Paul Harvey 1965 If I Were the Devil

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    If I were the devil...
  • 0:05 - 0:07
if I were the Prince of Darkness
  • 0:07 - 0:09
I'd want to engulf the whole world in darkness.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
And I'd have a third of it's real estate and 4/5 of its population
  • 0:13 - 0:15
but I wouldn't be happy until I had seized the ripest apple
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    on the tree, thee.
  • 0:18 - 0:23
So I'd set about however necessary to take over the United States.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
I'd subvert the churches first, I'd begin with a campaign of whispers.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
With the wisdom of a serpent I would whisper
  • 0:28 - 0:31
to you as I whispered to Eve, "Do as you please."
  • 0:32 - 0:34
To the young, I would whisper that, "The Bible is a myth."
  • 0:34 - 0:37
I would convince them that man created God
  • 0:37 - 0:38
instead of the other way around.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
I would confide that what's bad is good
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    and what's good is square.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
And the old, I would teach to pray, after me
  • 0:46 - 0:49
"Our Father, which art in Washington…"
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    And then I'd get organized.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
I'd educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting
  • 0:56 - 0:58
so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
I'd threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
I'd pedal narcotics to whom I could.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
I'd sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
I'd tranquilize the rest with pills.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
If I were the devil I'd soon have families
  • 1:11 - 1:14
that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves
  • 1:14 - 1:16
and nations at war with themselves
  • 1:16 - 1:20
until each in its turn was consumed.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
And with promises of higher ratings
  • 1:22 - 1:27
I'd have mesmerizing media fanning the flames.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
If I were the devil I would encourage schools
  • 1:29 - 1:31
to refine young intellects, but neglect
  • 1:31 - 1:33
to discipline emotions, just let those run wild
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    until before you knew it
  • 1:35 - 1:37
you'd have to have drug sniffing dogs
  • 1:37 - 1:40
and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
Within a decade I'd have prisons overflowing
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    I'd have judges promoting pornography.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
Soon I could evict God from the courthouse
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    then from the schoolhouse
  • 1:50 - 1:52
and then from the houses of Congress.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
And in His own churches I would substitute
  • 1:54 - 1:57
psychology for religion and deify science.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
I would lure priests and pastors
  • 1:59 - 2:03
into misusing boys and girls, and church money.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
If I were the devil I'd make the symbols of Easter an egg
  • 2:05 - 2:08
and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
If I were the devil I'd take from those who have
  • 2:11 - 2:14
and give to those wanted until I had killed
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    the incentive of the ambitious.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    And what'll you bet?
  • 2:18 - 2:22
I could get whole states to promote gambling
  • 2:22 - 2:24
as the way to get rich.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
I would caution against extremes and hard work
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    in Patriotism, in moral conduct.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    that swinging is more fun
  • 2:39 - 2:43
that what you see on TV is the way to be.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
And thus I could undress you in public
  • 2:46 - 2:49
and I could lure you into bed
  • 2:49 - 2:52
with diseases for which there is no cure.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
In other words, if I were the devil
  • 2:55 - 2:57
I'd just keep right on doing on what he's doing.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    Paul Harvey.
