    and what they meant

to Israel and to us today.
  • 11:35 - 11:37
And I'm going to ask Rod to start us off.
  • 11:37 - 11:38
We're going to go to Hebrews,
  • 11:38 - 11:41
    chapter 10, Hebrews, chapter 10,

    and we're going to read

  • 11:44 - 11:46
And once we get there, Rod,
  • 11:46 - 11:48
would you read that for us?
  • 11:48 - 11:50
    (Rod) Certainly, Hebrews,
  • 11:50 - 11:52
    chapter 10, verses 1 to 4,
  • 11:52 - 11:53
    and I'll be reading
  • 11:53 - 11:55
    from the King James Version:
  • 12:32 - 12:33
    (Brittany) Thank you, Rod.
  • 12:33 - 12:35
So, the question for the team,

  • 12:37 - 12:41
of bulls and goats to take away sins,
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    then what was the purpose?
  • 12:43 - 12:45

  • 12:45 - 12:48
God's the One who gave them that system,
  • 12:48 - 12:51
right, to make these sacrifices -
  • 12:51 - 12:52
    why, what was the purpose
  • 12:52 - 12:55
of that ceremonial system? Yes, Pedro.
  • 12:55 - 12:56
    (Pedro) Well, we see
  • 12:56 - 12:58
    that the sacrificial system
    pointed to Jesus,
  • 12:58 - 13:02
so it was by faith that the Lamb of God
  • 13:02 - 13:05
will come and die for their sins
    in the future.
  • 13:05 - 13:06
The same way we have the same faith
  • 13:06 - 13:08
    to look backwards and see
  • 13:08 - 13:09
    that Jesus has done,
  • 13:09 - 13:13
and has died for us, 2,000 years ago.
  • 13:13 - 13:16
(Brittany) That's right, so God was trying
    to teach them
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    the plan of salvation, right,
  • 13:18 - 13:19
    through this sacrificial system.
  • 13:19 - 13:20
    Shaina, did you have
  • 13:20 - 13:24
    something to add to that?
  • 13:24 - 13:27
(Shaina) Yes, as it says in verse 3,
  • 13:27 - 13:31
those sacrifices are a reminder of sins,
  • 13:31 - 13:33
and so, every time we have
  • 13:33 - 13:35
    to sacrifice these animals,
  • 13:35 - 13:39
we're reminded of not only what was
    going to come
  • 13:39 - 13:41
    through Jesus' ultimate sacrifice
  • 13:41 - 13:44
    or through the Messiah's
    ultimate sacrifice,
  • 13:44 - 13:47
    but I'm reminded that it's
    because of sin
  • 13:47 - 13:48
    and because of the pain
  • 13:48 - 13:50
    and the anguish of sin,
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    these animals have to die,
  • 13:52 - 13:54
or there has to be blood shed
  • 13:54 - 13:59
in order for my sin to be forgiven.
  • 13:59 - 14:00
    (Brittany) So, a reminder
  • 14:00 - 14:02
of the penalty of what sin costs.
  • 14:02 - 14:03
    Yes, Travis, you want
  • 14:03 - 14:06
to add to that as well?
  • 14:06 - 14:07
    (Travis) So, there is something
  • 14:07 - 14:09
that struck me, too, in these verses,
  • 14:09 - 14:11
and one of the things was
  • 14:11 - 14:14
it says it's not possible for the blood
  • 14:14 - 14:17
of bulls and goats to take away sin.
  • 14:17 - 14:19
And as I was contemplating that,
  • 14:19 - 14:21
    and I'd heard somewhere else
  • 14:21 - 14:25
the same ideas, that the thing
  • 14:25 - 14:26
    that bulls and goats have
  • 14:26 - 14:27
    in relation to human beings
  • 14:27 - 14:29
    is that they're created.
  • 14:29 - 14:31
    And I thought, "Wow, there's
  • 14:31 - 14:33
    a deep underlying beautiful message
    in here,
  • 14:33 - 14:36
    and that's that I can't
    save myself either."
  • 14:36 - 14:38
    Back in the Pagan times,
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    they would sacrifice children
  • 14:40 - 14:42
and these kind of things to appease a god,
  • 14:42 - 14:44
    but God gave Himself.
  • 14:44 - 14:46
And that's what this is pointing to,
  • 14:46 - 14:47
    is that God gave Himself,
  • 14:47 - 14:50
    and we can't save ourselves,
  • 14:50 - 14:51
    even if we would sacrifice
  • 14:51 - 14:54
a human or any, it doesn't qualify.
  • 14:54 - 14:58
Jesus came and gave Himself for humanity.
  • 14:58 - 15:00
    (Brittany) Most important point,
  • 15:00 - 15:01
    we can't save ourselves.
  • 15:01 - 15:03
And the lambs and the goats
  • 15:03 - 15:04
were all pointing forward to Jesus,
  • 15:04 - 15:06
    that perfect sacrifice.
  • 15:06 - 15:08
Now, as we continue in our study,
  • 15:08 - 15:10
we want to look at some of the sacrifices,
  • 15:10 - 15:12
because there were many different types
  • 15:12 - 15:14
    in the ceremonial system,
  • 15:14 - 15:18
and each of them was teaching a lesson.
  • 15:18 - 15:20
    And so, let's just review
  • 15:20 - 15:21
    the book of Leviticus.
  • 15:21 - 15:23
The first few chapters of Leviticus
  • 15:23 - 15:25
give us a description of each type
  • 15:25 - 15:27
    of sacrifice that God gave
  • 15:27 - 15:29
    for His people to perform.
  • 15:29 - 15:30
And we're just kind of going to do
  • 15:30 - 15:33
a review of some of those sacrifices
  • 15:33 - 15:34
and see what was the point.
  • 15:34 - 15:36
What was God trying to teach them,
  • 15:36 - 15:39
and what can we learn from that today?
  • 15:39 - 15:42
So, as we review some of the sacrifices,
  • 15:42 - 15:43
    can anyone think of one
  • 15:43 - 15:45
    of the types of sacrifices?
  • 15:45 - 15:50
Any one type of sacrifice come to mind?
    Yes, Jason.
  • 15:50 - 15:52
(Jason) There was what was called
  • 15:52 - 15:54
the burnt offering, and that was
  • 15:54 - 15:56
the sacrifice that would happen there
  • 15:56 - 15:58
    every day in the courtyard
  • 15:58 - 16:00
    at the altar of sacrifice.
  • 16:00 - 16:03
And that specifically was an example
  • 16:03 - 16:05
    of Jesus Himself, the Savior,
  • 16:05 - 16:07
the Lamb of God, who would take away
  • 16:07 - 16:08
    the sin of the world.
  • 16:08 - 16:10
    So, that was very specific
  • 16:10 - 16:12
    as a representation of salvation.
  • 16:12 - 16:13
    And that's the first sacrifice
  • 16:13 - 16:16
    actually listed in the book
    of Leviticus here.
  • 16:16 - 16:17
    (Brittany) Thank you, Jason,
  • 16:17 - 16:18
    so the burnt offering.
  • 16:18 - 16:20
And something that I found interesting
  • 16:20 - 16:21
    when I was studying
  • 16:21 - 16:22
    about the burnt offering
  • 16:22 - 16:25
is that the whole animal was consumed.
  • 16:25 - 16:27
And in some of the other sacrifices,
  • 16:27 - 16:29
parts of the animal were burned, and parts
  • 16:29 - 16:32
of them the priests actually ate.
  • 16:32 - 16:34
And this one, the whole thing
    was consumed,
  • 16:34 - 16:37
and what that points forward to in Jesus
  • 16:37 - 16:40
is that He gave His whole life.
  • 16:40 - 16:41
He didn't just give a body part.
  • 16:41 - 16:45
Like today, we can be organ donors, right?
  • 16:45 - 16:46
    If something happened to us,
  • 16:46 - 16:48
    we can donate our organs
  • 16:48 - 16:50
    to save someone else's life.
  • 16:50 - 16:53
But Jesus gave His whole life for us.
  • 16:53 - 16:56
    And what a beautiful illustration
  • 16:56 - 16:58
of that in the burnt offering.
  • 16:58 - 17:00
And we find that in Leviticus, chapter 1.
  • 17:00 - 17:04
Any other offerings come to mind?
    Yes, Rod.
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    (Rod) So, in chapter 2,
  • 17:06 - 17:07
    there is the grain offering,
  • 17:07 - 17:09
or in my Bible it says the meat offering,
  • 17:09 - 17:11
    that "meat" is just being
  • 17:11 - 17:13
    a generic term for "food."
