How To Build a Tarantula Bioactive Enclosure

  • 0:00 - 0:01
today i'm going to be setting up a
  • 0:01 - 0:03
    bioactive terrestrial enclosure for my
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    tarantula
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    so let's get started
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    [Music]
  • 0:10 - 0:11
welcome to tarantula collective my name
  • 0:11 - 0:14
is richard and i got some rehousing to
  • 0:14 - 0:14
    do
  • 0:14 - 0:17
my theraposa apophysis uh also known as
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    the pinkfoot goliath bird eater
  • 0:19 - 0:21
has outgrown its enclosure and it's uh
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    it's time to upgrade
  • 0:22 - 0:24
now currently it's in a small enclosure
  • 0:24 - 0:26
but it is bioactive it's it's outgrown
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    it
  • 0:27 - 0:28
it's time to get it set up in something
  • 0:28 - 0:30
new but i've had a lot of people ask how
  • 0:30 - 0:32
i set up my bioactive enclosures and
  • 0:32 - 0:34
i got three or four different ways i do
  • 0:34 - 0:35
it so today i'm just going to show you
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    one of the ways
  • 0:36 - 0:37
it doesn't mean it's the best way it's
  • 0:37 - 0:39
just how i'm doing this one and
  • 0:39 - 0:41
you can check my past videos or future
  • 0:41 - 0:43
videos and see other methods that i use
  • 0:43 - 0:45
now not all tarantulas need bioactive
  • 0:45 - 0:47
enclosures it's mainly just your more
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    moisture dependent species
  • 0:48 - 0:51
therafosa is one genus that is moisture
  • 0:51 - 0:53
dependent and it seems the larger they
  • 0:53 - 0:54
get like the older they get
  • 0:54 - 0:56
the more important it is to have that
  • 0:56 - 0:58
moisture so that genus in particular i
  • 0:58 - 1:00
really prefer to keep it in bioactive
  • 1:00 - 1:02
enclosures so let's get to work get this
  • 1:02 - 1:04
set up and get this tarantula re-homed
  • 1:04 - 1:05
now for the most part i have
  • 1:05 - 1:08
everything that i need right here i'm
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    gonna be using this
  • 1:09 - 1:11
uh tarantula cribs enclosure that they
  • 1:11 - 1:13
sent to me for christmas i'm
  • 1:13 - 1:15
pretty excited about that it's uh it's a
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    terrestrial enclosure
  • 1:16 - 1:18
has this nice locking lid it's like a
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    magnetic i don't know there's one two
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    three four magnets
  • 1:21 - 1:23
strong magnets that will lock that into
  • 1:23 - 1:25
place so we're gonna be using this
  • 1:25 - 1:27
as the enclosure well almost dropped it
  • 1:27 - 1:28
and for the false bottom of the
  • 1:28 - 1:31
enclosure i'll be using this zoom med
  • 1:31 - 1:33
laboratories waterfall kit it's what i
  • 1:33 - 1:34
didn't use they sent me a whole bunch of
  • 1:34 - 1:36
stuff when i set up the bioactive
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    paludarium for my carabiner versacolor
  • 1:38 - 1:40
i used the waterfall feature in the
  • 1:40 - 1:42
enclosure but it's a paludarium so the
  • 1:42 - 1:44
bottom of the enclosure is just a water
  • 1:44 - 1:45
feature that fish are swimming in so i
  • 1:45 - 1:47
didn't need a false bottom but
  • 1:47 - 1:49
i'm gonna use that for this enclosure so
  • 1:49 - 1:50
the first step is gonna be cutting this
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    screen to
  • 1:51 - 1:53
fit the enclosure and how i'm gonna do
  • 1:53 - 1:54
that is i'm just going to set the
  • 1:54 - 1:55
enclosure on top of the screen kind of
  • 1:55 - 1:57
trace it out and cut out the rectangle
  • 1:57 - 2:10
