Compassion is Non-Local | Dharma Talk by Sr. Annabel Chân Đức

  • 0:10 - 0:21
most respected Thai dear Sangha wherever
  • 0:15 - 0:28
you are this wonderful to be connected
  • 0:21 - 0:28
with each other in many different places
  • 0:28 - 0:38
and now we want to come back to our
  • 0:32 - 0:43
breathing and really feel our connection
  • 0:38 - 0:49
with everyone else who is there to the
  • 0:43 - 0:53
edge of the Dharma talk and first of all
  • 0:49 - 0:58
in order to bring us together we are
  • 0:53 - 1:02
going to sing a song for you from the
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    New Hamlet in Plum Village
  • 1:06 - 2:57
    [Music]
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    [Music]
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    [Music]
  • 4:23 - 5:11
    [Music]
  • 5:14 - 5:23
    most respected Thay, dear Sangha
  • 5:18 - 5:28
everywhere, today is the 26th of April in
  • 5:23 - 5:33
the year 2020 and we are in the New
  • 5:28 - 5:44
Hamlet of Plum village sending out a
  • 5:33 - 5:51
Dharma talk online, we are very lucky that
  • 5:44 - 5:55
we have ways of communicating when we
  • 5:51 - 6:03
cannot be physically together, we have
  • 5:55 - 6:06
the telephone, we have the internet so
  • 6:03 - 6:10
that we can we can be together in a
  • 6:06 - 6:16
sense, we can see each other, we can hear
  • 6:10 - 6:22
each other, but before these things were
  • 6:16 - 6:28
invented people also had the need to be
  • 6:22 - 6:39
together with those who were far away
  • 6:28 - 6:44
and they were also able to do that, we
  • 6:39 - 6:49
have a way in which we can send our love
  • 6:44 - 6:56
there is a way in which we are connected
  • 6:49 - 7:02
and recently with the discovery of how
  • 6:56 - 7:04
how the nature of the particle the
  • 7:02 - 7:08
    sub-atomic particle
  • 7:04 - 7:15
    the scientists have discovered something
  • 7:08 - 7:20
called "non-local" it means in a sense we
  • 7:15 - 7:26
can be where we are not. In Plum Village
  • 7:20 - 7:32
on the day of mindfulness we often
  • 7:26 - 7:35
practice sending energy sending our love
  • 7:32 - 7:38
to people who are not there in Plum
  • 7:35 - 7:42
Village people who may be in the
  • 7:38 - 7:48
hospital, people who maybe have died
  • 7:42 - 7:53
already, we say their name we concentrate
  • 7:48 - 7:57
on our breathing we concentrate on the
  • 7:53 - 8:03
Bodhisattva of compassion who is in us
  • 7:57 - 8:08
and in our Sangha, and we use that energy
  • 8:03 - 8:13
in order to send it to the one whose
  • 8:08 - 8:18
name we have mentioned and we know that
  • 8:13 - 8:26
this is effective because I have heard
  • 8:18 - 8:32
people say at the very time when we said
  • 8:26 - 8:38
the name of the person and concentrated
  • 8:32 - 8:43
on the Bodhisattvas maybe someone who
  • 8:38 - 8:50
was dying and not at peace became
  • 8:43 - 8:54
peaceful while someone who was not dying
  • 8:50 - 8:57
but not at peace also became peaceful at
  • 8:54 - 9:03
that very moment, although there were
  • 8:57 - 9:07
hundreds of kilometers away, so we know
  • 9:03 - 9:11
both from science and from our own
  • 9:07 - 9:15
experience it is possible to send love
  • 9:11 - 9:19
    is possible to send peace
  • 9:15 - 9:23
and it's possible to send your smile to
  • 9:19 - 9:31
those who need it, you just need to say
  • 9:23 - 9:37
the name of the person and smile, and say
  • 9:31 - 9:41
dear whatever the name is I'm smiling
  • 9:37 - 9:51
for you this is the smile of compassion
  • 9:41 - 9:56
a smile of relaxation of peace but of
  • 9:51 - 9:59
course the important thing is that the
  • 9:56 - 10:01
one who is sending the love
  • 9:59 - 10:07
    this smile
  • 10:01 - 10:14
has to feel peace, has to be peace, and
  • 10:07 - 10:19
that is what is essential and all of us
  • 10:14 - 10:25
who have met the practice we know how to
  • 10:19 - 10:30
do that say that even you were in the
  • 10:25 - 10:36
same room as the person who is sick or
  • 10:30 - 10:41
dying it would be so important that you
  • 10:36 - 10:44
could feel peace, if you were afraid if
  • 10:41 - 10:48
you were crying at that time it would
  • 10:44 - 10:52
not help the person who needs your help
  • 10:48 - 11:00
and now though you cannot be in the same
  • 10:52 - 11:08
room still your peace can reach the
  • 11:00 - 11:09
person you wanted to reach you only need
  • 11:08 - 11:13
    to say their name
  • 11:09 - 11:18
you only need to feel the deep peace
  • 11:13 - 11:23
within you and to feel also that you are
  • 11:18 - 11:29
a Bodhisattva that means you are someone
  • 11:23 - 11:35
who has the mind of love, the mind
  • 11:29 - 11:40
awakening, and that Bodhisattva is in you
  • 11:35 - 11:44
is not someone outside of you, maybe in
  • 11:40 - 11:48
    the beginning the Bodhisattva you
  • 11:44 - 11:51
visualize outside of you, you visualize
  • 11:48 - 11:55
that great being who is full of
  • 11:51 - 12:00
    compassion and understanding as being
