    that Jesus made this testimony
  • 13:15 - 13:17
about the revelation that Abraham had,
  • 13:17 - 13:19
and it seemed like that one of the moments
  • 13:19 - 13:21
    where Jesus (and God) was
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    unveiling Himself to Abraham
  • 13:23 - 13:25
was, for instance, in this episode
  • 13:25 - 13:27
that you are now reading, right?
  • 13:27 - 13:29
So we do have some passages here
  • 13:29 - 13:31
that we are going to look at today
  • 13:31 - 13:33
in the Old Testament, in Genesis,
  • 13:33 - 13:35
the very first book of the Bible,
  • 13:35 - 13:39
that will give us evidence of the ways
  • 13:39 - 13:41
in which Jesus was already revealing
  • 13:41 - 13:42
    Himself to Abraham,
  • 13:42 - 13:44
    and not only to Abraham
  • 13:44 - 13:47
but all the nations around him
  • 13:47 - 13:50
who were to be blessed by this testimony.
  • 13:50 - 13:52
Okay, so maybe, Puia, since you
  • 13:52 - 13:55
    already initiated us with some
  • 13:55 - 13:57
of those stories, if you'll take us
  • 13:57 - 14:00
    to Genesis 12:3.
  • 14:00 - 14:01
(Puia) Sure, and I'll be reading
  • 14:01 - 14:03
from the New King James Version,
  • 14:03 - 14:05
    Genesis, chapter 12, verse 3:
  • 14:17 - 14:19
(Sabina) So we see here especially
  • 14:19 - 14:20
    that what was happening was
  • 14:20 - 14:23
    the call of Abraham.
  • 14:23 - 14:26
And already in this call of Abraham,
  • 14:26 - 14:28
there was a promise, and it was a promise
  • 14:28 - 14:31
    that was pointing to Jesus.
  • 14:31 - 14:34
Maybe, Joshua, can you take us
  • 14:34 - 14:39
    to Genesis 18, verses 17 and 18.
  • 14:39 - 14:40
(Joshua) Of course. I'll be reading
  • 14:40 - 14:42
from the New King James Version:
  • 14:57 - 15:01
(Sabina) Okay, so, is that revelation
  • 15:01 - 15:03
also happening here in this event?
  • 15:03 - 15:04
    Which event is that?
  • 15:04 - 15:05
    Do you have any thoughts?
  • 15:05 - 15:07
Can you see the revelation of Jesus
  • 15:07 - 15:10
    occurring here also? Yes, Travis.
  • 15:10 - 15:11
    (Travis) It is occurring
  • 15:11 - 15:15
through his son Isaac, because Jesus
  • 15:15 - 15:16
    would end up coming
  • 15:16 - 15:19
    through the lineage of Abraham.
  • 15:19 - 15:20
    (Sabina) In fact, that is
  • 15:20 - 15:21
    a very important event
  • 15:21 - 15:25
of the revelation of God to Abraham
  • 15:25 - 15:26
    and to us as well.
  • 15:26 - 15:27
    I think that's also mentioned
  • 15:27 - 15:28
    in the New Testament.
  • 15:28 - 15:30
We are eventually going to get there,
  • 15:30 - 15:32
but there is one more passage
  • 15:32 - 15:34
in the Old Testament that we can look at
  • 15:34 - 15:38
    in chapter 22, verses 13 to 18,
  • 15:38 - 15:42
and maybe let's have Cory take us there.
  • 15:42 - 15:45
    And that's just another passage
  • 15:45 - 15:48
where we can see the revelation of Jesus
  • 15:48 - 15:50
    already in the time
  • 15:50 - 15:53
    of the Old Testament. Cory.
  • 15:53 - 15:58
    (Cory) Yes, Genesis 22:13-18,
  • 15:58 - 15:59
    in the New King James:
  • 17:09 - 17:10
    (Derek, Team) Amen.
  • 17:10 - 17:13
(Sabina) So we see here not once,
  • 17:13 - 17:15
not twice, but at least three times
  • 17:15 - 17:17
    in which this promise
  • 17:17 - 17:19
    of the coming special blessing
  • 17:19 - 17:21
through the seed of Abraham was going
  • 17:21 - 17:25
to be revealed in Jesus. Yes, Travis.
  • 17:25 - 17:26
(Travis) I just want to make a point.
  • 17:26 - 17:30
In verse 8, Abraham says, "My son,
  • 17:30 - 17:31
    the Lord will provide
  • 17:31 - 17:33
    a burnt offering Himself."
  • 17:33 - 17:35
    Many scholars believe
  • 17:35 - 17:36
that there should be a comma,
  • 17:36 - 17:39
    "The Lord will provide Himself,
  • 17:39 - 17:41
a burnt offering," and I agree with that.
  • 17:41 - 17:43
I think it was revealed to him that God
  • 17:43 - 17:45
    would provide Himself,
  • 17:45 - 17:47
the Lamb to be slain, as we've been
  • 17:47 - 17:49
talking about with John the Baptist.
  • 17:49 - 17:50
    (Sabina) Those are
  • 17:50 - 17:51
    very interesting thoughts.
  • 17:51 - 17:53
    Indeed, we know for sure
  • 17:53 - 17:55
that it was His provision of Himself
  • 17:55 - 17:57
    that granted us to have
  • 17:57 - 17:58
    this blessing in Christ.
  • 17:58 - 18:00
So we are going to be looking now
  • 18:00 - 18:02
at a couple of verses in the New Testament
  • 18:02 - 18:04
    that confirm this truth.
  • 18:04 - 18:07
Can we please turn to the book of Matthew,
  • 18:07 - 18:09
and I'm going to ask Viara,
  • 18:09 - 18:11
    Viara, if you'll lead us
  • 18:11 - 18:14
to the first chapter of Matthew,
  • 18:14 - 18:16
and it's going to be verse 1.
  • 18:16 - 18:18
And we are going to be looking here
  • 18:18 - 18:21
at a New Testament writing that confirms
  • 18:21 - 18:22
    the revelation that was given
  • 18:22 - 18:25
    to Abraham about Jesus.
  • 18:25 - 18:26
    (Viara) I'm reading
  • 18:26 - 18:28
    from the New Living Translation:
  • 18:36 - 18:38
    (Sabina) Okay, and do we
  • 18:38 - 18:39
    have any thoughts here
  • 18:39 - 18:42
about this particular verse? Yes, Puia.
  • 18:42 - 18:44
(Puia) For us, I believe we take it
  • 18:44 - 18:46
    for granted that Matthew started
  • 18:46 - 18:48
his account of the story of Jesus
  • 18:48 - 18:51
with the genealogy because we just read it
  • 18:51 - 18:53
like, "Oh, it's just another story."
  • 18:53 - 18:56
But the Jews at that point in time
  • 18:56 - 18:58
had been expecting the Messiah to come
  • 18:58 - 19:01
from the lineage of Abraham and David.
  • 19:01 - 19:04
    And so Matthew intentionally starting
  • 19:04 - 19:06
the story of Jesus by pointing them
  • 19:06 - 19:09
back to Abraham should remind them
  • 19:09 - 19:13
of that promise that this Jesus, indeed,
  • 19:13 - 19:16
is that promised blessing from Abraham.
  • 19:16 - 19:17
    (Sabina) That's awesome.
