June 1 - The Tour de Shetlands
-
0:05 - 0:07We've come to the Shetland Islands.
-
0:07 - 0:11The reason being,
there's 23,000 people here, -
0:11 - 0:13and not a single Adventist.
-
0:13 - 0:15We want to reach them with the gospel,
-
0:15 - 0:18and we'd love to see them
ready for Jesus to return. -
0:20 - 0:22The Shetland Islands are part of Scotland
-
0:23 - 0:25and the northernmost part
of the United Kingdom. -
0:25 - 0:26Anthony Kent,
-
0:26 - 0:30the associate ministerial secretary
at the General Conference, -
0:30 - 0:33put together a small team of pastors
from Scotland and the UK -
0:33 - 0:35to spend one week cycling
through the islands -
0:35 - 0:38to tell people about Jesus
and hand out Christian literature. -
0:39 - 0:41After an overnight ferry ride
to reach the islands, -
0:41 - 0:44the team prepared to set off
to reach the unreached. -
0:46 - 0:47As far as we know,
-
0:47 - 0:50there are no Adventist members
on the Shetlands. -
0:51 - 0:55And how do you approach
trying to make contact? -
0:55 - 0:59What would Paul and his associates do
-
0:59 - 1:01if they were doing a missionary journey
-
1:01 - 1:03and they landed in Lerwick,
-
1:03 - 1:07and they were to start
in the Shetland Islands? -
1:07 - 1:09Maybe Paul also would have used a bicycle
-
1:09 - 1:11to share Jesus with people today.
-
1:11 - 1:14The team set out to ride
through every inhabited street, -
1:14 - 1:16stopping with anyone they met.
-
1:17 - 1:18Much like the apostle Paul,
-
1:18 - 1:20Anthony and his team
had to endure hardships -
1:20 - 1:22in the form of wind, rain, and hills.
-
1:23 - 1:24It's cold.
-
1:24 - 1:26It's cold.
-
1:26 - 1:30But this is still really good fun
and people's hearts are open. -
1:30 - 1:32The weather's cold,
but the people are warm. -
1:32 - 1:33Praise God for that.
-
1:33 - 1:35This isn’t the first I Will Go bike ride.
-
1:36 - 1:37Anthony has led a cycling ministry trip
-
1:37 - 1:41from Washington DC to St. Louis,
as well as some in Australia. -
1:42 - 1:45What we found is, it's a wonderful way
-
1:45 - 1:50to generate significant
but brief conversations -
1:50 - 1:53and an opportunity to share the gospel.
-
1:53 - 1:55So it's worked in the past,
-
1:56 - 1:59and we thought
we'd give it a go in Shetland. -
2:00 - 2:01There’s a special reason
-
2:01 - 2:03the Shetland Islands
were chosen for this ride. -
2:04 - 2:05A man named Philip Reekie
-
2:05 - 2:08emigrated from Scotland
to Australia in the late 1800’s. -
2:09 - 2:12He rode his bike thousands
of miles around Australia -
2:12 - 2:14sharing the gospel
with anyone he rode past. -
2:15 - 2:17One of those people happened to be
-
2:17 - 2:19Anthony Kent’s great-great-grandfather.
-
2:20 - 2:23Philip Reekie rode up to him on a bicycle
-
2:23 - 2:26and shared with him
the Great Controversy, -
2:26 - 2:29and it completely transformed his life.
-
2:29 - 2:30Now, in our family,
-
2:30 - 2:34there are seven generations of Adventists,
-
2:34 - 2:38as a result of Philip Reekie
doing that wonderful ministry. -
2:38 - 2:42Our dream was to take
the spirit of Philip Reekie -
2:42 - 2:48and his desire to lead people
to Christ back to his homeland. -
2:49 - 2:51Following Philip Reekie’s legacy,
-
2:51 - 2:54the team took Jesus’ call
to go to the ends of the earth -
2:54 - 2:56and applied it to their work
in the Shetlands. -
2:56 - 2:58We’ve literally gone
-
2:58 - 3:01from the very south
of the Shetland Islands, -
3:01 - 3:03to Sumburgh,
-
3:04 - 3:09and we’ve gone all the way north
as far as we can ride a bike. -
3:09 - 3:12From sea to sea in a sense.
-
3:12 - 3:14We haven't just stayed on the main roads.
-
3:15 - 3:18We've deliberately ridden past homes.
-
3:19 - 3:21We've seen people out and about,
-
3:21 - 3:25whether they're cutting their grass,
putting their washing out, -
3:25 - 3:29walking their dog, farming,
working in the outdoors. -
3:30 - 3:33We've gone to where people are available,
-
3:33 - 3:36and we've had wonderful
conversations with them. -
3:36 - 3:39Although this is not
the way they normally witness, -
3:39 - 3:41they've seen the value of trying
unique methods of ministry. -
3:41 - 3:44We have here a group of pastors.
-
3:45 - 3:46They're not cyclists.
-
3:47 - 3:50They're willing to go
to the ends of the earth, -
3:50 - 3:55even if it means riding a bike,
in wet, cold, windy conditions, -
3:55 - 3:58if it may lead one person to Jesus.
-
4:00 - 4:03My dream is that people
will look at unentered places. -
4:04 - 4:08Places where we don't have any followers,
-
4:09 - 4:12and do what you can do to reach them.
-
4:13 - 4:15Please pray for ministries
-
4:15 - 4:18such as the I Will Go Bike Ride,
and others around the world -
4:18 - 4:20who are using unique methods of ministry
-
4:20 - 4:21to reach the unreached.
-
4:22 - 4:24Thank you for your support of Mission.
-
5:03 - 5:06Well, first of all, when I ride this,
-
5:06 - 5:08it's so much fun,
-
5:08 - 5:10and I literally feel like a kid again.
-
5:11 - 5:15Like a young person
with wind blowing in my face, -
5:15 - 5:18and through my hair, what hair is left.
-
5:19 - 5:23And I really sense the pleasure of God,
-
5:24 - 5:28that this is something
that we're doing together. -
5:28 - 5:31When a witnessing opportunity comes,
we do that together, -
5:31 - 5:36and it's just incredibly good, fun.