  • 11:55 - 12:04
outside of you, but as you go deeper into
  • 12:00 - 12:08
your concentration you will see the
  • 12:04 - 12:12
Bodhisattva is inside of you and another
  • 12:08 - 12:17
wonderful thing that you may see is that
  • 12:12 - 12:23
the Bodhisattva is inside of the person
  • 12:17 - 12:35
you are sending your energy to, the
  • 12:23 - 12:44
Bodhisattva is also non-local. Many of us
  • 12:35 - 12:44
now we find ourselves in confinement I
  • 12:45 - 12:58
don't know whether you feel that you are
  • 12:48 - 13:05
in a prison, you may do, when we first
  • 12:58 - 13:09
published in English the manual for
  • 13:05 - 13:17
novices with the code of discipline for
  • 13:09 - 13:21
novices somehow it got that book got
  • 13:17 - 13:21
inside the walls of a prison
  • 13:22 - 13:32
and a prisoner who had a very long
  • 13:26 - 13:40
sentence to serve read the book from
  • 13:32 - 13:45
cover to cover and said to himself I can
  • 13:40 - 13:49
become a novice in prison the prison can
  • 13:45 - 13:49
    become my monastery
  • 13:50 - 13:59
he shaved his head (you don't need to
  • 13:53 - 14:03
shave your head) he recited the novice
  • 13:59 - 14:10
precept for himself and he decided that
  • 14:03 - 14:14
he's become a novice and every day from
  • 14:10 - 14:19
the moment he woke up he could use the
  • 14:14 - 14:24
poems that the novice uses in order to
  • 14:19 - 14:28
be able to feel that he is really in a
  • 14:24 - 14:33
monastery, his prison has become his
  • 14:28 - 14:37
monastery, so this is something that we
  • 14:33 - 14:42
can, we can do we can make our
  • 14:37 - 14:47
environment a monastery, we can make our
  • 14:42 - 14:52
environment the house of the Buddha, the
  • 14:47 - 14:54
house of Jesus Christ, where we can enjoy
  • 14:52 - 14:58
    our breathing
  • 14:54 - 15:03
enjoy our mindful walking at every
  • 14:58 - 15:11
moment of the day... do you know the little
  • 15:03 - 15:17
poem waking up I smile I have 24
  • 15:11 - 15:20
brand-new hours I vow to live them fully
  • 15:17 - 15:23
looking at life with the eyes of love
  • 15:20 - 15:32
    someone is translating into Vietnamese
  • 15:23 - 15:40
and there's no word I in Vietnamese
  • 15:32 - 15:44
waking up smile, no I, 24 brand-new hours
  • 15:40 - 15:48
even if you don't feel like smiling it
  • 15:44 - 15:56
doesn't have to be I that smiles there
  • 15:48 - 16:01
just has to be a smile and the smile is
  • 15:56 - 16:07
wonderful the smile is the kind of mouth
  • 16:01 - 16:14
yoga, that can transform our state of
  • 16:07 - 16:19
mind when we smile we send a message to
  • 16:14 - 16:24
the nerves in our brain and the message
  • 16:19 - 16:24
    is something like it's alright
  • 16:24 - 16:32
everything is going to be okay
  • 16:28 - 16:37
so we need that smile very much at this
  • 16:32 - 16:42
time, so that we can take care of the
  • 16:37 - 16:48
present moment don't think there's an
  • 16:42 - 16:50
I who is smiling, when you smile your
  • 16:48 - 16:56
ancestors your mother and your father
  • 16:50 - 17:02
are smiling with you your children are
  • 16:56 - 17:05
smiling with you you inter-are that is
  • 17:02 - 17:10
the most wonderful teaching that we have
  • 17:05 - 17:18
it is the teaching that we need most in
  • 17:10 - 17:26
our time interbeing, I am NOT a separate
  • 17:18 - 17:32
self, but in order to be able to touch
  • 17:26 - 17:35
deeply the true nature of interbeing we
  • 17:32 - 17:41
have to be very much there in the
  • 17:35 - 17:45
present moment, not carried away by what
  • 17:41 - 17:45
    is happening around us
  • 17:48 - 17:56
some people say that in this time when
  • 17:54 - 18:00
    they are in good health
  • 17:56 - 18:05
when their loved ones are also in good
  • 18:00 - 18:10
    health when they have financial
  • 18:05 - 18:10
resources they have everything they need
  • 18:11 - 18:19
    they feel all the same
  • 18:14 - 18:25
they do not have the right to be happy
  • 18:19 - 18:25
when so many others are suffering
  • 18:30 - 18:39
but please remember that the world needs
  • 18:34 - 18:44
your happiness not the happiness of
  • 18:39 - 18:48
indulging your sense pleasures but the
  • 18:44 - 18:53
happiness that comes from being at peace
  • 18:48 - 18:59
from being able to accept, from being
  • 18:53 - 19:02
able to breathe and to walk, this
  • 18:59 - 19:07
happiness is very important for the
  • 19:02 - 19:11
world at this time and out of this
  • 19:07 - 19:19
happiness you can bring happiness to
  • 19:11 - 19:31
others you can console those who
  • 19:19 - 19:35
are mourning, who are afraid, so allow
  • 19:31 - 19:47
yourself to enjoy the true happiness as
  • 19:35 - 19:50
a gift to the world. So what we want to
  • 19:47 - 19:54
be, what we need to do to reestablish
  • 19:50 - 19:59
peace is to be able to come back to
  • 19:54 - 20:03
ourselves. We just sang for you being an
  • 19:59 - 20:08
island unto myself this means I have the
  • 20:03 - 20:13
