Tennis Modern . How to serve 2017 – 7 Steps To Correct Serve
-
0:03 - 0:04Hey I'm Andy with tennis warehouse and
-
0:04 - 0:06today we're going to learn how to hit a
-
0:06 - 0:09serve. The service arguably the most
-
0:09 - 0:10important stroke and tennis it starts
-
0:10 - 0:13every point and when used correctly it
-
0:13 - 0:16can give you a tactical advantage in the
-
0:16 - 0:17point. I'm going to highlight the five
-
0:17 - 0:20key elements that every high-level serve
-
0:20 - 0:22should have. FIRST it's very important
-
0:22 - 0:24that you're serving with a continental
-
0:24 - 0:26grip. Many people when they start out
-
0:26 - 0:29playing tennis use their forehand grip
-
0:29 - 0:31to serve. This is called the frying pan
-
0:31 - 0:33grip and a pancake grip and people can
-
0:33 - 0:35produce some pretty effective serves
-
0:35 - 0:37with it but it's going to limit how good
-
0:37 - 0:39and consistent your serve can be. If you
-
0:39 - 0:40watch the pros every player is serving
-
0:40 - 0:42with a continental grip. The easiest way
-
0:42 - 0:45to find your continental grip is to take
-
0:45 - 0:47the racket in your opposite hand like so
-
0:47 - 0:49Take the V of your dominant hand and
-
0:49 - 0:52work it down the beam of the racket all
-
0:52 - 0:55the way down to the grip and that should
-
0:55 - 0:57be your continental grip. This should be
-
0:57 - 1:00the way that you would hold a hammer and
-
1:00 - 1:02the V of your hand should rest on the
-
1:02 - 1:04left bevel of the grip. This is the most
-
1:04 - 1:07universally used Griffin tennis. Next the
-
1:07 - 1:09tempo of your serve is very important
-
1:09 - 1:13you always want to think slow to fast.So
-
1:13 - 1:15when I'm starting my serve
-
1:15 - 1:17I want to start very calm and balanced
-
1:17 - 1:19and you want to start with a ritual that
-
1:19 - 1:21you can repeat every single time you
-
1:21 - 1:23serve and what that's going to do is
-
1:23 - 1:26help you get focused and balance before
-
1:26 - 1:27every server. For example I like to
-
1:27 - 1:29bounce the ball seven times before my
-
1:29 - 1:31first serve and three times before my
-
1:31 - 1:34second serve and I want to do so with my
-
1:34 - 1:37feet lined up so that. If I were to draw
-
1:37 - 1:40a line from my back foot and some to my
-
1:40 - 1:42front foot it would point at the net
-
1:42 - 1:44post in front of me. So remember think
-
1:44 - 1:49slow to fast come still and balanced at
-
1:49 - 1:52the beginning and fast and explosive up
-
1:52 - 1:53into your contact.
-
1:53 - 1:56NEXT I want to get to the most important
-
1:56 - 1:58aspect of the serve which is the toss a
-
1:58 - 2:00consistent toss will lead to a
-
2:00 - 2:02consistent serve while an inconsistent
-
2:02 - 2:05toss will lead to an inconsistent serve.
-
2:05 - 2:07Start with your arms straight doesn't
-
2:07 - 2:09have to be locked out like that, but just
-
2:09 - 2:11nice and comfortable there with the ball
-
2:11 - 2:13in the tips of your fingers and what
-
2:13 - 2:15you're going to want to do.
-
2:15 - 2:16You just place the ball up above you.
-
2:16 - 2:18Instead of flinging it out of your hands
-
2:18 - 2:20You don't want that ball to spin as
-
2:20 - 2:22you're tossing. Toss location is also
-
2:22 - 2:24extremely important for your servant may
-
2:24 - 2:26vary slightly from Player to Player also
-
2:26 - 2:28depending on what type of server that
-
2:28 - 2:30you're hitting. But a general rule of
-
2:30 - 2:33thumb if you picture me and the position
-
2:33 - 2:35of the toss is like a clock you want to
-
2:35 - 2:38be tossing right at twelve o'clock
-
2:38 - 2:39position directly above you.
