How do you deal with depression?

  • 0:03 - 0:06
    (Half-Bell)
  • 0:07 - 0:19
    (Bell)
  • 0:34 - 0:40
    My question is:
how do you deal with depression?
  • 0:41 - 0:45
How do you deal with depression?
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    (Thay off-camera)
    Depression?
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    Yeah, depression.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
We have learnt in the last four days,
  • 0:58 - 1:03
    that if something happens,
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    you have to be there
    in order to recognize it.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
So the first thing we do,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    is to recognize the depression
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    and say hello to it.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    Hello! My depression!
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    I know you are there.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
And you have to look deeply to see,
  • 1:24 - 1:28
whether there is a real depression or not.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
A real depression is a kind of thing,
  • 1:31 - 1:38
that can take away our peace, our joy,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    our stability and so on.
  • 1:47 - 1:53
Recognize it, and then look into it,
  • 1:53 - 1:58
    you should have enough time
  • 1:58 - 2:03
to look into it, even to embrace it
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    and to find out why
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    it has come to you.
  • 2:11 - 2:18
    You might have been exposed
    to many things.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    The sounds, the sights,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    the feelings and surroundings,
  • 2:23 - 2:29
    you might have consumed them
    in such a way,
  • 2:29 - 2:36
that has brought that depression to you.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    If possible, you can ask,
  • 2:40 - 2:48
someone to help you to do that.
  • 2:48 - 2:54
    A teacher, a friend, a psychotherapist,
  • 2:54 - 2:59
they can help you to look deeply
    into your depression,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
to find out what kind of roots,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    what kind of nutriment,
  • 3:03 - 3:08
    what kind of consumption,
  • 3:08 - 3:12
you have used in order to feed it,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    to bring it to you.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    This is very important.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
This is practicing the 'First Noble Truth'
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    and the Second Noble Truth'
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    and when you have seen,
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    the ghost,
  • 3:26 - 3:33
the ghost is the root of the depression,
  • 3:33 - 3:36
and the source of food that
  • 3:36 - 3:40
that has brought the depression to you
  • 3:40 - 3:42
and then you know what to do
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    and what not to do.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
Maybe you have to change the environment,
  • 3:47 - 3:53
you have to change your way of consumption,
  • 3:53 - 3:59
    you have to be surrounded
    by more positive elements.
  • 3:59 - 4:04
If you get a new source of nutriment,
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    healthy, sane,
  • 4:08 - 4:11
you don't feed your depression anymore,
  • 4:11 - 4:12
It will have to go by itself,
  • 4:12 - 4:16
you don't have to chase it away.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
That is what you have learnt,
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    during the last many days.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
You can do it by yourself,
  • 4:23 - 4:28
and you can rely on a friend,
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    a brother or sister
in the practice to help you,
  • 4:31 - 4:33
because she knows how to do it,
  • 4:33 - 4:36
he knows how to do it.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    It's a good question.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    (Half-Bell)
  • 4:45 - 4:53
    (Bell)
