work.
-
8:30 - 8:34He told me how was so hard
working over 100 hours a week, -
8:34 - 8:36how hard it was to manage payroll,
-
8:36 - 8:41and why the recession was holding him back
from getting more clients. -
8:41 - 8:44As he told me this, I became
a little discouraged, a little dejected, -
8:44 - 8:47and I went home, and I thought about it.
-
8:47 - 8:50When I get to my journal,
I usually reflect, -
8:50 - 8:55and I wrote down in my journal,
"The 98% of statistics are made up." -
8:55 - 8:56Including that one.
-
8:58 - 9:04You have to realize that no one's opinion
of you can become your reality. -
9:05 - 9:09And in order to change your reality,
you've to change your mentality -
9:09 - 9:12and the people you surround yourself with.
-
9:12 - 9:15You have to get yourself
around people who can help you, -
9:15 - 9:18people that are smarter than you,
people who have gone further than you; -
9:18 - 9:22people who know what you need to do
to get to that next level. -
9:22 - 9:25The truth is that the people
that you are looking for -
9:25 - 9:29are also looking for you,
but you have to find them. -
9:29 - 9:33Sometimes, we surround ourselves
with strangers and family members -
9:33 - 9:36who tell us what we can't do,
they limit us. -
9:36 - 9:38A lot of people have the right intentions,
-
9:38 - 9:42but often times,
they provide the wrong directions. -
9:42 - 9:46In other words, they want to help us,
but they just don't know how. -
9:46 - 9:48So get around people who can.
-
9:48 - 9:51A lot of people ask me,
"Daniel, how do you find these people?" -
9:51 - 9:52It is easy.
-
9:52 - 9:55If you flow step one,
which is to read more books, -
9:55 - 9:59you'll find that in the back of the book
there is the "About the Author" section. -
9:59 - 10:02What I used to do
is I used to reach out to the authors. -
10:02 - 10:04Thankfully, we live in a new millennium
-
10:04 - 10:08which allows us to get on
their social media, their websites, -
10:08 - 10:10and so we can have
a conversation with them. -
10:10 - 10:14We can change by actually understanding
what it is that they teach. -
10:14 - 10:19And if we ask enough questions,
we can make great progress in our life. -
10:19 - 10:22Remember that people you're looking for
are also looking for you, -
10:22 - 10:24so get yourself around those people.
-
10:24 - 10:28My last and final suggestion
is to set higher goals, -
10:28 - 10:30because goals make you stretch,
-
10:30 - 10:33they help you to become
more of who you are. -
10:33 - 10:35And in this enormity of conformity,
-
10:35 - 10:38so many people don't know
how to set goals, -
10:38 - 10:40they get confused about the process.
-
10:40 - 10:44A lot of people use
New Year's resolutions, -
10:44 - 10:47but the problem
with New Year's resolutions -
10:47 - 10:50is that the person often
tries to do too much, too fast. -
10:50 - 10:52Let's say Doug wants to stop smoking.
-
10:52 - 10:55On December 31st, he says, "I'm done."
-
10:55 - 10:59January 1st, "I'm clean, never again."
-
10:59 - 11:03He hasn't created a plan of action
to achieve his goals, -
11:03 - 11:06and therefore, it isn't reasonable.
-
11:06 - 11:08Bucket list is something else
that people do, -
11:08 - 11:10and usually, when someone
creates a bucket list, -
11:10 - 11:13they're giving themselves too much time.
-
11:13 - 11:17There is no urgency, and most of the time,
they don't write their goals down. -
11:17 - 11:19So, "What do you suggest?"
-
11:19 - 11:20Well, I am glad you asked.
-
11:20 - 11:24What I do suggest for you
is to write your goals down. -
11:24 - 11:27I believe that a dull pencil
is better than a sharp mind, -
11:27 - 11:31and to impress your subconscious mind,
you have to write your goals down, -
11:31 - 11:35so that you can hold this steadfastly
to who you are. -
11:35 - 11:37I have this method
I teach all around the world, -
11:37 - 11:39that's called, "The 20 Idea Method".
-
11:39 - 11:41Basically, what you do,
-
11:41 - 11:45is you select one overarching goal
that you would like to accomplish, -
11:45 - 11:49analyze 20 ideas
correspond with that particular goal. -
11:49 - 11:53Let's say, for instance,
you wanted to be a better public speaker. -
11:53 - 11:55What are some things you can do?
-
11:55 - 11:58Well, you could watch TED talks,
like you are now, -
11:58 - 12:02you could practice your speech,
look in the mirror to challenge yourself, -
12:02 - 12:04you could read the dictionary every day.
-
12:04 - 12:09There are so many things you can do,
but could I come up with 20 ideas? -
12:09 - 12:13The answer is, "Yes,
I can come up with a 100 if wanted to." -
12:13 - 12:16Imagine if you did this
in every area in your life: -
12:16 - 12:19financially, for promotions,
for your family, -
12:19 - 12:22and you wrote your goals on every day.
-
12:22 - 12:25You would be able to accomplish
so many things in your life. -
12:25 - 12:29We have everything we need
in order to succeed, -
12:29 - 12:33but we have to take the things we have
to get more of the things that we want; -
12:33 - 12:36from the cars that we drive,
to the clothes that we wear, -
12:36 - 12:39to the food that we eat,
and the people that we meet. -
12:39 - 12:45In this depository of diversity, we have
everything we need in order to succeed, -
12:45 - 12:47But we have to believe.
-
12:47 - 12:49When you believe in yourself,
-
12:49 - 12:52you will find that everyone in the world
will believe in you. -
12:52 - 12:54And you also have to think big.
-
12:54 - 12:57When you think big,
you will do big, and you will win big. -
12:57 - 13:01Well, B-I-G is actually is the 3 ideas
that I want to share with you today: -
13:01 - 13:02B -- the books that you read,
-
13:02 - 13:05I -- the individuals that you meet,
-
13:05 - 13:08and G -- the goals
that you set for yourself. -
13:08 - 13:12Books, individuals, and goals:
that's all you need to accomplish success, -
13:12 - 13:14because when you think big,
you will do big, -
13:14 - 13:17and you will win big, my friends.
-
13:17 - 13:18Thank you.
-
13:18 - 13:19(Applause).
