Masturbation myths | Teesha Morgan | TEDxStanleyPark

  • 0:14 - 0:21
Did you know that spicy foods
    actually increase your sex drive?
  • 0:21 - 0:23
That they wake up your libido
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    and actually cause you
to become more lustful as a result?
  • 0:29 - 0:33
And did you know that if you are a man
    and you masturbate enough,
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    you can actually become infertile?
  • 0:37 - 0:41
Not only that, but it can cause
    a slow degenerative condition
  • 0:41 - 0:46
that not only affects the man
but any offspring that he has as well.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    And did you know
    that too much self-loving
  • 0:51 - 0:55
can actually cause you to grow hair
on the palms of your hands?
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    (Laughter)
  • 0:57 - 0:59
Everyone will know what you do
    with your spare time.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    (Laughter)
  • 1:04 - 1:07
OK, everything I just told you was a lie.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    (Cheering)
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    Thank God!
  • 1:12 - 1:17
But it was not that long ago
when people used to believe these things.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    And many still do.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
So today I am talking to you
    about masturbation myths.
  • 1:23 - 1:28
So we can uncover some of today's
    most perpetuated falsehoods
  • 1:28 - 1:30
and unearth some from the past
  • 1:30 - 1:34
that have actually come to shape
    our present-day reality.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    For example -
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    unsweetened Kellogg's cornflakes
  • 1:39 - 1:43
were developed by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
See, he was an anti-masturbation crusader.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    He believed, as did
    many people at the time,
  • 1:49 - 1:54
that spicy foods led to lust,
    and lust led to masturbation,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    and masturbation led
to a whole host of horrible things.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    So, he developed this diet
    that was bland in flavour
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    to hopefully decrease
    the chances of masturbation.
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    (Laughter)
  • 2:06 - 2:10
It was actually his brother Will
that added sugar to the flakes
  • 2:10 - 2:14
and marketed them as a breakfast cereal
    before they took off.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    The Graham Cracker
    actually has a similar past.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    Sylvester Graham was a minister
    and anti-masturbation crusader,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    and he developed
    the Graham Cracker, as well,
  • 2:25 - 2:29
as part of a bland diet
    in order to decrease masturbation.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
If he only knew what we did with S'mores.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    (Laughter)
  • 2:35 - 2:37
Now, it wasn't just these two men
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    campaigning against
    the evils of masturbation.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
In fact, most health care professionals
at the time, and health manuals,
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    believed the same thing.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
So, now it is easy for us
    to snicker at this
  • 2:48 - 2:52
and think how naive and ignorant
    these people must have been
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    to believe such silly things.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    Because of course,
we have evolved leaps and bounds
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    out of our grandparents' generation
    of sexual shaming.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    We know our facts.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
I mean, we are part of movements
    like legalising gay marriage,
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    and improving our sex education
    in our school systems,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    and increasing our 'clitoracy'
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    through things like
    'The Vagina Monologues'.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    (Laughter)
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    We know our facts.
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    Or do we?
  • 3:21 - 3:24
There is actually still a lot of falsehood
    around masturbation today.
  • 3:25 - 3:26
You see, as a sex therapist,
  • 3:26 - 3:30
I get to meet and talk
with a whole host of different people.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
It is actually quite a unique opportunity
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    because people come to me
  • 3:34 - 3:37
and they tell me their innermost
    thoughts and feelings,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    their desires, their fears,
    their anxieties, their wishes -
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    everything.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
    And over time,
    you start to notice patterns.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    So, for example:
  • 3:48 - 3:52
Women will often come to me because
they have not been able to have an orgasm.
  • 3:52 - 3:57
    Now, being preorgasmic could stem
from a whole host of different things,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
but one trend I often see
  • 3:59 - 4:03
is that many women still feel
    so much shame around self-pleasuring,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    around masturbation,
that they do not do it.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    Therefore, they're
    relying on their partner
  • 4:07 - 4:10
as their only means to orgasm attainment.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
But they have no roadmap for their body.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
With men, I often see a different trend.
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    Where maybe -
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    (Laughter)
  • 4:19 - 4:20
stay with me on this -
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    (Laughter)
  • 4:21 - 4:24
maybe they have relied on masturbation
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    as their sole means
for orgasm attainment for so long
  • 4:27 - 4:30
that this has created adverse patterns.
  • 4:30 - 4:34
    Now, regardless if the client
is a male or a female,
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    looking at the issues
    surrounding masturbation
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    and how that ties
    to the presenting sexual issue
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    is extremely important to recognize.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
So today, I thought we'd address
    masturbation myths,
  • 4:47 - 4:52
as our mistaken beliefs will have a
    trickle-down effect on future generations
  • 4:52 - 4:56
    and contribute to many
sexuality based issues that I see today.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    So, let's do a little fact-or-fiction
with our favourite pastime, shall we?
