0:07 - 0:09["New York Close Up"]
-
0:12 - 0:15["Jamian Juliano-Villani Gets to work"]
-
0:17 - 0:19It's a very simple routine:
-
0:19 - 0:20I come in,
-
0:20 - 0:21reheat my coffee,
-
0:21 - 0:23go on to computer, look at stuff,
-
0:23 - 0:25clean my brushes,
-
0:26 - 0:28and then I get to work.
-
0:36 - 0:40I've not had time off since I started,
which is crazy. -
0:50 - 0:53Once you have a deadline
it's like impending doom. -
0:53 - 0:54It's like a pimp!
-
0:55 - 0:57Constantly, like you owe someone something.
-
0:57 - 0:59Stress assassinates creativity.
-
1:05 - 1:08If you make a bad painting
and your job is an artist, -
1:08 - 1:10it's like the worst.
-
1:10 - 1:10It's mortifying.
-
1:10 - 1:14It's like having chocolate all over your face
or something-- -
1:14 - 1:16and you're going to some gala.
-
1:17 - 1:20You're only as good as your last painting--
-
1:20 - 1:21which sucks--
-
1:22 - 1:24but, you know, it's kind of the truth.
-
1:32 - 1:34I was growing up in the middle of nowhere,
in New Jersey. -
1:34 - 1:38And I just wanted to get out of New Jersey
and get to New York immediately. -
1:40 - 1:45New York is where it seemed like all
the artists went to be artists. -
1:45 - 1:46["Painters Painting"]
-
1:46 - 1:47I was watching "Painters Painting"--
-
1:47 - 1:50Stella i Rauschenberg
and blah blah blah, -
1:50 - 1:51and they're all in New York, you know--
-
1:51 - 1:53sitting on ladders, covered in paint.
-
1:53 - 1:55For me as a teenager, it was amazing.
-
1:56 - 1:57"That's..."
-
1:57 - 1:59"That's it!"
You know? -
1:59 - 2:00Now I romanticize it less
-
2:00 - 2:05because coming to New York
and starting to be in the art world thing-- -
2:05 - 2:06it's insane!
-
2:07 - 2:10I had a million shitty jobs.
-
2:10 - 2:12Overnight shift diner waitress.
-
2:12 - 2:13I worked at a group home.
-
2:13 - 2:15Taught gymnastics.
-
2:15 - 2:16Kindergarten teacher.
-
2:16 - 2:21I organized books for a marine
who was obsessed with ships. -
2:22 - 2:25I was commuting back and forth
from working at a restaurant in New Jersey. -
2:25 - 2:27so I could get my first apartment in New York.
-
2:28 - 2:29I was basically painting on top of my bed,
-
2:29 - 2:31staying up every other night to paint.
-
2:31 - 2:34Slowly, I got a slightly bigger room--
-
2:34 - 2:36and then I got a slightly bigger room.
-
2:37 - 2:40Three years ago,
I actually got my first real studio ever. -
2:40 - 2:42That was like Christmas, every day.
-
2:48 - 2:49--Terrible.
-
2:54 - 2:56The paintings, I think, are...
-
2:56 - 2:57They're tricky,
-
3:00 - 3:02You need to make them better,
make them weirder -
3:02 - 3:04make them smarter,
make them dumber. -
3:12 - 3:15You just paint a snowman
in the desert... -
3:16 - 3:18That's it? Really?
-
3:18 - 3:19Like, there's no other step,
you know? -
3:19 - 3:21It's like some stupid one-liner?
-
3:23 - 3:27I have a sense of humor
and a really light way to approach something. -
3:27 - 3:28Just come up with a joke,
-
3:28 - 3:30and then from there,
how can you offset that, -
3:30 - 3:32so it's like
psychological or personal? -
3:33 - 3:36It's like ping pong
back and forth, back and forth, -
3:36 - 3:39until it's just
all these things going like this, -
3:39 - 3:40negating itself.
-
3:41 - 3:44A lot of weird decisions just happen here
by myself -
3:44 - 3:45in the middle of the night.
-
3:45 - 3:47But also a lot of it is talking to other people.
-
3:48 - 3:50If you have all these voices
coming here, -
3:50 - 3:53it's less of a one-person lecture.
-
3:54 - 3:57[Ajay Kurian, Artist]
-
3:59 - 4:01Across the hall is Ajay,
-
4:03 - 4:04who is an amazing artist.
