Praise Frisco? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Yeah. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He envisions through his work a utopian reality that he creates 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for us all to live in. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A world where people who have died come back to life, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 places where bad neighborhoods are safe, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where his family is happy, where the world is peaceful. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And, he believes the painting will be powerful enough 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to make that a reality. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Riding on the spaceship, there's not gonna be no more evils. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No more aliens, no more monsters, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 no more evils. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Uh-huh. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Creative Growth is really a Bay Area story. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The disability rights movement in the early 1970s, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Creative Growth really comes from that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, during that time, people with disabilities in institutions 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were suddenly deinstitutionalized. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, artists came together in Oakland, and put paint on a table, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and said "well, these people are gonna come here; creativity is the path forward" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm just doing a tree right now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And, people with disabilities can communicate and be a vital part 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of society. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Part of the Creative Growth plan to come here and make art, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that represents you, and you show your work in the gallery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If the work sells, the artist gets half the money. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Creative Growth, the nonprofit gets half the money. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We buy supplies and support the artists with that money. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you came to Creative Growth, you may buy something for 10 dollars, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you can buy something for 75,000 dollars. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's exactly like the contemporary art world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As an artist's work develops, and it gets into collections, and museums, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and highly sought after, the prices go up. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And Creative Growth artists follow that same path. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Judith Scott is one of the most well- known Creative Growth artists. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As an artist, Judith Scott transcended this difficult situation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Where she was separated from her family and institutionalized 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for almost 40 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She was Deaf and it wasn't known, so she never developed language, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and she was isolated. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So in her 40's, she comes to Creative Growth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And, her method to talk to us 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was art. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The process is very important to her 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the result of that process
