How nationalism and globalism can coexist

  • Not Synced
So two weeks ago, I searched
    the word "nationalist" on Twitter.
  • Not Synced
    The results were quite colorful,
  • Not Synced
    with expressions like, "Emboldened
    Racist Moron," --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    "White Supremacist Idiot;"
  • Not Synced
    "Fascist Sock Puppets;" --
  • Not Synced
    Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    "Orwellian, Hitlerian, Terrifying."
  • Not Synced
I then searched the word, "globalist,"
  • Not Synced
and got things like, "Socialist Sell-Outs,"
  • Not Synced
    "Disgusting Corporate Propaganda,"
  • Not Synced
    "Elitist Financial Overlords;"
  • Not Synced
    "Ruthless Cosmopolitan Rats."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Even by social media standards,
  • Not Synced
the words are cruel and disgusting.
  • Not Synced
    But they reflect the instensity
  • Not Synced
of one of the most fundamental
    questions of our times.
  • Not Synced
    Nationalism or Globalism?
  • Not Synced
What is the best path forward?
  • Not Synced
    This question impacts
    everything we care about:
  • Not Synced
    our cultural identity,
  • Not Synced
    our prosperity,
  • Not Synced
    our political systems --
  • Not Synced
    everything --
  • Not Synced
the health of our planet --
  • Not Synced
    everything.
  • Not Synced
So on the one hand, we have nationalism.
  • Not Synced
    Collins defines it as
    a "devotion to one's nation,"
  • Not Synced
but also, a "doctrine that puts
    national interests above
  • Not Synced
    international considerations."
  • Not Synced
    For nationalists, our modern societies
    are built on national grounds:
  • Not Synced
we share a land, a history, a culture
    and we defend each other.
  • Not Synced
In a big and chaotic world,
  • Not Synced
they see nationalism as the only
    sensible way
  • Not Synced
    to maintain social stability.
  • Not Synced
    But alarmed globalists warn us:
  • Not Synced
    self-centered nationalism
    can easily turn ugly.
  • Not Synced
We've seen it with 20th-century facisms:
  • Not Synced
    bloody wars, millions of deaths,
    immeasurable destructions.
  • Not Synced
On the other hand, we have globalism.
  • Not Synced
The Oxford Living Dictionary defines it
    as "the operation or planning
  • Not Synced
    of economic and foreign policy
    on a global basis."
  • Not Synced
    For nationalists, globalism
    is rapidly deconstructing
  • Not Synced
what our ancestors took decades to build.
  • Not Synced
    It's like spitting on our soldiers' tombs;
  • Not Synced
    it's eroding our national solidarities
  • Not Synced
    and opening the doors
    to foreign invasions.
  • Not Synced
    But gloabalists make the case
    that reinforcing our global governance
  • Not Synced
is the only way to tackle
    big, supernational problems
  • Not Synced
    like nuclear proliferation,
  • Not Synced
    the global refugee crisis,
  • Not Synced
    climate change or terrorism
  • Not Synced
or even the consequences of superhuman AI.
  • Not Synced
So we are at the crossroads
  • Not Synced
and we are asked to choose:
  • Not Synced
    nationalism or globalism?
  • Not Synced
    Having lived in four continents,
  • Not Synced
    I've always been
    interested in this question.
  • Not Synced
But it took a whole new level
    when I saw this happening:
  • Not Synced
the biggest surge in nationalist votes
    in Western democracies since WWII.
  • Not Synced
All of a sudden, this isn't
    theory anymore.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, these political movements
have built their success with ideas
  • Not Synced
that could mean, down the road,
    losing my French citizenship
  • Not Synced
    because I'm North African,
  • Not Synced
or not being able to come
    back home to the US
  • Not Synced
    because I come from
    a Muslim-majority country.
  • Not Synced
You know, when you live in a democracy,
    you like with this idea
  • Not Synced
    hat your government
    will always protect you
  • Not Synced
as long as you abide by the laws.
