now going through your mind like your -
0:33 - 0:36urge to flee your urged to defend yourself that internal debate about

0:36 - 0:40whether weeping angels are even real... and... well, wheres the cat?

0:40 - 0:44all that, it's just the result of those chemicals. Our brains and our nervous systems and
-
0:44 - 0:49the substances they're producing are always bathed in, are amazingly complex
-
0:49 - 0:52nuanced systems even though we're always talking about her mental activity as
-
0:52 - 0:56being somehow separate from all the biological stuff going on in our bodies in reality
-
0:56 - 1:01the moods ideas impulses that flashed through our minds are spurred
-
1:01 - 1:07by our biological condition as psychologies like to say everything psychological is biological.

1:07 - 1:08So one way to understand how your mind
-
1:08 - 1:12works it's a look at how the chemistry in your body influences how you think
-
1:12 - 1:15sense and feel about the world around you.

1:15 - 1:19To do that, we begin at the simplest level, the system with the smallest parts
-
1:19 - 1:22it's all about the neuron, baby.
-
1:31 - 1:35Neurons or nerve cells are the building blocks that comprise our nervous systems.
-
1:35 - 1:38Neurons share the same basic makeup as our other cells but they have
-
1:38 - 1:42electrochemical mojo that lets them transmit messages to each other
-
1:42 - 1:48your brain alone is made up of billions of neurons and to understand why we think or dream, or do anything.
-
1:48 - 1:51You gotta first understand how these little transmitters work.
-
1:51 - 1:55There's actually several different types of neurons in your body from ones that are less than a millimeter long in your brain,
-
1:55 - 1:58to ones that run the whole length of your leg.
-
1:58 - 2:07Yes, you have cells as long as your legs, which is nothing compared to the 150 feet the nerve cells of some dinosaurs had to be.
-
2:07 - 2:08I'm getting off-topic, sorry.

2:08 - 2:12No matter how big a nerve is, they all have the same three basic parts:
-
2:12 - 2:15The soma, dendrites and axon.
-
2:15 - 2:21The soma, or cell body, is basically the neurons' life support it contains all that necessary cell-action,
-
2:21 - 2:24like the nucleus, DNA, mitochondrial ribosomes and such.
-
2:24 - 2:27So, if the soma dies the whole neuron goes with it.
-
2:27 - 2:32The dendrites have bushy branch like the trees they're named after receive
messages, -
2:32 - 2:36and gossip from other cells. Their listeners whispering what they hear back to the soma.
-
2:36 - 2:44The Axon, is the talker and this long cable like extension transmits electrical impulses from the cell body out to other neurons, or glams or muscles.
-
2:44 - 2:49The dendrites are short and bushy the axe on fiber is
-
2:49 - 2:54long and depending on what happened near on it is is sometimes encased in a protective layer a fatty tissue.
-
2:54 - 3:01Called myelin sheath. It's almost like an insulated electrical wire the myelin sheaths speeds up the transmissions of messages,
-
3:01 - 3:08and the grades as it does with those affected with multiple sclerosis, those signals are degraded as well. Eventually leading to lack of muscle control.

3:09 - 3:14Neurons transmit signals either whenstimulated by sensory input or triggered by neighboring neurons.
-
3:14 - 3:18The dendrites pick up the signal and activate the neurons action potential,
-
3:18 - 3:23or firing impulse. That shoots anelectrical charge down the axe onto its terminals.

3:23 - 3:27and toward the neighboring neurons the contact point between neurons are called synapses.

3:27 - 3:37All those bushy little dendrites are decorated with synapse is that almost but don't quite tut the neighboring axon in the tiniest game, of I'm not touching of all time.

3:37 - 3:41They're less than a million permanent apart,
-
3:41 - 3:46and that microscopic cleft is called the syntactic gap. So with an action potential runs down to the end of an axon
-
3:46 - 3:51it activates the chemical messengers that jump that tiny syntactic gap.