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    Fact or fiction?
  • 5:05 - 5:10
    Women who rely on vibrators
    or toys to masturbate
  • 5:10 - 5:14
will not be able to have an orgasm
    with her partner during sex.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
They will become dependent on it.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    That is fiction, yes.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    So,
  • 5:25 - 5:31
some women do like more intense,
direct stimulation on the clitoral hood,
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    which a vibrator will provide
more so than a penis, yes,
  • 5:35 - 5:40
but that does not cause an inability
to reach orgasm by other means.
  • 5:40 - 5:44
In fact, research shows that women
who take their time to self-explore
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    and learn about their body
    through masturbation
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    are more likely to attain
    an orgasm with a partner
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    than those who do not.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    Alright, fact or fiction?
  • 5:55 - 5:59
    Those in dating relationships
    are more likely to masturbate
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    than those who are single.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    That is a fact.
  • 6:05 - 6:09
So, those in relationships are more likely
or just as likely to masturbate
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    than those who are single.
  • 6:11 - 6:16
Not only that, but homosexual behavior
is associated with a higher degree,
  • 6:16 - 6:18
or a higher frequency of masturbation.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    Men masturbate more than women,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
older people less than younger people,
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    African-Americans less than other groups,
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    non-religious more so than Christians,
  • 6:28 - 6:31
and the more educated you are,
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    the more likely it is
    that you will masturbate.
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    Fact or fiction?
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    I think she's reading
    Fifty Shades of Grey.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    (Laughter)
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    Women - fact.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    (Laughter)
  • 6:51 - 6:55
    Women generally masturbate by inserting
    objects into the vagina;
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    therefore, simulating penetrative sex.
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    That was a quick one.
  • 7:01 - 7:02
    (Laughter)
  • 7:02 - 7:03
    Fiction, yes.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
Some women do masturbate in this fashion,
  • 7:06 - 7:08
and that is fine and completely normal.
  • 7:08 - 7:11
However, it is far more likely
    for women to masturbate
  • 7:11 - 7:15
    by using clitoral stimulation,
or the stimulation of the clitoral hood.
  • 7:15 - 7:18
    The clitoris is actually
a very interesting little body part.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
It is not merely a little button
    that's hidden away,
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    you know, we say,
look for the little man in the canoe.
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    (Laughter)
  • 7:29 - 7:33
It is actually a fairly large
    internal organ,
  • 7:33 - 7:37
and it is the only body part
    that exists solely for pleasure.
  • 7:38 - 7:42
The clitoris is estimated to be
between 9 and 12 centimeters long
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    and 6 centimeters wide.
  • 7:47 - 7:48
    Fact or fiction?
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    Early childhood masturbation is abnormal
  • 7:51 - 7:55
and may mean that your child
    is hypersexual.
  • 7:56 - 7:57
    Well done.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    Fiction.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
So, children learn very early on
    what feels good
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    when they touch their bodies,
    both male and female.
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    So, early childhood masturbation,
    well before puberty,
  • 8:08 - 8:12
    even into infancy,
    is actually quite normal.
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    (Laughter)
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    This man looks very worried.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    (Laughter)
  • 8:18 - 8:19
    Fact or fiction?
  • 8:19 - 8:24
    Too much masturbation
    can cause adverse health risks.
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    That is fiction.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
So, the only health risk associated
    with too much masturbation
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    would be allergic reactions
    due to lubricants,
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    infections due to unwashed toys,
  • 8:37 - 8:40
or just skin irritations in general.
  • 8:40 - 8:44
    Masturbation is actually
the ultimate form of safe sex
  • 8:44 - 8:45
    and masturbation -
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    (Laughter)
  • 8:49 - 8:50
    fact! -
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    (Laughter)
  • 8:53 - 8:55
    masturbation resulting in orgasm
  • 8:55 - 9:00
    actually carries with it
a plethora of positive health benefits.
  • 9:00 - 9:05
    It alleviates headaches,
it decreases stress, it is a sleep aid,
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    and it actually improves
    your immune functioning.
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    And women who masturbate
    during their period
  • 9:11 - 9:14
    can actually alleviate menstrual cramps.
  • 9:14 - 9:18
    It is estimated that about
95% of men and 89% of women
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    have masturbated
at some time in their life.
  • 9:21 - 9:25
    So, masturbating,
for both sexes, every day even,
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    is normal and healthy.
  • 9:27 - 9:31
So, the only adverse health risk
that might be associated with it
  • 9:31 - 9:34
is if you are masturbating so much
  • 9:34 - 9:37
that you stop going to work, let's say,
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    (Laughter)
  • 9:39 - 9:43
or it is impeding your daily functioning
    and social responsibilities,
  • 9:43 - 9:45
then it may be an issue -
  • 9:45 - 9:47
and you should come and see me.
