MASSIVE Neoholothele incei Communal Enclosure Build

  • 0:00 - 0:02
now before you lose your minds and go
  • 0:02 - 0:04
crazy down in my comments hear me out
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    first
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    [Music]
  • 0:08 - 0:10
welcome to the tarantula collective my
  • 0:10 - 0:12
name is richard and today we are setting
  • 0:12 - 0:15
up a large communal for the nia hetheli
  • 0:15 - 0:16
nc now if you've been around the
  • 0:16 - 0:18
tarantula hobby for a while you know
  • 0:18 - 0:20
that there are a few species of
  • 0:20 - 0:22
tarantula that can be kept communally
  • 0:22 - 0:23
the most popular of course is the
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    monosyntrophys balfouri or the socotra
  • 0:25 - 0:27
island blue baboon they seem to do very
  • 0:27 - 0:29
well in communals but they can be kind
  • 0:29 - 0:31
of expensive another popular species is
  • 0:31 - 0:33
the postal ethereum metallica but again
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    they're a little pricey and it's a
  • 0:35 - 0:37
little iffy on whether they're communal
  • 0:37 - 0:39
or they just tolerate being in close
  • 0:39 - 0:41
proximity but there is one species out
  • 0:41 - 0:42
there that the hobby seems to kind of be
  • 0:42 - 0:44
split down the middle some say it's not
  • 0:44 - 0:46
a communal species others have had some
  • 0:46 - 0:48
pretty good luck with them now recently
  • 0:48 - 0:50
i recorded a podcast with dr linda rayer
  • 0:50 - 0:52
she is a professor in the entomology
  • 0:52 - 0:54
department of cornell university and she
  • 0:54 - 0:57
specializes in social spiders during our
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    conversation i brought up communal
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    tarantula species you need neopolithila
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    insane that's a communal i've always
  • 1:04 - 1:06
been a little cautious about i'm glad to
  • 1:06 - 1:07
hear that you've been having so much
  • 1:07 - 1:08
success but i think there's like two or
  • 1:08 - 1:10
three guys that i saw on youtube that
  • 1:10 - 1:12
tried to keep him communally and it went
  • 1:12 - 1:13
bad and they end up separating them back
  • 1:13 - 1:15
out and like lost half of them but i saw
  • 1:15 - 1:17
when i was in virginia beach tanya was
  • 1:17 - 1:18
having a lot of success with with her
  • 1:18 - 1:20
communal there they came for me i have
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    enough to populate the us
  • 1:24 - 1:26
right now i might have to hit you up
  • 1:26 - 1:27
because i think i've only got one right
  • 1:27 - 1:29
now one little individual hanging out
  • 1:29 - 1:34
and seriously if you want nc i got nc
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    okay
  • 1:35 - 1:37
you just cover the shipping and i will
  • 1:37 - 1:38
send them to you not miss you that
  • 1:38 - 1:40
sounds like a good deal i think it'd be
  • 1:40 - 1:42
fun to have a an nc communal down here
  • 1:42 - 1:44
now if you'd like to hear the entire
  • 1:44 - 1:45
podcast i will be sure to link it at the
  • 1:45 - 1:47
end of this video but she sent me a
  • 1:47 - 1:49
communal in the mail and they just
  • 1:49 - 1:51
arrived today there's probably about 15
  • 1:51 - 1:54
or 16 nia hetheli insist in here uh
  • 1:54 - 1:56
looks like there's some adults some
  • 1:56 - 1:58
juvies i even think i saw a little
  • 1:58 - 1:59
spiderling walking around now before we
  • 1:59 - 2:01
go any further i want to take a second
  • 2:01 - 2:03

  • 2:47 - 2:49