  • 17:13 - 17:15
But the grain offering would have been
  • 17:15 - 17:18
an offering, not to forgive sin,
  • 17:18 - 17:20
because there was no shedding of blood,
  • 17:20 - 17:22
so that becomes important to understand,
  • 17:22 - 17:23
    especially when you just read
  • 17:23 - 17:24
back in Genesis when you see
  • 17:24 - 17:27
that one brother's sacrifice is accepted
  • 17:27 - 17:30
and another's is not, you know.
  • 17:30 - 17:31
    (Brittany) So, the grain offering,
  • 17:31 - 17:34
and what was the grain offering given for?
  • 17:34 - 17:35
    There was a purpose
  • 17:35 - 17:36
    for that grain offering.
  • 17:36 - 17:39
No shedding of blood, like Rod mentioned.
  • 17:39 - 17:41
Pedro, did you want to add to that?
  • 17:41 - 17:42
(Pedro) It was an offering of gratitude,
  • 17:42 - 17:44
    something of a blessing,
  • 17:44 - 17:46
a child given or a family celebration.
  • 17:46 - 17:47
    That's the time you come
  • 17:47 - 17:49
and celebrate, and you want God
  • 17:49 - 17:51
to be part of that celebration with you.
  • 17:51 - 17:52
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 17:52 - 17:54
And in each one of these sacrifices,
  • 17:54 - 17:56
we're going to see Jesus represented
    in a different part
  • 17:56 - 17:57
    of His ministry for us.
  • 17:57 - 18:00
And as I was studying into this,
  • 18:00 - 18:01
    I learned that this offering
  • 18:01 - 18:03
    of grain or of bread,
  • 18:03 - 18:05
    sometimes they would make
  • 18:05 - 18:07
    unleavened bread and offer that,
  • 18:07 - 18:08
    it was a representation
  • 18:08 - 18:10
    of Jesus' sinless life
  • 18:10 - 18:11
    that He lived for us.
  • 18:11 - 18:12
    Because no blood was shed,
  • 18:12 - 18:14
    it wasn't representing His sacrifice,
  • 18:14 - 18:16
but it was representing His perfect life
  • 18:16 - 18:18
that He lived on our behalf.
  • 18:18 - 18:20
And what a beautiful picture of Jesus.
  • 18:20 - 18:22
Any other sacrifices come to mind?
  • 18:22 - 18:24
We've talked about the burnt offering,
  • 18:24 - 18:28
    the offering of the grain.
  • 18:28 - 18:32
Any other ones come to mind in Leviticus?
  • 18:32 - 18:33
Rodney, can you think of an offering
  • 18:33 - 18:36
    that we haven't mentioned yet?
  • 18:36 - 18:38
(Rodney) Yes, there is one that is called
  • 18:38 - 18:41
    a peace or fellowship offering;
    that's another one.
  • 18:41 - 18:43
    We find that in Leviticus,
  • 18:43 - 18:46
    chapter 3, specifically.
  • 18:46 - 18:48
    (Brittany) And anyone can explain
  • 18:48 - 18:49
    what does that mean?
  • 18:49 - 18:50
    What's the significance
  • 18:50 - 18:54
of this peace offering? Yes, Jason.
  • 18:54 - 18:55
(Jason) I'm going to take a stab at it.
  • 18:55 - 18:58
I may not be correct, but I think
    it has something to do
  • 18:58 - 18:59
    with the relationship
  • 18:59 - 19:00
    that God has with us,
  • 19:00 - 19:02
and this offering is an example
  • 19:02 - 19:04
    of that relationship.
  • 19:04 - 19:06
    In this case it was
  • 19:06 - 19:07
    thought of more social,
  • 19:07 - 19:09
    but in a larger context,
  • 19:09 - 19:10
    it's more the relationship
  • 19:10 - 19:12
    that God has with man.
  • 19:12 - 19:15
(Brittany) Yeah, and even in that offering
  • 19:15 - 19:17
part of it was for the priest to eat,
  • 19:17 - 19:18
and part of it was consumed.
  • 19:18 - 19:20
    So, we see the relationship
  • 19:20 - 19:23
between God's part and man's part,
  • 19:23 - 19:26
so that's beautiful to see that
    as well, yes.
  • 19:26 - 19:30
And then we also have mentioned
    this sin offering
  • 19:30 - 19:31
    or purification offering.
  • 19:31 - 19:33
    That's probably the one
  • 19:33 - 19:34
    we're most familiar with.
  • 19:34 - 19:36
    We often hear about lambs
  • 19:36 - 19:39
being slain, right, and the reason
  • 19:39 - 19:41
    was because of sin.
  • 19:41 - 19:43
Can anyone tell us a little bit
  • 19:43 - 19:47
about the sin offering that was given?
  • 19:47 - 19:48
    Harold, would you explain
  • 19:48 - 19:50
that one to us a little bit?
  • 19:50 - 19:51
    (Harold) Yeah, and actually,
  • 19:51 - 19:53
it's found in Leviticus, chapter 4.
  • 19:53 - 19:57
And just quickly looking at it,
  • 19:57 - 19:59
the interesting thing, it says if a person
  • 19:59 - 20:01
    sins unintentionally or through error,
  • 20:01 - 20:04
    they would actually offer
    this sin offering.
  • 20:04 - 20:07
And it's interesting that it doesn't say,
  • 20:07 - 20:10
like, willful, if it was willful.
  • 20:10 - 20:14
So, I wonder, it's like, eventually,
  • 20:14 - 20:16
they will understand that it was willful,
  • 20:16 - 20:17
but maybe through the Holy Spirit
  • 20:17 - 20:20
    they get that understanding.
  • 20:20 - 20:22
    (Brittany) That's a great point.
  • 20:22 - 20:23
    And something I found interesting,
  • 20:23 - 20:25
    reading about this sin offering,
  • 20:25 - 20:27
    the animal was actually burned
  • 20:27 - 20:29
    outside of the camp.
  • 20:29 - 20:30
And if we think about Jesus,
  • 20:30 - 20:32
    where was He crucified?
  • 20:32 - 20:34
    Outside of Jerusalem, right?
  • 20:34 - 20:36
    So, each of these sacrifices
  • 20:36 - 20:37
    was pointing to Jesus
  • 20:37 - 20:40
in one aspect of His death or His life
  • 20:40 - 20:44
for us, and so beautifully portrayed.
  • 20:44 - 20:45
    I'm glad that we don't
  • 20:45 - 20:46
have to sacrifice the animals today,
  • 20:46 - 20:48
but we can learn a lot
  • 20:48 - 20:49
    from each of these sacrifices.
  • 20:49 - 20:51
There was one more kind of sacrifice
  • 20:51 - 20:53
    mentioned in Leviticus,
  • 20:53 - 20:55
    and this one's often called
  • 20:55 - 20:57
    the trespass offering
  • 20:57 - 20:58
    or the reparation offering.
  • 20:58 - 21:00
    Can anyone explain to us
  • 21:00 - 21:02
what that offering was all about?
  • 21:02 - 21:03
    Travis, would you be able
  • 21:03 - 21:07
to explain that one to us?
  • 21:07 - 21:09
    (Travis) Well, as I studied
  • 21:09 - 21:13
    these different offerings,
  • 21:13 - 21:16
    Jesus becomes the fulfillment
    of each of them.
  • 21:16 - 21:19
    And the guilt offering,
  • 21:19 - 21:21
    as I was studying it,
  • 21:21 - 21:23
    seemed to point to Jesus
  • 21:23 - 21:28
taking the guilt for us on the cross.
  • 21:28 - 21:29
    And I could be wrong,
  • 21:29 - 21:32
    but the different sin offerings
  • 21:32 - 21:34
    and things offered, each one
  • 21:34 - 21:36
pointing to Jesus in a significant way,
  • 21:36 - 21:40
but that's the way I saw this offering.
  • 21:40 - 21:41
    (Brittany) Definitely, so Jesus
  • 21:41 - 21:43
    takes away our guilt,
  • 21:43 - 21:45
not just the penalty of our sin, but He
  • 21:45 - 21:47
clears our conscience, right, as well.
  • 21:47 - 21:48
    Jason, did you have
  • 21:48 - 21:49
    something to add to that?
  • 21:49 - 21:51
(Jason) Sure, and one thing about this,
  • 21:51 - 21:53
not that we work out our own salvation,
  • 21:53 - 21:55
    but there is a recognition
  • 21:55 - 21:57
in this sacrifice or this offering
  • 21:57 - 21:58
that there is something we've done wrong,
  • 21:58 - 22:00
    and there is a restitution
  • 22:00 - 22:01
    that needs to be made.
  • 22:01 - 22:04
And so, there is a part of the sacrifice
  • 22:04 - 22:06
that actually the person has to add or do,
  • 22:06 - 22:08
    something specific; I think
    it was one fifth.