  • 19:17 - 19:19
I think it's so beautiful, the ways
  • 19:19 - 19:21
in which the Holy Spirit has impressed
  • 19:21 - 19:23
the different writers to give the witness
  • 19:23 - 19:25
that was important in their context.
  • 19:25 - 19:27
Because we see that for Matthew
  • 19:27 - 19:30
it was so important to refer to Abraham,
  • 19:30 - 19:32
while for John, he decided to even go
  • 19:32 - 19:34
    back to Genesis, right?
  • 19:34 - 19:40
So let's look also at Acts 3:25,26,
  • 19:40 - 19:41
and maybe, Jason, if you could
  • 19:41 - 19:43
    read that text for us.
  • 19:43 - 19:45
(Jason) Alright, and I'll be reading
  • 19:45 - 19:46
from the New King James Version,
  • 19:46 - 19:51
    Acts, chapter 3, verses 25 and 26:
  • 20:01 - 20:03
    Verse 26:
  • 20:14 - 20:15
    (Sabina) Yes, that's awesome.
  • 20:15 - 20:19
So we can see that God has preached
  • 20:19 - 20:23
the gospel through type and promise.
  • 20:23 - 20:26
You know, these prophecies that we see,
  • 20:26 - 20:28
even in the time of Abraham
  • 20:28 - 20:30
    were already giving evidence
  • 20:30 - 20:32
    of God's love and presence
  • 20:32 - 20:33
to them back in that day.
  • 20:33 - 20:36
So it's important that we keep in mind
  • 20:36 - 20:38
that the witness that is given to Jesus
  • 20:38 - 20:40
is not just about the stories that we read
  • 20:40 - 20:41
    in the New Testament,
  • 20:41 - 20:43
    but also all throughout eternity.
  • 20:43 - 20:46
From eternity to eternity, there are
  • 20:46 - 20:48
a lot of witnesses that we are going
  • 20:48 - 20:50
to hear about Jesus. Yes, Travis.
  • 20:50 - 20:52
(Travis) If I may, I would like to read
  • 20:52 - 20:53
    from the book of Hebrews,
  • 20:53 - 20:55
because it wasn't just the writings
  • 20:55 - 20:56
    about Abraham that confirmed;
  • 20:56 - 20:59
it was his life that confirmed it.
  • 20:59 - 21:04
    Hebrews, chapter 11, verses 9 and 10,
  • 21:04 - 21:06
    if I could read that.
  • 21:06 - 21:08
    Hebrews, chapter 11:9,10, says:
  • 21:25 - 21:27
    He did not just believe
  • 21:27 - 21:28
    that the Messiah would come,
  • 21:28 - 21:29
    he believed His mission
  • 21:29 - 21:30
    would be successful.
  • 21:30 - 21:32
    (Sabina) That's wonderful,
  • 21:32 - 21:33
    thank you so much, Travis.
  • 21:33 - 21:34
And it's awesome to also see,
  • 21:34 - 21:36
    just like as we witnessed
  • 21:36 - 21:38
in our previous studies, how God
  • 21:38 - 21:41
has this way of revealing Himself.
  • 21:41 - 21:43
    You know, little by little,
  • 21:43 - 21:44
    He puts the seed.
  • 21:44 - 21:46
He explores an experience of a person.
  • 21:46 - 21:50
Altogether, He brings us to see HIs work
  • 21:50 - 21:52
    all throughout history. Yes, Viara.
  • 21:52 - 21:54
(Viara) And I guess His plan was
  • 21:54 - 21:57
not to just be a God of the generation
  • 21:57 - 21:59
of Abraham by blood, but all
  • 21:59 - 22:02
    that spiritually would accept Jesus.
  • 22:02 - 22:04
And how awesome it will be if one day
  • 22:04 - 22:06
it says, "And He was the God of Jacob,
  • 22:06 - 22:09
the God of Abraham, the God of Viara."
  • 22:09 - 22:11
That's what I want to hear one day.
  • 22:11 - 22:13
(Sabina) Yes. Isn't it in Galatians,
  • 22:13 - 22:15
    I think it's Galatians 3:8,
  • 22:15 - 22:17
if I'm not mistaken, but if it's not,
  • 22:17 - 22:22
we will find it, that actually the Bible
  • 22:22 - 22:25
says that even Abraham was justified
  • 22:25 - 22:27
    by faith in Christ, right?
  • 22:27 - 22:28
So there is no such person
  • 22:28 - 22:31
that has existed or that will exist
  • 22:31 - 22:34
that would not require the sacrifice
  • 22:34 - 22:37
of Jesus as the source of their salvation.
  • 22:37 - 22:39
Okay, so, I sometimes hear people
  • 22:39 - 22:41
    [ask] this question, "What happened
  • 22:41 - 22:43
to those that came before Jesus?
  • 22:43 - 22:47
Would they be able to benefit
  • 22:47 - 22:48
    [from] the blessing
  • 22:48 - 22:50
    of the sacrifice of Jesus?"
  • 22:50 - 22:51
    And what is the answer?
  • 22:51 - 22:52
    (Derek) Absolutely.
  • 22:52 - 22:53
    (Sabina) Of course.
  • 22:53 - 22:54
There would be no other way.
  • 22:54 - 22:57
There was no plan A and now plan B
  • 22:57 - 22:59
or plan Z, so the plan has
  • 22:59 - 23:01
always been the same from eternity
  • 23:01 - 23:03
    through eternity. Amen?
  • 23:03 - 23:04
    (Derek, Team) Amen.
  • 23:04 - 23:05
    (Sabina) We are going
  • 23:05 - 23:06
to be looking now at the witness
  • 23:06 - 23:08
of a beautiful, beautiful story here
  • 23:08 - 23:10
that was left in the book of John.
  • 23:10 - 23:12
    It's the witness of Mary.
  • 23:12 - 23:14
So we move from the prophetic witness
  • 23:14 - 23:17
of Abraham to now learn about the witness
  • 23:17 - 23:19
of a person that actually spent time
  • 23:19 - 23:21
    with Jesus and saw Jesus
  • 23:21 - 23:22
    right in front of her.
  • 23:22 - 23:25
So maybe, Gladys, if you'll take us
  • 23:25 - 23:27
to the book of John, and we are going
  • 23:27 - 23:31
to start off in chapter 12,
  • 23:31 - 23:33
and if you'll read verses 1 to 3.
  • 23:33 - 23:34
And I would like us all
  • 23:34 - 23:36
    to already be considering,
  • 23:36 - 23:39
why did Mary anoint the feet of Jesus
  • 23:39 - 23:43
    with an expensive ointment? Gladys.
  • 23:43 - 23:44
    (Gladys) And I'm reading
  • 23:44 - 23:45
    from the New International Version,
  • 23:45 - 23:49
    John, chapter 12, verses 1 to 3:
  • 24:25 - 24:27
(Sabina) So why do you think
  • 24:27 - 24:29
    that Mary anointed the feet...?
    Yes, Jason.
  • 24:29 - 24:30
(Jason) We understand that it was
  • 24:30 - 24:32
before His burial, you know, that He
  • 24:32 - 24:34
would be anointed, but also her devotion.
  • 24:34 - 24:36
I mean, this woman had been delivered
  • 24:36 - 24:37
    from, like, seven demons,
  • 24:37 - 24:39
    so her love for Jesus,
  • 24:39 - 24:41
she was always at His feet, and so this is
  • 24:41 - 24:43
an opportunity for her to express that
  • 24:43 - 24:44
    in such a loving way.
