Is there interbeing between Catholicism and Buddhism?

  • 0:09 - 0:24
    (Bell)
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    Dear Thay, dear Sangha,
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    We have a friend.
    He is a Catholic monk.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
    When he was a child,
he didn't have any spiritual life.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
    But when he grew up,
he had an experience of love and unity.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    And he became a monk.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Now he has two spiritual sources.
  • 0:51 - 0:56
    The first one is Jesus
and the other one is Thay.
  • 0:57 - 1:03
He has read some of your books and
he follows your teachings on the Internet
  • 1:03 - 1:05
and he is very grateful for them.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
Probably, he won't be able to come
    to Plum Village.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    Will you say some words
    about this interbeing
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    between Catholicism and Buddhism?
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    (Thay): Read again please.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    Dear Thay,
    dear Sangha,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    We have a friend,
    who is a Catholic monk.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    When he was a child
he didn't have any spiritual life.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    But when he grew up,
he had an experience of love and unity.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    And he became a monk.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
Now he has two spiritual sources.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    The first one is Jesus
and the other one is Thay.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
He has read some of your books and
he follows your teachings on the Internet
  • 1:58 - 2:00
and he is very grateful for them.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
Probably he won't be able to come
    to Plum Village.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
So could Thay say some words
    about the interbeing
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    between Catholicism and Buddhism?
  • 2:18 - 2:23
    The day before yesterday,
    we said something like:
  • 2:23 - 2:29
    "Buddhism is made of
    non-Buddhist elements."
  • 2:32 - 2:37
It's like a flower that is made of
    non-flower elements.
  • 2:40 - 2:46
And the Buddha has used only non-Buddhist
    elements to make his Buddhism.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
And he was aware of that.
  • 2:50 - 2:55
Looking around you see many elements.
  • 2:55 - 3:00
And if you are a skillful person,
you can make use of every element you see
  • 3:00 - 3:03
in order to make your own Buddhism.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
So the same thing must be true
    with Christianity.
  • 3:14 - 3:19
    Christianity is made of
    non-Christianity elements.
  • 3:20 - 3:25
And the teaching of interbeing is also
    available in Christianity.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    The teaching of living happily
    in the present moment
  • 3:32 - 3:35
can be found in the teaching
    of Jesus Christ.
  • 3:38 - 3:42
And when you read the Bible
  • 3:46 - 3:50
you read statements like this one:
  • 3:52 - 4:00
"There will be a day when you will see
that I am in My Father
  • 4:01 - 4:06
    and you are in Me
    and I am in you."
  • 4:06 - 4:11
    That is from John.
This is the teaching of interbeing.
  • 4:17 - 4:23
I am in the Father and you are in me
    and I am in you.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    We are inside each other
    and not outside.
  • 4:29 - 4:37
In the Gospel according to Matthew
    is said that:
  • 4:37 - 4:45
"Let us not worry about tomorrow.
Tomorrow will take care of itself."
  • 4:45 - 4:49
So that is the teaching of
living happily in the present moment.
  • 4:50 - 4:56
    So there are many points
    that can be recognized.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
And there are many of us who practice
  • 5:02 - 5:10
according to the teaching of Jesus and
the Buddha and do not find any conflict.
  • 5:11 - 5:19
And that is very good for the cause of
peace, unity and harmony in the world.
  • 5:22 - 5:23

  • 5:27 - 5:34