  • 9:47 - 9:50
    (Laughter)
  • 9:50 - 9:51
    Fact or fiction?
  • 9:52 - 9:57
    Masturbation will not
    impede your stamina
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    or affect your performance
  • 9:59 - 10:02
before a big game or workout.
  • 10:04 - 10:05
    That is a fact.
  • 10:05 - 10:06
    So as I already said,
  • 10:06 - 10:10
masturbation carries with it a plethora
    of positive health benefits,
  • 10:10 - 10:14
so it actually may be beneficial to you
    rather than harmful.
  • 10:14 - 10:17
    Again, the only thing
    that could cause you problems
  • 10:17 - 10:20
    is if you are masturbating
    to the point of exhaustion.
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    (Laughter)
  • 10:22 - 10:24
But then, that would be true
    for any activity
  • 10:24 - 10:28
    where you are repeatedly using
the same muscles over and over again.
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    Alright, last one.
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    (Laughter)
  • 10:35 - 10:38
Now, this is a very common one I get.
  • 10:38 - 10:39
    Fact or fiction?
  • 10:39 - 10:45
    Masturbation causes premature ejaculation
    and erectile disfunction.
  • 10:46 - 10:48
You are all quieter on this one, I see.
  • 10:48 - 10:49
    (Laughter)
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    That is fiction.
  • 10:51 - 10:55
Now, this is a very complicated issue.
  • 10:55 - 11:00
So, the general act of masturbation
    does not cause erectile dysfunction;
  • 11:00 - 11:05
however, it may be helpful to think of it
in terms of a sports analogy.
  • 11:05 - 11:08
    So, let's say you are
    a professional athlete.
  • 11:09 - 11:13
During practice, you are sloughing off,
you are not trying hard during the drills,
  • 11:14 - 11:16
just not being an overall good player.
  • 11:16 - 11:19
    Now, when you get
    into a game-time situation,
  • 11:19 - 11:21
you are not going to play like a pro.
  • 11:21 - 11:22
    Why?
  • 11:22 - 11:25
Because you practice like you play.
  • 11:25 - 11:27
    So, you have to think
of masturbation in the same way.
  • 11:27 - 11:31
    Masturbation is the practice;
    partnered sex is the play.
  • 11:32 - 11:33
    So, for example.
  • 11:33 - 11:36
    Let's say, as a man,
    every single time you masturbate,
  • 11:36 - 11:40
you only give yourself a few minutes
    from first touch to ejaculation.
  • 11:41 - 11:44
    That may condition you
    to those few minutes.
  • 11:44 - 11:47
So, when you are with a partner
and you want to last longer,
  • 11:47 - 11:50
that may create problems for you.
  • 11:50 - 11:54
    Or let's say, you watch
the same type of visual stimuli,
  • 11:54 - 11:57
    let's say foot-fetish
    pornography, for instance.
  • 11:57 - 12:00
And then you are with a partner
    who hates their feet,
  • 12:00 - 12:02
does not want you anywhere near them.
  • 12:02 - 12:07
    That could create psychological
    arousal problems for you.
  • 12:07 - 12:10
So now, again, I am not saying
    it's a cause and effect.
  • 12:10 - 12:15
What I am stressing is the importance
of making your practice and your play
  • 12:15 - 12:16
    as similar as possible,
  • 12:16 - 12:19
    just like anything in life
that you want to be good at.
  • 12:20 - 12:22
So now, I can stand up here
  • 12:22 - 12:25
    and do the fact
    versus fiction battle all day,
  • 12:26 - 12:31
but perhaps the catalyst for change
    isn't just in the education
  • 12:31 - 12:33
but on a shift in perspective.
  • 12:35 - 12:36
    Now,
  • 12:36 - 12:39
    there is few people
in North America, today at least,
  • 12:39 - 12:41
    campaigning against
    the evils of masturbation
  • 12:41 - 12:44
    like Kellogg and Sylvester
    Graham used to do;
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    however, there is still
a lot of negativity around this one word
  • 12:47 - 12:51
    or this one behavior
that we have in our society today.
  • 12:52 - 12:56
So, if we think of all this negativity
    around this one thing,
  • 12:56 - 13:01
how do we break free of this
    perpetual cycle of fear-based myths?
  • 13:01 - 13:03
    We just keep creating more.
  • 13:04 - 13:07
I mean, the Roman Catholic Church
still holds that masturbation is sinful,
  • 13:07 - 13:09
so many Catholics may not masturbate
  • 13:09 - 13:12
    or feel guilty about masturbating
    because of that.