  • 24:44 - 24:45
    (Sabina) Yes, Derek.
  • 24:45 - 24:47
(Derek) So, I can only conclude
  • 24:47 - 24:50
that she was led by the Spirit to do that.
  • 24:50 - 24:53
This was very intimate, I mean, pouring
  • 24:53 - 24:58
    and wiping with her hair.
  • 24:58 - 24:59
    I don't think she
  • 24:59 - 25:01
    thought that up by herself.
  • 25:01 - 25:03
I think the Holy Spirit impressed her.
  • 25:03 - 25:06
I'm not sure she even fully realized
  • 25:06 - 25:08
she was anointing for His burial.
  • 25:08 - 25:10
I think Jason's right; she was thinking,
  • 25:10 - 25:12
    "Well, I love my Savior;
  • 25:12 - 25:14
    He's delivered me."
  • 25:14 - 25:17
But sometimes I believe the Holy Spirit
  • 25:17 - 25:20
impresses us to do things, and later we
  • 25:20 - 25:24
    may understand the full implications
  • 25:24 - 25:25
    of what we're doing.
  • 25:25 - 25:27
(Sabina) That's right, so she was
  • 25:27 - 25:29
    surely very devoted.
  • 25:29 - 25:31
    She had already experienced Jesus
  • 25:31 - 25:32
to a point that she would do
  • 25:32 - 25:36
such a pouring out of the things
  • 25:36 - 25:38
    that she had on hand
  • 25:38 - 25:40
as an expression of her inner experience
  • 25:40 - 25:41
    with God. Yes, Puia.
  • 25:41 - 25:44
(Puia) Some have noted that she spent
  • 25:44 - 25:48
a year's wage on that anointment.
  • 25:48 - 25:49
    Think about that,
  • 25:49 - 25:51
    like one whole year's wage;
  • 25:51 - 25:53
    that's a lot of money.
  • 25:53 - 25:56
And for her to be willing to dedicate that
  • 25:56 - 25:58
    to Jesus shows that she
  • 25:58 - 26:00
really loved Jesus, and she was
  • 26:00 - 26:02
    fully surrendered to Jesus.
  • 26:02 - 26:03
    (Sabina) That's right.
  • 26:03 - 26:05
And you know what I think is
  • 26:05 - 26:07
so interesting is that Jesus is known
  • 26:07 - 26:12
as the Christ or also the Messiah,
  • 26:12 - 26:13
and if there is one time apart
  • 26:13 - 26:16
from when we see that Jesus
  • 26:16 - 26:17
    was anointed in His baptism
  • 26:17 - 26:19
    by the Holy Spirit,
  • 26:19 - 26:24
we would say that the only time
  • 26:24 - 26:27
we see in the New Testament when Jesus
  • 26:27 - 26:29
    is actually being anointed
  • 26:29 - 26:31
    with oil is this event.
  • 26:31 - 26:33
    Have you considered that?
  • 26:33 - 26:36
So, not only do we see here the testimony
  • 26:36 - 26:39
of a woman who had a love for Jesus,
  • 26:39 - 26:41
but God was also using her
  • 26:41 - 26:42
    in a very special way.
  • 26:42 - 26:45
    Anointings were given to kings
  • 26:45 - 26:48
and to people who had a special role
  • 26:48 - 26:52
to play, and God used this woman,
  • 26:52 - 26:57
of all people, a person that had a heart
  • 26:57 - 27:01
to pour, to do this very anointing
  • 27:01 - 27:04
that was done only by the high priests
  • 27:04 - 27:06
    in very specific situations.
  • 27:06 - 27:09
    Okay, yes, Cory.
  • 27:09 - 27:11
(Cory) I was just going to add to it,
  • 27:11 - 27:13
and it actually goes along with what you
  • 27:13 - 27:14
    were saying perfectly.
  • 27:14 - 27:16
    If you've ever smelled spikenard,
  • 27:16 - 27:18
    it's very, very strong.
  • 27:18 - 27:19
    And so, this being done
  • 27:19 - 27:22
before His crucifixion, it probably was
  • 27:22 - 27:24
    very strong on Him still
  • 27:24 - 27:26
    throughout that whole time.
  • 27:26 - 27:28
So, if you think about the people
  • 27:28 - 27:31
He interacted with during that time,
  • 27:31 - 27:33
    smelling the smell of kings,
  • 27:33 - 27:35
of the wealthy, and they're crucifying
  • 27:35 - 27:39
this Man who had done nothing wrong,
  • 27:39 - 27:41
    it's another blessing
  • 27:41 - 27:43
or another aspect to think about.
  • 27:43 - 27:44
    (Sabina) That's right, Cory.
  • 27:44 - 27:46
And not only that, but if you look
  • 27:46 - 27:48
a little further in John, chapter 12,
  • 27:48 - 27:51
we are going to see the Triumphal Entry
  • 27:51 - 27:54
of Jesus in this last last week,
  • 27:54 - 27:55
    in the Passion week.
  • 27:55 - 27:59
So imagine that Jesus entered Jerusalem
  • 27:59 - 28:01
with that smell of a king.
  • 28:01 - 28:03
    Right, think about this.
  • 28:03 - 28:05
So we are going to look a little further
  • 28:05 - 28:08
into that story, and maybe, Tendi,
  • 28:08 - 28:11
if you will read for us from John,
  • 28:11 - 28:14
    chapter 12, from verses 4 to 8,
  • 28:14 - 28:15
and we are going to see the reactions
  • 28:15 - 28:17
    of some of those present
  • 28:17 - 28:19
to this outpouring of love from her.
  • 28:19 - 28:20
What did they say, and how did
  • 28:20 - 28:23
    Jesus respond to them?
  • 28:23 - 28:24
(Tendi) Thank you, Sabina, and I'll
  • 28:24 - 28:27
be reading from the New King James:
  • 29:15 - 29:16
    (Sabina) Oh, wow.
  • 29:16 - 29:18
So, what are some of the reactions
  • 29:18 - 29:20
you see here, and how did Jesus
  • 29:20 - 29:24
    respond to them? Yes, Jason.
  • 29:24 - 29:27
(Jason) Of course, it looked like
it was a waste of money.
  • 29:27 - 29:29
Like, why would you even do that?
  • 29:29 - 29:30
    It could be better used
  • 29:30 - 29:32
for something else, like the "poor."
  • 29:32 - 29:34
But we understand that that wasn't
    the motive of Judas.
  • 29:34 - 29:37
(Sabina) Right, of all people, it would be
  • 29:37 - 29:39
Judas who was the one criticizing
  • 29:39 - 29:41
    her gesture, right? Derek.
  • 29:41 - 29:43
(Derek) I like how you emphasized
  • 29:43 - 29:47
that that fragrance stayed with Jesus.
  • 29:47 - 29:51
And I wonder if Mary looked back and said,
  • 29:51 - 29:54
    "That was even more significant
  • 29:54 - 29:56
    than I ever realized."
  • 29:56 - 29:59
In fact, when Jesus said, "She anointed me
  • 29:59 - 30:00
    for my burial," I wonder
  • 30:00 - 30:04
    if she [looked wide-eyed], right?