  • Not Synced
With the rise of national populism,
  • Not Synced
despite being the best citizen I can be,
  • Not Synced
I now have to live with the idea
that my government can hurt me
  • Not Synced
    for reasons I cannot contol.
  • Not Synced
    It's very unsettling,
  • Not Synced
but it forced my to re-think this question
    and try to think deeper,
  • Not Synced
and the more I thought about it,
  • Not Synced
    the more I started
    questioning the question.
  • Not Synced
Why would we have to choose between
    nationalism and globalism --
  • Not Synced
    between loving our country
    and caring for the world?
  • Not Synced
    There's no reason for that.
  • Not Synced
We don't have to choose between
    family and country,
  • Not Synced
or region and religion and country.
  • Not Synced
    You already have multiple identities
and we live with them very well.
  • Not Synced
Why would we have to choose
    between country and world?
  • Not Synced
    What if, instead of accepting
    this absurd choice,
  • Not Synced
we took it on ourselves to fight
    this dangerous binary thinking?
  • Not Synced
So for all the globalists in the audience,
  • Not Synced
    I want to ask.
  • Not Synced
When I say the word "nationalist,"
what image comes to your mind?
  • Not Synced
    Something like this?
  • Not Synced
Believe me, I think of that, too.
  • Not Synced
But I'd like you to remember
    that for most people,
  • Not Synced
    nationalism feels more like this.
  • Not Synced
    Or maybe like that.
  • Not Synced
You know, it's that thing inside you
    when you accidentally watch
  • Not Synced
and obscure Olympic sport on TV --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    wait --
  • Not Synced
and the mere sight of an unknown athlete
    wearing your national colors
  • Not Synced
    gets you all excited.
  • Not Synced
    You heartbeat goes up,
  • Not Synced
    your stress level goes up
  • Not Synced
and your standing in front of the TV
  • Not Synced
    and screaming with passion
    for that athlete to win.
  • Not Synced
    That's nationalism.
  • Not Synced
It's people happy to be together,
  • Not Synced
happy to belong to a large
    national community.
  • Not Synced
    Why would it be wrong?
  • Not Synced
You know, gloablists, you may think
    of nationalism
  • Not Synced
    as an old, 19th-century idea
    that is destined to fail,
  • Not Synced
but I'm sorry to tell you
that the facts are not on your side.
  • Not Synced
When the world value survey asked
    more than 89,000 people
  • Not Synced
    across 60 countries,
  • Not Synced
how proud they felt about their country,
  • Not Synced
    88.5 percent said,
    "very proud" or "quite proud."
  • Not Synced
    88.5 percent.
  • Not Synced
    Nationalism is not going away
    any time soon.
  • Not Synced
It's a powerful feeling that according
    to another study
  • Not Synced
    is a strong predictor
    of individual happiness.
  • Not Synced
It's crazy, but your happiness is more
    correlated with national satisfaction
  • Not Synced
than we think you would expect,
  • Not Synced
    like household income
    or your job satisfaction
  • Not Synced
    or your health satisfaction.
  • Not Synced
So if nationalism makes people happy,
  • Not Synced
why would anybody take it away from them?
  • Not Synced
    Fellow globalists,
  • Not Synced
    if you are like me,
  • Not Synced
you may be attached to globalization
    for humanistic reasons.
  • Not Synced
And you may take great joy
in some of its accomplishments since 1945.
  • Not Synced
After all, major regions of the world
    have been exceptionally peaceful.
  • Not Synced
    Extreme poverty rates around
    the globe are trending down,
  • Not Synced
and more than two billion people,
  • Not Synced
    most notably in Asia,
  • Not Synced
    show spectacular improvements
    in their standards of living.