  • 13:13 - 13:16
    And many children inherit
    negative views around masturbation
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    from their parents.
  • 13:18 - 13:20
    Now, speaking to the guilt.
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    When I was younger,
  • 13:23 - 13:26
    I did something that
    I probably shouldn't have.
  • 13:27 - 13:30
    Now, I was really worried
    about getting caught.
  • 13:30 - 13:33
So, I pleaded with the cosmos.
  • 13:33 - 13:36
    I was like, "Please,
if I can get away with this,
  • 13:36 - 13:38
    just let me out unscathed,
  • 13:39 - 13:41
    I will not masturbate
    for an entire month.
  • 13:41 - 13:42
    Thirty days!
  • 13:42 - 13:44
    Thirty straight days."
  • 13:44 - 13:49
Now, I have no idea who I was pleading to,
I am not a religious person,
  • 13:49 - 13:51
but I think that in times where we feel
  • 13:51 - 13:54
like we do not have a lot of control
over our present or our future,
  • 13:54 - 13:57
we reach out to this cosmos.
  • 13:57 - 14:01
So now, I was lucky enough
    not to get caught,
  • 14:01 - 14:04
but when I look back on that now,
    what stands out for me
  • 14:04 - 14:07
    is that I viewed masturbation
as something that was so wrong
  • 14:07 - 14:09
or something that was so bad
  • 14:09 - 14:12
that I could use it as a bargaining tool.
  • 14:12 - 14:15
Almost like giving up smoking or drinking.
  • 14:15 - 14:19
Now, I was very blessed to be raised
in a household with amazing parents
  • 14:19 - 14:21
    who never taught me
    that masturbation was wrong
  • 14:21 - 14:25
or something I should be ashamed of
    or something that was sinful.
  • 14:25 - 14:27
And I as I have already said,
I was not a religious person,
  • 14:27 - 14:30
    so where was I getting
    these messages from?
  • 14:31 - 14:34
    I've come to realize,
it was from our society as a whole.
  • 14:35 - 14:36
    For example.
  • 14:36 - 14:40
If you google the term masturbation
    and look for synonyms,
  • 14:40 - 14:45
    words like self-abuse come up
    on almost every single page.
  • 14:45 - 14:48
    So, with all this negativity
    around this one word,
  • 14:48 - 14:50
how do we break free of this?
  • 14:50 - 14:55
I think we need new terminology
    for the word masturbation.
  • 14:55 - 14:57
Because changing the words we use
  • 14:57 - 15:00
    to describe people,
    places, events and ideas
  • 15:00 - 15:04
    are our first steps towards
    changing our perspectives on them.
  • 15:05 - 15:07
    Now, I am not saying
that masturbation is a bad word
  • 15:07 - 15:10
    or that using proper
    terminology is a bad thing;
  • 15:10 - 15:14
what I am saying is that
if we can be a little bit more positive
  • 15:14 - 15:16
in our adult, slang word of tongue,
  • 15:16 - 15:18
    in our day-to-day conversations,
  • 15:18 - 15:20
    this would be helpful.
  • 15:20 - 15:21
    For example.
  • 15:22 - 15:24
I just stayed in last night.
  • 15:24 - 15:27
    Played a little sexual solitaire.
    It was a good night.
  • 15:27 - 15:29
    (Laughter)
  • 15:30 - 15:32
Or, I asked Jenny to come out with me,
  • 15:32 - 15:35
    but she said she needed
    a little 'me time'.
  • 15:36 - 15:38
    A little self-relaxation therapy.
  • 15:38 - 15:39
    You know?
  • 15:39 - 15:42
    She was having herself
    a 'onesome' instead of a threesome -
  • 15:42 - 15:43
    sounded great.
  • 15:44 - 15:47
Now, I am not saying that this change
    is going to happen overnight,
  • 15:47 - 15:52
but what I am asking is for
each of you to do a little introspection,
  • 15:52 - 15:57
to look at the words that we use
    to describe masturbation
  • 15:57 - 16:00
    and our hang-ups surrounding it.
  • 16:00 - 16:04
Because if we can change this,
we can change our perspective on it,
  • 16:04 - 16:06
we will have a better society.
  • 16:06 - 16:11
    We will be better partners,
    better lovers, better communicators.
  • 16:11 - 16:15
And the sexual problems that I see daily
    will decrease dramatically.
  • 16:16 - 16:19
    So, I think now
    is the perfect time, tonight.
  • 16:20 - 16:22
    Go home,
  • 16:22 - 16:24
    set the mood,
  • 16:24 - 16:26
    turn the lights down low,
  • 16:27 - 16:29
and romance the hell out of yourself.
  • 16:29 - 16:31
    (Laughter)
  • 16:31 - 16:34
    (Applause)
