Happiness Is All in Your Mind: Gen Kelsang Nyema at TEDxGreenville
-
0:12 - 0:14Alright, my friends. Hello.
-
0:14 - 0:17(Audience) Hello.
-
0:18 - 0:22So I want to start off
with a few questions. -
0:24 - 0:26And I know a lot of other presenters
-
0:26 - 0:29have already asked you questions,
-
0:29 - 0:34and they've been kind of hard questions.
-
0:34 - 0:36But the questions I'm going to ask you
-
0:36 - 0:38are very, very simple.
-
0:38 - 0:42And I promise
you'll be able to answer these. -
0:42 - 0:46Alright, are you ready?
For your first one? -
0:46 - 0:47Okay.
-
0:47 - 0:50Your first questions is --
-
0:50 - 0:53you don't have to answer out loud:
-
0:54 - 0:57Are you having a good day?
-
1:00 - 1:03Okay, got your answer?
-
1:03 - 1:05Alright.
-
1:07 - 1:10My second question for you is:
-
1:12 - 1:13Why?
-
1:13 - 1:16If you're having a good day,
-
1:16 - 1:19why are you having a good day?
-
1:20 - 1:23Or if you're having a bad day,
-
1:23 - 1:26why are you having a bad day?
-
1:31 - 1:34So I have one more question for you.
-
1:35 - 1:38This should be the easiest one of all.
-
1:38 - 1:41My last question is:
-
1:41 - 1:43Tomorrow,
-
1:44 - 1:46would you rather have a good day,
-
1:47 - 1:51or would you rather have a bad day?
-
1:54 - 1:57Do you have your answer for that one?
-
1:57 - 1:59What about the day after tomorrow?
-
1:59 - 2:01What about Sunday?
-
2:01 - 2:03Let's see. Yeah, that's right.
-
2:03 - 2:06Tomorrow's Saturday. Sunday.
-
2:06 - 2:08How about Monday?
-
2:08 - 2:10Would you like to have
a good day or a bad day -
2:10 - 2:12on Monday?
-
2:13 - 2:15Tuesday?
-
2:15 - 2:17Wednesday? Thursday? Friday?
-
2:17 - 2:19This time next week?
-
2:19 - 2:22A good day or a bad day?
-
2:27 - 2:31So that last question,
-
2:33 - 2:35like I said, is probably the easiest one
-
2:35 - 2:37for us to answer,
-
2:37 - 2:40because we know
the answer to that, don't we? -
2:40 - 2:41We want to have a good day,
-
2:41 - 2:43everyday.
-
2:43 - 2:45Did anyone in the room answer,
-
2:45 - 2:51"Yes, I want to have a bad day on Monday"?
-
2:51 - 2:53Of course not.
-
2:53 - 2:56We all want to have a good day everyday.
-
3:01 - 3:05So this is really speaking
to the type of happiness -
3:05 - 3:07that we all wish for
-
3:07 - 3:09in our heart of hearts.
-
3:09 - 3:12We have a good day when we're happy,
-
3:15 - 3:19and we want to be happy everyday.
-
3:19 - 3:21There's never a day
-
3:21 - 3:24when we don't want to be happy.
-
3:27 - 3:30But whether or not
we have good days or bad days -
3:30 - 3:34really depends upon how we answered
-
3:34 - 3:36the second question.
-
3:36 - 3:38Do you remember the second question?
-
3:38 - 3:40What was the second question?
-
3:40 - 3:41"Why?"
-
3:41 - 3:44Why am I having a good day?
-
3:44 - 3:48Why am I having a bad day?
-
3:50 - 3:53So one thing that my teacher says
-
3:53 - 3:56-- his name is Geshe Kelsang Gyatso --
-
3:57 - 4:00and he says that,
-
4:00 - 4:02"Much of the time
-
4:02 - 4:04our mind is like
-
4:04 - 4:07a balloon in the wind,
-
4:07 - 4:09blown here and there
-
4:09 - 4:13by external circumstances."
-
4:13 - 4:15Do you know that feeling?
-
4:15 - 4:19He says when things are going well,
-
4:19 - 4:22when they're going our way,
-
4:22 - 4:24we feel happy.
-
4:24 - 4:27But then if something goes wrong,
-
4:28 - 4:30for example, he says,
-
4:30 - 4:34"If we're forced to
work with a colleague that we dislike," -
4:36 - 4:40but I'm sure none of you
have colleagues you dislike, right? -
4:40 - 4:41(Laughter)
-
4:44 - 4:46He says if we're forced to
work with someone we dislike, -
4:46 - 4:48or if something doesn't go our way,
-
4:48 - 4:52then our happy feeling disappears.