  • 22:08 - 22:10
So, there's a point there that when you
  • 22:10 - 22:12
    have done something wrong,
  • 22:12 - 22:13
    there's a rule you have
  • 22:13 - 22:15
    to repay the wrong,
  • 22:15 - 22:17
and that was part of the sacrifice.
  • 22:17 - 22:18
    (Brittany) Yeah...
  • 22:18 - 22:20
    (Derek) I was just listening
    to all of this,
  • 22:20 - 22:22
    and, of course, it's interesting
  • 22:22 - 22:23
    to hear them all,
  • 22:23 - 22:26
and I'm thinking how simple the gospel is.
  • 22:26 - 22:28
Everyone who calls upon the name
  • 22:28 - 22:30
of the Lord shall be saved.
  • 22:30 - 22:31
    (Team) Amen.
  • 22:31 - 22:34
    (Derek) I think the tragedy,
  • 22:34 - 22:36
and it can happen even today
  • 22:36 - 22:39
    with religious services and traditions
    and rituals,
  • 22:39 - 22:41
    is that Jesus gets lost.
  • 22:41 - 22:43
It could happen in the old system,
  • 22:43 - 22:45
that they thought that actually somehow
  • 22:45 - 22:47
    those sacrifices, "Maybe if we
  • 22:47 - 22:49
    killed a thousand rams,"
  • 22:49 - 22:50
    which Micah says, "No, that's
  • 22:50 - 22:53
not going to please God," that that is...
  • 22:53 - 22:56
But it's all pointing to Messiah.
  • 22:56 - 22:58
And I just love the simplicity,
  • 22:58 - 23:00
    Brittany, of the gospel,
  • 23:00 - 23:01
    that everyone who calls
  • 23:01 - 23:03
upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
  • 23:03 - 23:06
And all of these lessons can be learned,
  • 23:06 - 23:07
but it's as simple as saying,
  • 23:07 - 23:09
    "Jesus, will You save me?
  • 23:09 - 23:12
Will the work that You accomplished
  • 23:12 - 23:14
    be applied on my behalf?"
  • 23:14 - 23:17
    (Brittany) That's right, thank you,
    Pastor Derek.
  • 23:17 - 23:18
Pedro, did you want to add to that?
  • 23:18 - 23:20
    (Pedro) It's a beautiful thing
  • 23:20 - 23:21
to learn this because even today
  • 23:21 - 23:23
we have some traditions that we do
  • 23:23 - 23:24
    that might cause us
  • 23:24 - 23:27
to draw ourselves away from God.
  • 23:27 - 23:28
    But what I'm thinking
  • 23:28 - 23:32
is that every sacrifice you administer
  • 23:32 - 23:34
to a part of our life, that Jesus can come
  • 23:34 - 23:36
and fulfill it is the beauty,
  • 23:36 - 23:39
that God can mold and solve
  • 23:39 - 23:42
    every aspect of our spirituality.
  • 23:42 - 23:44
And He's there to connect with us
  • 23:44 - 23:45
    every step of the way.
  • 23:45 - 23:46
    (Brittany) Amen. Thank you
  • 23:46 - 23:48
    for sharing that, Pedro.
  • 23:48 - 23:49
    One question for the team
  • 23:49 - 23:50
that's not here on the outline,
  • 23:50 - 23:53
    but just thinking about all
    these sacrifices
  • 23:53 - 23:55
    that the people would bring,
  • 23:55 - 23:56
what kind of sacrifice does God
  • 23:56 - 23:58
    want from us today?
  • 23:58 - 23:59
    We don't kill lambs.
  • 23:59 - 24:01
We don't, you know, take bread
  • 24:01 - 24:04
to the church and burn it,
  • 24:04 - 24:06
    or those types of things.
  • 24:06 - 24:08
But what does God want from us?
  • 24:08 - 24:09
    What kind of sacrifice
  • 24:09 - 24:11
could we offer to Him? Yes, Rod.
  • 24:11 - 24:12
(Rod) I think He wants us
  • 24:12 - 24:14
    to follow in His example
  • 24:14 - 24:16
where He gave His life, His time,
  • 24:16 - 24:19
    His talents in complete submission
  • 24:19 - 24:20
    to doing His Father's will.
  • 24:20 - 24:22
    I think that's what He's after today,
  • 24:22 - 24:25
not blood or anything like that, or grain.
  • 24:25 - 24:26
I think He just wants us to sacrifice
  • 24:26 - 24:29
of our time and to be united to His will,
  • 24:29 - 24:32
    bringing other people into understanding
    the love of God.
  • 24:32 - 24:34
    (Brittany) Definitely, so, our time,
  • 24:34 - 24:37
    definitely our talents, using that
    for God's glory.
  • 24:37 - 24:39
Yes, Sabina, did you want to share?
  • 24:39 - 24:41
    (Sabina) With your question,
  • 24:41 - 24:42
the first verse that came to me
  • 24:42 - 24:44
    is Hebrews 10,
  • 24:44 - 24:46
    actually it's from Hebrews 10:5-10,
  • 24:46 - 24:52
but most specifically verses 8 and 9.
  • 24:52 - 24:54
    Can I read that? Yes.
  • 24:54 - 24:57
I'm reading from the New King James
    Version, and it says:
  • 25:15 - 25:17
So, I think the key word here
  • 25:17 - 25:19
    is saying, "Behold, I have
  • 25:19 - 25:20
    come to do Your will."
  • 25:20 - 25:24
So, it's the desire to do God's will
    and to please Him
  • 25:24 - 25:26
    and to follow His commandments
  • 25:26 - 25:28
and to obey because He loves us
  • 25:28 - 25:31
and as a response to our own good also.
  • 25:31 - 25:32
    (Brittany) Definitely. Yes...
  • 25:32 - 25:34
    (Derek) And I thought, also,
  • 25:34 - 25:35
if I may read a text
  • 25:35 - 25:36
    from Romans, chapter 12.
  • 25:36 - 25:38
    When you said what sacrifice,
  • 25:38 - 25:41
and it ties in with what Rod said, too,
  • 25:41 - 25:43
Romans, chapter 12 and verse 1.
  • 25:43 - 25:46
I have the New King James Version
    of the Bible,
  • 25:46 - 25:47
    and the Apostle Paul
  • 25:47 - 25:49
    appealing to Christians,
  • 25:49 - 25:51
so these are people who have been saved
  • 25:51 - 25:54
    by faith in Jesus, right?
  • 25:54 - 25:56
    The salvation is accomplished,
    but he says:
  • 26:12 - 26:14
    Not your reasonable atonement,
  • 26:14 - 26:16
    not your reasonable payment.
  • 26:16 - 26:17
    You've been saved by grace
  • 26:17 - 26:20
through faith in Jesus, your Savior.
  • 26:20 - 26:21
But he says, "I want you to present
  • 26:21 - 26:24
your bodies as a living sacrifice,"
  • 26:24 - 26:25
    which, I think, ties in
  • 26:25 - 26:26
    with what Rod said.
  • 26:26 - 26:28
The way that we live for Christ
  • 26:28 - 26:33
is our way of sharing our thanks to Him
  • 26:33 - 26:35
and also a witness to others
  • 26:35 - 26:36
    of what He can do.
  • 26:36 - 26:37
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 26:37 - 26:39
    Thank you, Pastor Derek, beautiful.
  • 26:39 - 26:40
    And there is much more
  • 26:40 - 26:42
we could go into about how do we live
  • 26:42 - 26:43
    that life that glorifies God.
  • 26:43 - 26:46
We could spend a whole lesson on that,
  • 26:46 - 26:47
but we want to continue on,
  • 26:47 - 26:49
looking at Jesus, our perfect sacrifice,
  • 26:49 - 26:53
and He's also our perfect High Priest.
  • 26:53 - 26:55
And so, the next part of our lesson,
  • 26:55 - 26:56
we're going to look a little bit
  • 26:56 - 26:59
at some of the Levitical priests.
  • 26:59 - 27:00
    And we know that,
  • 27:00 - 27:02
    unlike the Levitical priests,
  • 27:02 - 27:03
    Jesus didn't have to offer
  • 27:03 - 27:05
a sacrifice for Himself, for His sin,
  • 27:05 - 27:08
and then on behalf of the people.
  • 27:08 - 27:09
    He just offered Himself
  • 27:09 - 27:13
on behalf of all of us - why was that?
  • 27:13 - 27:14
Why didn't Jesus have to offer
  • 27:14 - 27:18
    that additional sacrifice? Yes, John.
  • 27:18 - 27:20
    (John) The priests themselves
    were sinners,
  • 27:20 - 27:22
so they needed to make an atonement
  • 27:22 - 27:23
for them and their family before they
  • 27:23 - 27:25
make an atonement for the people.
