Less stuff, more happiness
-
0:04 - 0:07What's in the box?
-
0:07 - 0:09Whatever it is must be pretty important,
-
0:09 - 0:12because I've traveled with it, moved it,
-
0:12 - 0:15from apartment to apartment to apartment.
-
0:15 - 0:17(Laughter)
-
0:17 - 0:20(Applause)
-
0:20 - 0:23Sound familiar?
-
0:23 - 0:25Did you know that we Americans
-
0:25 - 0:27have about three times the amount of space
-
0:27 - 0:29we did 50 years ago?
-
0:29 - 0:32Three times.
-
0:32 - 0:35So you'd think, with all this extra space,
-
0:35 - 0:38we'd have plenty of room for all our stuff.
-
0:38 - 0:40Nope.
-
0:40 - 0:42There's a new industry in town,
-
0:42 - 0:45a 22 billion-dollar, 2.2 billion sq. ft. industry:
-
0:45 - 0:47that of personal storage.
-
0:47 - 0:49So we've got triple the space,
-
0:49 - 0:52but we've become such good shoppers
-
0:52 - 0:55that we need even more space.
-
0:55 - 0:57So where does this lead?
-
0:57 - 0:59Lots of credit card debt,
-
0:59 - 1:02huge environmental footprints,
-
1:02 - 1:04and perhaps not coincidentally,
-
1:04 - 1:07our happiness levels flat-lined over the same 50 years.
-
1:07 - 1:10Well I'm here to suggest there's a better way,
-
1:10 - 1:13that less might actually equal more.
-
1:13 - 1:15I bet most of us have experienced at some point
-
1:15 - 1:18the joys of less:
-
1:18 - 1:21college -- in your dorm,
-
1:21 - 1:24traveling -- in a hotel room,
-
1:24 - 1:26camping -- rig up basically nothing,
-
1:26 - 1:28maybe a boat.
-
1:28 - 1:31Whatever it was for you, I bet that, among other things,
-
1:31 - 1:33this gave you a little more freedom,
-
1:33 - 1:36a little more time.
-
1:36 - 1:38So I'm going to suggest
-
1:38 - 1:40that less stuff and less space
-
1:40 - 1:42are going to equal a smaller footprint.
-
1:42 - 1:44It's actually a great way to save you some money.
-
1:44 - 1:47And it's going to give you a little more ease in your life.
-
1:47 - 1:50So I started a project called Life Edited at lifeedited.org
-
1:50 - 1:52to further this conversation
-
1:52 - 1:55and to find some great solutions in this area.
-
1:55 - 1:59First up: crowd-sourcing my 420 sq. ft. apartment in Manhattan
-
1:59 - 2:02with partners Mutopo and Jovoto.com.
-
2:02 - 2:04I wanted it all --
-
2:04 - 2:07home office, sit down dinner for 10,
-
2:07 - 2:09room for guests,
-
2:09 - 2:11and all my kite surfing gear.
-
2:11 - 2:14With over 300 entries from around the world,
-
2:14 - 2:17I got it, my own little jewel box.
-
2:17 - 2:19By buying a space that was 420 sq. ft.
-
2:19 - 2:22instead of 600,
-
2:22 - 2:25immediately I'm saving 200 grand.
-
2:25 - 2:28Smaller space is going to make for smaller utilities --
-
2:28 - 2:31save some more money there,
-
2:31 - 2:33but also a smaller footprint.
-
2:33 - 2:35And because it's really designed
-
2:35 - 2:37around an edited set of possessions -- my favorite stuff --
-
2:37 - 2:39and really designed for me,
-
2:39 - 2:41I'm really excited to be there.
-
2:41 - 2:43So how can you live little?
-
2:43 - 2:45Three main approaches.
-
2:45 - 2:48First of all, you have to edit ruthlessly.
-
2:48 - 2:51We've got to clear the arteries of our lives.
-
2:51 - 2:54And that shirt that I hadn't worn in years?
-
2:54 - 2:56It's time for me to let it go.
-
2:56 - 2:59We've got to cut the extraneous out of our lives,
-
2:59 - 3:02and we've got to learn to stem the inflow.
-
3:02 - 3:04We need to think before we buy.
-
3:04 - 3:06Ask ourselves,
-
3:06 - 3:09"Is that really going to make me happier? Truly?"
-
3:09 - 3:11By all means,
-
3:11 - 3:13we should buy and own some great stuff.
-
3:13 - 3:16But we want stuff that we're going to love for years,
-
3:16 - 3:18not just stuff.
-
3:18 - 3:20Secondly, our new mantra:
-
3:20 - 3:22small is sexy.
-
3:22 - 3:24We want space efficiency.
-
3:24 - 3:26We want things that are designed
-
3:26 - 3:28for how they're used the vast majority of the time,
-
3:28 - 3:30not that rare event.
-
3:30 - 3:32Why have a six burner stove
-
3:32 - 3:34when you rarely use three?
-
3:34 - 3:36So we want things that nest,
-
3:36 - 3:39we want things that stack, and we want it digitized.
-
3:39 - 3:41You can take paperwork,
-
3:41 - 3:43books, movies,
-
3:43 - 3:46and you can make it disappear -- it's magic.
-
3:46 - 3:50Finally, we want multifunctional spaces and housewares --
-
3:50 - 3:52a sink combined with a toilet,
-
3:52 - 3:54a dining table becomes a bed --
-
3:54 - 3:56same space,
-
3:56 - 3:58a little side table
-
3:58 - 4:00stretches out to seat 10.
-
4:00 - 4:03In the winning Life Edited scheme in a render here,
-
4:03 - 4:05we combine a moving wall with transformer furniture
-
4:05 - 4:07to get a lot out of the space.
-
4:07 - 4:09Look at the coffee table --
-
4:09 - 4:11it grows in height and width
-
4:11 - 4:13to seat 10.
-
4:13 - 4:15My office folds away,
-
4:15 - 4:17easily hidden.
-
4:17 - 4:20My bed just pops out of the wall with two fingers.
-
4:20 - 4:23Guests? Move the moving wall,
-
4:23 - 4:25have some fold-down guest beds.
-
4:25 - 4:28And of course, my own movie theater.
-
4:28 - 4:30So I'm not saying that we all need to live
-
4:30 - 4:32in 420 sq. ft.
-
4:32 - 4:35But consider the benefits of an edited life.
-
4:35 - 4:37Go from 3,000 to 2,000,
-
4:37 - 4:40from 1,500 to 1,000.
-
4:40 - 4:42Most of us, maybe all of us,
-
4:42 - 4:44are here pretty happily for a bunch of days
-
4:44 - 4:46with a couple of bags,
-
4:46 - 4:48maybe a small space, a hotel room.
-
4:48 - 4:51So when you go home and you walk through your front door,
-
4:51 - 4:53take a second and ask yourselves,
-
4:53 - 4:55"Could I do with a little life editing?
-
4:55 - 4:57Would that give me a little more freedom?
-
4:57 - 5:00Maybe a little more time?"
-
5:01 - 5:04What's in the box?
-
5:04 - 5:07It doesn't really matter.
-
5:07 - 5:10I know I don't need it.
-
5:10 - 5:12What's in yours?
-
5:12 - 5:14Maybe, just maybe,
-
5:14 - 5:16less might equal more.
-
5:16 - 5:18So let's make room
-
5:18 - 5:20for the good stuff.
-
5:20 - 5:22Thank you.
-
5:22 - 5:28(Applause)