  • 30:04 - 30:07
We may think, well, no, she understood
  • 30:07 - 30:09
    all of that; everything was...
  • 30:09 - 30:11
I imagine, back to our lives,
  • 30:11 - 30:13
when the Holy Spirit guides us
  • 30:13 - 30:17
to be a witness of Jesus, who He is,
  • 30:17 - 30:20
that God can do miraculous things.
  • 30:20 - 30:24
And we'll look back with joy and say,
  • 30:24 - 30:28
    "God, You're amazing!" Right?
  • 30:28 - 30:30
    (Sabina) That's beautiful.
  • 30:30 - 30:32
    And His attitude towards her
  • 30:32 - 30:35
was one of acceptance, of affirmation.
  • 30:35 - 30:38
It was not like Judas, of trying
  • 30:38 - 30:43
to tell her to withhold from serving
    Him in love.
  • 30:43 - 30:45
But I think it's very important also
  • 30:45 - 30:48
for me to highlight here that Judas
  • 30:48 - 30:50
was part of the entourage of Jesus.
  • 30:50 - 30:53
    He had a big responsibility,
  • 30:53 - 30:56
the responsibility of carrying the funds
  • 30:56 - 30:58
that were to be used in their mission.
  • 30:58 - 31:01
And of all people, the one
  • 31:01 - 31:05
who had been entrusted with that power,
  • 31:05 - 31:07
he was the one who was criticizing
  • 31:07 - 31:08
the very person that God was
  • 31:08 - 31:11
    about to use. Yes, Travis.
  • 31:11 - 31:16
(Travis) As I was reading and thinking
  • 31:16 - 31:18
about this story, I was most impressed
  • 31:18 - 31:20
    with how Jesus responded,
  • 31:20 - 31:22
and that is, "Let her alone."
  • 31:22 - 31:23
    (Sabina) Right.
  • 31:23 - 31:24
    (Travis) He's always concerned
  • 31:24 - 31:28
    about His people, you know.
  • 31:28 - 31:30
John, chapter 10, "I have them
  • 31:30 - 31:32
in My hands, and no one can
  • 31:32 - 31:34
snatch them out of My hands."
  • 31:34 - 31:36
Here He's coming to her aid.
  • 31:36 - 31:38
She's serving Him and He says,
  • 31:38 - 31:40
    "Leave her alone."
  • 31:40 - 31:41
I was just impressed by that.
  • 31:41 - 31:43
    (Sabina) That's quite outstanding, right,
  • 31:43 - 31:45
especially in a context where women
  • 31:45 - 31:49
were not seen or regarded in society
  • 31:49 - 31:51
as having a word or being able
  • 31:51 - 31:54
    to [spend so much money
  • 31:54 - 31:56
on something] of their own volition.
  • 31:56 - 31:57
I wonder if someone was wondering,
  • 31:57 - 32:00
"Oh, did she get permission from Lazarus?"
  • 32:00 - 32:03
She was a sister of Lazarus.
  • 32:03 - 32:05
    It crosses my mind.
  • 32:05 - 32:09
But now she is being defended by Jesus
  • 32:09 - 32:10
    who not only accepts that
  • 32:10 - 32:12
but also makes sure to say,
  • 32:12 - 32:14
"Let her alone; she is Mine."
  • 32:14 - 32:18
So, let's make sure, when we also see
  • 32:18 - 32:20
the outpouring of an expression of love
  • 32:20 - 32:22
from people towards God, that we are able
  • 32:22 - 32:24
to recognize it and be sensitive.
  • 32:24 - 32:25
And how are some of the ways
  • 32:25 - 32:29
that we, ourselves, can also express love
  • 32:29 - 32:32
to Jesus as our Messiah? Yes, Viara.
  • 32:32 - 32:34
(Viara) I talk to more and more people
  • 32:34 - 32:36
who say, "Well, I'm saved, so there is
  • 32:36 - 32:38
nothing really I can do to deserve
  • 32:38 - 32:40
my salvation," or, "I can stay
  • 32:40 - 32:43
the way I am, and I don't have
  • 32:43 - 32:44
    to do anything for God."
  • 32:44 - 32:47
But I think Jesus said, "If you love Me,
  • 32:47 - 32:48
    you will keep My commandments."
  • 32:48 - 32:50
And for me, this is like when you
  • 32:50 - 32:51
    are in a marriage.
  • 32:51 - 32:52
You don't have to do anything, but you
  • 32:52 - 32:54
do it because you love this person.
  • 32:54 - 32:56
And if you never talk about your husband,
  • 32:56 - 33:00
and if you never talk to him, about him,
  • 33:00 - 33:01
or listen to him, then maybe you don't
  • 33:01 - 33:04
have a real relationship with him.
  • 33:04 - 33:08
(Sabina) Okay, so [one very important way
  • 33:08 - 33:09
we can pour out love] towards God
  • 33:09 - 33:13
[is to pour out love] towards people,
  • 33:13 - 33:15
because this is the heart of the Law,
  • 33:15 - 33:17
love for God and love for people.
  • 33:17 - 33:21
We do those things because He loved us,
  • 33:21 - 33:24
and so we also are invited to be loving.
  • 33:24 - 33:26
    Any other thoughts? Yes, Jason.
  • 33:26 - 33:28
(Jason) There are a plethora of things
  • 33:28 - 33:30
we can do to be able to show that love.
  • 33:30 - 33:32
But what I like to do is actually go
  • 33:32 - 33:33
to food pantries and help people out
  • 33:33 - 33:34
    because I know,
  • 33:34 - 33:35
    especially in this economy
  • 33:35 - 33:37
things are hard, so I am able to be there
  • 33:37 - 33:41
to be the feet and hands of Jesus
  • 33:41 - 33:42
during those times to help people out
  • 33:42 - 33:43
    with an actual meal.
  • 33:43 - 33:46
(Sabina) Okay, so charitable deeds also.
  • 33:46 - 33:51
I also saw Zandile; you had your hand up?
  • 33:51 - 33:53
(Zandile) Yes, and I wanted to say
  • 33:53 - 33:58
that Judas was not of the same nature
  • 33:58 - 34:01
as Jesus Christ; he was one of the twelve
  • 34:01 - 34:02
    when he was thinking
  • 34:02 - 34:04
    [of things differently]
  • 34:04 - 34:06
from the nature of Jesus Christ.
  • 34:06 - 34:08
And one of the [ways in which]
  • 34:08 - 34:11
we can express our love to other people
  • 34:11 - 34:14
is to be of the same mindset
  • 34:14 - 34:15
    as Jesus Christ and have
  • 34:15 - 34:17
the nature of God, the kindness
  • 34:17 - 34:20
of God within us, so that it flows
  • 34:20 - 34:24
from within us to all those around us.
  • 34:24 - 34:25
    (Sabina) That's wonderful.
  • 34:25 - 34:27
So, there are many things that we can do.
  • 34:27 - 34:29
And I'm just going to get
  • 34:29 - 34:31
    Cory's comment also.
  • 34:31 - 34:33
Cory, I want to hear you, and then we are
  • 34:33 - 34:35
going to move to the testimony of a person
  • 34:35 - 34:37
that didn't have the same type
  • 34:37 - 34:41
of heart as Mary. Yes, Cory.