    pretty easy
  • 2:13 - 2:13
    [Music]
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    [Applause]
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    [Music]
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    [Applause]
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    [Music]
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    [Applause]
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    [Music]
  • 2:22 - 2:23
all right so we got that done we're just
  • 2:23 - 2:27
going to make sure that it fits nicely
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    yeah i think that'll work that'll work
  • 2:29 - 2:31
nice now the first layer in a bioactive
  • 2:31 - 2:33
enclosure kind of needs to be the false
  • 2:33 - 2:33
    bottom
  • 2:33 - 2:35
and in this case i'll be using hydro
  • 2:35 - 2:36
balls but i've seen people use like
  • 2:36 - 2:38
plastic crating there's there's all kind
  • 2:38 - 2:40
of different things you can use but
  • 2:40 - 2:41
i have these hydra balls so that's what
  • 2:41 - 2:42
we're going to use today and it doesn't
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    need to be
  • 2:43 - 2:45
really deep i'm probably just going to
  • 2:45 - 2:47
do like a half an inch to an inch of
  • 2:47 - 2:48
hydra balls in this enclosure because
  • 2:48 - 2:50
this tarantula really likes to burrow so
  • 2:50 - 2:51
i'll make sure i give it plenty of depth
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    and substrate
  • 2:54 - 3:00
    [Music]
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    substrate
  • 3:04 - 3:16
    [Music]
  • 3:17 - 3:18
i put a little too much in there first
  • 3:18 - 3:20
so i cut it back a little bit but
  • 3:20 - 3:22
i think this is gonna look nice so next
  • 3:22 - 3:24
step is we will uh throw in this screen
  • 3:24 - 3:26
what this does is keep the substrate
  • 3:26 - 3:27
separate from the hydro ball so the
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    water can
  • 3:28 - 3:30
drain through the substrate get down
  • 3:30 - 3:32
there and then kind of like evaporate
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    and go back up
  • 3:33 - 3:35
it just keeps the substrate damp or you
  • 3:35 - 3:37
know plenty of moisture in it without
  • 3:37 - 3:38
just sitting in water where it would
  • 3:38 - 3:48
start to rot and just get nasty
  • 3:49 - 3:51
now i just need to add some substrate
  • 3:51 - 3:52
i'm going to be using jungle mix today
  • 3:52 - 3:54
it's one of my favorite substrates but
  • 3:54 - 3:56
you know you can use pretty much any
  • 3:56 - 3:58
substrate really except for cocoa fiber
  • 3:58 - 4:00
i wouldn't suggest that but creature
  • 4:00 - 4:00
    soil
  • 4:00 - 4:03
or jungle mix there's what's the other
  • 4:03 - 4:05
one rectus soil something like that
  • 4:05 - 4:06
there's all kinds of substrates out
  • 4:06 - 4:07
there that's kind of a mixture of a
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    bunch of stuff that
  • 4:08 - 4:11
would be beneficial justice frogs has
  • 4:11 - 4:13
some great bioactive substrates you can
  • 4:13 - 4:14
get some from the bio dude and some
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    bioactive substrates don't require a
  • 4:16 - 4:18
false bottom if i was using the biodudes
  • 4:18 - 4:20
tara arena or whatever it's called their
  • 4:20 - 4:22
tarantula substrate i would not be using
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    a false bottom but
  • 4:24 - 4:26
because i'm not using that i i'm going
  • 4:26 - 4:27
to be using some of this
  • 4:27 - 4:29
jungle mix i went ahead and opted for
  • 4:29 - 4:31
that false bottom but what i will do is
  • 4:31 - 4:33
mix a bunch of sphagnum moss in with the
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    jungle mix and
  • 4:34 - 4:35
i'll just kind of help it maintain some