    microwilderness.com get yourself some
  • 2:49 - 2:51
new tarantulas and tell wilderness nate
  • 2:51 - 2:53
that the tarantula collective sent you
  • 2:53 - 2:54
now i gave her a call we talked on the
  • 2:54 - 2:56
phone for a little bit i really wanted
  • 2:56 - 2:58
to pick her brain to figure out what
  • 2:58 - 3:00
type of enclosure i should use because
  • 3:00 - 3:02
searching on google you see amongst the
  • 3:02 - 3:04
people who do keep them communally
  • 3:04 - 3:06
there's still some conflict as to how
  • 3:06 - 3:08
best to set them up some suggest they
  • 3:08 - 3:10
need to be kind of kept compactly in a
  • 3:10 - 3:11
small enclosure that way they don't get
  • 3:11 - 3:13
territorial and fight others say they
  • 3:13 - 3:15
need a large enclosure so they have
  • 3:15 - 3:17
plenty of room to spread out so i went
  • 3:17 - 3:19
straight to the source and talked to dr
  • 3:19 - 3:21
rayer and she suggested that i put them
  • 3:21 - 3:23
all in one large enclosure and keep them
  • 3:23 - 3:26
similarly to how she has her enclosure
  • 3:26 - 3:28
set up she provides plenty of hides as
  • 3:28 - 3:29
well as a lot of vertical cork bars so
  • 3:29 - 3:31
they have plenty of anchor points for
  • 3:31 - 3:32
webbing their tunnels but we'll get more
  • 3:32 - 3:34
into that in a second right now we're
  • 3:34 - 3:36
going to set up this enclosure and get
  • 3:36 - 3:38
these spiders moved into their new home
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    now i'm using a large exoterra 18 by 18
  • 3:41 - 3:43
by 24 enclosure i'm going to set it up
  • 3:43 - 3:45
semi-arborally so they do have plenty of
  • 3:45 - 3:47
substrate to burrow but there's gonna be
  • 3:47 - 3:49
a whole lot of room for them to web up
  • 3:49 - 3:51
and kind of give each other space and to
  • 3:51 - 3:53
take things up a notch i'm gonna set it
  • 3:53 - 3:54
up bioactively as well that wasn't
  • 3:54 - 3:56
really my intention from the beginning
  • 3:56 - 3:58
but i had a whole bunch of like half
  • 3:58 - 4:00
empty bags of substrate i had half of a
  • 4:00 - 4:02
large bag of ruptur soil i had some
  • 4:02 - 4:05
jungle mix and i had some bio dude tara
  • 4:05 - 4:07
sahara substrate there's no rhyme or
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    reason to it i didn't i didn't do this
  • 4:09 - 4:11
intentionally i'm not suggesting this is
  • 4:11 - 4:12
the best substrate for this species it's
  • 4:12 - 4:14
literally just the open bags i had
  • 4:14 - 4:15
laying around that build up the
  • 4:15 - 4:17
enclosure but since i'm using that
  • 4:17 - 4:19
biodude substrate i mean it's dirt but
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    it isn't dirt cheap huh
  • 4:21 - 4:23
ah what do you know it's a bioactive
  • 4:23 - 4:24
substrate and i didn't want to waste it
  • 4:24 - 4:26
so i threw in some springtails and some
  • 4:26 - 4:28
dwarf isopods and took some clippings
  • 4:28 - 4:30
from the plants and my other bioactive
  • 4:30 - 4:32
enclosures to plant and hopefully this
  • 4:32 - 4:34
is going to be a beautiful setup now
  • 4:34 - 4:36
luckily i just got in a large bulk
  • 4:36 - 4:37
shipment of cork bark and if you want to
  • 4:37 - 4:39
see where i got it from i'll link that
  • 4:39 - 4:41
video up above so we're going to go
  • 4:41 - 4:43
ahead and put in all of the different
  • 4:43 - 4:45
cork bark and wood and get the plants
  • 4:45 - 4:46
planted then after that we'll move in
  • 4:46 - 4:48
the spiders now what i did is i took
  • 4:48 - 4:51
those large cork bark rounds that i got
  • 4:51 - 4:53
a few days ago and i've cut them up into
  • 4:53 - 4:56
