Can you solve the dark coin riddle? - Lisa Winer
-
0:07 - 0:08You heard the traveler's tales,
-
0:08 - 0:10you followed the crumbling maps,
-
0:10 - 0:13and now, after a long and dangerous quest,
-
0:13 - 0:16you have some good news and some bad news.
-
0:16 - 0:19The good news is you've managed to locate
the legendary dungeon -
0:19 - 0:23containing the stash
of ancient Stygian coins -
0:23 - 0:26and the eccentric wizard
who owns the castle -
0:26 - 0:29has even generously
agreed to let you have them. -
0:29 - 0:32The bad news is that he's not
quite as generous -
0:32 - 0:38about letting you leave the dungeon,
unless you solve his puzzle. -
0:38 - 0:40The task sounds simple enough.
-
0:40 - 0:44Both faces of each coin bear
the fearsome scorpion crest, -
0:44 - 0:45one in silver,
-
0:45 - 0:47one in gold.
-
0:47 - 0:51And all you have to do is separate them
into two piles -
0:51 - 0:56so that each has the same number
of coins facing silver side up. -
0:56 - 1:00You're about to begin when all
of the torches suddenly blow out -
1:00 - 1:03and you're left in total darkness.
-
1:03 - 1:05There are hundreds
of coins in front of you -
1:05 - 1:09and each one feels the same on both sides.
-
1:09 - 1:12You try to remember
where the silver-facing coins were, -
1:12 - 1:13but it's hopeless.
-
1:13 - 1:15You've lost track.
-
1:15 - 1:17But you do know one thing for certain.
-
1:17 - 1:19When there was still light,
-
1:19 - 1:23you counted exactly
20 silver-side-up coins in the pile. -
1:23 - 1:25What can you do?
-
1:25 - 1:29Are you doomed to remain in the dungeon
with your newfound treasure forever? -
1:29 - 1:32You're tempted to kick the pile of coins
-
1:32 - 1:35and curse the curiosity
that brought you here. -
1:35 - 1:37But at the last moment, you stop yourself.
-
1:37 - 1:42You just realized there's
a surprisingly easy solution. -
1:42 - 1:43What is it?
-
1:43 - 1:47Pause here if you want to figure
it out for yourself. -
1:47 - 1:48Answer in: 3
-
1:48 - 1:49Answer in: 2
-
1:49 - 1:51Answer in: 1
-
1:51 - 1:54You carefully move aside 20 coins
one by one. -
1:54 - 1:58It doesn't matter which ones:
any coins will do, -
1:58 - 2:00and then flip each one of them over.
-
2:00 - 2:02That's all there is to it.
-
2:02 - 2:05Why does such a simple solution work?
-
2:05 - 2:08Well, it doesn't matter how many
coins there are to start with. -
2:08 - 2:13What matters is that only 20
of the total are facing silver side up. -
2:13 - 2:16When you take 20 coins in the darkness,
-
2:16 - 2:19you have no way of knowing how many
of these silver-facing coins -
2:19 - 2:22have ended up in your new pile.
-
2:22 - 2:24But let's suppose you got seven of them.
-
2:24 - 2:28This means that there are thirteen
silver-facing coins left -
2:28 - 2:30in the original pile.
-
2:30 - 2:33It also means that the other
thirteen coins in your new pile -
2:33 - 2:36are facing gold side up.
-
2:36 - 2:40So what happens when you flip
all of the coins in the new pile over? -
2:40 - 2:45Seven gold-facing coins and
thirteen silver-facing coins -
2:45 - 2:48to match the ones in the original pile.
-
2:48 - 2:53It turns out this works no matter how
many of the silver-facing coins you grab, -
2:53 - 2:54whether it's all of them,
a few, or none at all. -
2:57 - 3:01That's because of what's known
as complementary events. -
3:01 - 3:04We know that each coin only has
two possible options. -
3:04 - 3:08If it's not facing silver side up,
it must be gold side up, -
3:08 - 3:10and vice versa,
-
3:10 - 3:12and in any combination of 20 coins,
-
3:12 - 3:15the number of gold-facing
and silver-facing coins -
3:15 - 3:18must add up to 20.
-
3:18 - 3:21We can prove this mathematically
using algebra. -
3:21 - 3:24The number of silver-facing coins
remaining in the original pile -
3:24 - 3:29will always be 20 minus
however many you moved to the new pile. -
3:29 - 3:33And since your new pile also
has a total of 20 coins, -
3:33 - 3:35its number of gold-facing coins will be
-
3:35 - 3:3920 minus the amount of
silver-facing coins you moved. -
3:39 - 3:42When all the coins in the new pile
are flipped, -
3:42 - 3:46these gold-facing coins become
silver-facing coins, -
3:46 - 3:52so now the number of silver-facing
coins in both piles is the same. -
3:52 - 3:55The gate swings open
and you hurry away with your treasure -
3:55 - 3:57before the wizard changes his mind.
-
3:57 - 4:01At the next crossroads, you flip
one of your hard-earned coins -
4:01 - 4:04to determine the way
to your next adventure. -
4:04 - 4:07But before you go, we have another
quick coin riddle for you – -
4:07 - 4:12one that comes from this video
sponsor’s excellent website. -