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    of its moisture
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    [Music]
  • 4:41 - 4:42
now that i've got the sphagnum moss
  • 4:42 - 4:44
mixed in there i'm going to wet it down
  • 4:44 - 4:44
    some and
  • 4:44 - 4:47
i didn't fill the enclosure up as high
  • 4:47 - 4:48
as i normally would with substrate
  • 4:48 - 4:49
because i'm going to take some of the
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    substrate from its uh
  • 4:50 - 4:52
current enclosure and mix it in there as
  • 4:52 - 4:54
well since it's been living in this
  • 4:54 - 4:56
bioactive enclosure there's a whole lot
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    of microorganisms and you know
  • 4:57 - 4:59
this the soil itself the substrate
  • 4:59 - 5:02
itself has really kind of developed its
  • 5:02 - 5:03
own little ecosystem so i want to make
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    sure
  • 5:04 - 5:06
all those little microorganisms i can
  • 5:06 - 5:08
transplant into this enclosure as well
  • 5:08 - 5:09
of course there's also springtails and
  • 5:09 - 5:11
small little dwarf isopods and stuff
  • 5:11 - 5:13
like that that i probably want to carry
  • 5:13 - 5:15
over to this enclosure too and now we're
  • 5:15 - 5:17
going to transfer these plants over in
  • 5:17 - 5:18
here so i'm just going to set up exactly
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    where i want to hide
  • 5:19 - 5:21
and things like that and move the plants
  • 5:21 - 5:22
over and i mean it wouldn't be a
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    tarantula collective enclosure without a
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    skull
  • 5:26 - 5:27
this one's for you petco so now i need
  • 5:27 - 5:29
to get into the old enclosure pull out
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    the plants
  • 5:30 - 5:31
and move some of that substitute into
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    the new enclosure now this
  • 5:33 - 5:35
is a theraposa species like i said it's
  • 5:35 - 5:37
a goliath pink foot bird eater which has
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    some pretty serious
  • 5:38 - 5:41
urticating hairs now it's not necessary
  • 5:41 - 5:43
that you always wear gloves or long
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    sleeves or glasses whenever you're
  • 5:45 - 5:47
interacting with a theraposa but it's
  • 5:47 - 5:47
    not a bad
  • 5:47 - 5:50
idea what i'm going to be using are
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    these massive
  • 5:51 - 5:53
rubber gloves it's a little bit of an
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    overkill especially for just the
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    juvenile species but
  • 5:56 - 5:57
i got to do what i got to do but these
  • 5:57 - 5:59
are nice because they cover my entire
  • 5:59 - 5:59
    arm so
  • 5:59 - 6:01
even if it kicks some hair at me or i
  • 6:01 - 6:03
mix them up and throw them up in the air
  • 6:03 - 6:05
i don't have to worry about it like
  • 6:05 - 6:07
getting on my forearms which i enjoy
  • 6:07 - 6:08
because i've been haired by this species
  • 6:08 - 6:11
before and it is not fun
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    very itchy drives me crazy
  • 6:14 - 6:17
all right got the gloves on now just for
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    safety's sake
  • 6:19 - 6:22
put on some glasses but these glasses
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    are really dirty
  • 6:24 - 6:25
and the only reason to wear glasses i
  • 6:25 - 6:27
actually got an email from someone not
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    long ago that
  • 6:28 - 6:30
uh la ciadora perry abana had kicked
  • 6:30 - 6:31
some hairs up gotten her boyfriend's