small little pieces dr rayer suggested
  • 4:56 - 4:59
coconut shells make great hides for them
  • 4:59 - 5:01
but i didn't have any i used the last
  • 5:01 - 5:03
ones i had in my dart frog enclosure but
  • 5:03 - 5:05
the concepts the same the nice little
  • 5:05 - 5:08
places for them to go in web up hide and
  • 5:08 - 5:09
kind of separate so we're gonna lay
  • 5:09 - 5:11
those out in the enclosure i got some
  • 5:11 - 5:13
large tall pieces that we're gonna put
  • 5:13 - 5:14
along the sides so there's gonna be
  • 5:14 - 5:16
plenty of places for them to anchor
  • 5:16 - 5:18
their webbing and hide and retreat and
  • 5:18 - 5:20
it's i think it's gonna look cool so to
  • 5:20 - 5:22
start off i'm putting all of the the
  • 5:22 - 5:25
long tall pieces in the large pieces
  • 5:25 - 5:26
first and this is a front opening
  • 5:26 - 5:27
enclosure so i don't want to get them
  • 5:27 - 5:28
too close to the door because i don't
  • 5:28 - 5:30
want to wet the door shut
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    [Music]
  • 5:32 - 5:34
now i might actually get a couple more
  • 5:34 - 5:35
tall pieces because that really doesn't
  • 5:35 - 5:37
provide as much cover as i thought but i
  • 5:37 - 5:39
got another couple pieces of wood too so
  • 5:39 - 5:41
for right now we're going to add some of
  • 5:41 - 5:43
these other like kind of hide type
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    pieces
  • 5:47 - 6:04
    [Music]
  • 6:04 - 6:06
and of course it wouldn't be a tarantula
  • 6:06 - 6:09
    collective enclosure without a skull
  • 6:09 - 6:14
    [Music]
  • 6:14 - 6:16
all right i think that looks pretty good
  • 6:16 - 6:18
they got plenty of places to hide plenty
  • 6:18 - 6:20
of web anchors i guess now it's time to
  • 6:20 - 6:21
get the plants in now as you can see
  • 6:21 - 6:23
this is just kind of a hodgepodge of
  • 6:23 - 6:25
plants got some uh different types of
  • 6:25 - 6:27
pothos that i pulled out of a few
  • 6:27 - 6:28
enclosures i'm not even sure what these
  • 6:28 - 6:30
plants are they're in my uh leopard
  • 6:30 - 6:32
geckos enclosure and we got some
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    wandering jew i'm sure there's a
  • 6:34 - 6:35
scientific name that's not nearly as
  • 6:35 - 6:37
offensive but i don't know what it is
  • 6:37 - 6:39
i'll put it down below these are nice
  • 6:39 - 6:40
because they're going to grow and wrap
  • 6:40 - 6:42
around stuff give them even more places
  • 6:42 - 6:44
to hide and more places to anchor their
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    webbing
  • 6:48 - 6:52
    [Music]
  • 6:59 - 7:06
    [Music]
  • 7:06 - 7:07
    [Applause]
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    [Music]
  • 7:13 - 7:33
    [Music]
  • 7:37 - 7:45
    [Music]
  • 7:45 - 7:46
now we got all the plants in i'm gonna
  • 7:46 - 7:47
do a little bit more decorating we'll
  • 7:47 - 7:49
add some like just different leaves and
  • 7:49 - 7:51
that actually has two purposes one it
  • 7:51 - 7:53
looks cool it gives it more of a natural
  • 7:53 - 7:55
appearance but it's also food and
  • 7:55 - 7:57
shelter for the isopods and the
  • 7:57 - 7:59
springtails that are in there but before
  • 7:59 - 8:01
i do that i've got this i've been
  • 8:01 - 8:03
putting this it's called stone deserts
  • 8:03 - 8:06
by exoterra it's mainly like scorpions
  • 8:06 - 8:09
and and desert reptiles but i sprinkle
  • 8:09 - 8:11
some of my enclosures on the top and it
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    really kind of looks cool
  • 8:16 - 8:19
sphagnum moss i just like to shred it up