  • Not Synced
    But studies also show
that globalization has a dark side
  • Not Synced
and left on the side of the road,
  • Not Synced
    hundreds of millions of people
    on Western middle classes
  • Not Synced
    with anemic income growth
for more than two decades --
  • Not Synced
    possible three decades,
  • Not Synced
    according to some studies.
  • Not Synced
    We cannot ignore
    this elephant in our room.
  • Not Synced
    If anything, our collective energy
    would be better used
  • Not Synced
finding ways to fix this aspect
    of globalization
  • Not Synced
    instead of, you know, fighting
    this polarizing battle
  • Not Synced
    against nationalism.
  • Not Synced
So now, the nationalists in the audiece,
  • Not Synced
    I have some crusty, non-binary
    nuggets for you.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
When I say the word "globalist,"
    what comes to your mind?
  • Not Synced
    Out-of-touch, one percent plutocrat?
  • Not Synced
    Or maybe the heartless,
    greedy Wall Street-type, right?
  • Not Synced
    Or maybe people like me
  • Not Synced
with multiple origins living in a big,
    cosmopolitan metropolis.
  • Not Synced
    Well, you remember that world
value survey that I mentioned earlier?
  • Not Synced
    It showed another fascinating finding.
  • Not Synced
71 percent of the world population
    agreed with the statement,
  • Not Synced
"I am a citizen of the world."
  • Not Synced
Do you know what it means?
  • Not Synced
Most of us are simultaneously proud
of our country and citizens of the world.
  • Not Synced
And it gets even better --
  • Not Synced
the citizens of the world in the survey
show a higher level of national pride
  • Not Synced
than the ones that rejected that label.
  • Not Synced
    So once and for all,
  • Not Synced
    being a globalist doesn't mean
    betraying your country.
  • Not Synced
It just means that you have
    enough social empathy
  • Not Synced
and you project some of it outside
    your national borders.
  • Not Synced
Now, I know that when I dig into
    my own nationalist feelings,
  • Not Synced
    one of my anxieties versus
    the globalized world
  • Not Synced
    is national identity.
  • Not Synced
How are we going to preserve
    what makes us special --
  • Not Synced
    what makes us different --
  • Not Synced
    what brings us together?
  • Not Synced
And as I started thinking about it
    I realized something really strange,
  • Not Synced
which is that a lot of the key ingredients
    of our national identities
  • Not Synced
    actually come from outside
    our national borders.
  • Not Synced
    Like, think of the letters
    that we use every day.
  • Not Synced
I don't know if you realize,
  • Not Synced
    but the latin script,
  • Not Synced
the latin alphabet that we use has
its origins from thousands of years ago
  • Not Synced
    near the Nile River.
  • Not Synced
It all started with a cow just like this
that was captured by a scribe
  • Not Synced
    into an elegant hieroglyph.
  • Not Synced
    That hieroglyph was transcribed
by a Semite in the Sinai
  • Not Synced
    into the letter [Aleph].
  • Not Synced
    Aleph travelled with Phoenicians
and reached the European shores in Greece
  • Not Synced
    where it became Alpha,
  • Not Synced
the mother of our letter A.
  • Not Synced
So that's how an Egyptian cow
    became our letter A.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And same thing with the Egyptian
    house that became [Bate],
  • Not Synced
    Beta
  • Not Synced
    and B.
  • Not Synced
And the Egyptian fish that became [Dalet],
  • Not Synced
    Delta
  • Not Synced
    and D.
  • Not Synced
Our most fundamental texts are full
of Egyptian cows, houses and fish.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And there are so many other examples,
  • Not Synced
    like take the United Kingdom
    and its monarchy.
  • Not Synced
    Queen Elizabeth II --
  • Not Synced
    German ancestry.
  • Not Synced
THe mottos on the royal coat of arms:
  • Not Synced
    all written in French --
  • Not Synced
not a single word of English.
  • Not Synced
Take France and it's iconic Eiffel Tower.
  • Not Synced
    The inspiration?