  • 27:25 - 27:27
But Jesus was not a sinner.
  • 27:27 - 27:28
    Jesus lived a perfect life,
  • 27:28 - 27:30
and He lived a holy life,
  • 27:30 - 27:31
    so there was no need
  • 27:31 - 27:35
for Him to offer a sacrifice for Himself.
  • 27:35 - 27:36
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 27:36 - 27:37
    Are there any verses
  • 27:37 - 27:39
that we could go to that kind of show us
  • 27:39 - 27:40
    more about Jesus being sinless
  • 27:40 - 27:43
and how He was that perfect High Priest
    and sacrifice.
  • 27:43 - 27:45
    Sabina, did you have one
  • 27:45 - 27:46
    you wanted to share?
  • 27:46 - 27:47
    (Sabina) Yeah, the one verse
  • 27:47 - 27:50
that came to mind is Hebrews 7:26
  • 27:50 - 27:52
    Maybe, shall we read that?
  • 27:52 - 27:53
    Yeah, so I'll be reading
  • 27:53 - 27:56
from the New King James Version,
    and it says:
  • 28:21 - 28:23
    (Derek, Brittany) Amen.
  • 28:23 - 28:26
    (Brittany) So, here we see
    His perfect life
  • 28:26 - 28:29
    and His perfect sacrifice exemplified.
    Yes, Pedro.
  • 28:29 - 28:34
    (Pedro) I remember 2 Corinthians 6:21.
  • 28:34 - 28:36
    There it is very blunt...
  • 28:36 - 28:38
    (Derek) Chapter 5, I think,
    verse 21.
  • 28:38 - 28:41
(Pedro) Yes, 2 Corinthians chapter 5.
  • 28:41 - 28:42
    (Brittany) Let's go there.
  • 28:42 - 28:45
(Pedro) Verse 21, and I'll be reading
  • 28:45 - 28:46
from the New King James Version,
  • 28:46 - 28:49
2 Corinthians 5:21, and it says:
  • 28:49 - 28:50
    ("For He," mention of Jesus)
  • 28:58 - 29:00
We see that He had no sin,
  • 29:00 - 29:01
and He came to this world
  • 29:01 - 29:03
    and died for our sins.
  • 29:03 - 29:04
    (Brittany) Right, thank you, Pedro.
  • 29:04 - 29:08
And, Rodney, would you share with us?
  • 29:08 - 29:10
(Rodney) Yes, I'd like for us
  • 29:10 - 29:15
to look at 1 Peter 2, verses 21 and 22.
  • 29:15 - 29:17
    (Brittany) Let's go there together.
  • 29:17 - 29:18
    (Rodney) First Peter 2,
  • 29:18 - 29:19
    verses 21 and 22, I'm reading
  • 29:19 - 29:21
    from the King James Version:
  • 29:40 - 29:42
    (Brittany) Beautiful, thank you, each,
  • 29:42 - 29:43
    for sharing those promises
  • 29:43 - 29:46
that show us Jesus is our
    perfect High Priest
  • 29:46 - 29:49
    and our perfect sacrifice
    because He's sinless.
  • 29:49 - 29:51
He didn't have to offer any sacrifice
  • 29:51 - 29:53
    on behalf of Himself.
  • 29:53 - 29:55
He lived that perfect life on our behalf,
  • 29:55 - 29:57
    and then He sacrificed Himself
  • 29:57 - 29:59
so that we can have hope
  • 29:59 - 30:00
    of eternal life with Him.
  • 30:00 - 30:03
Sabina, you had something you'd like
    to share with the team.
  • 30:03 - 30:05
(Sabina) I think it's very interesting,
  • 30:05 - 30:07
at least in my version; it says
  • 30:07 - 30:10
that this was the fitting sacrifice
  • 30:10 - 30:12
or fitting High Priest for us,
  • 30:12 - 30:16
which gives a contrast as to who we are,
  • 30:16 - 30:19
really in desperate need of a Savior,
  • 30:19 - 30:21
    versus who Jesus was,
  • 30:21 - 30:23
    who was perfect, sinless.
  • 30:23 - 30:25
When it says that it is fitting for me,
  • 30:25 - 30:27
it's not because I am a good person,
  • 30:27 - 30:28
    right, that I deserve that.
  • 30:28 - 30:29
    But it's fitting for me
  • 30:29 - 30:32
    because I'm so hopeless
  • 30:32 - 30:34
that I would need Someone like Jesus
  • 30:34 - 30:36
who has all these qualities here.
  • 30:36 - 30:37
    He not only says holy,
  • 30:37 - 30:40
    he says holy, harmless, undefiled,
  • 30:40 - 30:42
    separate from sinners,
  • 30:42 - 30:44
so He needs to be all those things
  • 30:44 - 30:46
to cover up for our sins.
  • 30:46 - 30:47
And I just find it beautiful
  • 30:47 - 30:49
that it says it is fitting,
  • 30:49 - 30:51
and in His love, He comes to us
  • 30:51 - 30:53
    because we need it.
  • 30:53 - 30:55
(Brittany) That's right, so it's fitting
  • 30:55 - 30:56
    because that's our greatest need.
  • 30:56 - 30:58
Yes, Harold, did you want to add to that?
  • 30:58 - 31:01
(Harold) But He is also a fitting
    High Priest
  • 31:01 - 31:03
because He also became like one of us.
  • 31:03 - 31:05
Because, I mean, as humans, we have
  • 31:05 - 31:07
a tendency to point out to people....
  • 31:07 - 31:08
Like, we relate more with people
  • 31:08 - 31:10
who have gone through our experiences.
  • 31:10 - 31:13
Generally, if people who don't experience
    what we have experienced,
  • 31:13 - 31:17
we tend to not listen, like, "You don't
    know what you're talking about."
  • 31:17 - 31:20
I mean, obviously God knows everything.
He doesn't have to be a human.
  • 31:20 - 31:22
    It's like, "I know, I made you;
    I'm seeing."
  • 31:22 - 31:25
    But yet, He brought Himself
  • 31:25 - 31:27
    to the lowest level.
  • 31:27 - 31:28
He gave up glory to show us
  • 31:28 - 31:30
    how much He loves us.
  • 31:30 - 31:32
I mean, that is amazing love.
  • 31:32 - 31:34
It's like you telling a king,
  • 31:34 - 31:35
"Can you become a pauper today?"
  • 31:35 - 31:37
Jesus was homeless, and I don't
  • 31:37 - 31:39
know anybody who is in a high position
  • 31:39 - 31:41
    willing to become homeless
  • 31:41 - 31:43
in order to relate with each other.
  • 31:43 - 31:45
People can see, like, "Oh, wow.
  • 31:45 - 31:47
This is so-and-so; I never thought
  • 31:47 - 31:49
he would be willing to do this."
  • 31:49 - 31:51
    But, yeah, He can empathize,
  • 31:51 - 31:53
    and we can see that.
  • 31:53 - 31:54
    And we can say "Wow,
  • 31:54 - 31:56
if God is able to do this for me,
  • 31:56 - 31:57
of course, I'm going to follow Him.
  • 31:57 - 31:59
I mean, He loves me so much, why not?"
  • 31:59 - 32:00
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 32:00 - 32:02
    Thank you for sharing, Harold.
  • 32:02 - 32:05
Travis, you wanted to share something
    with our team.
  • 32:05 - 32:07
(Travis) Yes, I was just thinking
  • 32:07 - 32:09
    about the Mount of Transfiguration.
  • 32:09 - 32:11
You know, Jesus is being glorified there,
  • 32:11 - 32:13
    and then Peter steps out,
  • 32:13 - 32:15
and he wants to build a house
  • 32:15 - 32:18
    for Elijah and for Moses,
  • 32:18 - 32:20
like almost completely missing the fact
  • 32:20 - 32:22
    that it was about Jesus.
  • 32:22 - 32:23
    And then I am thinking
  • 32:23 - 32:25
about the priesthood in the same way.
  • 32:25 - 32:28
We can exalt a man, right,
  • 32:28 - 32:31
Aaron was, or Moses, or whatever kind
  • 32:31 - 32:33
    of prophet God would send.
  • 32:33 - 32:34
    But the point, I think,
  • 32:34 - 32:37
as Pastor Derek has been pointing out
  • 32:37 - 32:39
    is that it's about Jesus.
  • 32:39 - 32:41
    He was the perfect priest,
  • 32:41 - 32:42
    He was the only One
  • 32:42 - 32:44
    qualified to do the job,
  • 32:44 - 32:45
    and He could do it.