-
2:39 - 2:41Some people may move their serves their
-
2:41 - 2:43toss slightly to the right for a flat or
-
2:43 - 2:46a slice serve or slightly to the left
-
2:46 - 2:48for a kick serve but generally you want
-
2:48 - 2:50to be right around that twelve o'clock
-
2:50 - 2:52range. Your toss height should be not too
-
2:52 - 2:54high but not too low. Your top should be
-
2:54 - 2:57high enough to allow you to not have to
-
2:57 - 3:00rush your motion and get fully extended
-
3:00 - 3:03for your contact position yet you don't
-
3:03 - 3:04want it too high to where the ball is
-
3:04 - 3:07falling more than a foot or two from the
-
3:07 - 3:09apex of the toss and be higher than that
-
3:09 - 3:11when the ball drops a few feet from its
-
3:11 - 3:14Highest point your toss may be too high
-
3:14 - 3:16After you toss the ball you're going to
-
3:16 - 3:18want to move yourself into a loading
-
3:18 - 3:20position getting ready to explode up
-
3:20 - 3:22into the ball and it's important here
-
3:22 - 3:24that we remember our slow to fast tempo
-
3:24 - 3:26we want our energy to build during our
-
3:26 - 3:29motion as you do so your left arm should
-
3:29 - 3:32still be fully extended from your toss
-
3:32 - 3:33that's going to help keep your left side
-
3:33 - 3:36of your body up and your knees should be
-
3:36 - 3:38bent ready to explode up into the ball
-
3:38 - 3:40with your legs they can they can be one
-
3:40 - 3:42of two ways here to do it either way is
-
3:42 - 3:44right or wrong they're both widely used
-
3:44 - 3:46on the Pro Tour you've got guys like
-
3:46 - 3:49Roger Federer are Pete Sampras that use
-
3:49 - 3:51a platform stance where their feet are
-
3:51 - 3:53still apart their weight is evenly
-
3:53 - 3:55balanced between their two feet and
-
3:55 - 3:57they're going to jump up into the ball
-
3:57 - 3:59without moving their feet. Other guys
-
3:59 - 4:01like John Isner, Rafa Nadal, myself
-
4:01 - 4:03actually use more of a step-up stand so.
-
4:03 - 4:05I may start a little bit wider at first
-
4:05 - 4:07and then step up into my loading
-
4:07 - 4:09position now my feet are together my
-
4:09 - 4:12knees are together once again my weight
-
4:12 - 4:14is balanced evenly between the two legs
-
4:14 - 4:16and I'm ready to explode up into the
-
4:16 - 4:18ball so your knees are nice and bent
-
4:18 - 4:20you're ready to explode up into the ball
-
4:20 - 4:22Your left arm is extended and now the
-
4:22 - 4:24position of your racket is extremely
-
4:24 - 4:25crucial here
-
4:25 - 4:26so with that let
-
4:26 - 4:28storm up you want your racket to be
-
4:28 - 4:30really close to your face right here and
-
4:30 - 4:32what that's going to do you want to get
-
4:32 - 4:34your kind of in a position where you
-
4:34 - 4:36would throw a baseball or football. If
-
4:36 - 4:37you didn't have a racket in your hand
-
4:37 - 4:39kind of right by your face there and
-
4:39 - 4:41when that's going to allow you to do is
-
4:41 - 4:43really generate lots of racket head
-
4:43 - 4:45speed up into the ball.The most commonly
-
4:45 - 4:47taught mistake here is to get into that
-
4:47 - 4:49loading position with your racket
-
4:49 - 4:52scratching. Your back okay and you'll
-
4:52 - 4:54eventually get to that point but you
-
4:54 - 4:56don't want to load to there because now
-
4:56 - 4:58you've got no momentum up into the ball
-
4:58 - 5:01and you can't generate racket head speed
-
5:01 - 5:03you want that racket right here so that
-
5:03 - 5:05as you explode up you're going to drop
-
5:05 - 5:07the racket and generate racket head
-
5:07 - 5:09speed up into your contact FINALLY we're
-
5:09 - 5:11ready to explode up into the ball for
-
5:11 - 5:13contact your in your loading position
-
5:13 - 5:15and now this is going to be the fastest
-
5:15 - 5:17part of your motion as you go up into
-
5:17 - 5:18the ball
-
5:18 - 5:19Your arms are going to exchange
-
5:19 - 5:21positions now so your left arm will drop
-
5:21 - 5:24into your chest your right arm should be
-
5:24 - 5:26loose and explosive your wrist should be
-
5:26 - 5:28very loose and right at your contact
-
5:28 - 5:30point at the top. You're going to want to
-
5:30 - 5:32get a nice wrist snap down into the
-
5:32 - 5:34court one thing that's also extremely
-
5:34 - 5:35important.
-
5:35 - 5:38You want to make sure your eyes are up
-
5:38 - 5:40at contact and you want to try to see
-
5:40 - 5:42the ball actually make contact with the
-
5:42 - 5:44strings. As you're at full extension with
-
5:44 - 5:46your arms there to reach up at contact
-
5:46 - 5:49your legs should explode up into the
-
5:49 - 5:51ball and into the court that's very
-
5:51 - 5:52important.
-
5:52 - 5:54You want to get your body going into the
-
5:54 - 5:56court as opposed to behind you. When you
-
5:56 - 5:58do so you're going to explode up land on
-
5:58 - 6:01that front leg there and your back leg
-
6:01 - 6:03will kick up behind you and that's going
-
6:03 - 6:04to kind of counterbalance you make sure
-
6:04 - 6:06I'm really balance from that point
-
6:06 - 6:08you're going to want to recover quickly
-
6:08 - 6:10and get back into your ready position as
-
6:10 - 6:12quick as you can for your next shot and
-
6:12 - 6:14that's the basics of the serve. Be sure