  • Not Synced
The United States of America --
  • Not Synced
and I don't mean Las Vegas,
  • Not Synced
    I mean 19th-century New York.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
This was the tallest building in New York
    in the mid-19th centry.
  • Not Synced
Does it remind you of something?
  • Not Synced
And you may think of China
    as a self-contained civilization,
  • Not Synced
    protected behind its Great Wall.
  • Not Synced
    But this twice.
  • Not Synced
    The Chinese official ideaology:
  • Not Synced
    Marxism, made in Germany.
  • Not Synced
    One of China's biggest religions:
  • Not Synced
    Buddhism,
  • Not Synced
    imported from India.
  • Not Synced
    India's favorite pastime?
  • Not Synced
    Cricket.
  • Not Synced
    I really love this quote
    from [Ashish Nandi,]
  • Not Synced
who said, "Cricket is an Indian game
    accidentally discovered by the British."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
So, you know, these are good reminders
that a lot of what we love
  • Not Synced
    in our national traditions
  • Not Synced
    actually come from previous
    waves of globalization.
  • Not Synced
    And beyond individual symbols,
  • Not Synced
    there are whole national traditions
    that could not have existed
  • Not Synced
    without globalization.
  • Not Synced
And the example that comes to my mind
    is a world-beloved national tradition:
  • Not Synced
    Italian cuisine.
  • Not Synced
My friends, if you ever have a chance
  • Not Synced
to go to a super authentic
    Italian restaurant
  • Not Synced
that only serves ancient Roman recipes,
  • Not Synced
my advice for you is don't go.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    You'd get very, very disappointed.
  • Not Synced
    No spaghetti, no pasta --
  • Not Synced
that really started in Sicily in the eigth
century when it was under Arabian rule.
  • Not Synced
No perfect espresso, no creamy cappuccino,
  • Not Synced
that came from Abyssinia via Yemen
    in the 17th century.
  • Not Synced
    And of course no perfect
    pizza napolitana:
  • Not Synced
how would you make it without
the tomatoes of the new world?
  • Not Synced
No, instead you would be served
    probably a lot of porridge,
  • Not Synced
    some vegetable --
  • Not Synced
    mostly cabbage --
  • Not Synced
    some chesese,
  • Not Synced
    and maybe if you're lucky,
  • Not Synced
the aboslute delicacy of that time:
  • Not Synced
    mmm, perfectly cooked,
    fattened door mice.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Thankfully, it was not a close tradition
    preseved by fanatic watch dogs.
  • Not Synced
No, it was an open process,
  • Not Synced
    nourished by explorers, traders,
    street-sellers and innovative home cooks.
  • Not Synced
And in many ways, globalism is a chance
    for our national tradions
  • Not Synced
    to be questioned, regenerated,
    reinterpreted,
  • Not Synced
attract to converts to stay vibrant
    and relevant over time.
  • Not Synced
    So just remember this.
  • Not Synced
Most of us nationalists in the world
    are globalists,
  • Not Synced
    and most of us globalists
    in the world are nationalist.
  • Not Synced
A lot of what we like in our
    national traditions
  • Not Synced
come from outside our national borders,
  • Not Synced
    and the reason we've entered
    outside our national borders
  • Not Synced
    is to discover these other
    national traditions.
  • Not Synced
So the real question should not be
  • Not Synced
    to choose between nationalism
    and gloabalism.
  • Not Synced
    The real questions is,
  • Not Synced
how can we do both better?
  • Not Synced
    It's a complex question
    for a complex world
  • Not Synced
    that calls for creative,
    non-binary solutions.
  • Not Synced
    What are you waiting for?
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause and cheers)

  • The talk needs to be fixed. There is a problem after the line
"Everything --the health of our planet--everything".

  • I agree with Thanasis, there is something wrong with the timeline after about 3 minutes, There are fixed subtitles after that. It behaves as it's a transcript instead of a translation.
