Solar Mamas - Hilton LightStay Sustainability Award

  • 0:00 - 0:03
How incredible is it to see somebody
  • 0:03 - 0:06
who has the opportunity to do something
that they've never done before .
  • 0:06 - 0:09
I mean just completely changed their lives
and in such a short period of time
  • 0:09 - 0:12
you come back and bring light
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    to your entire community
when they haven't had light before,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    when the kids haven't been
able to study at night .
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    You see this book
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    Everything in this book
    their grandmother will learn
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    in 6 months .
  • 0:24 - 0:27
So if the lady is scared now tell me,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
Now is the time to say no.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
Two years ago, I came to Sundance
    and met Bunker Roy
  • 0:52 - 0:55
and he is the person who started the Barefoot College.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
We started talking about what he did
and he said well I train grandmothers
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    how to become solar engineers
  • 1:01 - 1:04
Women who go to India for 6 months .
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    Women from the most disenfranchised
    parts of the world,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    many of whom don't know
    how to read or write,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
and I just thought this was
    the most incredible story.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    When we initially started
    to pull for this film
  • 1:16 - 1:20
We thought we would follow 3 women
from 3 different countries around the globe
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    that were attending
    the Barefoot College in India.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    Within one month
  • 1:24 - 1:26
and one character really stood out
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    and her name was Raifea
  • 1:29 - 1:30
After a month into her education.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
Her husband called her home and said
    if you don't come back,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
then I will divorce you and steal your kids
and you'll never see them again.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
So it was her drive from there
    to get back to India.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
And you know make her brain work
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    and use her education
    to better herself
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    and her village that
made her just overtake the entire film.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    I want to change
    the situation in this village.
  • 1:50 - 1:57
You think I am a joke
    and full of hot air.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    Right? Wrong, you are wrong.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    We'll see
  • 2:03 - 2:06
There's an energy crisis around the world .
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    Specifically to Jordan.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
They have no natural energy source
so solar energy is something huge
  • 2:12 - 2:14
It really has to be pushed
    on the ground there .
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    It's great .
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    The company like Hilton can
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    help filmakers
    raise global awareness
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    Airing these stories
    in Hilton's worldwide
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    you have much better exposure,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
then we would just in the theater
    or television
  • 2:28 - 2:30
It really helps to get the message
    out there.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
the sustainability is a very important issue
that we have to address right now .
  • 2:35 - 2:37
I think everybody in the world
  • 2:37 - 2:39
is at one point in their lives
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    faced with this question.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    Can I possibly do this?
  • 2:43 - 2:46
Here is something that I don't think
there's any way that I can do this,
  • 2:46 - 2:50
but I really Iove to try
    and the fear of that,
  • 2:50 - 2:55
    and ultimately if you're successful
at something that you're really afraid of
  • 2:55 - 2:57
that can be some of the most
  • 2:57 - 2:59
you know the most life-changing moments.
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    Thank you.
