ABC Nightline - IDEO Shopping Cart

  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
    Tonight the deep dive
  • Not Synced
One company's secret weapon for innovation.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
we went to IDEO product design folk
  • Not Synced
and said take something old and familiar like say
  • Not Synced
the shopping cart and completely redesign it for us
  • Not Synced
    in just five days.
  • Not Synced
ABC correspondent Jack Smith tells us
  • Not Synced
    what happened next.
  • Not Synced
    9 in the morning,
  • Not Synced
    day one
  • Not Synced
and these people have a deadline to meet.
  • Not Synced
So welcome to the kick off of the shopping cart project.
  • Not Synced
This is Palo Alto, California in the heart of Silicon valley
  • Not Synced
and these are designers at IDEO
  • Not Synced
probably the most influential product development firm in the world.
  • Not Synced
IDEO has designed everything from high tech medical equipment,
  • Not Synced
25 foot mechanical whale from the movie Free Willy
  • Not Synced
and the first computer mouse for apple.
  • Not Synced
Smith Ski goggles, Mike sunglasses, NEC computer screens.
  • Not Synced
Hundreds of products we take for granted.
  • Not Synced
The point is we're not actually experts at
  • Not Synced
    any given are,
  • Not Synced
we're kind of experts on the process of how you design stuff,
  • Not Synced
so we don't care if you give us a tooth brush,
  • Not Synced
    a tooth paste tube,
  • Not Synced
    a tractor, a space shuttle,
  • Not Synced
    you know a chair,
  • Not Synced
it's all the same to us,
  • Not Synced
we like want to figure out how to innovate
  • Not Synced
by using our process and applying it.
  • Not Synced
Project leader, is Peter Skillman a 25 year old Standford engineer.
  • Not Synced
Project leader because he's good with groups
  • Not Synced
    not because of seniority.
  • Not Synced
He's only been at IDEO for 6 years.
  • Not Synced
the rest of the team is eclectic.
  • Not Synced
    But that's typical here.
  • Not Synced
    Whitney Mordimore, Harvard MBA.
  • Not Synced
    Peter Claughmen, Linguist,
  • Not Synced
Tom Kelley, Dave's brother, marketing expert,
  • Not Synced
    Jane Fultonsury, psychologist.
  • Not Synced
Alex Casacks, 26, a biology major.
  • Not Synced
Whose turned down medical school 3 times
  • Not Synced
because he's having too much fun at IDEO.
  • Not Synced
Safety emerges early as an important issue.
  • Not Synced
    22,000 child injuries a year,
  • Not Synced
which is, so they're hospitalized injuries
  • Not Synced
I mean there are many others.
  • Not Synced
    An theft.
  • Not Synced
It turns out, a lot of carts are stolen.
  • Not Synced
    As the team works,
  • Not Synced
it becomes clear there are no titles here,
  • Not Synced
    no permanent assignments.
  • Not Synced
    And the other side says,
  • Not Synced
gives us a lot help says, be safe.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughing)
  • Not Synced
I'll give you a big red ball on a
  • Not Synced
on a post and that says you're a big guy.
  • Not Synced
    If you got a ball,
  • Not Synced
    you're senior vice president.
  • Not Synced
You know, what do I care,
  • Not Synced
of the death, the red ball it's all the same.
  • Not Synced
In a very innovative culture you can't have a kind of hierarchy
  • Not Synced
like here's the boss, and the next person down and the next person down.
  • Not Synced
Because it's impossible that the boss is the one who had the insightful experience
  • Not Synced
    with shopping carts,
  • Not Synced
    it's just not possible.
  • Not Synced
    The team splits into groups,
  • Not Synced
to find out first hand what the people who use,
  • Not Synced
make, and repair shopping carts think.
  • Not Synced
    Okay go.
  • Not Synced
Problem with the classic cart is the wind catches it.
  • Not Synced
And these things have been clocked at 35 across the parking lot.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughing)
  • Not Synced
Man, that's actually a pretty good point.
  • Not Synced
The trick is to find these
  • Not Synced
real experts so that you can learn much more quickly
  • Not Synced
than you could by jut kind of doing it the normal way.
  • Not Synced
and just kind of learn about it yourself.
  • Not Synced
From everything I read these things aren't that safe either.
  • Not Synced
    You know.
  • Not Synced
So.. probably, the seat itself is going to have to be redesigned.
  • Not Synced
One of the interesting things for me,
  • Not Synced
is how people really don't like to let go
  • Not Synced
    of the cat,
  • Not Synced
    except for the professional shopper.
  • Not Synced
Whose strategy is to leave the cart at various places.
  • Not Synced
    3:30 in the afternoon,
  • Not Synced
and the group is back at IDEO.
  • Not Synced
    There is no let up.
  • Not Synced
Each team is going to demonstrate,
  • Not Synced
and communicate and share everything that they've learned today.
  • Not Synced
A shopping cart has been clocked at 35 miles an hour,
  • Not Synced
traveling through a parking lot in the wind.
  • Not Synced
We were in the store, what two hours,
  • Not Synced
and it was truly frightening just to see the stuff that was going on.
  • Not Synced
You got to designate some people
  • Not Synced
to make damn sure that the store owners point of view is represented.
  • Not Synced
    After 9 straight hours,
  • Not Synced
    the team is tired.
