Simon Evans: A reality movie about a poster

Artist Simon Evans is known for his imaginative works where he uses old-fashioned scissors, paste and paper to describe modern life. Here he has set the task of creating an artwork based on a poster.

The British, Berlin based, artist Simon Evans (b.1972) is known for his fascinating cut and paste artworks, like 'Everyone', where he presents a map with small pictures of the people who have been important to him. In another work he talks about 300 secrets, and in 'Everything I have' he shows small renderings of all the artist's possessions.

In this video we follow Simon and his partner Sarah Evans as they work on transforming a festival poster into an artwork.

With Simon Evans ans Sarah Evans

[Music]

[Simon:] They wanted us to do something
on the poster.

So we wrote a letter to the community members.

So I wrote in Lousiana.

It's so much, we wrote it outside.

Sarah worked out the measurement,
so we fit everything from the poster.

And now I'm making, doing, wrinting the words within the measurement that she created.

[laughs]

Then we are going to trace them onto couloured paper and then cut them out.

[Sarah:] I want you to scratch the ...

[Simon:] Surface?

[Sarah:] A little bit.

[Simon:] So I was gonna scratch the surface with a knife to create a used effect.

Dear art community members this feels like project runway making this poster to the end

Today is Friday in the childrens wing

The only place in the museum where we can make our mess

Compose the visible and unfolded book of the future

This is concessions for received dreams

Also a big thank you note like children leave on field trips in ice cream shops.