  • 34:41 - 34:43
(Cory) I think a lot of these things
  • 34:43 - 34:45
that bubble out of us can only come
  • 34:45 - 34:47
    from a relationship with Christ,
  • 34:47 - 34:48
    and that is done
  • 34:48 - 34:49
    by spending time with Him.
  • 34:49 - 34:51
And you see couples that, when they
  • 34:51 - 34:53
start dating or get married, start
  • 34:53 - 34:54
    looking alike because they
  • 34:54 - 34:55
    start acting alike.
  • 34:55 - 34:58
    That's how we reflect Christ
  • 34:58 - 34:59
    to those around us,
  • 34:59 - 35:00
spend time with Him, know Him,
  • 35:00 - 35:02
so that we can reflect Him.
  • 35:02 - 35:04
    (Sabina) That's wonderful, yeah.
  • 35:04 - 35:06
I really love this testimony of Mary.
  • 35:06 - 35:07
    I think it's so inspiring,
  • 35:07 - 35:10
Derek and friends, because we all
  • 35:10 - 35:13
are also invited to pour out everything
  • 35:13 - 35:15
    we have to Jesus.
  • 35:15 - 35:16
And I wonder if there is someone
  • 35:16 - 35:18
watching us, and they have been
  • 35:18 - 35:20
withholding some parts of their life
  • 35:20 - 35:22
    from God, maybe afraid
  • 35:22 - 35:23
    of what could happen.
  • 35:23 - 35:25
Maybe it's something very precious to you,
  • 35:25 - 35:28
right, the salary of your whole year,
  • 35:28 - 35:30
or even [something much more] deep
  • 35:30 - 35:32
in your heart, in your mind.
  • 35:32 - 35:34
But, you know, don't withhold those things
  • 35:34 - 35:36
from Jesus, because nothing you bestow,
  • 35:36 - 35:39
    in true worship, upon Jesus
  • 35:39 - 35:41
    will ever, ever be wasted.
  • 35:41 - 35:43
Just look at what He did
  • 35:43 - 35:45
and how He protected this woman,
  • 35:45 - 35:47
and how it multiplies, as Derek
  • 35:47 - 35:49
was sharing, even to the cross.
  • 35:49 - 35:52
There is nothing that you pour upon Jesus
  • 35:52 - 35:54
that you are not going to see Him
  • 35:54 - 35:57
taking care of and multiplying it further.
  • 35:57 - 35:58
    (Derek, Team) Amen.
  • 35:58 - 36:00
    (Sabina) So, let's look here
  • 36:00 - 36:03
at the witness of Pontius Pilate.
  • 36:03 - 36:05
So, now we are moving from Mary,
  • 36:05 - 36:06
    a person that had
  • 36:06 - 36:08
    this generous heart towards God,
  • 36:08 - 36:10
to a person that was more reluctant.
  • 36:10 - 36:14
    So maybe, Cory, if you will read for us;
  • 36:14 - 36:16
we are still going to be reading
  • 36:16 - 36:19
from the book of John, chapter 18,
  • 36:19 - 36:24
verse 38, and then chapter 19, verse 4.
  • 36:24 - 36:26
And then we'll be thinking of what we can
  • 36:26 - 36:28
    conclude from the testimony
  • 36:28 - 36:34
    of Pilate regarding Jesus.
  • 36:34 - 36:36
(Cory) John 18:38 to start with,
  • 36:36 - 36:39
out of the New King James:
  • 36:55 - 36:59
    And then 19, verse 4:
  • 37:12 - 37:13
    (Sabina) Thank you.
  • 37:13 - 37:15
    So, what are your thoughts?
  • 37:15 - 37:16
    What can we conclude
  • 37:16 - 37:18
    from the testimony of Pilate
  • 37:18 - 37:21
    regarding Jesus? Yes, Puia.
  • 37:21 - 37:23
    (Puia) Pilate stood
  • 37:23 - 37:27
    before the truth in person.
  • 37:27 - 37:30
Jesus is the truth, and Jesus said,
  • 37:30 - 37:31
    "I came to make known
  • 37:31 - 37:32
    the truth to the world."
  • 37:32 - 37:34
And Pilate asked what we could consider
  • 37:34 - 37:36
one of the most important questions
  • 37:36 - 37:38
that we could ever ask God,
  • 37:38 - 37:39
    "What is truth?"
  • 37:39 - 37:43
But then the text said he then went away.
  • 37:43 - 37:47
    He didn't stay to receive
  • 37:47 - 37:49
    the revelation of God.
  • 37:49 - 37:51
So, there is that lesson for us
  • 37:51 - 37:54
to stay a little longer and allow God
  • 37:54 - 37:56
    to reveal Himself to us.
  • 37:56 - 37:57
    (Sabina) That's right, Puia.
  • 37:57 - 37:59
    Maybe if Pilate had stayed
  • 37:59 - 38:01
    a little longer, right, paid
  • 38:01 - 38:02
    a little more attention
  • 38:02 - 38:05
to what he had right in front of his eyes,
  • 38:05 - 38:07
the story could have been different,
  • 38:07 - 38:10
at least for him and his family.
  • 38:10 - 38:13
So, I also find it interesting that he
  • 38:13 - 38:16
    found no fault in Jesus,
  • 38:16 - 38:19
even though he didn't resonate with Jesus.
  • 38:19 - 38:22
So, in that staying a little longer,
  • 38:22 - 38:24
maybe we are kind of already seeing
  • 38:24 - 38:27
something happening, and it may not
  • 38:27 - 38:28
    always make sense to you,
  • 38:28 - 38:30
because it was not making sense to Pilate.
  • 38:30 - 38:32
    He said, "What is truth?"
  • 38:32 - 38:33
Like, it seemed like truth for him
  • 38:33 - 38:35
    was not something that obvious
  • 38:35 - 38:37
    or for Jesus it was,
  • 38:37 - 38:39
and he should have taken a little longer
  • 38:39 - 38:42
to maybe understand that, even if he
  • 38:42 - 38:43
    couldn't reconcile that,
  • 38:43 - 38:46
that it was exactly what was happening.
    Yes, Gladys.
  • 38:46 - 38:48
    (Gladys) At this point, Pilate
  • 38:48 - 38:50
    had already heard about Jesus.
  • 38:50 - 38:52
He had heard about His ministry.
  • 38:52 - 38:53
He had heard about the miracles.
  • 38:53 - 38:55
So, even though he didn't have
  • 38:55 - 38:57
the full revelation, even though he
  • 38:57 - 39:00
didn't take the time to spend,
  • 39:00 - 39:02
he could have at least been
  • 39:02 - 39:05
a little bit more conscious towards
  • 39:05 - 39:08
the Person that he was dealing with,
  • 39:08 - 39:09
    but he chose not to.
  • 39:09 - 39:11
    (Sabina) Right, and we are
  • 39:11 - 39:14
going to see further, maybe if Lezlie
  • 39:14 - 39:17
would take us to Matthew 27:19,
  • 39:17 - 39:18
    that there was more revelation
  • 39:18 - 39:21
that was given to Pilate about Jesus.
  • 39:21 - 39:25
So, let's read there in Matthew 27:19,
  • 39:25 - 39:26
and we are going to learn
  • 39:26 - 39:27
    about this revelation.
  • 39:27 - 39:28
    (Lezlie) I'm reading
  • 39:28 - 39:32
    from the New Living Translation,
    Matthew 27:19:
  • 39:47 - 39:48
    (Sabina) Oh, wow.