  • 32:45 - 32:48
And as men, you know, any priests
  • 32:48 - 32:50
that would have been there prior,
  • 32:50 - 32:52
    whoever it was, they would
  • 32:52 - 32:55
and did fail over and over.
  • 32:55 - 32:56
And so, Jesus, needs to be
  • 32:56 - 33:01
the center of the sacrificial system,
  • 33:01 - 33:04
and is, in the fulfillment of each thing.
  • 33:04 - 33:06
    (Brittany) That's right.
    Thank you, Travis.
  • 33:06 - 33:08
Now, another unique thing about Jesus
  • 33:08 - 33:12
is He was not sacrificed many times,
    right?
  • 33:12 - 33:14
    Every day the priests were
  • 33:14 - 33:15
    performing these sacrifices
  • 33:15 - 33:17
    on behalf of the people.
  • 33:17 - 33:19
    Many thousands and thousands
  • 33:19 - 33:20
    of animals were slaughtered
  • 33:20 - 33:22
    over the years, right?
  • 33:22 - 33:27
Why was Jesus sacrificed just once?
  • 33:27 - 33:29
Why was that the case? Yes, Sabina.
  • 33:29 - 33:30
    (Sabina) All those animals,
  • 33:30 - 33:32
and even as we read, the high priest,
  • 33:32 - 33:34
    so both the high priest
  • 33:34 - 33:36
and the sacrifice, they were imperfect.
  • 33:36 - 33:38
So, even if it was pointing
  • 33:38 - 33:41
to the perfect One, as we have read
  • 33:41 - 33:42
    and discussed before,
  • 33:42 - 33:44
    even if it was speaking
  • 33:44 - 33:47
as a shadow of the perfect things to come,
  • 33:47 - 33:48
    Jesus alone is the One
  • 33:48 - 33:50
that can be the perfect High Priest,
  • 33:50 - 33:52
    sinless, and the perfect sacrifice.
  • 33:52 - 33:54
    And that's the only sacrifice
  • 33:54 - 33:55
that can be enough to cover up
  • 33:55 - 33:57
the original sin and for the sins
  • 33:57 - 33:59
    that we carry, you know,
  • 33:59 - 34:01
since the fall of human beings.
  • 34:01 - 34:03
    (Brittany) That's right Sabina.
  • 34:03 - 34:04
And, Rod, can you share with us?
  • 34:04 - 34:06
(Rod) I really like what she just said
  • 34:06 - 34:09
and just to kind of add to that,
  • 34:09 - 34:11
there is no way that these animals
  • 34:11 - 34:13
    could actually fulfill the Law
  • 34:13 - 34:15
the way that Christ's life did.
  • 34:15 - 34:17
So, in all of these sacrifices,
  • 34:17 - 34:19
what we see is this recurring theme,
  • 34:19 - 34:20
is it's drawing attention to the Law,
  • 34:20 - 34:23
because it's the transgression of the Law
  • 34:23 - 34:25
    that's necessitating this sacrifice.
  • 34:25 - 34:26
So, it's pointing toward the Law
  • 34:26 - 34:28
    and the Lawgiver by default
  • 34:28 - 34:30
is also the center of the focus.
  • 34:30 - 34:32
And the animals can't do that,
  • 34:32 - 34:33
    but Jesus did do that.
  • 34:33 - 34:34
He came here; He fulfilled the Law.
  • 34:34 - 34:38
    He said, "I didn't come to change the Law;
I came to fulfill the Law,"
  • 34:38 - 34:39
    and that's what He did.
  • 34:39 - 34:41
(Brittany) Thank you, Rod. And, John.
  • 34:41 - 34:42
    (John) I mean, Jesus was
  • 34:42 - 34:43
    a very unique Person.
  • 34:43 - 34:45
He was God; at the same time, He was Man,
  • 34:45 - 34:48
and so His sacrifice was sufficient enough
  • 34:48 - 34:50
    that there was nothing else
  • 34:50 - 34:52
that was needed in this entire universe
  • 34:52 - 34:55
to help us escape from the penalty of sin.
  • 34:55 - 34:56
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 34:56 - 34:58
Thank you to each one of you
  • 34:58 - 35:01
    for explaining that, expounding that
    to us.
  • 35:01 - 35:02
    Jesus' sacrifice
  • 35:02 - 35:04
    was the greatest sacrifice;
  • 35:04 - 35:05
all the other ones pointed forward
  • 35:05 - 35:08
    to the ultimate sacrifice,
  • 35:08 - 35:10
and no more sacrifices are needed.
  • 35:10 - 35:12
He has already paid the price.
  • 35:12 - 35:15
Now, let's look a little bit more
  • 35:15 - 35:19
    at some verses because sometimes
  • 35:19 - 35:21
we celebrate what Jesus did for us
  • 35:21 - 35:22
    in a service we call
  • 35:22 - 35:25
    the communion service, right?
  • 35:25 - 35:26
    And whenever we partake
  • 35:26 - 35:28
    of the communion service,
  • 35:28 - 35:30
we could look at it in two different ways.
  • 35:30 - 35:33
And many times, if you look
  • 35:33 - 35:35
    at many different churches
    within Christianity,
  • 35:35 - 35:38
it is looked at in two different ways.
  • 35:38 - 35:39
So, how does Jesus want us
  • 35:39 - 35:41
to look at this communion service?
  • 35:41 - 35:44
Is it a reenactment of His death
  • 35:44 - 35:45
    over and over again,
  • 35:45 - 35:46
    or is it a remembrance
  • 35:46 - 35:48
    of His sacrifice for us?
  • 35:48 - 35:50
    Can anyone give us
  • 35:50 - 35:54
some enlightenment on that? Yes, Travis.
  • 35:54 - 35:55
    (Travis) So, the communion service
  • 35:55 - 35:57
has become something really special to me,
  • 35:57 - 35:59
    especially in my studies
  • 35:59 - 36:01
    of the book of Revelation.
  • 36:01 - 36:05
    Jesus explains in Revelation 14
  • 36:05 - 36:07
    that He doesn't want anyone
  • 36:07 - 36:09
to receive the wine of the wrath of God,
  • 36:09 - 36:12
    which is poured out of this cup;
  • 36:12 - 36:14
    that's what it talks about.
  • 36:14 - 36:15
    In the Garden of Gethsemane,
  • 36:15 - 36:18
    Jesus prays that the cup
  • 36:18 - 36:19
    might be taken away.
  • 36:19 - 36:21
Of course, there's no reply from Heaven
  • 36:21 - 36:23
because it was the only way -
  • 36:23 - 36:25
He had to drink the cup,
  • 36:25 - 36:27
which means that He suffered the wine
  • 36:27 - 36:29
of the wrath of God in our place,
  • 36:29 - 36:31
and He offers us the cup
  • 36:31 - 36:33
    of communion in return.
  • 36:33 - 36:37
    And so, communion has become
    beautiful to me,
  • 36:37 - 36:39
because it's like I get the trade,
  • 36:39 - 36:43
the blood of Jesus, for Him taking
  • 36:43 - 36:44
the wine of the wrath of God,
  • 36:44 - 36:46
which is poured out full strength.
  • 36:46 - 36:48
    And I'm thinking that's unfair;
  • 36:48 - 36:49
    He didn't deserve that,
  • 36:49 - 36:51
    and what a beautiful thing.
  • 36:51 - 36:53
So, to me, communion is special
  • 36:53 - 36:56
in the sense that it's an amazing trade
  • 36:56 - 36:58
where He gets what He didn't deserve,
  • 36:58 - 37:00
and I get what He did deserve.
  • 37:00 - 37:02
    (Brittany) Beautiful, thank you, Travis.
  • 37:02 - 37:06
Shaina, would you like to share with us?
  • 37:06 - 37:11
(Shaina) Yes, so in 1 Corinthians 11,
  • 37:11 - 37:19
    verses 23 to 26, it's recounting that...
oh, yes, I can [read it].
  • 37:19 - 37:21
    (Brittany) First Corinthians.
  • 37:21 - 37:22
    (Shaina) I'll be reading
  • 37:22 - 37:24
from the New King James Version,
  • 37:24 - 37:28
    1 Corinthians 11, verses 23 to 26:
  • 38:08 - 38:11
    And so, what I remember,
  • 38:11 - 38:15
the word "remember," and He says
  • 38:15 - 38:18
to do it "in remembrance of Me,
  • 38:18 - 38:20
    to remind yourselves
  • 38:20 - 38:22
of what I did for you."
  • 38:22 - 38:24
    And I'm also thinking
  • 38:24 - 38:27
    back to another verse
  • 38:27 - 38:28
where He also says to remember,
  • 38:28 - 38:31
and I'm thinking of the fourth commandment
  • 38:31 - 38:32
    where He says to, "Remember
  • 38:32 - 38:35
the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."