  • Not Synced
    They call it a day.
  • Not Synced
    So uh-- is everyone cool?
  • Not Synced
    That's good, thanks a lot.
  • Not Synced
I had a great time today.
  • Not Synced
    (Clapping)
  • Not Synced
IDEO's mantra for innovation is written everywhere.
  • Not Synced
    One conversation at a time,
  • Not Synced
    stay focused,
  • Not Synced
    encourage wild ideas,
  • Not Synced
    defer judgment,
  • Not Synced
build on the ideas of others.
  • Not Synced
That's the hardest thing for people do,
  • Not Synced
is to restrain themselves from the
  • Not Synced
    criticizing of an idea
  • Not Synced
so if anybody starts to nail an idea they get the bell.
  • Not Synced
    (Ding)
  • Not Synced
The ideas are poured out and are posted on the walls.
  • Not Synced
On the blind, the privacy blind
  • Not Synced
like when you're buying 6 cases of condoms
  • Not Synced
    no one sees.
  • Not Synced
    A dozen nests,
  • Not Synced
we don't have a solution for this.
  • Not Synced
    Organized kit,
  • Not Synced
it's not organized, what it is, is focused chaos.
  • Not Synced
    Vote with your post it,
  • Not Synced
not with an idea that's cool,
  • Not Synced
but with an idea that's cool and build able.
  • Not Synced
If it's too far out there,
  • Not Synced
and it can't be built in a day,
  • Not Synced
then I don't think we should vote on it.
  • Not Synced
    In lighten trial and error,
  • Not Synced
succeeds over the planning of the lone genius.
  • Not Synced
    In lighten trial and error,
  • Not Synced
succeeds over the planning of the lone genius.
  • Not Synced
If anything sums up IDEO's approach,
  • Not Synced
    that is it.
  • Not Synced
Worried that the team is drifting,
  • Not Synced
what can only be called a group of self appointed adults,
  • Not Synced
    under Dave Kelley,
  • Not Synced
    holds an informal side session.
  • Not Synced
    4 or 5 people, 4 or 5 teams
  • Not Synced
and we give each team a neat area.
  • Not Synced
    It becomes very autocratic,
  • Not Synced
through a very shot period of time
  • Not Synced
in defining what things people are going to work on.
  • Not Synced
If you don't work under time constraints,
  • Not Synced
you could never get anything done because it's a messy process that could go on forever.
  • Not Synced
    Back at the shop,
  • Not Synced
it is 6 o clock before mock ups are ready for showing.
  • Not Synced
Baskets also can be if you think you will have more volume,
  • Not Synced
    baskets can be put in.
  • Not Synced
    A modular shopping cart ,
  • Not Synced
you pile hand baskets on to.
  • Not Synced
    A high tech cart,
  • Not Synced
that gets you through the traffic jam at check out.
  • Not Synced
You could mount a scanner on the shopping cart,
  • Not Synced
so that you as the customer as you pull it off the shelf,
  • Not Synced
    would scan each item.
  • Not Synced
One that's built around child safety.
  • Not Synced
And another that let's shoppes talk to the super market staff remotely.
  • Not Synced
Yeah, where can I find the yoghourt?
  • Not Synced
But the adults, again, decide more work needs to be done
  • Not Synced
before the mock ups can be combined into one last prototype.
  • Not Synced
Why don't we have all the carts come up here for a second.
  • Not Synced
I think you take a piece of each one of these ideas,
  • Not Synced
and kind of back it off a little bit
  • Not Synced
and then put it in the design.
  • Not Synced
the design is still not there.
  • Not Synced
But there's another manta at IDEO,
  • Not Synced
fail often, in order to succeed sooner.
  • Not Synced
And some of the team would be up by half the night,
  • Not Synced
trying to put together a design
  • Not Synced
    that finally does work.
  • Not Synced
    There it is!
  • Not Synced
    (Cheering)
  • Not Synced
So we took the best elements out of each prototype.
  • Not Synced
The cart which is designed to cost about the same as today's cart,
  • Not Synced
is different in every other way.
  • Not Synced
    what do you think?
  • Not Synced
(Laughing) I'm very proud of the team,
  • Not Synced
    I think it's great.
  • Not Synced
    Does this work for you?
  • Not Synced
    Works for me great.
  • Not Synced
    It's also beautiful.
  • Not Synced
The carts wheels turn 90 degrees, so i can move sideways,
  • Not Synced
no more lifting up the rear in a tight spot.
  • Not Synced
And you shop in a totally different way.
  • Not Synced
the bags are hung on hooks,
  • Not Synced
    on the carts frame,
  • Not Synced
remember there is no basket here.
  • Not Synced
At first, I was a little shocked,
  • Not Synced
but I think you have some fantastic ideas here.
  • Not Synced
It needs little refining but I think it's great,
  • Not Synced
I mean we would want them.
  • Not Synced
she also gave us some really good comments about how we could make this thing better.
  • Not Synced
A lot of hours also an open mind,
  • Not Synced
a boss who demands fresh ideas
  • Not Synced
be corky and clash with his,
  • Not Synced
a belief that chaos can be constructive and team work.
  • Not Synced
A great deal of team work.
  • Not Synced
And these are the recipe for our innovation takes place.
  • Not Synced
This is Jack Smith from nightlife Palo Alto, California.
