[Music Playing]
-
Not Synced
Oh, I like painting, I like doing clay.
-
Not Synced
All artwork.
-
Not Synced
This is one of my square drawings
-
Not Synced
that I've done.
-
Not Synced
This drawing I have done right here
-
Not Synced
makes me feel good
-
Not Synced
and I show my inspiration.
-
Not Synced
My name is Jackie
-
Not Synced
and I am going to take you on a tour.
-
Not Synced
That is a ceramics class.
-
Not Synced
This is the work class, right here
-
Not Synced
and there's sewing right here.
-
Not Synced
What're you sewing, Theresa?
-
Not Synced
My magic robe.
-
Not Synced
Oh, okay. Her magic robe. Okay.
-
Not Synced
That's a teacher right here.
-
Not Synced
How're you doing?
-
Not Synced
It is a great equalizer.
-
Not Synced
That transcends language.
-
Not Synced
That transcends culture.
-
Not Synced
That transcends disability.
-
Not Synced
Creative growth is about
-
Not Synced
artistic expression as a form of
self empowerment
-
Not Synced
as a form of aesthetic development,
as a form of saying
-
Not Synced
"this is who I am in the world".
-
Not Synced
Blue is cold and yellow is warm.
-
Not Synced
How do you know when you're reaching in
there what you're getting?
-
Not Synced
I can tell by the feel.
-
Not Synced
Feel?
-
Not Synced
Yep, the compartments, you know?
-
Not Synced
So what is the feel of green?
-
Not Synced
Green is like freezing,
red is hot.
-
Not Synced
So you're working with freezing and hot
right now?
-
Not Synced
Yes.
-
Not Synced
Monica's been fascinated with color
ever since she was
-
Not Synced
a wee child, and I think losing her sight
opened up a different connection
-
Not Synced
to the world of light, and shadow,
and color.
-
Not Synced
Do you have a favorite foam shape
to work on?
-
Not Synced
I like the logs,
-
Not Synced
the cubes,
-
Not Synced
the little tiny cubes,
-
Not Synced
and the spheres.
-
Not Synced
Logs, tiny cubes, and spheres.
-
Not Synced
Yeah, and the cakes too.
-
Not Synced
Yeah, and the cakes turned out great.
-
Not Synced
Yep.
-
Not Synced
I see her becoming more and more dedicated
to her art
-
Not Synced
and it seems to fulfill her in deeper and
deeper ways,
-
Not Synced
and for that, I feel so happy.
-
Not Synced
You know? Because she has so much to offer
the world.
-
Not Synced
Yes, um, my name is Rosena Finister
-
Not Synced
[Crowd whooping and clapping]
-
Not Synced
and I'm from a small town where all the
poor people live at.
-
Not Synced
That's where I'm from.
-
Not Synced
This is the type of art that I
started doing.
-
Not Synced
Creative Growth currently serves
162 artists at our studio every week.
-
Not Synced
When people come to the Creative Growth
studio, for the most part
-
Not Synced
they've never made art before
in their lives,
-
Not Synced
and we kind of welcome that.
-
Not Synced
Because it allows us to see who they are.
-
Not Synced
And, you know, there's no
right or wrong;
-
Not Synced
we don't teach in a traditional way.
-
Not Synced
We say, you know, "what would you like
to do?",
-
Not Synced
"what are you thinking about", "what do
you dream about",
-
Not Synced
"what color do you like"?
-
Not Synced
Tell us your story.
-
Not Synced
[Jazzy music playing]
-
Not Synced
I've been coming here since 1992
-
Not Synced
I like paint, I like to draw, and
I like paintings of people --
-
Not Synced
like, different people.
-
Not Synced
And stars -- movie stars.
-
Not Synced
There are wholesome people.
-
Not Synced
Wholesome encounters.
-
Not Synced
What do you like to look at?
-
Not Synced
I like that one.
-
Not Synced
This one?
-
Not Synced
Yeah.
-
Not Synced
Look at that one?
This is what?
-
Not Synced
What do you call the name
of this painting?
-
Not Synced
"Inner Limits".
-
Not Synced
William is just such a brilliant artist.
-
Not Synced
And look at this.
-
Not Synced
Beautiful piece.
-
Not Synced
Do you remember making this?
-
Not Synced
I remember.
-
Not Synced
That's what? Praise Frisco?
-
Not Synced
Yeah.
-
Not Synced
He envisions through his work
a utopian reality that he creates
-
Not Synced
for us all to live in.
-
Not Synced
A world where people who have died
come back to life,
-
Not Synced
places where bad neighborhoods are safe,
-
Not Synced
where his family is happy,
where the world is peaceful.
-
Not Synced
And, he believes the painting will be
powerful enough
-
Not Synced
to make that a reality.
-
Not Synced
Riding on the spaceship,
there's not gonna be no more evils.
-
Not Synced
No more aliens, no more monsters,
-
Not Synced
no more evils.
-
Not Synced
Uh-huh.
-
Not Synced
Creative Growth is really a
Bay Area story.
-
Not Synced
The disability rights movement in the
early 1970s,
-
Not Synced
Creative Growth really comes from that.
-
Not Synced
So, during that time, people with
disabilities in institutions
-
Not Synced
were suddenly deinstitutionalized.
-
Not Synced
So, artists came together in Oakland,
and put paint on a table,
-
Not Synced
and said "well, these people are gonna
come here; creativity is the path forward"
-
Not Synced
I'm just doing a tree right now.
-
Not Synced
And, people with disabilities can
communicate and be a vital part
-
Not Synced
of society.
-
Not Synced
Part of the Creative Growth plan to come
here and make art,
-
Not Synced
is that represents you, and you show your
work in the gallery.
-
Not Synced
If the work sells, the artist gets half
the money.
-
Not Synced
Creative Growth, the nonprofit gets half
the money.
-
Not Synced
We buy supplies and support the
artists with that money.
-
Not Synced
If you came to Creative Growth, you may
buy something for 10 dollars,
-
Not Synced
and you can buy something for
75,000 dollars.
-
Not Synced
It's exactly like the contemporary art
world.
-
Not Synced
As an artist's work develops, and it gets
into collections, and museums,
-
Not Synced
and highly sought after, the prices go up.
-
Not Synced
And Creative Growth artists follow that
same path.
-
Not Synced
Judith Scott is one of the most well-
known Creative Growth artists.
-
Not Synced
As an artist, Judith Scott transcended
this difficult situation.
-
Not Synced
Where she was separated from her
family and institutionalized
-
Not Synced
for almost 40 years.
-
Not Synced
She was Deaf and it wasn't known, so she
never developed language,
-
Not Synced
and she was isolated.
-
Not Synced
So in her 40's, she comes to
Creative Growth.
-
Not Synced
And, her method to talk to us
-
Not Synced
was art.
-
Not Synced
The process is very important to her
-
Not Synced
and the result of that process