  • 8:19 - 8:21
break it all over there and i use both
  • 8:21 - 8:23
the white and the green kind i also like
  • 8:23 - 8:25
to shove it in any cracks or crevices
  • 8:25 - 8:28
just gives a more natural kind of look
  • 8:28 - 8:30
and just mix it up a little bit with the
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    substrate
  • 8:33 - 8:37
    now put in some leaves
  • 8:38 - 8:42
    [Music]
  • 8:43 - 8:45
i feel like that's looking pretty good i
  • 8:45 - 8:46
think we're about ready to move in these
  • 8:46 - 8:49
    spiders
  • 8:49 - 8:58
    [Music]
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    so
  • 9:02 - 9:09
    [Music]
  • 9:22 - 9:24
so all the plants are watered everything
  • 9:24 - 9:26
is set up i put the lid on the enclosure
  • 9:26 - 9:28
the only things left to do is to move
  • 9:28 - 9:30
these spiders in now you may be nervous
  • 9:30 - 9:32
i'm a little nervous but dr rayer
  • 9:32 - 9:33
assures me that this is going to work
  • 9:33 - 9:36
well and these are all from communals
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    that are like multi-generational so
  • 9:37 - 9:39
their whole life they've known nothing
  • 9:39 - 9:41
but living communally so maybe the fact
  • 9:41 - 9:42
    that it's generation after generation
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    after generation of being kept
  • 9:44 - 9:47
communally maybe they'll be more adapted
  • 9:47 - 9:49
to surviving this type of enclosure and
  • 9:49 - 9:50
hopefully it goes really well so we're
  • 9:50 - 9:52
gonna count how many we have get them
  • 9:52 - 9:54
set up in here and i'll keep you updated
  • 9:54 - 9:56
as time goes by you know just kind of
  • 9:56 - 9:57
let you know how the communals go and
  • 9:57 - 9:59
how everybody's doing but if it works
  • 9:59 - 10:01
out anywhere near as well as dr rayer's
  • 10:01 - 10:03
enclosure probably gonna end up having
  • 10:03 - 10:05
tons of these in no time soon so let's
  • 10:05 - 10:07
check out these beautiful tarantulas get
  • 10:07 - 10:09
them moved into this nice new home up
  • 10:09 - 10:11
first this is uh just says five or six
  • 10:11 - 10:14
neo from another group plus one young
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    baby
  • 10:16 - 10:18
oh wow they've already started webbing
  • 10:18 - 10:20
up this little deli cup far i don't see
  • 10:20 - 10:22
anyone i mean i can't not right on top
  • 10:22 - 10:24
at least i can see them like in through
  • 10:24 - 10:27
    the sides and stuff
  • 10:28 - 10:30
so that's one down see another big one
  • 10:30 - 10:32
right up here see if we can get it to
  • 10:32 - 10:33
    come on in
  • 10:33 - 10:35
so we've got three in so far i just
  • 10:35 - 10:38
    found the fourth one
  • 10:45 - 10:47
all right i found the fifth one and the
  • 10:47 - 10:50
    little spiderling
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    oh wow that one's big
  • 10:52 - 10:54
    that is cool
  • 10:54 - 10:58
definitely get a picture of that
  • 11:05 - 11:08
so far we've got five two that are solid
  • 11:08 - 11:09
adults at least and one little
  • 11:09 - 11:13
spiderling now this one says eight and
  • 11:13 - 11:14
they all look to be pretty good size
  • 11:14 - 11:16
they're dwarf species so they're not
  • 11:16 - 11:18
very big this enclosure has given them
  • 11:18 - 11:19
more than enough room i think they're
  • 11:19 - 11:20
going to be really happy in here the
  • 11:20 - 11:23
    difficulty with rehousing communals is
  • 11:23 - 11:24
that there's so many of them you got to
  • 11:24 - 11:26
have the doors open to get them in so
  • 11:26 - 11:28