capacity to come back to my body as it
  • 20:08 - 20:17
is in the present moment and your body
  • 20:13 - 20:20
may be in good shape your body may not
  • 20:17 - 20:25
    be in good shape
  • 20:20 - 20:29
but all the same it's doing its best and
  • 20:25 - 20:36
you can come back to it and when you
  • 20:29 - 20:36
    come back to your body
  • 20:36 - 20:45
you can help your body your body will
  • 20:41 - 20:50
feel happy when your mind comes back to
  • 20:45 - 20:55
it and that is why we say breathing in
  • 20:50 - 20:59
I'm aware of my whole body it's to be
  • 20:55 - 21:03
able to come back and for your mind rest
  • 20:59 - 21:10
peacefully in every cell of your body
  • 21:03 - 21:19
and in the Sutras they use the example of
  • 21:10 - 21:26
a turtle, a turtle has its four legs its
  • 21:19 - 21:31
head and its tail, and when the turtle
  • 21:26 - 21:36
needs to it will withdraw its legs its
  • 21:31 - 21:41
head and its tail under its shell, and
  • 21:36 - 21:46
there it is perfectly safe in its shell
  • 21:41 - 21:52
and many times in the Sutra we are
  • 21:46 - 22:00
reminded that we should pull in our six
  • 21:52 - 22:05
senses our eyes ears nose etc. bring them
  • 22:00 - 22:12
back on mind bring them back to the
  • 22:05 - 22:17
island of our self it's like on a windy
  • 22:12 - 22:20
day if you leave all the doors open
  • 22:17 - 22:26
everything in the room will be blown
  • 22:20 - 22:30
around it will be cold in the room so we
  • 22:26 - 22:35
need to close the doors we need to close
  • 22:30 - 22:39
the windows and although it's wonderful
  • 22:35 - 22:43
to have the Internet as a means of
  • 22:39 - 22:48
connection as a way of being with our
  • 22:43 - 22:52
Sangha it can also pull us out of ourself
  • 22:48 - 22:58
if we don't use it in the right way
  • 22:52 - 23:04
so we should be very careful how we use
  • 22:58 - 23:09
the Internet and we should always know
  • 23:04 - 23:16
how not to get lost in it, carried away
  • 23:09 - 23:21
by it, to come back into our shell and
  • 23:16 - 23:29
take care of our body and our mind as
  • 23:21 - 23:35
they are in the present moment. Now we
  • 23:29 - 23:35
enjoy the bell to do just that
  • 23:38 - 23:41
    [Music]
  • 24:19 - 24:31
You know that we are made up of what are
  • 24:24 - 24:38
called five skandhas: our body, our
  • 24:31 - 24:46
    feelings, perceptions, mental formations
  • 24:38 - 24:51
and consciousness. What this means is
  • 24:46 - 24:58
    that sometimes you identify yourself
  • 24:51 - 24:58
with your body you feel I am my body
  • 24:58 - 25:09
    sometimes you identify yourself with
  • 25:01 - 25:19
your feeling with your thinking with
  • 25:09 - 25:19
your emotions and with your consciousness
  • 25:19 - 25:26
all these things you can call myself
  • 25:31 - 25:40
because we have the practice of
  • 25:33 - 25:47
mindfulness we are able to take good
  • 25:40 - 25:52
care of these five rivers that are
  • 25:47 - 25:59
always flowing in us and changing at
  • 25:52 - 26:04
every moment so the first step is to
  • 25:59 - 26:09
come back to yourself and the second
  • 26:04 - 26:15
step is to take care of
  • 26:09 - 26:20
yourself and don't feel that that
  • 26:15 - 26:24
is selfish because taking care of
  • 26:20 - 26:28
yourself you are taking care of your
  • 26:24 - 26:29
ancestors who gave you who transmited
  • 26:28 - 26:32
    to you
  • 26:29 - 26:36
    your body and your mind
  • 26:32 - 26:40
you are taking care of your descendants
  • 26:36 - 26:48
to whom you have transmitted your body
  • 26:40 - 26:53
and your mind, and something else: you are
  • 26:48 - 26:59
taking care of Mother Earth because you
  • 26:53 - 27:00
are a child of the Earth and when you
  • 26:59 - 27:04
    take care of yourself
  • 27:00 - 27:15
it's no different from taking care of
  • 27:04 - 27:15
the earth. If you are environmentalist
  • 27:16 - 27:25
and you don't take care of your body you
  • 27:21 - 27:28
are not really taking care of the Earth
  • 27:25 - 27:32
if you do not call yourself an
  • 27:28 - 27:33
environmentalist but you take good care
  • 27:32 - 27:38
    of your body
  • 27:33 - 27:42
you are taking care of the Earth and you will
  • 27:38 - 27:45
love the Earth every time you walk on
  • 27:42 - 27:45
    the Earth
  • 27:47 - 27:58
    recently they've done, scientists have
  • 27:52 - 28:06
done much research on what kind of diet
  • 27:58 - 28:12
is best for the human being and they
  • 28:06 - 28:17
have discovered that the best diet for a
  • 28:12 - 28:22
human being is also the diet which will
  • 28:17 - 28:27
help preserve Mother Earth for the
  • 28:22 - 28:32
longest time that is a diet without
  • 28:27 - 28:35
animal products so we can see even from
  • 28:32 - 28:39
a scientific point of view that taking
  • 28:35 - 28:42
care of ourselves is taking care of the
  • 28:39 - 28:42
    Earth
  • 28:43 - 29:02
so we come back to our five skandhas and
  • 28:52 - 29:07
we see that our body needs our love and our