  • 39:48 - 39:50
    So, what special revelation
  • 39:50 - 39:53
is being given here to him?
  • 39:53 - 39:56
He had experienced what he saw
  • 39:56 - 39:58
as his own witness, and now...Yes, Derek.
  • 39:58 - 40:00
(Derek) And even if we don't know
  • 40:00 - 40:01
    the content of the dream,
  • 40:01 - 40:05
we see the love of God, that God
  • 40:05 - 40:07
    loves Pilate, that Jesus wants
  • 40:07 - 40:10
    Pilate to be saved.
  • 40:10 - 40:12
    But in my favorite book
  • 40:12 - 40:14
on the life of Jesus, The Desire of Ages,
  • 40:14 - 40:16
it speaks about that dream given
  • 40:16 - 40:18
    to Pilate's wife, a revelation
  • 40:18 - 40:20
of what would happen, including the coming
  • 40:20 - 40:23
    of Jesus in glory.
  • 40:23 - 40:26
    And one translation said nightmare,
  • 40:26 - 40:27
    mine just said a dream,
  • 40:27 - 40:30
I don't know; it was troubling to her
  • 40:30 - 40:33
    because this innocent man
  • 40:33 - 40:36
    was the King of Glory.
  • 40:36 - 40:39
But even if we didn't know the dream,
  • 40:39 - 40:42
I see the love of God,
  • 40:42 - 40:44
"What else can I do," you know,
  • 40:44 - 40:50
"to reach out in a loving rescue, " right,
  • 40:50 - 40:52
    salvation to this person.
  • 40:52 - 40:53
    (Sabina) That's right.
  • 40:53 - 40:55
So, He not only gave that opportunity
  • 40:55 - 40:57
for him to witness for himself,
  • 40:57 - 40:59
and he failed to stay a little longer,
  • 40:59 - 41:00
    as Puia was saying,
  • 41:00 - 41:02
but He also then took the time
  • 41:02 - 41:04
    to communicate with the person
  • 41:04 - 41:05
who was the most important person
  • 41:05 - 41:08
in his life, I suppose, to see
  • 41:08 - 41:11
if maybe he would listen to his wife.
  • 41:11 - 41:13
Isn't that powerful, to see the ways
  • 41:13 - 41:16
that God is trying to find our hearts.
  • 41:16 - 41:20
So, how do you explain, then, the actions
  • 41:20 - 41:22
of Pilate in light of his testimony
  • 41:22 - 41:24
    and special revelation
  • 41:24 - 41:25
    that was given to him?
  • 41:25 - 41:27
How can we explain that he
  • 41:27 - 41:31
still wouldn't hear that? Yes, Gladys.
  • 41:31 - 41:33
(Gladys) Well, we have been talking
  • 41:33 - 41:35
about how Satan just blinds us
  • 41:35 - 41:37
    and makes us deaf.
  • 41:37 - 41:40
    And obviously in his response
  • 41:40 - 41:42
to the revelation he has received
  • 41:42 - 41:43
and his response to the dream
  • 41:43 - 41:45
    that his wife had,
  • 41:45 - 41:48
he still did not open his heart
  • 41:48 - 41:50
to accept Jesus for whom he was seeing
  • 41:50 - 41:52
    that He could be.
  • 41:52 - 41:54
    (Sabina) Yes, Zandile, I see
  • 41:54 - 41:58
    you have your hand up.
  • 41:58 - 41:59
    (Zandile) As you were questioning
  • 41:59 - 42:01
I thought of the fact that Pilate
  • 42:01 - 42:06
    and his wife were Romans,
  • 42:06 - 42:10
but we find God revealing Himself
  • 42:10 - 42:13
to the Romans, the Gentiles at that time,
  • 42:13 - 42:15
people who did not have anything
  • 42:15 - 42:17
to do with God, people who did not
  • 42:17 - 42:18
know Him, but He comes to them.
  • 42:18 - 42:20
    Even Jesus, He was
  • 42:20 - 42:22
about to be a sacrifice for everybody,
  • 42:22 - 42:24
    but God is saying,
  • 42:24 - 42:25
    "Hey, listen, have nothing..."
  • 42:25 - 42:27
He is revealing Himself to show
  • 42:27 - 42:29
that He cares for all humanity,
  • 42:29 - 42:32
for everyone, not only the Jews.
  • 42:32 - 42:33
But in light of the question
  • 42:33 - 42:35
that you just asked, I wanted to say
  • 42:35 - 42:38
    that God had already said,
  • 42:38 - 42:40
    "I have given today
  • 42:40 - 42:42
in front of you life or death.
  • 42:42 - 42:45
It's up to you to, you know, choose life
  • 42:45 - 42:47
    or you choose death."
  • 42:47 - 42:48
    (Derek) Wow.
  • 42:48 - 42:50
(Sabina) Yes. Puia, I see your hand up.
  • 42:50 - 42:52
Would you take us to John 19,
  • 42:52 - 42:54
    verses 1 and 16.
  • 42:54 - 42:55
    We are going to see
  • 42:55 - 42:56
    a little bit more there,
  • 42:56 - 42:57
and then maybe you can add...
  • 42:57 - 42:59
(Puia) Sure, and I'll be reading
  • 42:59 - 43:02
from the New King James Version,
  • 43:02 - 43:03
    John 19, verse 1:
  • 43:08 - 43:10
    And verse 16:
  • 43:18 - 43:21
What I wanted to comment on, Sabina,
  • 43:21 - 43:23
    was that Pilate was
  • 43:23 - 43:25
    pressured by the crowd.
  • 43:25 - 43:29
It may be easy, to kind of, blame him,
  • 43:29 - 43:31
but I believe there is also danger
  • 43:31 - 43:33
for us today that we, too, can
  • 43:33 - 43:35
    be pressured to go along
  • 43:35 - 43:37
    with the majority.
  • 43:37 - 43:40
It's not fun to be different
  • 43:40 - 43:44
from the crowd, so one reason Pilate,
  • 43:44 - 43:46
while knowing that Jesus was innocent,
  • 43:46 - 43:49
why did He still deliver Jesus
  • 43:49 - 43:50
    to be crucified?
  • 43:50 - 43:52
    Well, because he gave in
  • 43:52 - 43:54
to the pressure of the crowd.
  • 43:54 - 43:56
(Sabina) That's right, he gave in
  • 43:56 - 43:57
to the pressure of the crowd.
  • 43:57 - 43:58
And he also had a role,
  • 43:58 - 44:00
and sometimes the pressure can even be
  • 44:00 - 44:03
    because of a certain profession
    that you have.
  • 44:03 - 44:05
Because he had a role to play,
  • 44:05 - 44:07
and part of his role to play
  • 44:07 - 44:10
was to make sure that all parts
  • 44:10 - 44:13
and communities were satisfied and happy.
  • 44:13 - 44:15
So one day [he had to satisfy one group]
  • 44:15 - 44:17
    and another day [another group],
  • 44:17 - 44:20
so he had to reconcile his call
  • 44:20 - 44:24
as a leader with the witness of Jesus
  • 44:24 - 44:26
that was right in front of him.
  • 44:26 - 44:29
And it seems like he failed. Yes, Travis.
  • 44:29 - 44:31
(Travis) I was thinking of a song
  • 44:31 - 44:32
that I sang as a kid, Stand up,
  • 44:32 - 44:34
    Stand up, for Jesus.