3:51 - 3:56Flying like that little air kiss and landing on the receptor sites of the receiving neuron.
-
3:56 - 4:01Both messengers are neuro transmitters. Although neuro transmitters slide right into their intended receptors.
-
4:01 - 4:06Like a key into a lock. They don't stay bonded to the receiving neurons. They just sort of pop out.
-
4:06 - 4:09Having excited or inhibited the receiving neurons trigger.
-
4:09 - 4:12Then the actors immediately get reabsorbed by the neuron that released them in the first place.
-
4:13 - 4:17In a process called re-uptake. Kinda like, here you go. Oh, psyche!
-
4:17 - 4:22So neurons communicate with neuro transmitters. Which in turn cause motion and emotion.
-
4:22 - 4:28They help us move around make jazz hands, learn, feel, remember, stay alert, get sleepy .
-
4:28 - 4:31And pretty much do everything we do. Some of them just make you feel good.
-
4:31 - 4:35Like the endorphins we get floodedwith after running 10 miles,
-
4:35 - 4:37or falling in love, or eating a really good piece of pie.
-
4:37 - 4:41We got over a hundred different kinds of these brilliant neuro transmitters.
-
4:41 - 4:48Some are excitatory and others are inhibitory ,and all are good reminders that everythingpsychological is also biological.
-
4:48 - 4:54Excitatory neurotransmitters rev up the neuron increasing the the chances it will fire off an action potential.
-
4:54 - 4:58Nora Ephron's is probably familiar with that help control alertness and arousal.

4:58 - 5:03Glutamate is another involved in memory but and oversupply of it can wig out the brain,
-
5:03 - 5:11and cause seizures and migraines. Which is why some people are sensitive to all that MSG or mono sodium glutamate, and the rhyme.

5:11 - 5:17Inhibitory neurotransmitters on the other hand chill neurons out decreasing the
likelihood that the neuronal jump into action. -
5:17 - 5:21Gaba, gamma- amino butyric acid is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter,
-
5:21 - 5:24and you probably heard of serotonin which affects your mood in hunger, and sleep.

5:24 - 5:31Low amounts of serotonin are linked to depression and certain class of antidepressants help raise serotonin levels in the brain.

5:31 - 5:36Some neurotransmitters like acetylcholine and dopamine play both sides, and can both excite,
-
5:36 - 5:39or inhibit neurons depending on what type of percept as they encounter.
-
5:39 - 5:42Acetylcholine enables muscle action influences learning and memory.
-
5:42 - 5:47Alzheimer's patient experience and deterioration of their acetylcholine in producing neurons.
-
5:47 - 5:51Dopamine meanwhile is associated with learning movement in pleasurable emotions,
-
5:51 - 5:56and excessive amounts of it are linked to schizophrenia as well as addictive and impulsive behavior.

5:56 - 5:59So neuro transmitters are basically you nervous systems carriers,
-
5:59 - 6:03but they aren't the only chemical messengers delivering the new they've got some competition brewing.

6:03 - 6:08In the endocrine system and if you've been through puberty you know what I'm talking about.

6:08 - 6:15Hormones. Like neurotransmitters hormones act on the brain and indeed some of them are chemically identical to certain neurotransmitters.

6:15 - 6:23Hormones affect our moods, arousal, and circadian rhythm. They regulate metabolism monitor our immune system, signal growth,
-
6:23 - 6:26and help with sexual reproduction.

6:26 - 6:30You can say that most of them boil down to the basics: attraction, appetite, and aggression.

6:30 - 6:34Whereas neurons and synapses flick on and off sending messages with amazing speed.

6:34 - 6:40The endocrine system like to take its time delivering the body slow chemical communications through a set of glands that secrete hormones,
-
6:40 - 6:45into the bloodstream. Where their ferried to other tissues especially the brain.

6:45 - 6:48So well the nervous and endocrine systems are similar in that they both produce chemicals destined to hit upcertain receptors.

6:50 - 6:54they operate at very different speeds is like and the nervous system one think it undoubtedly