  • 29:02 - 29:13
care some people say that when they
  • 29:07 - 29:19
become sick they lose confidence in
  • 29:13 - 29:28
their body "I don't trust my body anymore"
  • 29:19 - 29:28
because it has become sick but in fact I
  • 29:31 - 29:41
have more trust in my body when I become
  • 29:35 - 29:48
sick because I have to go back to my
  • 29:41 - 29:50
body I have to watch it very carefully I
  • 29:48 - 29:55
have to be aware of it
  • 29:50 - 29:57
at every moment and I see how it's doing
  • 29:55 - 30:01
    its best
  • 29:57 - 30:05
I see how it's changing at every moment
  • 30:01 - 30:10
and it's trying to deal with the
  • 30:05 - 30:11
situation it has, so in fact my
  • 30:10 - 30:19
    confidence
  • 30:11 - 30:26
increases, so we come back and we take
  • 30:19 - 30:30
take care we are aware and they have
  • 30:26 - 30:36
    discovered that relaxation is a
  • 30:30 - 30:41
wonderful way of healing you don't
  • 30:36 - 30:47
really have to do very much except allow
  • 30:41 - 30:54
your body to relax allow your body to to
  • 30:47 - 30:54
get back its strength to rest
  • 30:59 - 31:07
sometimes when we get sick it's because our
  • 31:02 - 31:11
body is wanting us to do just that to
  • 31:07 - 31:20
relax and to rest so it want to give us
  • 31:11 - 31:28
it wants to give us that message it's
  • 31:20 - 31:34
also an opportunity for us to be able to
  • 31:28 - 31:41
look deeply at how we've been living our
  • 31:34 - 31:47
life and to make changes and now we have
  • 31:41 - 31:52
to go through this pandemic it's an
  • 31:47 - 31:58
opportunity for all of us to look deeply
  • 31:52 - 32:02
and to see how we've been living because
  • 31:58 - 32:05
surely what we are going through now has
  • 32:02 - 32:11
something to do with how we have lived
  • 32:05 - 32:16
as a human species and when it is over
  • 32:11 - 32:20
how are we going to be are we going to
  • 32:16 - 32:23
are we going to live differently
  • 32:20 - 32:28
otherwise we cannot avoid having more
  • 32:23 - 32:33
pandemics so in a way this is a an
  • 32:28 - 32:37
opportunity for us to wake up as a human
  • 32:33 - 32:43
species and to begin to do things
  • 32:37 - 32:46
differently and the first thing that we
  • 32:43 - 32:55
will learn is to come back to ourselves
  • 32:46 - 33:00
to rest to do less to have more time for
  • 32:55 - 33:08
our family now we are forced to do less
  • 33:00 - 33:11
we are forced to be with our family to
  • 33:08 - 33:17
    be with the earth
  • 33:11 - 33:26
take care of the earth these are all
  • 33:17 - 33:29
things we can do better so we come back
  • 33:26 - 33:34
first of all to our body and we take
  • 33:29 - 33:38
care and by coming back to our body
  • 33:34 - 33:45
understanding our body we understand how
  • 33:38 - 33:52
it's not a separate self entity it inter
  • 33:45 - 33:56
is first of all your body into is with
  • 33:52 - 34:01
the body of your mother and your father
  • 33:56 - 34:07
and then of your grandparents and after
  • 34:01 - 34:12
that your body into is with the forests
  • 34:07 - 34:18
the air that you breathe the food that
  • 34:12 - 34:18
you eat the water that you drink
  • 34:22 - 34:29
and after we have come back to our body
  • 34:25 - 34:32
and recognize its interbeing nature and
  • 34:29 - 34:39
we take better care of our body we
  • 34:32 - 34:43
recognize our feelings we really want to
  • 34:39 - 34:48
have pleasant feelings we don't want to
  • 34:43 - 34:51
have unpleasant feelings but for as long
  • 34:48 - 34:56
as there are pleasant feelings there
  • 34:51 - 35:00
will also be unpleasant feelings so we
  • 34:56 - 35:05
cannot hope one day there will be no
  • 35:00 - 35:10
    more unpleasant feeling once somebody
  • 35:05 - 35:13
said to me or you'd say if you don't
  • 35:10 - 35:16
have unpleasant feelings you can't have
  • 35:13 - 35:20
Pleasant feelings then I don't mind not
  • 35:16 - 35:23
having Pleasant feelings as long as I
  • 35:20 - 35:29
don't have to have unpleasant feelings
  • 35:23 - 35:31
but who is going to be God and organize
  • 35:29 - 35:42
the species that doesn't have feelings
  • 35:31 - 35:44
anymore that is not possible so we we
  • 35:42 - 35:49
know that unpleasant feelings are part
  • 35:44 - 35:58
of life and they need our care and our
  • 35:49 - 36:04
attention they don't need us to push
  • 35:58 - 36:07
them out of the door say you are in
  • 36:04 - 36:11
confinement you are sitting in your flat
  • 36:07 - 36:15
and in the flat there's a lot of
  • 36:11 - 36:21
unpleasant feelings what are you going
  • 36:15 - 36:25
to do open the window and shoo them out
  • 36:21 - 36:25
they won't they won't go away
  • 36:26 - 36:34
first of all unpleasant feelings need to
  • 36:30 - 36:39
    be heard then
  • 36:34 - 36:47
to be recognized they need to be
  • 36:39 - 36:47
acknowledged so you say my dear little
  • 36:49 - 36:59
    frustration I know you're there I accept
  • 36:58 - 37:10
    you
