What happened when we paired up thousands of strangers to talk politics

  • Not Synced
    Now, this is Joanna.
  • Not Synced
Joanna works at a university in Poland,
  • Not Synced
and one Saturday morning at 3am,
  • Not Synced
she got up, packed her rucksack,
  • Not Synced
    and traveled more than
    a thousand kilometers
  • Not Synced
only to have a political argument
  • Not Synced
    with a stranger.
  • Not Synced
    And his name is Kristof,
  • Not Synced
and he's a customer manager from Germany,
and the two had never met before.
  • Not Synced
They only knew that they were
totally at odds over European politics,
  • Not Synced
    over migration, or the relationship
    to Russia or whatever.
  • Not Synced
And they were arguing for almost one day.
  • Not Synced
And after that, Joanna sent me
    a somewhat irritating email.
  • Not Synced
"That was really cool and I enjoyed
    every single minute of it!"
  • Not Synced
So these are Tom from the UK
    and Niels from Germany.
  • Not Synced
    They also were strangers,
  • Not Synced
    and they are both supporters
    of their local football team,
  • Not Synced
as you may imagine, Borussia Dortmund
    and Tottenham Hotspur.
  • Not Synced
And so they met at the very spot
    where football roots were invented,
  • Not Synced
    on some field in Cambridge,
  • Not Synced
and they didn't argue about football
  • Not Synced
    but about Brexit.
  • Not Synced
And after talking for many hours
    about this contentious topic,
  • Not Synced
they also sent a rather unexpected email.
  • Not Synced
"It was delightful and we both
    enjoyed it very much."
  • Not Synced
    So in Spring 2019,
  • Not Synced
    more than 17,000 Europeans
    from 33 countries
  • Not Synced
signed up to have a political argument.
  • Not Synced
Thousands crossed their borders to meet
a stranger with a different opinion,
  • Not Synced
and they were all part of a project
    called "Europe Talks."
  • Not Synced
    Now, talking about politics
  • Not Synced
    amongst people with different opinions
    has become really difficult,
  • Not Synced
    not only in Europe.
  • Not Synced
    So families are splitting,
friends no longer talk to each other,
  • Not Synced
    we stay in our bubbles.
  • Not Synced
    And these so-called