-
4:59 - 5:02So as long as our answer to the question
-
5:02 - 5:05"why am I having a good day?",
or "why am I having a bad day?" -
5:05 - 5:07Because you know,
this is a question people ask us -
5:07 - 5:10like, maybe when you get home today,
-
5:10 - 5:13someone will go,
"So how was that TED thing?" -
5:13 - 5:15"Did you have a good day?"
-
5:16 - 5:19And we'll say, "Yeah, I did."
-
5:19 - 5:21"There's this lady,
and she talked to us about -
5:21 - 5:26how we need to be compassionate
towards former inmates, -
5:26 - 5:32and there's this performer who did this
awesome beat-boxing thing with his mouth, -
5:32 - 5:35you know, this person, and that person."
-
5:35 - 5:37As long as our reasons
-
5:37 - 5:44for why we had a good day are
a list of external conditions, -
5:44 - 5:47then we're not going to
-
5:47 - 5:51have this stable happiness that we all want.
-
5:52 - 5:54Does that make sense to you?
-
5:55 - 5:59Because if that's what our happiness
depends upon -- -
5:59 - 6:01because we cannot control
-
6:01 - 6:05people and circumstances
-
6:05 - 6:07every single day --
-
6:09 - 6:15then our happiness will
be in the hands of others, won't it? -
6:16 - 6:21It'll be at the whim of our circumstances.
-
6:24 - 6:26So if you really wish
-
6:26 - 6:28to have a good day everyday,
-
6:28 - 6:31we've got two things we need to do.
-
6:32 - 6:34So the first thing that we need to do
-
6:34 - 6:37is we need to stop
-
6:38 - 6:42outsourcing our happiness
-
6:42 - 6:45and outsourcing our unhappiness
-
6:45 - 6:49on the people and circumstances.
-
6:49 - 6:51In other words,
-
6:53 - 6:57we need to stop attributing our happiness
-
6:57 - 7:00to what's going on externally,
-
7:01 - 7:06and we need to stop blaming others,
-
7:06 - 7:09-- especially blaming others --
-
7:09 - 7:12for our unhappiness.
-
7:14 - 7:16So for as long as we do that,
-
7:16 - 7:18as long as we're making it
-
7:18 - 7:23the job of people and circumstances
-
7:23 - 7:25to make us happy,
-
7:25 - 7:30or as long as we're making it their fault
when we're unhappy, -
7:30 - 7:33our happiness will be very unstable,
-
7:34 - 7:37and illusive.
-
7:40 - 7:42Our second job
-
7:43 - 7:47is to actively cultivate
-
7:47 - 7:51a source of peace and a source of happiness
-
7:51 - 7:55coming from inside our own mind.
-
7:59 - 8:02So here's something I want you to
commit to memory. -
8:02 - 8:04Are you ready?
-
8:06 - 8:08This is another line
-
8:08 - 8:10from one of my teacher's books,
-
8:10 - 8:12where he says,
-
8:13 - 8:17"Happiness and unhappiness
-
8:17 - 8:20are states of mind;
-
8:22 - 8:26and therefore their real causes
-
8:26 - 8:30cannot be found outside the mind."
-
8:34 - 8:37So if we have a peaceful state of mind,
-
8:37 - 8:39we will be happy
-
8:39 - 8:44regardless of people and circumstances.
-
8:44 - 8:48If our mind is unpeaceful or agitated,
-
8:48 - 8:51then even if we have
very good circumstances, -
8:51 - 8:54we'll find it impossible to be happy.
-
8:59 - 9:01So, in other words,
-
9:04 - 9:07it's not what is happening
-
9:07 - 9:10that is making us happy or unhappy;
-
9:11 - 9:16it is how we are responding
to those things -
9:16 - 9:20that determines whether
we're happy or unhappy. -
9:21 - 9:24It is what our state of mind is like
-
9:26 - 9:30that determines
our happiness or unhappiness. -
9:34 - 9:37So how are we going to do this?
-
9:37 - 9:39So we can all
understand this intellectually. -
9:39 - 9:41It's not rocket science, is it?
-
9:41 - 9:43It's not hard to understand.