  • 44:34 - 44:37
Jesus was going to the cross,
  • 44:37 - 44:41
whether Pilate flogged Him or not,
  • 44:41 - 44:44
    because it was His time.
  • 44:44 - 44:47
But he could have taken a stand for Jesus,
  • 44:47 - 44:49
    and he chose, as mentioned,
  • 44:49 - 44:50
    not to take a stand
  • 44:50 - 44:52
    because of popular opinion.
  • 44:52 - 44:54
And I think there is a lesson
  • 44:54 - 44:56
for us to learn, as when we're asked
  • 44:56 - 44:58
    to take a stand, we
  • 44:58 - 45:00
    might not change a situation,
  • 45:00 - 45:02
    but we can stand.
  • 45:02 - 45:03
    We can stand for Jesus.
  • 45:03 - 45:04
    (Sabina) Yes. So I see
  • 45:04 - 45:06
many hands up, and I would love
  • 45:06 - 45:08
    to continue talking about that,
  • 45:08 - 45:09
but we are going to move
  • 45:09 - 45:10
    to our next witness.
  • 45:10 - 45:12
And, Cory, if you will help us there.
  • 45:12 - 45:14
We are going to be looking
  • 45:14 - 45:16
    at the witness of Thomas,
  • 45:16 - 45:18
    Thomas who struggled to believe
  • 45:18 - 45:20
that Jesus was risen from the dead.
  • 45:20 - 45:22
So we already know, we heard
  • 45:22 - 45:25
from the story of Mary and her testimony.
  • 45:25 - 45:26
We've seen here in the testimony,
  • 45:26 - 45:28
    also, of Pilate, who was
  • 45:28 - 45:30
a completely different person than Mary,
  • 45:30 - 45:31
    a different background,
  • 45:31 - 45:32
    a different response.
  • 45:32 - 45:34
Now, let's look at Thomas, who was
  • 45:34 - 45:38
one of those close followers of Jesus.
  • 45:38 - 45:41
So, if you'll read for us from John,
  • 45:41 - 45:46
chapter 20, from verses 19 to 24, Cory.
  • 45:46 - 45:47
    (Cory) I'm reading
  • 45:47 - 45:48
    from the New King James:
  • 46:55 - 46:56
    (Sabina) Okay, so, Cory,
  • 46:56 - 46:59
just stick with us a little longer here.
  • 46:59 - 47:00
I saw you had your hand up,
  • 47:00 - 47:02
and you just read this text.
  • 47:02 - 47:04
Why do you think that Thomas
  • 47:04 - 47:05
    was struggling to believe
  • 47:05 - 47:07
that Jesus was risen from the dead?
  • 47:07 - 47:09
    What are your thoughts?
  • 47:09 - 47:10
    (Cory) I think some people
  • 47:10 - 47:12
just need to [feel and] see things
  • 47:12 - 47:13
with their own hands and eyes,
  • 47:13 - 47:15
and there were so many doubts
  • 47:15 - 47:16
    because he really believed Jesus
  • 47:16 - 47:20
was going to be a king on Earth right now.
  • 47:20 - 47:23
And [with] his belief, he doubted
  • 47:23 - 47:25
    everything that was going on,
  • 47:25 - 47:27
so he needed to see it himself.
  • 47:27 - 47:29
(Sabina) Okay, thank you so much.
  • 47:29 - 47:30
And we are going to look
  • 47:30 - 47:31
    a little further here.
  • 47:31 - 47:33
    Maybe, Joshua, if you'll read
  • 47:33 - 47:37
for us John 20:25,26, and we are
  • 47:37 - 47:38
    going to be thinking
  • 47:38 - 47:40
[of what more we can learn]
  • 47:40 - 47:43
about Thomas from these two verses?
  • 47:43 - 47:44
    (Joshua) Alright, I'll be reading
  • 47:44 - 47:49
from the New King James Version,
    John 20:25-26:
  • 48:18 - 48:20
(Sabina) So, what can we learn
  • 48:20 - 48:21
    about Thomas? Yes, Gladys.
  • 48:21 - 48:24
(Gladys) I think that he is like what Cory
  • 48:24 - 48:25
was saying, that he is somebody
  • 48:25 - 48:28
    that needs something tangible,
  • 48:28 - 48:30
    that needs tangible evidence
  • 48:30 - 48:32
    before they can believe.
  • 48:32 - 48:35
But I just love that Jesus, even though He
  • 48:35 - 48:39
    knew that he didn't believe,
  • 48:39 - 48:41
He's so loving, the love of God
  • 48:41 - 48:43
is so big, that He reaches
  • 48:43 - 48:45
    even beyond our unbelief
  • 48:45 - 48:48
    and reveals Himself to us.
  • 48:48 - 48:50
    (Derek) I always struggled
  • 48:50 - 48:53
with calling him "Thomas the Doubter."
  • 48:53 - 48:55
    I think he's a skeptic.
  • 48:55 - 48:57
I think, like Cory said, he may need
  • 48:57 - 48:59
    a little more tangible evidence.
  • 48:59 - 49:03
But I want us to note that he is there
  • 49:03 - 49:06
    in the upper room, right,
  • 49:06 - 49:07
eight days later; he is there.
  • 49:07 - 49:13
So, his heart is open, and I'm so thankful
  • 49:13 - 49:14
    for what happens next,
  • 49:14 - 49:16
    because while Jesus says,
  • 49:16 - 49:18
    "Blessed are those who believe
  • 49:18 - 49:20
    even though they don't see,"
  • 49:20 - 49:24
    He doesn't say, "Thomas, you're a loser.
  • 49:24 - 49:27
    Leave the room."
  • 49:27 - 49:29
I see the love of Jesus there.
  • 49:29 - 49:32
But I want to affirm Thomas,
  • 49:32 - 49:35
    even though he was struggling,
  • 49:35 - 49:37
he showed up with the people of God.
  • 49:37 - 49:38
    (Team) Amen.
  • 49:38 - 49:40
    (Sabina) So, looking to that,
  • 49:40 - 49:43
maybe, Jason, if you'll read for us.
  • 49:43 - 49:44
We are going to look at the way
  • 49:44 - 49:48
    that Jesus encourages Thomas
  • 49:48 - 49:50
    and also how Thomas
  • 49:50 - 49:53
    finally responds to Jesus,
  • 49:53 - 49:55
    so verses 27 to 29,
  • 49:55 - 49:57
if you'll read that for us.
  • 49:57 - 49:59
(Jason) My pleasure, and the Bible says:
  • 50:28 - 50:29
    (Sabina) Thank you.
  • 50:29 - 50:30
So, first of all, how did
  • 50:30 - 50:33
    Jesus encourage Thomas?
  • 50:33 - 50:36
Do you have any thoughts about it?
    Yes, Travis.
  • 50:36 - 50:40
(Travis) I'm just really impressed, first,
  • 50:40 - 50:43
by Thomas' request, and then Jesus giving
  • 50:43 - 50:46
him exactly what he needs to believe.
  • 50:46 - 50:47
We've been going through this study
  • 50:47 - 50:49
of John, and many people were asking
  • 50:49 - 50:53
for signs; Jesus didn't give them a sign.
  • 50:53 - 50:55
And here now Thomas is saying,
  • 50:55 - 50:57
"Unless I see this....," I think it has
  • 50:57 - 50:59
to do with the condition of the heart.
