For more tolerance, we need more ... tourism?
-
0:01 - 0:04I'm a tourism entrepreneur
and a peacebuilder, -
0:04 - 0:07but this is not how I started.
-
0:07 - 0:10When I was seven years old,
I remember watching television -
0:10 - 0:12and seeing people throwing rocks,
-
0:12 - 0:16and thinking, this must be
a fun thing to do. -
0:16 - 0:18So I got out to the street
and threw rocks, -
0:18 - 0:23not realizing I was supposed
to throw rocks at Israeli cars. -
0:23 - 0:27Instead, I ended up stoning
my neighbors' cars. (Laughter) -
0:27 - 0:31They were not enthusiastic
about my patriotism. -
0:31 - 0:33This is my picture with my brother.
-
0:33 - 0:36This is me, the little one,
and I know what you're thinking: -
0:36 - 0:39"You used to look cute,
what the heck happened to you?" -
0:39 - 0:41But my brother, who is older than me,
-
0:41 - 0:43was arrested when he was 18,
-
0:43 - 0:46taken to prison on charges
of throwing stones. -
0:46 - 0:50He was beaten up when he refused
to confess that he threw stones, -
0:50 - 0:52and as a result, had internal injuries
-
0:52 - 0:57that caused his death soon after
he was released from prison. -
0:57 - 1:00I was angry, I was bitter,
-
1:00 - 1:04and all I wanted was revenge.
-
1:04 - 1:07But that changed when I was 18.
-
1:07 - 1:10I decided that I needed
Hebrew to get a job, -
1:10 - 1:13and going to study Hebrew
in that classroom -
1:13 - 1:18was the first time I ever met Jews
who were not soldiers. -
1:18 - 1:23And we connected over really small things,
like the fact that I love country music, -
1:23 - 1:27which is really strange
for Palestinians. -
1:27 - 1:31But it was then that I realized also
that we have a wall of anger, -
1:31 - 1:37of hatred and of ignorance
that separates us. -
1:37 - 1:41I decided that it doesn't matter
what happens to me. -
1:41 - 1:44What really matters is how I deal with it.
-
1:44 - 1:47And therefore, I decided
to dedicate my life -
1:47 - 1:52to bringing down the walls
that separate people. -
1:52 - 1:54I do so through many ways.
-
1:54 - 1:57Tourism is one of them,
but also media and education, -
1:57 - 2:01and you might be wondering,
really, can tourism change things? -
2:01 - 2:02Can it bring down walls? Yes.
-
2:02 - 2:07Tourism is the best sustainable way
to bring down those walls -
2:07 - 2:11and to create a sustainable way
of connecting with each other -
2:11 - 2:14and creating friendships.
-
2:14 - 2:18In 2009, I cofounded Mejdi Tours,
-
2:18 - 2:21a social enterprise that
aims to connect people, -
2:21 - 2:24with two Jewish friends, by the way,
-
2:24 - 2:26and what we'll do, the model we did,
-
2:26 - 2:30for example, in Jerusalem,
we would have two tour guides, -
2:30 - 2:33one Israeli and one Palestinian,
guiding the trips together, -
2:33 - 2:36telling history and narrative
and archaeology and conflict -
2:36 - 2:39from totally different perspectives.
-
2:39 - 2:43I remember running a trip together
with a friend named Kobi -- -
2:43 - 2:46Jewish congregation from Chicago,
the trip was in Jerusalem -- -
2:46 - 2:49and we took them to a refugee camp,
a Palestinian refugee camp, -
2:49 - 2:51and there we had this amazing food.
-
2:51 - 2:54By the way, this is my mother. She's cool.
-
2:54 - 2:56And that's the Palestinian
food called maqluba. -
2:56 - 2:58It means "upside-down."
-
2:58 - 3:01You cook it with rice and chicken,
and you flip it upside-down. -
3:01 - 3:02It's the best meal ever.
-
3:02 - 3:04And we'll eat together.
-
3:04 - 3:07Then we had a joint band,
Israeli and Palestinian musicians, -
3:07 - 3:08and we did some belly-dancing.
-
3:08 - 3:12If you don't know any,
I'll teach you later. -
3:12 - 3:15But when we left, both sides,
-
3:15 - 3:17they were crying because
they did not want to leave. -
3:17 - 3:21Three years later, those
relationships still exist. -
3:21 - 3:24Imagine with me
if the one billion people -
3:24 - 3:28who travel internationally
every year travel like this, -
3:28 - 3:31not being taken in the bus
from one side to another, -
3:31 - 3:33from one hotel to another,
-
3:33 - 3:37taking pictures from the windows
of their buses of people and cultures, -
3:37 - 3:40but actually connecting with people.
-
3:40 - 3:44You know, I remember having
a Muslim group from the U.K. -
3:44 - 3:47going to the house
of an Orthodox Jewish family, -
3:47 - 3:51and having their first Friday night
dinners, that Sabbath dinner, -
3:51 - 3:55and eating together hamin,
which is a Jewish food, a stew, -
3:55 - 3:58just having the connection
of realizing, after a while, -
3:58 - 4:01that a hundred years ago,
their families came out -
4:01 - 4:04of the same place in Northern Africa.
-
4:04 - 4:07This is not a photo profile
for your Facebook. -
4:07 - 4:09This is not disaster tourism.
-
4:09 - 4:11This is the future of travel,
-
4:11 - 4:14and I invite you to join me to do that,
to change your travel. -
4:14 - 4:16We're doing it all over the world now,
-
4:16 - 4:19from Ireland to Iran to Turkey,
-
4:19 - 4:21and we see ourselves going
everywhere to change the world. -
4:21 - 4:23Thank you.
-
4:23 - 4:25(Applause)
