  • 0:16 - 0:19
    - [Narrator] This is
    a computer made movie.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    The box represents a satellite,
  • 0:21 - 0:25
which is now in a circular
    orbit going over the pole.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
In the upper right, a clock
counts off the number of orbits.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    Gravity gradient torques force
    the satellite's long axis
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    to point toward the earth.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
Exactly this effect keeps one face
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    of the moon always
    pointing toward the earth.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
This is very useful for weather
    or communication satellites
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    where either an Earth-pointing camera
  • 0:53 - 0:55
or an Earth-pointing antenna is desired.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
In the rest of the movie,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
we should look at the satellite
    only in a reference frame
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    that is orbiting as the
    satellite is doing now.