  • 50:59 - 51:00
    I think Derek is right.
  • 51:00 - 51:04
    He wanted to believe,
  • 51:04 - 51:05
    but he wanted evidence.
  • 51:05 - 51:08
And I've been in this situation
  • 51:08 - 51:09
    with Thomas before, and God
  • 51:09 - 51:11
    has revealed Himself to me
  • 51:11 - 51:12
    in a powerful way.
  • 51:12 - 51:15
When your heart is willing and receptive,
  • 51:15 - 51:16
God knows what you need, and He
  • 51:16 - 51:18
will give it and reveal Himself to you.
  • 51:18 - 51:21
(Sabina) Puia. I see so many hands up.
  • 51:21 - 51:23
We're always stirred up with that story.
    Yes, Puia.
  • 51:23 - 51:26
(Puia) I am very encouraged by this story,
  • 51:26 - 51:28
because I myself struggle with doubts
  • 51:28 - 51:30
quite a lot of the time.
  • 51:30 - 51:32
And there could be two types of doubters.
  • 51:32 - 51:35
One group would be doubting towards faith,
  • 51:35 - 51:36
    and one group would be
  • 51:36 - 51:39
    doubting towards unbelief.
  • 51:39 - 51:40
What we see from Thomas is that, yes,
  • 51:40 - 51:42
    he was struggling with doubts,
  • 51:42 - 51:44
but he was doubting towards faith.
  • 51:44 - 51:46
    So, if we are struggling
  • 51:46 - 51:47
    with doubts today, there is
  • 51:47 - 51:49
a lot of encouragement from this story,
  • 51:49 - 51:51
    that Jesus doesn't condemn.
  • 51:51 - 51:53
Instead, the words of Jesus said,
  • 51:53 - 51:55
"Blessed are those who have not
  • 51:55 - 51:58
    seen Me but believe."
  • 51:58 - 51:59
    He's talking about us.
  • 51:59 - 52:01
(Sabina) Yes, so at the same time, Thomas
  • 52:01 - 52:04
    was encouraged by Jesus,
  • 52:04 - 52:06
so Jesus listens to Thomas, He comes
  • 52:06 - 52:08
    towards Thomas and his needs
  • 52:08 - 52:10
in that moment, but at the same time,
  • 52:10 - 52:12
    He uses Thomas' story
  • 52:12 - 52:13
    as an object lesson,
  • 52:13 - 52:16
let's put it this way, for all of us.
  • 52:16 - 52:19
So we that are here, and we do have
  • 52:19 - 52:20
the chance right now to be like, "Oh,
  • 52:20 - 52:23
    Jesus, can I touch it?"
  • 52:23 - 52:26
But He is going to make sure that we know
  • 52:26 - 52:29
that we are more blessed than Thomas
  • 52:29 - 52:31
if we are able to believe without having
  • 52:31 - 52:33
that same experience that he had.
  • 52:33 - 52:36
So, Gladys, just to conclude this part
  • 52:36 - 52:38
    about Thomas, what encouragement
  • 52:38 - 52:41
do you find in this story for your life?
  • 52:41 - 52:43
(Gladys) Well, I feel like the man
  • 52:43 - 52:45
that Jesus asked if he believed,
  • 52:45 - 52:47
    and he said, "I believe,
  • 52:47 - 52:49
    but help my unbelief."
  • 52:49 - 52:52
You know, sometimes we have this doubt,
  • 52:52 - 52:56
but God finds a way to just reveal Himself
  • 52:56 - 52:59
in a personal way to [move]
  • 52:59 - 53:01
towards belief, like Puia was saying.
  • 53:01 - 53:03
    You have doubts, but, yes,
  • 53:03 - 53:05
[He will] move you closer to Him
  • 53:05 - 53:06
    towards believing in Him.
  • 53:06 - 53:08
    (Sabina) Isn't He loving?
  • 53:08 - 53:10
Isn't He so caring, that even if we are
  • 53:10 - 53:13
in that moment of doubt, of challenges,
  • 53:13 - 53:15
He is going to make sure to come
  • 53:15 - 53:17
towards you because He loves you.
  • 53:17 - 53:19
He is not trying to make it hard,
    right, Gladys, for us?
  • 53:19 - 53:20
    (Gladys) He's not.
  • 53:20 - 53:23
(Sabina) He's trying as much as He can
  • 53:23 - 53:25
    to attract us to Him.
  • 53:25 - 53:27
    Thank You, Jesus, for that.
  • 53:27 - 53:30
And so, maybe, Lezlie, if you'll take us
  • 53:30 - 53:31
to the final part of our study, we are
  • 53:31 - 53:33
going to be looking at the way
  • 53:33 - 53:37
in which John concludes his own witness
  • 53:37 - 53:38
because John is also a witness
  • 53:38 - 53:41
of all that, and he gives that witness
  • 53:41 - 53:44
of many things that he saw
  • 53:44 - 53:45
and what he thinks of Jesus.
  • 53:45 - 53:47
So, if you'll take us to John,
  • 53:47 - 53:51
    chapter 20, verses 30 and 31, please.
  • 53:51 - 53:52
    (Lezlie) Okay, I'm reading
  • 53:52 - 53:54
    from the New Living Translation:
  • 54:13 - 54:15
    (Derek, Team) Amen.
  • 54:15 - 54:16
    (Sabina) So, what testimony
  • 54:16 - 54:20
is John giving here? Yes, Travis.
  • 54:20 - 54:22
(Travis) I'm going to make the argument
  • 54:22 - 54:24
that that should be the last verse
  • 54:24 - 54:25
of the Bible, because I think
  • 54:25 - 54:27
    that encapsulates all of Scripture.
  • 54:27 - 54:28
    I think that's the reason
  • 54:28 - 54:30
    all of Scripture was written.
  • 54:30 - 54:33
But John wanted to be sure
  • 54:33 - 54:36
that we knew that that was the reason.
  • 54:36 - 54:38
As a matter of fact, now when I study
  • 54:38 - 54:40
the book of John, and I
  • 54:40 - 54:42
    have that understanding, wow,
  • 54:42 - 54:43
    there's a whole new revelation.
  • 54:43 - 54:45
You read the Bible in a different way
  • 54:45 - 54:46
when you know that that's why
  • 54:46 - 54:48
    it was written.
  • 54:48 - 54:50
(Sabina) Yeah, it seems like John's desire
  • 54:50 - 54:52
was that you and I would believe
  • 54:52 - 54:54
    those things, you know?
  • 54:54 - 54:55
Ultimately, [it was] all he wanted,
  • 54:55 - 54:57
and through the Holy Spirit he
  • 54:57 - 54:59
    was inspired because he knew
  • 54:59 - 55:02
that if we have the life of Jesus,
  • 55:02 - 55:03
    we have eternal life.
  • 55:03 - 55:05
    If we belong to Jesus,
  • 55:05 - 55:06
    we have eternal life.
  • 55:06 - 55:08
And just to conclude here, do you have
  • 55:08 - 55:09
    a story of your own,
  • 55:09 - 55:11
    your testimony about Jesus?
  • 55:11 - 55:12
    We are going to say that in short;
  • 55:12 - 55:14
    we don't have much time.
  • 55:14 - 55:16
Is there something that you can say here