  • 36:59 - 37:12
oh my dear lack of energy someone said
  • 37:10 - 37:19
to me in the beginning of the
  • 37:12 - 37:25
confinement she had so much energy she
  • 37:19 - 37:30
wanted to do so many things to help like
  • 37:25 - 37:33
    organizing online Sangha practicing
  • 37:30 - 37:39
diligently every day listening to Dharma
  • 37:33 - 37:47
talks but after a while there's no more
  • 37:39 - 37:55
energy left no more desire to no more
  • 37:47 - 37:58
desire to listen to Dharma dogs so that
  • 37:55 - 38:03
    is something only normal because
  • 37:58 - 38:06
    everything is impermanent everything is
  • 38:03 - 38:11
in a wonderful state of change at every
  • 38:06 - 38:15
moment and sometimes we grasp hold of a
  • 38:11 - 38:20
moment and we want it to be like that
  • 38:15 - 38:29
forever but that is not the nature of
  • 38:20 - 38:33
how things are going to change so the
  • 38:29 - 38:37
first thing is to recognize that I don't
  • 38:33 - 38:41
    have energy I'm tired
  • 38:37 - 38:46
what is the point of fighting against it
  • 38:41 - 38:51
it'll only make me more tired
  • 38:46 - 38:58
so I accept like that but just as the
  • 38:51 - 39:05
moment when the wave is at its highest
  • 38:58 - 39:12
it can feel happy but also when it's at
  • 39:05 - 39:15
its worst it can also feel at peace
  • 39:12 - 39:21
because it knows that this is
  • 39:15 - 39:28
impermanent and it knows that whether it
  • 39:21 - 39:35
is high or whether it is low it is water
  • 39:28 - 39:41
all the same so when we are able to
  • 39:35 - 39:43
accept our tiredness our lack of energy
  • 39:41 - 39:50
    we just live with it
  • 39:43 - 39:55
follow our breathing and quite naturally
  • 39:50 - 39:59
it will change the energy will come back
  • 39:55 - 40:04
the peace will come back and then you
  • 39:59 - 40:08
can continue to do the work you want to
  • 40:04 - 40:08
    do to help others
  • 40:14 - 40:22
this has something to do with the
  • 40:17 - 40:30
practice of contentment the practice of
  • 40:22 - 40:37
knowing that I have inner maybe in your
  • 40:30 - 40:39
flat you have a plant which has green
  • 40:37 - 40:44
    leaves
  • 40:39 - 40:49
you cannot go outside and you cannot be
  • 40:44 - 40:55
in touch with nature outside but you can
  • 40:49 - 40:57
be in touch with the plant you might be
  • 40:55 - 41:01
able to touch it gently with your
  • 40:57 - 41:07
fingers you can look at it you can
  • 41:01 - 41:11
contemplate it you can see that the
  • 41:07 - 41:15
plant is coming from the whole universe
  • 41:11 - 41:22
it coming from the rain is coming from
  • 41:15 - 41:27
the earth and when you look at that leaf
  • 41:22 - 41:32
you can also see that you are a kind of
  • 41:27 - 41:38
leaf you also come from the sunshine and
  • 41:32 - 41:43
you come from the rain so you and the
  • 41:38 - 41:48
leaf you have a great deal in common and
  • 41:43 - 41:51
if you look even more deeply you will
  • 41:48 - 41:56
see that you in turn are because the
  • 41:51 - 41:59
plant is also breathing and helping to
  • 41:56 - 42:03
give more oxygen for you to breathe in
  • 41:59 - 42:09
and you breathe out the carbon dioxide
  • 42:03 - 42:15
for the plant so feeling our oneness
  • 42:09 - 42:20
with the with the universe feeling our
  • 42:15 - 42:24
oneness with nature it's something that
  • 42:20 - 42:26
the human being can do because the human
  • 42:24 - 42:34
being is just part of nature
  • 42:26 - 42:39
it's not something different so touching
  • 42:34 - 42:44
a leaf you also touch the non beginning
  • 42:39 - 42:49
and the non ending you see that the leaf
  • 42:44 - 42:53
does not really have a beginning the
  • 42:49 - 42:58
plant comes from a seed and the seed
  • 42:53 - 43:08
comes from the plant that that was there
  • 42:58 - 43:13
before it and in the same way you have
  • 43:08 - 43:20
no beginning and you have no end before
  • 43:13 - 43:26
we said that when you cannot see someone
  • 43:20 - 43:30
you cannot hear someone you think that
  • 43:26 - 43:36
they do not exist when someone you love
  • 43:30 - 43:41
dies you cannot see them you cannot hear
  • 43:36 - 43:47
them in Vietnamese when someone dies
  • 43:41 - 43:50
they say hiding behind the mountain but
  • 43:47 - 43:53
hiding behind the mountain doesn't mean
  • 43:50 - 43:59
to say that that person is not it's not
  • 43:53 - 44:03
there it just means to say oh we can't
  • 43:59 - 44:15
see you anymore we can't hear you
  • 44:03 - 44:20
anymore and we can experience that for
  • 44:15 - 44:27
ourself how to be in touch with someone
  • 44:20 - 44:32
who has who has died because that person
  • 44:27 - 44:35
is always there in our consciousness is
  • 44:32 - 44:35
    available to us
  • 44:37 - 44:48
and it may take a long time to really be
  • 44:45 - 44:54
in touch with your loved one who has
  • 44:48 - 44:59
died it may take years three years or
  • 44:54 - 45:05
four years so we do not need to be in a
  • 44:59 - 45:07
