One 12 Year Old Boy Versus SeaWorld & Circuses

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Circuses, zoos
    and aquarium parks like SeaWorld
  • 0:03 - 0:07
    are destinations
most kids can’t wait to visit.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    But Dominic Geragi
    isn’t just any kid.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
An animal activist since the age of seven
    and co-president
  • 0:13 - 0:18
of the non-profit Animal Hero Kids,
    Dominic firmly stands against
  • 0:18 - 0:20
the use and abuse of animals
    for entertainment
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    and is really making waves
    in his community.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    Pun intended.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
Hi it’s Emily from Bite Size Vegan
and welcome to another vegan nugget.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
Today I’m excited to introduce you
    to Dominic Geragi.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
At the age of eight, Dominic had bullhooks
    banned in Margate, Florida,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
which I’ll let him talk about more.
  • 0:44 - 0:49
Now, with five years of animal activism
under his belt and at the ripe old age age of twelve,
  • 0:49 - 0:54
Dominic continues to fight for captive animals
    in the entertainment industry.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    Dominic shared what inspired him
to go vegan and become active.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    First I watched
    the documentary The Cove
  • 1:02 - 1:08
and that got me to protesting
    the Miami Seaquarium,
  • 1:08 - 1:13
which then caused me to become vegetarian.
And we started learning about more stuff.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
Then like a month after I became vegan.
  • 1:17 - 1:23
    I protest at Miami Seaquarium.
Five years now, we've been protesting there.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
We've had many different events happen there.
We've had a lot of cars turn around
  • 1:27 - 1:29
where the cars don't go in.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    Dominic hit the ground running
and spoke out against the cruel use of bullhooks,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    resulting in their banning.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
When I was eight years old I banned bullhooks
and electric prods from being used
  • 1:40 - 1:42
in the city of Margate in Florida.
  • 1:42 - 1:47
    I'm eight years old,
    I live in Boca Raton.
  • 1:47 - 1:52
I do not like Cole Brothers,
or any other circus that uses animals.
  • 1:52 - 1:58
    They use electrical rods,
    they electrocute the animals.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    They take bullhooks
    and beat the elephants.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    Little baby elephants
    are taken from their mothers
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    to be beaten.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    Please do what you can
    to help these animals.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    Kids have a voice.
    Thank you very much.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
    Bullhooks are used like batons
but they have a hook at the top of them
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and they beat the elephants with them.
  • 2:20 - 2:26
    And there's actually videos
of the trainers using the bullhook
  • 2:26 - 2:32
    to bring the elephants somewhere
where they had damage on their feet
  • 2:32 - 2:36
and other parts of their body.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
With other kids his age flocking
    to aquariums, zoos and circuses,
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    I asked Dominic
    why he protests against them.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    Sea World and Miami Seaquarium
    where they just take--
  • 2:47 - 2:52
and they put them into this cove
and they take half of them
  • 2:52 - 2:56
and put them into Sea World
    and the Seaquarium,
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    and they just put them
    into these tiny tanks.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    Some of them are illegal,
    like Lolita's.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    Lolita's is illegal,
it's way too small for her.
  • 3:06 - 3:15
And circuses are animals being taken,
tortured, and put into these places.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    And it's just really depressing
    there for them.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    Given this sad reality,
Dominic shared that there are alternatives
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    if kids and their families
    want to interact with animals.
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    Sanctuaries is a perfect place
to see animals, and take care of them.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    Where you can see them,
and if you want to volunteer
  • 3:33 - 3:40
    you can help them.
And basically help them to help their health.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
Dominic advocates other kids to get active
    in their communities and schools.
  • 3:44 - 3:49
He shares his thoughts on the power
of kid activism and how to get involved.
  • 3:49 - 3:55
I mean, people listen to kids more
than they do to adults nowadays.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
They think, when they see an adult sitting down,
    holding a sign:
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    "Oh, that person is crazy.",
    or something.
  • 4:01 - 4:06
But when they see a kid talking up there,
they think: "Wow, this is serious."
  • 4:06 - 4:10
and they actually get more of an impact.
  • 4:10 - 4:17
Spread awareness is probably the easiest part.
You can make your own leaflets
  • 4:17 - 4:21
and print them out and give them to people
    in your neighborhood.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
Or if it's easier just go to your school
    and talk about it,
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    and have kids spread awareness,
make presentations. That's what I did.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    So more people know
    about what is going on
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    with circuses
and Miami Seaquarium and Sea World
  • 4:37 - 4:42
    and all these bad places.
And on factory farms and all of those.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
Given that most kids his age
    aren’t out there
  • 4:44 - 4:47
fighting for the rights of animals,
    I asked Dominic
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    what motivated him
    to keep going.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    Seeing that animals
    have more rights nowadays,
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    you see more sanctuaries
    and all these other places.
  • 4:56 - 5:01
That people actually care about animals
makes me want to help even more
  • 5:01 - 5:07
and try to get it completely--
like no circuses and no Miami Seaquarium.
  • 5:07 - 5:12
I’ll leave you with some excerpts from Dominic’s
Animal Hero Kids State of the Union Address.
  • 5:12 - 5:19
I Dominic, Animal Hero Kid president,
pledge to speak out for all animals in need.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
    All of our voices together
    will stop animal abuse.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
We need to be the voices
    for the voiceless.
  • 5:26 - 5:31
    We, the Animal Hero Kids,
    promise to stop animal abuse
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    by not going to circuses
    that use animals for entertainment.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
Wild animals belong in the wild.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    We, the Animal Hero Kids,
    across the nation
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    will speak up
for the most abused animals of all:
  • 5:44 - 5:48
    factory farmed animals,
    like cows, chickens and pigs.
  • 5:48 - 5:52

  • 6:22 - 6:26
When I say rip his head off,
    rip his f--ing head off...
  • 6:26 - 6:28
It's very important that you do it.
  • 6:28 - 6:34
When he starts squirming too f--ing much,
both f--ing hands -- BOOM -- right under that chin!
  • 6:34 - 6:37
    Sink that hook into 'em.
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    When you hear that screaming,
then you know you got their attention!