-
9:43 - 9:46And maybe, to a certain extent,
-
9:46 - 9:48as I tell you these things,
-
9:48 - 9:50you're like, "Yeah , I knew that already."
-
9:50 - 9:53"I knew that already."
-
9:54 - 9:56But how do we actually do it?
-
9:56 - 9:59How do we actually cultivate
-
9:59 - 10:02this stable peace of mind
-
10:02 - 10:05that we can rely upon,
-
10:05 - 10:08regardless of the external circumstances?
-
10:10 - 10:15So this is really where meditation
comes into play. -
10:15 - 10:20And I would say I would need
a whole other TED talk -
10:20 - 10:24-- hint, hint -- (Laughter)
-
10:24 - 10:29in order to really
do this subject of meditation justice. -
10:29 - 10:32But for our purposes today,
-
10:32 - 10:34we can say that meditation
-
10:34 - 10:37is a mental action.
-
10:37 - 10:41It's the mental action of concentrating
-
10:41 - 10:45on a peaceful positive state of mind.
-
10:45 - 10:49If we do that, we concentrate
-
10:49 - 10:52on a peaceful positive state of mind,
-
10:52 - 10:54then we can say we're meditating,
-
10:54 - 10:57whether that's like this, right?
-
10:58 - 11:01See, actually, you don't know
if I'm meditating or not, -
11:01 - 11:03because I could be thinking
about my grocery list. -
11:03 - 11:05(Laughter)
-
11:09 - 11:10It's only meditation
-
11:10 - 11:15if I'm actually focusing
on a positive peaceful state of mind. -
11:15 - 11:18But the trick is, I can do it like this.
-
11:18 - 11:21This is called formal meditation.
-
11:21 - 11:23But we can also learn to do this
all the time -
11:23 - 11:26in our daily life.
-
11:32 - 11:34See, here's a perfect opportunity.
-
11:34 - 11:36(Laughter)
-
11:36 - 11:39We concentrate on a mind of patience.
-
11:39 - 11:43We're not disturbed, not unhappy.
-
11:43 - 11:45So why don't we try it now?
-
11:45 - 11:47Are you up for it? Just a short meditation.
-
11:47 - 11:50According to the clock,
I've got three minutes left, -
11:50 - 11:52so this is going to be a very brief one.
-
11:52 - 11:56But let's actually try it, let's try
-
11:56 - 12:00to tap into our own potential
-
12:00 - 12:03for a peaceful positive state of mind.
-
12:06 - 12:10So now, I'll ask you
to just sit comfortably, -
12:13 - 12:17and place your feet flat on the floor,
-
12:17 - 12:20and your hands within your lap.
-
12:24 - 12:28And then you can lightly close your eyes
-
12:32 - 12:36and become aware of
the sensation of your breath, -
12:38 - 12:40at the tip of your nose.
-
12:47 - 12:50And as you breathe out,
-
12:50 - 12:52you can imagine
-
12:53 - 12:57you're breathing out any agitation,
-
13:01 - 13:04any mental business,
-
13:08 - 13:09any frustration
-
13:09 - 13:12or unhappiness in your life.
-
13:15 - 13:17Breathing it all out,
-
13:19 - 13:21like dark smoke.
-
13:35 - 13:38And as you breathe in,
-
13:41 - 13:44you can imagine and believe
-
13:47 - 13:52that you're breathing in
a clear, bright light, -
13:56 - 14:02which is a very nature of inner peace.
-
14:09 - 14:13And you can imagine that
this clear, bright light -
14:15 - 14:20fills your entire body and mind.
-
14:37 - 14:40And for a few seconds,
-
14:42 - 14:44simply enjoy
-
14:47 - 14:51this inner peace coming from within.
-
15:11 - 15:13And now, as we finish,
-
15:15 - 15:20just be determined to
bring this inner peace with you -
15:21 - 15:23into the rest of your day
-
15:24 - 15:26to benefit yourself
-
15:26 - 15:28and others.
-
15:30 - 15:34So now, we rise from meditation.
-
15:38 - 15:40Thank you very much.
-
15:40 - 15:43(Applause)

- Happiness Is All in Your Mind: Gen Kelsang Nyema at TEDxGreenville
- Description:
-
Gen Kelsang Nyema, a Buddhist nun, says that the gift of happiness truly lies within our own hearts and minds. We cannot put our happiness at the whim of other people and of circumstances. If we want to be happy, we have to "stop outsourcing our happiness to other people" and cultivate a source of inner peace.