  • 6:31 - 6:32
    face
  • 6:32 - 6:33
and they were afraid some of them got in
  • 6:33 - 6:35
the eyes so you know it's it's always
  • 6:35 - 6:35
    better to be
  • 6:35 - 6:38
safe than sorry i you know i don't think
  • 6:38 - 6:39
that this trash is gonna be kicking
  • 6:39 - 6:41
hairs at my face so i'm i'm not gonna
  • 6:41 - 6:42
wear them but i just wanted to show you
  • 6:42 - 6:45
that sometimes you may want to consider
  • 6:45 - 6:47
doing it especially with the theraphosa
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    species
  • 6:52 - 6:54
all right that plant was pretty well
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    rooted but
  • 6:56 - 6:58
i really like it so i'm gonna move it
  • 6:58 - 7:03
    over here
  • 7:03 - 7:13
    [Music]
  • 7:13 - 7:14
all right so we got the plants out of
  • 7:14 - 7:16
there now it's time to move the
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    tarantula so hopefully this goes
  • 7:18 - 7:19
    smoothly because i
  • 7:19 - 7:21
just destroyed its old enclosure and i'm
  • 7:21 - 7:32
    sure it's not very happy
  • 7:36 - 7:38
it's always amazing how big these
  • 7:38 - 7:40
tarantulas get i think they're one size
  • 7:40 - 7:41
and they end up being almost twice as
  • 7:41 - 7:43
big as i anticipated and i moved some of
  • 7:43 - 7:45
the substrate from its old enclosure
  • 7:45 - 7:46
    into its new enclosure uh
  • 7:46 - 7:48
not a whole lot maybe just like a
  • 7:48 - 7:50
handful or so but i can see that a lot
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    of springtails have transferred from
  • 7:52 - 7:54
that enclosure into this one but
  • 7:54 - 7:56
just to be safe i'm going to add a
  • 7:56 - 8:00
    little bit more
  • 8:10 - 8:12
something i like to put in my bioactive
  • 8:12 - 8:14
enclosures any time that i'm putting
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    springtails in there
  • 8:15 - 8:19
is it's the uh kook cuisine it's this
  • 8:19 - 8:20
    cleanup crew cuisine
  • 8:20 - 8:23
who's incusing from the josh's frogs
  • 8:23 - 8:24
essentially it gets damp and kind of
  • 8:24 - 8:26
grows some mold plenty of food
  • 8:26 - 8:28
for your isopods or mainly your
  • 8:28 - 8:29
springtails i'm just going to throw one
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    of those down in there
  • 8:30 - 8:32
and now we're going to water the plants
  • 8:32 - 8:42
    a little bit
  • 8:44 - 8:47
    [Music]
  • 8:47 - 8:51
yeah baby wonder if all my
  • 8:51 - 8:53
bad decisions get accounted in the
  • 8:53 - 8:55
    algorithms no statistician could
  • 8:55 - 8:57
dissuade me from my bigger vision
  • 8:57 - 8:59
i know my occupation's quite an unlikely
  • 8:59 - 9:01
place in this world to occupy
  • 9:01 - 9:03
and talk about upon a daily basis our
  • 9:03 - 9:05
    information is predetermined by some
  • 9:05 - 9:06
    biased business
  • 9:06 - 9:08
we island sermon the silicon that push
  • 9:08 - 9:10
our lovely neighbors i'm done with paper
  • 9:10 - 9:12
chasing think i'm on the bigger banquets
  • 9:12 - 9:14
miss that full circle new wave energy on
  • 9:14 - 9:17
a tuesday turn a blue day to a bright
  • 9:17 - 9:19
you yellow with a smoothie in here extra
  • 9:19 - 9:23
fruit hey the brand you can't move me
  • 9:23 - 9:35
    [Music]
  • 9:35 - 9:38
if i know one thing the truth is home
  • 9:38 - 9:40
even if it's a tough thing to swallow an
  • 9:40 - 9:42
even harder thing to hold and truly know
  • 9:42 - 9:44
without a doubt while on the globe
  • 9:44 - 9:46
even though all right and that's pretty
  • 9:46 - 9:47
much it i want to say thanks to
  • 9:47 - 9:49
tarantula cribs for sending me out this
  • 9:49 - 9:51
awesome enclosure and the skull and hide
  • 9:51 - 9:52
pretty much everything else i used
  • 9:52 - 9:54
awesome christmas present if you want to
  • 9:54 - 9:55
see more videos on my bioactive