hurry in order to end our grief we
  • 45:05 - 45:12
should recognize that grief is something
  • 45:07 - 45:19
natural but all the time when we feel
  • 45:12 - 45:26
grief we are practicing to be able to go
  • 45:19 - 45:33
beyond the idea of being and bonding to
  • 45:26 - 45:39
go beyond the idea of the and and so to
  • 45:33 - 45:44
be able to see that even when we thought
  • 45:39 - 45:49
that person existed and was alive they
  • 45:44 - 45:55
weren't really alive in the way that we
  • 45:49 - 46:03
thought they were they were manifesting
  • 45:55 - 46:11
to our consciousness manifesting to our
  • 46:03 - 46:14
visual cortex to Audio cortex but they
  • 46:11 - 46:18
were not real in the way that we thought
  • 46:14 - 46:23
they were real and now when they have
  • 46:18 - 46:33
died they are not going out of being
  • 46:23 - 46:38
into internal nandi so that is our our
  • 46:33 - 46:45
practice of looking deeply our practice
  • 46:38 - 46:50
of inter interview when you touch the
  • 46:45 - 46:54
leaf you look at the leaf deeply
  • 46:50 - 47:00
you recognize that if your consciousness
  • 46:54 - 47:04
was not if there was not consciousness
  • 47:00 - 47:10
    your eye consciousness your mind
  • 47:04 - 47:16
consciousness then the leaf would not be
  • 47:10 - 47:20
manifesting and at the same time you
  • 47:16 - 47:25
    recognize that the leaf has
  • 47:20 - 47:30
    consciousness that the consciousness is
  • 47:25 - 47:34
in the leaf and not just in you and this
  • 47:30 - 47:39
is also something that science is able
  • 47:34 - 47:42
to demonstrate because someone who is
  • 47:39 - 47:48
observing who thinks they are observing
  • 47:42 - 47:53
a particle outside of them actually
  • 47:48 - 47:57
changes the nature of the particle as
  • 47:53 - 48:02
soon as you begin to observe a particle
  • 47:57 - 48:04
    the particle changes so the
  • 48:02 - 48:11
consciousness is not just in you is also
  • 48:04 - 48:18
in the particle this is also an aspect
  • 48:11 - 48:22
of interbeing for us all to be able to
  • 48:18 - 48:28
look deeply into and to be able to
  • 48:22 - 48:31
overcome our our fear that we have
  • 48:28 - 48:40
because we see that we are a separate
  • 48:31 - 48:43
self in in the suture there is the
  • 48:40 - 48:54
example of clapping clapping with your
  • 48:43 - 48:58
hands and obviously you cannot clap with
  • 48:54 - 49:08
    one hand
  • 48:58 - 49:19
you need to have two hands so there is
  • 49:08 - 49:28
not a one hand that can tempt left there
  • 49:19 - 49:34
is not an I who can clap we could say
  • 49:28 - 49:42
that the two hands clap but when we look
  • 49:34 - 49:46
deeply into our hands what do we see we
  • 49:42 - 49:52
see another system we see the bones you
  • 49:46 - 49:55
see the skin the flesh and if we go even
  • 49:52 - 50:00
deeper and we look into the cells of all
  • 49:55 - 50:05
these things we will see that there are
  • 50:00 - 50:11
mitochondria in each of this cell and
  • 50:05 - 50:18
those mitochondria they do not share our
  • 50:11 - 50:23
DNA our genes they are not really our
  • 50:18 - 50:31
self they come from bacteria a long time
  • 50:23 - 50:36
ago so we will find out that there is no
  • 50:31 - 50:36
separate cell that is that is clapping
  • 50:44 - 50:54
similarly the Buddha said do you want to
  • 50:48 - 50:59
overcome your fear of sickness old age
  • 50:54 - 51:06
and death do you want to see the end of
  • 50:59 - 51:14
sickness old age and death then ask the
  • 51:06 - 51:23
question who is it who grows sick who is
  • 51:14 - 51:30
it who grows old who is it who dies and
  • 51:23 - 51:40
normally we say I grow sick I grow old I
  • 51:30 - 51:47
die oh you and with that thought I grow
  • 51:40 - 51:52
old I die we become afraid but if we
  • 51:47 - 51:58
look deeply we will see there is no one
  • 51:52 - 52:03
who grows old there is no one who dies
  • 51:58 - 52:09
there is growing old there is sickness
  • 52:03 - 52:14
there is death but there is no one who
  • 52:09 - 52:16
grows old who is he yeah and that is
  • 52:14 - 52:20
what I like to practice when I am NOT
  • 52:16 - 52:23
well I asked myself who is it who is
  • 52:20 - 52:27
sick and I see there is no one who is
  • 52:23 - 52:35
see there is sickness but there is no
  • 52:27 - 52:39
one who is sick times often told us when
  • 52:35 - 52:44
I was a novice in the do heal temple
  • 52:39 - 52:46
practicing under his teacher the master
  • 52:44 - 52:49
whose first name is Tong Lu second name
  • 52:46 - 52:49
    is green
  • 52:50 - 53:04
one day they were in the garden hoeing
  • 52:56 - 53:12
the earth to plant the taters and ties
  • 53:04 - 53:15
Master was already advanced in age but
  • 53:12 - 53:27
he still insisted on helping in the
  • 53:15 - 53:34
garden and he he was tired and he put
  • 53:27 - 53:40
the hole aside and said that soon I will
  • 53:34 - 53:44
not be tired anymore and then after a
  • 53:40 - 53:49
moment of reflection he looked at Ty and