  • 38:35 - 38:39
And so, we're not honoring God
  • 38:39 - 38:43
by, you know, doing any sacrifices,
  • 38:43 - 38:45
    but we're remembering Him,
  • 38:45 - 38:46
    we're honoring Him,
  • 38:46 - 38:48
    we're obeying His Word
  • 38:48 - 38:51
    by remembering when we partake
  • 38:51 - 38:52
    of the communion,
  • 38:52 - 38:55
    when we celebrate the Sabbath.
  • 38:55 - 38:56
    (Brittany) Thank you, Shaina,
  • 38:56 - 38:58
    for those two great points.
  • 38:58 - 39:00
    Rodney, please share with us.
  • 39:00 - 39:01
    (Rodney) Just to pick up
  • 39:01 - 39:04
    from Shaina's point, God was
  • 39:04 - 39:05
    the One that instructed
  • 39:05 - 39:09
    the Israelites to look
  • 39:09 - 39:11
    at the sacrificial system
  • 39:11 - 39:14
and to perform the sacrificial system.
  • 39:14 - 39:16
And in everything that was there,
  • 39:16 - 39:19
it was a pointer to Jesus.
  • 39:19 - 39:21
    Every article, even the veil
  • 39:21 - 39:23
was a representation of the Lamb
  • 39:23 - 39:25
    that was supposed to come.
  • 39:25 - 39:26
    And here it is again
  • 39:26 - 39:27
    in the New Testament.
  • 39:27 - 39:29
    Jesus is encouraging us
  • 39:29 - 39:31
to remember, to do the communion service,
  • 39:31 - 39:32
    as we call it today,
  • 39:32 - 39:34
    in remembrance of Him.
  • 39:34 - 39:37
    And back then, unfortunately,
  • 39:37 - 39:38
    they missed the point.
  • 39:38 - 39:41
They missed the point of seeing Jesus
  • 39:41 - 39:43
    in the sanctuary system.
  • 39:43 - 39:46
And so, if we're not careful,
  • 39:46 - 39:48
we can look at all, just like
  • 39:48 - 39:50
    back in the Israelite time,
  • 39:50 - 39:51
we can look at all the form
  • 39:51 - 39:53
and how we turn the cup, and the bread,
  • 39:53 - 39:55
and where the bread should be placed,
  • 39:55 - 39:58
all the form around the service
  • 39:58 - 40:01
    rather than focusing on Jesus.
  • 40:01 - 40:04
    Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice
  • 40:04 - 40:06
    that we should really accept
  • 40:06 - 40:08
in our hearts and live today.
  • 40:08 - 40:10
So, the encouragement is for all of us
  • 40:10 - 40:11
to focus on the reason why
  • 40:11 - 40:13
    we're having the communion service,
  • 40:13 - 40:15
    which is all about Jesus.
  • 40:15 - 40:16
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 40:16 - 40:18
So, just like the Old Testament sacrifices
  • 40:18 - 40:19
    we're pointing forward to Jesus
  • 40:19 - 40:21
and were giving them a little picture
  • 40:21 - 40:22
of what He was going to do,
  • 40:22 - 40:24
    now the communion service
  • 40:24 - 40:25
is pointing back to what Jesus did
  • 40:25 - 40:27
for those of us living after the fact,
  • 40:27 - 40:28
    so that we can remember
  • 40:28 - 40:30
    what He did do, right?
  • 40:30 - 40:32
    All of it's a reminder
  • 40:32 - 40:33
    pointing forward to Jesus,
  • 40:33 - 40:34
    that ultimate sacrifice,
  • 40:34 - 40:37
that greatest gift we could ever receive.
  • 40:37 - 40:40
Now, we want to continue on in our study,
  • 40:40 - 40:42
and we're looking at the greatness
  • 40:42 - 40:43
    of Christ's sacrifice,
  • 40:43 - 40:45
which is a continuation of everything
  • 40:45 - 40:46
    we've been talking about.
  • 40:46 - 40:49
But we want to look at Hebrews, chapter 9.
  • 40:49 - 40:50
And I'm going to ask Rodney
  • 40:50 - 40:52
to read that for us, in Hebrews,
  • 40:52 - 40:58
    chapter 9, verses 22 through 28.
  • 40:58 - 40:59
    (Rodney) Hebrews, chapter 9,
  • 40:59 - 41:01
    verses 22 to 28, and I'm reading
  • 41:01 - 41:04
    from the King James Version:
  • 42:27 - 42:29
(Brittany) Amen. What a beautiful hope
  • 42:29 - 42:31
    that we have, right?
  • 42:31 - 42:33
Those of us who have accepted that gift,
  • 42:33 - 42:35
    looking forward to His returning
  • 42:35 - 42:37
where we get to see Him in person
  • 42:37 - 42:39
    and thank Him personally
  • 42:39 - 42:40
for what He's done for us, right?
  • 42:40 - 42:41
    We can thank Him today
  • 42:41 - 42:43
    when we're talking to Him,
  • 42:43 - 42:44
    but I don't know what it's going
  • 42:44 - 42:46
to be like to see Him in person
  • 42:46 - 42:47
and bow before Him and hug Him
  • 42:47 - 42:49
or however we're going to react.
  • 42:49 - 42:51
    It's going to be beautiful.
  • 42:51 - 42:53
    There are so many passages
  • 42:53 - 42:54
that we can look at in Scripture
  • 42:54 - 42:57
that show us the greatness of Jesus
  • 42:57 - 42:59
    and His sacrifice for us.
  • 42:59 - 43:01
Can any of you think of a promise
  • 43:01 - 43:03
    or passage of Scripture
  • 43:03 - 43:06
that is meaningful to you that shows you
  • 43:06 - 43:09
    how great Christ's sacrifice
    is for us? Pedro.
  • 43:09 - 43:11
    (Pedro) I am reminded
  • 43:11 - 43:13
of one of my favorite verses in the Bible
  • 43:13 - 43:22
    is 1 Corinthians 1, I'm sorry, 2...
  • 43:22 - 43:24
    (Brittany) First Corinthians, chapter 2?
  • 43:24 - 43:31
    (Pedro) Chapter 2, verses 1 to 5,
  • 43:31 - 43:33
    1 Corinthians 2, verses 1 to 5.
  • 43:33 - 43:35
(Brittany) Please read that for us.
  • 43:35 - 43:37
    (Pedro) Yes, and it says:
  • 44:13 - 44:15
Now, when looking to this verse here,
  • 44:15 - 44:18
I see the importance of focusing on Jesus.
  • 44:18 - 44:21
Verse 2 is my favorite verse there.
  • 44:21 - 44:22
It's just to focus on Jesus.
  • 44:22 - 44:24
Paul was determined not to know anything
  • 44:24 - 44:26
among the people other than Jesus Christ
  • 44:26 - 44:28
    and Him crucified because Christ
  • 44:28 - 44:29
was the center of his life.
  • 44:29 - 44:31
He's looking at Jesus and saying,
  • 44:31 - 44:32
"He died for me; I want
  • 44:32 - 44:34
to die for Him, as well."
  • 44:34 - 44:36
    (Brittany) Thank you, Pedro,
    beautiful passage.
  • 44:36 - 44:38
    Anyone else have a passage
  • 44:38 - 44:39
that they would like to share
  • 44:39 - 44:40
    about the greatness
  • 44:40 - 44:42
    of Christ's sacrifice? John.
  • 44:42 - 44:44
    (John) Revelation, chapter 5,
  • 44:44 - 44:46
    verses 8 through 14,
  • 44:46 - 44:48
talk about why Jesus is worthy.
  • 44:48 - 44:50
Often the book of Revelation is only seen
  • 44:50 - 44:53
    as symbols and scary beasts,
  • 44:53 - 44:55
    but it centers once again
  • 44:55 - 44:58
around Jesus and His ministry for us.
  • 44:58 - 45:01
    So, Revelation, chapter 5,
  • 45:01 - 45:03
verses 8 through 14, tell us,
  • 45:03 - 45:06
and I'm reading from the English Standard
    Version:
  • 46:22 - 46:23
    (Brittany) What a beautiful picture.
  • 46:23 - 46:25
    That's the greatest worship service
  • 46:25 - 46:27
    we can ever imagine, right?
  • 46:27 - 46:29
    Our little worship services
  • 46:29 - 46:31
in our little churches or our homes
  • 46:31 - 46:32
are just a tiny little picture
  • 46:32 - 46:37
    of this beautiful, immeasurable
    worship service
  • 46:37 - 46:41
of our King of kings, who died for us,
    in Heaven.
  • 46:41 - 46:42
    And one day we'll get
  • 46:42 - 46:44
to join them, right, before the throne,
  • 46:44 - 46:46
    and that will be amazing.