-
4:04 - 4:08Man, he saved my ass so many times
with so many shows. -
4:09 - 4:11"Uh, can you give me a minute
and we could like, um..." -
4:11 - 4:13"You could just give me moral support please? Thanks."
-
4:13 - 4:18--I'm thinking like a very very, super light,
pale teal kind of colors. -
4:18 - 4:21--Blue, or very very pale purple.
-
4:22 - 4:23--Purple is probably better?
-
4:25 - 4:26--Like cool purple.
-
4:26 - 4:27[KURIAN]
--Like lavender, or? -
4:27 - 4:28[JULIANO-VILLANI]
--Cool ass purple. -
4:29 - 4:30[KURIAN]
--I could see that. -
4:30 - 4:30[JULIANO-VILLANI]
--Right. -
4:32 - 4:33--Or like a...
-
4:33 - 4:34[KURIAN]
--Is that a vase or a mirror? -
4:34 - 4:36[JULIANO-VILLANI]
--Who the fuck knows? -
4:36 - 4:37--It will be a mirror.
-
4:37 - 4:38[KURIAN]
--Okay. -
4:38 - 4:39[JULIANO-VILLANI]
--Hmm... -
4:42 - 4:43--Fuck.
-
4:45 - 4:46One of my friends was telling me,
-
4:46 - 4:48"Just put some crap in there,
no one can tell." -
4:48 - 4:49I was like, "Thanks, jerk!"
-
4:49 - 4:50[Inhales sharply]
-
4:51 - 4:53But I can definitely tell.
-
4:53 - 4:55Because these are supposed to be confident.
-
5:01 - 5:02I just turned 30.
-
5:03 - 5:06I mean, I chainsmoke--
like, you know, a pack and a half a day. -
5:06 - 5:07I drink a lot.
-
5:07 - 5:09My sleeping habits are terrible.
-
5:09 - 5:10I eat garbage.
-
5:10 - 5:13This is just a vessel,
you know what I mean? -
5:16 - 5:19The past couple of years, I had so much stamina
-
5:19 - 5:21and just kept on working and pumping.
-
5:21 - 5:22And now, it's like, when it actually matters,
-
5:22 - 5:24I got to make sure I still have it.
-
5:24 - 5:27I think the main pressure is
maintaining integrity -
5:27 - 5:29and making work that you feel good about--
-
5:29 - 5:31even under pressure,
which is really difficult. -
5:33 - 5:35I really want to push the paintings--
-
5:35 - 5:38and I don't know how yet,
but hopefully I'll figure it out -
5:38 - 5:41and make them something
that they aren't yet. -
5:43 - 5:45I know I'm going to make some, like,
-
5:45 - 5:47embarrassing, bad sculptures
or videos or something. -
5:47 - 5:48But, like, fuck it,
I got to do it, -
5:48 - 5:49now is the time--
-
5:50 - 5:52while I have the energy.

- Jamian Juliano-Villani Gets to Work | Art21 "New York Close Up"
- Description:
-
Can an artist stay inspired day in and day out?
Under near constant deadlines for the last four years, painter Jamian Juliano-Villani grapples with the demands of consistently producing new and better work. Her paintings have received widespread attention, including gallery and museum exhibitions, adding to the stresses of growing as an artist. "The main pressure is maintaining integrity and making work that you feel good about," says the artist, "even under pressure, which is really difficult."
As a teenager in New Jersey, Juliano-Villani recalls watching artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Frank Stella in the 1973 documentary “Painters Painting,” which inspired her to move to New York City. After taking on a variety of odd jobs—from overnight diner waitress to gymnastics instructor—her romanticized notion of the city changed, but Juliano-Villani has maintained a relentless dedication to advancing her artwork. “You’re only as good as your last painting,” the artist explains, “so each has got to be better.”
Painting a new work in her Ridgewood, Queens studio, the artist experiments with images from her vast digital image collection in a search for solutions, looking for the right content and composition to achieve a balance between psychological depth and light humor. When she gets stuck, Juliano-Villani calls upon friend, studio neighbor and 2017 Whitney Biennial artist Ajay Kurian for input. “I really want to push the paintings, but I don’t know how yet,” she says, “Hopefully I’ll figure it out and make them something that they aren’t yet.”
Jamian Juliano-Villani (b. 1987, Newark, New Jersey, USA) lives and works in New York. Learn more about the artist at: https://art21.org/artist/jamian-juliano-villani/