  • 53:44 - 53:59
he said but who is it who will not be
  • 53:49 - 54:04
tired anymore we have the idea I am here
  • 53:59 - 54:09
now I'm tired and I'm not going to live
  • 54:04 - 54:14
much longer and when I'm not alive I
  • 54:09 - 54:19
will not be tired and all these ideas
  • 54:14 - 54:24
they come from the idea of a separate
  • 54:19 - 54:30
self but when you look at deeply at that
  • 54:24 - 54:33
separate self you can't find it and it's
  • 54:30 - 54:34
changing at every moment from one second
  • 54:33 - 54:39
    to the next
  • 54:34 - 54:43
it's not the same so even though I was
  • 54:39 - 54:46
only a novice he received the
  • 54:43 - 54:51
transmission of that teaching it went
  • 54:46 - 54:51
    very deep in the life
  • 55:08 - 55:11
    [Music]
  • 55:17 - 55:45
I have seen people die and I have seen
  • 55:41 - 55:53
that the moment of death can be a moment
  • 55:45 - 55:59
of deep peace and sometimes before that
  • 55:53 - 55:59
moment comes there is quite a struggle
  • 56:01 - 56:10
it's difficult sometimes for the body to
  • 56:06 - 56:13
give up but maybe it's even more
  • 56:10 - 56:21
difficult for for for the mind from
  • 56:13 - 56:29
Manas to give up but with the practice
  • 56:21 - 56:34
of breathing the practice of recognizing
  • 56:29 - 56:42
there is death but there is no one who
  • 56:34 - 56:48
who dies is possible - to let go and
  • 56:42 - 56:52
even if someone has not practiced those
  • 56:48 - 56:58
who are with the dying person can
  • 56:52 - 57:08
practice for them so that is another
  • 56:58 - 57:14
wonderful aspect of into being that the
  • 57:08 - 57:22
way our state of mind is is able to
  • 57:14 - 57:26
influence those who we are with that is
  • 57:22 - 57:30
why we need the Sangha and you really
  • 57:26 - 57:35
    need your online Sangha
  • 57:30 - 57:40
this time you do not have to be with
  • 57:35 - 57:50
somebody in the same room in order to be
  • 57:40 - 57:56
able to connect with that person I think
  • 57:50 - 58:01
that now we can we can sit still we can
  • 57:56 - 58:09
enjoy our breathing and if we light we
  • 58:01 - 58:17
can close our eyes we can feel how we
  • 58:09 - 58:20
are connected with our large Sangha we
  • 58:17 - 58:25
can feel how we are connected to the
  • 58:20 - 58:31
monks and nuns in plum village as we
  • 58:25 - 58:39
breathe in and out we can feel the
  • 58:31 - 58:45
energy of those who are practicing with
  • 58:39 - 58:52
us at this moment and we can use that
  • 58:45 - 59:00
energy in order to be able to send it to
  • 58:52 - 59:05
our loved ones who need it we can say to
  • 59:00 - 59:12
our loved ones who need our energy I'm
  • 59:05 - 59:15
sending the Sangha energy to you I'm
  • 59:12 - 59:17
sending the energy of plum village to
  • 59:15 - 59:17
    you
  • 59:26 - 59:34
and when we hear the sound of the Bell
  • 59:29 - 59:39
all together we will be feeling our
  • 59:34 - 59:47
    interconnectedness and sending our love
  • 59:39 - 59:52
our peace and our smile to support you
  • 59:47 - 59:52
    in sending your image
  • 60:37 - 60:45
energy moving across the continent to
  • 60:41 - 60:45
    those who need it
  • 61:27 - 61:45
dear Sangha one of the attributes of the
  • 61:33 - 61:52
human mind is called grasping tomahto we
  • 61:45 - 61:57
have two arms two two hands to grasp
  • 61:52 - 62:02
things but there are certain things that
  • 61:57 - 62:11
we cannot grasp cannot grasp the the
  • 62:02 - 62:14
spring breeze and with our mind it's not
  • 62:11 - 62:19
only with our hands that we try and
  • 62:14 - 62:26
grasp things we also try and grasp them
  • 62:19 - 62:30
with our with our mind and a grasping
  • 62:26 - 62:30
like that it causes us to suffer
  • 62:30 - 62:42
especially when we find that we cannot
  • 62:33 - 62:46
grasp what we wanted to grasp you know
  • 62:42 - 62:52
that plum village is in a wine growing
  • 62:46 - 62:58
area so we have many vineyards around
  • 62:52 - 63:04
and most of them they are not organic
  • 62:58 - 63:13
vineyards where I am staying we have
  • 63:04 - 63:20
been yard on two sides and other fields
  • 63:13 - 63:20
on other side and at this time of year
  • 63:21 - 63:32
the farmers come on their big large
  • 63:25 - 63:32
tractors and spray a lot of toxins
  • 63:33 - 63:36
    insecticide fungicide
  • 63:38 - 63:57
outside herbicide and the air is not
  • 63:47 - 64:06
good after they've in spray and I find
  • 63:57 - 64:12
that I grasp to this situation I grasped
  • 64:06 - 64:15
to it as something that has to end as
  • 64:12 - 64:17
    soon as possible
  • 64:15 - 64:24
but obviously that is not going to
  • 64:17 - 64:28
happen if I look deeply I will see that
  • 64:24 - 64:30
it's going to take time for the human
  • 64:28 - 64:31
species not wanting to drink wine
  • 64:30 - 64:35
    anymore
  • 64:31 - 64:39
and for the farmers not wanting to make
  • 64:35 - 64:39
    their money in that way
  • 64:45 - 65:00
so this is what I know is that I can