  • 46:46 - 46:48
There are so many other passages
  • 46:48 - 46:49
    that we could look at
  • 46:49 - 46:51
that show us the greatness of Jesus
  • 46:51 - 46:53
    and His sacrifice for us.
  • 46:53 - 46:55
And the whole point of it
  • 46:55 - 46:57
is because God wants to show us
  • 46:57 - 46:59
    the immeasurable and unfailing love
  • 46:59 - 47:01
that He has for each one of us.
  • 47:01 - 47:02
    And there's a passage I'd love
  • 47:02 - 47:05
for us to read in Romans, chapter 5,
  • 47:05 - 47:06
and I'm going to ask Rod
  • 47:06 - 47:08
to read that for us in Romans,
  • 47:08 - 47:12
    chapter 5, verses 6 through 8.
  • 47:12 - 47:14
And it's just amazing because we think
  • 47:14 - 47:17
    about how people will sacrifice
  • 47:17 - 47:21
    for someone that they love
  • 47:21 - 47:22
    and someone who's done
  • 47:22 - 47:23
    kind things for them,
  • 47:23 - 47:25
but we're going to see that Jesus
  • 47:25 - 47:28
goes above and beyond that call.
  • 47:28 - 47:29
Rod, would you read that for us?
  • 47:29 - 47:32
(Rod) Romans, chapter 5, and what were
    the verses?
  • 47:32 - 47:33
    (Brittany) 6 through 8.
  • 47:33 - 47:35
(Rod) 6 to 8, from the King James Version,
    It says:
  • 47:54 - 47:56
    (Brittany) What a beautiful picture
  • 47:56 - 47:57
    of the love of Jesus
  • 47:57 - 48:00
for each one of us, right?
  • 48:00 - 48:02
Rod, you're part of the military, right?
  • 48:02 - 48:04
And you have served your country
  • 48:04 - 48:08
in protecting people who are good people,
  • 48:08 - 48:09
people who are not good people, right,
  • 48:09 - 48:12
but you've been on the call of duty,
  • 48:12 - 48:14
and I think of this verse
    tying in with that.
  • 48:14 - 48:17
You know, scarcely for a righteous person
  • 48:17 - 48:20
would someone die, but Jesus looked at us
  • 48:20 - 48:22
when we were rebelling against Him,
  • 48:22 - 48:25
when we were His enemies, and died for us.
  • 48:25 - 48:28
And I'm just reminded of how you served
  • 48:28 - 48:30
your country so well, and how Jesus
  • 48:30 - 48:32
is even a greater example of that.
  • 48:32 - 48:34
    (Rod) Better example.
  • 48:34 - 48:35
    (Brittany) Yes, that's right.
  • 48:35 - 48:38
Travis, would you like to add to that?
  • 48:38 - 48:42
(Travis) This is just a beautiful picture
    of God's love
  • 48:42 - 48:44
for each and every one of us.
  • 48:44 - 48:46
    And I'm sitting here thinking,
  • 48:46 - 48:48
many times I've come across people
  • 48:48 - 48:50
    who are struggling with sins,
  • 48:50 - 48:52
    struggling with many things.
  • 48:52 - 48:54
And the question is always asked,
  • 48:54 - 48:55
    "Well, what should I do?"
  • 48:55 - 48:58
or, "What can I do?" as if they
  • 48:58 - 49:00
have to do something to earn God's favor.
  • 49:00 - 49:03
And so, I always tell them,
  • 49:03 - 49:05
    and I reiterate to myself
  • 49:05 - 49:06
    when I do tell them,
  • 49:06 - 49:08
    is that you don't have to earn it;
  • 49:08 - 49:10
    you already have it.
  • 49:10 - 49:12
    Jesus loved us while we
    were still sinners.
  • 49:12 - 49:17
You don't ever have to wonder
    if God loves,
  • 49:17 - 49:19
no viewer, myself, any of us,
  • 49:19 - 49:20
    we don't have to wonder.
  • 49:20 - 49:22
    God already does love us.
  • 49:22 - 49:24
    Nothing can separate us
  • 49:24 - 49:25
    from the love of God,
  • 49:25 - 49:27
    which is in Christ Jesus.
  • 49:27 - 49:28
    And that's a beautiful picture.
  • 49:28 - 49:30
    (Brittany) That's right; thank you
  • 49:30 - 49:31
    for sharing that, Travis,
  • 49:31 - 49:33
because there are many of us
  • 49:33 - 49:35
who are struggling, thinking that we
  • 49:35 - 49:36
    have to do something
  • 49:36 - 49:38
    to clean ourselves up first
  • 49:38 - 49:40
or make ourselves acceptable before God,
  • 49:40 - 49:42
but He says, "No, I already died for you
  • 49:42 - 49:44
    in your sinful state."
  • 49:44 - 49:46
(Derek) And just to add to that,
  • 49:46 - 49:49
we already have it if we accept it.
  • 49:49 - 49:50
    So, you started, Brittany,
  • 49:50 - 49:52
at the very beginning of our study
  • 49:52 - 49:55
    saying maybe someone's watching today,
  • 49:55 - 49:57
    saying, "I need a Savior."
  • 49:57 - 49:59
    And the answer is salvation
  • 49:59 - 50:01
    is available through Jesus,
  • 50:01 - 50:04
but we have to accept that gift.
  • 50:04 - 50:06
That's the choice we have to make.
  • 50:06 - 50:08
(Brittany) And that's the last part
  • 50:08 - 50:09
    of our lesson together.
  • 50:09 - 50:11
    What are the consequences
  • 50:11 - 50:14
if I choose to reject that gift?
  • 50:14 - 50:16
What would happen if I do not accept
  • 50:16 - 50:20
that immeasurable, unfailing love of God?
  • 50:20 - 50:22
So, let's look at a few verses.
  • 50:22 - 50:24
Let's go to Hebrews in chapter 2,
  • 50:24 - 50:26
verses 1 through 4, and Shaina,
  • 50:26 - 50:27
would you please read that for us,
  • 50:27 - 50:33
    Hebrews, chapter 2, verses 1 through 4.
  • 50:33 - 50:35
    (Shaina) Hebrews 2, verses 1 to 4,
  • 50:35 - 50:36
    and I'll be reading
  • 50:36 - 50:38
from the New King James Version:
  • 51:18 - 51:19
    (Brittany) So, what stands out
  • 51:19 - 51:22
    to you in that verse?
  • 51:22 - 51:24
What would happen if we do not
  • 51:24 - 51:29
    accept Jesus, the greatest sacrifice?
    Yes, Harold.
  • 51:29 - 51:31
    (Harold) Death, I mean,
  • 51:31 - 51:32
the wages of sin is death,
  • 51:32 - 51:33
and if we want to cling to that,
  • 51:33 - 51:34
    that is killing us,
  • 51:34 - 51:36
in the end, we will cease to exist.
  • 51:36 - 51:38
    (Brittany) Yes, definitely.
  • 51:38 - 51:40
(Derek) And also, Brittany, I think
  • 51:40 - 51:42
    the onlooking universe,
  • 51:42 - 51:44
and sadly, even those of us,
  • 51:44 - 51:45
it may be a loved one
  • 51:45 - 51:47
    who chooses to walk away,
  • 51:47 - 51:50
that we will confess, "God, there is
  • 51:50 - 51:53
nothing else that You could have done.
  • 51:53 - 51:56
    You did everything, even miracles,
  • 51:56 - 51:58
    signs and wonders, to reveal
  • 51:58 - 52:00
    Your grace and love."
  • 52:00 - 52:04
But that person had a choice to make.
  • 52:04 - 52:06
(Brittany) That's right, and what I loved
  • 52:06 - 52:07
    about that passage in Hebrews,
  • 52:07 - 52:10
it showed us, it mentioned an escape,
  • 52:10 - 52:12
    the only way of escape.
  • 52:12 - 52:13
And I think about, you know,
  • 52:13 - 52:15
    we're in this world of sin;
    it's crumbling.
  • 52:15 - 52:16
    It's almost like we're
  • 52:16 - 52:18
    in a burning building,
  • 52:18 - 52:20
and there is only one way out.
  • 52:20 - 52:22
And Jesus is that escape plan.
  • 52:22 - 52:25
He is the only way out,
  • 52:25 - 52:27
and He has already done everything
  • 52:27 - 52:29
    for us to be rescued.
  • 52:29 - 52:32
But we just have to hold onto His hand
    as He leads us
  • 52:32 - 52:34
out of this burning building, right?
  • 52:34 - 52:35
And he's going to lead us
  • 52:35 - 52:37
to a brand new world, and we're not going
  • 52:37 - 52:40
to be in another burning building someday.
