Mayo Clinic Minute: Flu during a pandemic

  • 0:00 - 0:04
Dr. Priya Sampathkumar: Most places, flu
    starts circulating by November, December.
  • 0:04 - 0:09
    So it's recommended that everyone
complete their flu vaccine by October.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
Jason Howland: Flu cases were low in 2020,
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    and health experts attribute that
    to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 0:14 - 0:18
and the preventive measures put in place
to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    Dr. PS: We're afraid that
    in a lot of places,
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    masking ...
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    recommendations being relaxed,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
that flu will spread more easily.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
And the fact that no one had flu last year
  • 0:30 - 0:33
means there's a lot more people
    who are vulnerable this year.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    JH: Flu and COVID-19
    are caused by respiratory viruses
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    and have similar symptoms.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
Dr. PS: It's very, very hard,
almost impossible to distinguish the two
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    just based on symptoms.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
Some cases of COVID can be very mild,
    present exactly like the flu.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
Some cases of flu can be very severe,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    and present like COVID.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
So really, the only way to know for sure
when you have a respiratory illness
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    is to get tested.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
JH: If you haven't been vaccinated
    for COVID-19 yet,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
or need a third dose or a booster,
  • 1:03 - 1:07
you can get your flu shot
and COVID vaccination at the same time.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    Dr. PS: It's perfectly safe
to get both at the same time.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
JH: For the Mayo Clinic News Network,
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    I'm Jason Howland.