  • 64:56 - 65:08
take care of Mother Earth with every
  • 65:00 - 65:12
step and with every breath and I can
  • 65:08 - 65:18
accept the human species as not being
  • 65:12 - 65:23
perfect in accepting that the human
  • 65:18 - 65:28
species is not perfect I also accept
  • 65:23 - 65:32
that I am not perfect but I'm very lucky
  • 65:28 - 65:36
that I have the mindfulness trainings
  • 65:32 - 65:43
you have the five mindfulness trainings
  • 65:36 - 65:45
so you can be the kind of human being
  • 65:43 - 65:53
that can take care of the earth
  • 65:45 - 65:58
I learned the verse when I was just
  • 65:53 - 65:58
beginning to be interested in Buddhism
  • 66:00 - 66:13
nothing whatsoever to remove from this
  • 66:07 - 66:16
not a single thing there on to add
  • 66:13 - 66:22
nothing to take away no increase no
  • 66:16 - 66:28
degree not a single thing to add
  • 66:22 - 66:35
    properly beholding properly looking at
  • 66:28 - 66:38
the true nature when truly seen complete
  • 66:35 - 66:38
    liberation
  • 66:41 - 66:59
    [Music]
  • 66:49 - 66:59
from this no single thing there are
  • 67:02 - 67:28
    property holding true nature
  • 67:10 - 67:40
when truly seen completely nothing to
  • 67:28 - 67:40
remove from this no single thing they're
  • 67:46 - 67:59
    holding true nature
  • 67:50 - 68:01
    when truly seemed completely variation
  • 67:59 - 68:04
    [Music]
  • 68:01 - 68:12
and this is what we mean when we talk
  • 68:04 - 68:16
about the ultimate dimension in the
  • 68:12 - 68:22
    historical dimension the human species
  • 68:16 - 68:27
goes up and goes down begins and ends
  • 68:22 - 68:32
and that is something we have to accept
  • 68:27 - 68:37
that is the impermanence but in the
  • 68:32 - 68:45
ultimate dimension nothing is lost but
  • 68:37 - 68:54
    nothing is added every compassionate
  • 68:45 - 68:57
thought every smile and does not stay
  • 68:54 - 68:57
    with you
  • 68:58 - 69:13
becomes part of a wonderful energy which
  • 69:04 - 69:16
cannot be lost every day with our
  • 69:13 - 69:21
practice of mindfulness our practice of
  • 69:16 - 69:29
mindful walking of mindful breathing we
  • 69:21 - 69:29
are able to touch the ultimate dimension
  • 69:34 - 69:55
and touching the ultimate dimension we
  • 69:40 - 69:58
can be ourselves we can be the best kind
  • 69:55 - 69:58
    of human being
  • 70:05 - 70:15
in order to touch the ultimate dimension
  • 70:09 - 70:15
we practice to be aware of interbeing
  • 70:18 - 70:22
    we practice mindfulness
  • 70:29 - 70:38
once you are no longer in confinement
  • 70:33 - 70:41
you will really have an opportunity to
  • 70:38 - 70:48
enjoy Mother Earth as you never enjoyed
  • 70:41 - 70:53
her before but maybe while you are still
  • 70:48 - 70:56
in confinement you don't need to go up
  • 70:53 - 71:00
onto the high mountain you can enjoy
  • 70:56 - 71:06
Mother Earth right away because she is
  • 71:00 - 71:15
there in the food you eat in the sky and
  • 71:06 - 71:18
the clouds outside of your window she is
  • 71:15 - 71:22
there under your feet whether the floor
  • 71:18 - 71:33
is made of wood or made of Earth it's
  • 71:22 - 71:33
still mad at her every step that we make
  • 71:33 - 71:44
can be a peaceful step when you go from
  • 71:38 - 71:51
your kitchen to the your bedroom from
  • 71:44 - 71:56
your bedroom to the bathroom every step
  • 71:51 - 72:01
can bring peace to yourself bring peace
  • 71:56 - 72:03
to your loved ones and bring peace to
  • 72:01 - 72:03
    the world
  • 72:19 - 72:30
    [Music]
  • 72:20 - 72:34
not a he even a walking on the walking
  • 72:30 - 72:34
on the earth and that doesn't media only
  • 72:34 - 72:39
    there
  • 72:34 - 72:46
it also means walking from your bedroom
  • 72:39 - 72:54
to the bathroom walking on the earth is
  • 72:46 - 73:02
    to realize a miracle every
  • 72:54 - 73:12
awaitin every awaitin step manifests the
  • 73:02 - 73:14
madonna tire the ultimate dimension we
  • 73:12 - 73:44
have another song which before we end I
  • 73:14 - 74:01
    will sing to you suddenly
  • 73:44 - 74:06
I'm aware of every step I take through I
  • 74:01 - 74:06
    follow the little
  • 74:09 - 74:29
piglets Oh child suddenly I'm aware of
  • 74:20 - 74:37
every step I take and this is our don't
  • 74:29 - 74:42
drama I'm aware I yeah I'm very careful
  • 74:37 - 74:45
and very heedful of every step and it
  • 74:42 - 74:51
    happened suddenly suddenly I'm
  • 74:45 - 74:56
completely there in the present moment
  • 74:51 - 75:00
because I have done my best to follow my
  • 74:56 - 75:04
breathing to follow my steps I now find
  • 75:00 - 75:07
myself in the present moment well
  • 75:04 - 75:15
there's nothing to add on nothing to
  • 75:07 - 75:18
take away and liberation from sorrow and
  • 75:15 - 75:18
    suffering
  • 75:28 - 75:34
    [Music]
  • 75:39 - 75:42
    [Music]
  • 76:17 - 76:22
    [Music]
  • 76:29 - 76:32
    [Music]
  • 76:41 - 76:44
    you