    Yes, Rod.
  • 52:40 - 52:42
(Rod) You actually bring up a good point.
  • 52:42 - 52:43
    There is a time coming
  • 52:43 - 52:45
where there will be a heat,
  • 52:45 - 52:46
where the rocks and the elements
  • 52:46 - 52:47
    will even melt away.
  • 52:47 - 52:49
There is a fire that's coming,
  • 52:49 - 52:50
    and the only escape
  • 52:50 - 52:53
is to be in that city with Jesus.
  • 52:53 - 52:54
    That's our only chance;
  • 52:54 - 52:56
    that's our only hope.
  • 52:56 - 52:57
    And whatever the devil
  • 52:57 - 52:58
    could possibly offer you
  • 52:58 - 53:00
    cannot possibly withstand
  • 53:00 - 53:01
    that kind of power.
  • 53:01 - 53:03
You have to choose the only side
  • 53:03 - 53:05
that's going to give you salvation,
  • 53:05 - 53:07
like Harold said, or you're going to die.
  • 53:07 - 53:09
I mean, there is just no other way.
  • 53:09 - 53:11
There is no other name that can
    save you other than Jesus.
  • 53:11 - 53:13
    (Brittany) Thank you, Rod.
  • 53:13 - 53:14
Pedro, did you want to add to that?
  • 53:14 - 53:16
(Pedro) Yes, and I see the beauty of God.
  • 53:16 - 53:19
God says, "I paid for all your sins."
  • 53:19 - 53:21
All of our sins have been paid for.
  • 53:21 - 53:25
There is no sin that is not paid
    at the cross.
  • 53:25 - 53:26
    And God is saying, "Now,
  • 53:26 - 53:27
    I'll give you My judgment,
  • 53:27 - 53:29
    and the judgment is going
  • 53:29 - 53:32
to be between choosing life in Me,
  • 53:32 - 53:34
    or continue in death,
  • 53:34 - 53:37
which is the condition that you are in."
  • 53:37 - 53:39
So, we have to choose, and God is saying,
  • 53:39 - 53:40
"I want you to choose Me."
  • 53:40 - 53:42
That's what the judgment is all about,
  • 53:42 - 53:44
"Choose Me," "Choose Me," "Choose Me,"
  • 53:44 - 53:46
and we come, and we choose Him
  • 53:46 - 53:48
because He is a loving Savior.
  • 53:48 - 53:49
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 53:49 - 53:52
    Travis, please share with us.
  • 53:52 - 53:53
    (Travis) So, in Revelation,
  • 53:53 - 53:55
the end of Revelation, chapter 6,
  • 53:55 - 53:57
it's describing the coming of Jesus,
  • 53:57 - 54:00
and it says, "Who is able to stand?"
  • 54:00 - 54:02
    The question is asked,
  • 54:02 - 54:03
    "Who is able to stand?"
  • 54:03 - 54:05
You're talking about fire and escape,
  • 54:05 - 54:10
and if we continue reading on in 7,
  • 54:10 - 54:12
John says, "I looked, and I saw
  • 54:12 - 54:15
    a multitude of every nation,
  • 54:15 - 54:16
    tribe and tongue and people,
  • 54:16 - 54:18
    and they had clothed themselves
  • 54:18 - 54:22
with the righteous robe of Jesus Christ."
  • 54:22 - 54:23
    And I'm sitting here thinking,
  • 54:23 - 54:25
    we can escape always
  • 54:25 - 54:27
when we take Jesus at His Word.
  • 54:27 - 54:29
It's not about us; it's about Jesus,
  • 54:29 - 54:30
    and when we clothe ourselves
  • 54:30 - 54:32
    with His righteousness,
  • 54:32 - 54:33
we will be able to stand,
  • 54:33 - 54:35
we will be able to escape.
  • 54:35 - 54:36
    (Brittany) That's right.
  • 54:36 - 54:37
    Thank you for reminding us
  • 54:37 - 54:40
of that promise in that passage, Travis.
  • 54:40 - 54:43
Rodney, please share with us, and then
we're going to have to wrap up,
  • 54:43 - 54:46
    because there's so much more
    on this topic, go ahead.
  • 54:46 - 54:47
(Rodney) I was just following up
  • 54:47 - 54:48
    on what Rod was saying
  • 54:48 - 54:50
    a little bit earlier.
  • 54:50 - 54:52
    In Revelation 20, we're going
  • 54:52 - 54:54
to be in one of two spots.
  • 54:54 - 54:57
We're going to be in that city descending,
  • 54:57 - 54:59
or we'll be around that city
  • 54:59 - 55:01
    like sands of the sea.
  • 55:01 - 55:03
And what Jesus is saying to us is,
  • 55:03 - 55:07
"Come to Me; I will save you,
  • 55:07 - 55:09
and you will be in that city
  • 55:09 - 55:10
    if you accept Me.
  • 55:10 - 55:11
    But if you will not,
  • 55:11 - 55:13
if you do not accept Me,
  • 55:13 - 55:15
you'll be like the sands of the sea.
  • 55:15 - 55:17
And Revelation 20 tells us what happens
  • 55:17 - 55:21
to those that are outside of the city.
  • 55:21 - 55:23
Essentially fire will consume all of them.
  • 55:23 - 55:26
    So, we encourage each other
  • 55:26 - 55:28
that we will choose Jesus today
  • 55:28 - 55:29
    and be in that city.
  • 55:29 - 55:32
(Derek) And I just want to share that text
  • 55:32 - 55:33
    that God is not willing
  • 55:33 - 55:35
    that any should perish,
  • 55:35 - 55:37
so that tells me, Brittany, that God
  • 55:37 - 55:40
doesn't want anyone outside the city.
  • 55:40 - 55:43
People have this distorted view of God
  • 55:43 - 55:47
that Satan has propagated or promoted
  • 55:47 - 55:49
    that God is vengeful.
  • 55:49 - 55:50
    If God didn't care,
  • 55:50 - 55:53
the plan of salvation wouldn't even exist.
  • 55:53 - 55:56
But He loves us with an immeasurable
    and unfailing love.
  • 55:56 - 55:59
    He wants us to repent
  • 55:59 - 56:01
and to get inside the city.
  • 56:01 - 56:02
    (Brittany) That's right; He wants
  • 56:02 - 56:04
to spend eternity with you and me.
  • 56:04 - 56:06
    That's His ultimate goal,
  • 56:06 - 56:08
and that's why He set in motion
  • 56:08 - 56:09
this whole plan of salvation, right?
  • 56:09 - 56:11
    That's why He was willing
  • 56:11 - 56:13
to give Himself, the greatest gift,
  • 56:13 - 56:15
because He loves us so much.
  • 56:15 - 56:17
So, as we wrap up our study,
  • 56:17 - 56:19
I just pray for each one of us
  • 56:19 - 56:21
that we will accept that gift.
  • 56:21 - 56:22
He's holding it out to us.
  • 56:22 - 56:24
He's saying, "I gave everything for you.
  • 56:24 - 56:26
    Please, just accept Me,
  • 56:26 - 56:28
and you can live with Me forever."
  • 56:28 - 56:30
Would you pray for us, Pastor Derek?
  • 56:30 - 56:32
(Derek) Thank you so much, Brittany.
  • 56:32 - 56:34
What a powerful study, I just want
  • 56:34 - 56:35
to use my favorite Hebrew word.
  • 56:35 - 56:37
    (Derek, Team) Hallelujah!
  • 56:37 - 56:40
(Derek) I don't know about you,
  • 56:40 - 56:42
maybe you're watching, I have a loved one
  • 56:42 - 56:45
    who has rejected Jesus,
  • 56:45 - 56:46
    and I'm just praying
  • 56:46 - 56:49
while there's still time that he will
  • 56:49 - 56:51
    accept the grace of God.
  • 56:51 - 56:53
    I'm encouraged by the testimony
  • 56:53 - 56:54
    of a dying thief, "Lord,
  • 56:54 - 56:57
will You remember me when You come
  • 56:57 - 56:59
    in Your Kingdom?"
  • 56:59 - 57:01
    You say, "Derek, that's me!
  • 57:01 - 57:07
I've been trying to sit on the fence."
  • 57:07 - 57:09
I just want to appeal to you today,
  • 57:09 - 57:10
    while you're hearing
  • 57:10 - 57:12
    of the immeasurable, unfailing love
    of God,
  • 57:12 - 57:16
    to say, "Jesus, save me,"
    "Jesus, save me."
  • 57:16 - 57:21
And the amazing and beautiful truth
    is He will.
  • 57:21 - 57:24
He's able to save to the uttermost
  • 57:24 - 57:27
all who come to Him in faith.
