How online abuse of women has spiraled out of control

  • Not Synced
    "Ashley Judd,
  • Not Synced
    stupid fucking slut."
  • Not Synced
    "You can sue someone
    for calling them a cunt."
  • Not Synced
"If you can't handle the Intenet,
  • Not Synced
    fuck off, whore."
  • Not Synced
    "I wish Ashley Judd would
    die a horrible death.
  • Not Synced
    She is the absolute worst."
  • Not Synced
    "Ashley Judd, you're the reason
    women shouldn't vote."
  • Not Synced
"'Twisted' is such a bad movie,
  • Not Synced
I don't even want to rape it."
  • Not Synced
    "Whatever you do,
  • Not Synced
    don't tell Ashley Judd she'll
die alone with a dried out vagina."
  • Not Synced
"If I had to fuck an older women,
  • Not Synced
    oh my God,
  • Not Synced
I would fuck the shit out of Ashley Judd,
  • Not Synced
    that bitch is hot AF.
  • Not Synced
The unforgivable shit I would do to her."
  • Not Synced
    Online misogyny is a global
    gender rights tragedy,
  • Not Synced
and it is imperative that it ends.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Girls' and womens' voices
    and out allies' voices
  • Not Synced
    are constrained in ways
  • Not Synced
    that are personally, economically,
    professionally [damaging],
  • Not Synced
    and when we curb abuse,
  • Not Synced
    we will expand freedom.
  • Not Synced
I am a Kentucky basketball fan,
  • Not Synced
so on a fine March day last year,
  • Not Synced
I was doing one of the things I do best:
  • Not Synced
I was cheering for my Wildcats.
  • Not Synced
    The daffodils were blooming,
  • Not Synced
but the referees were not blowing
the whistle when I was telling them to.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Funny,
  • Not Synced
    they're very friendly to me
    before the opening [tip],
  • Not Synced
but they really ignore me during the game.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Three of my players were bleeding,
  • Not Synced
    so I did the next-best thing ...
  • Not Synced
    I tweeted.
  • Not Synced
    [@ArkRazorback dirty play can kiss
    my team's free throw making a --
  • Not Synced
    @KySportsRadio @marchmadness
@espn Bloodied 3 players so far.]
  • Not Synced
It is routine for me to be treated
in the ways I've already described to you.
  • Not Synced
It happens to me every single day
  • Not Synced
    on social media platforms
    such as Twitter and Facebook.
  • Not Synced
Since I joined Twitter in 2011,
  • Not Synced
    misogyny and misogynists
    have amply demonstrated
  • Not Synced
they will dog my every step.
  • Not Synced
    My spirituality,
  • Not Synced
    my faith --
  • Not Synced
being a hillbilly, I can say that,
  • Not Synced
    you can't --
  • Not Synced
all of it is fair game.
  • Not Synced
And I have responded to this
    with various strategies.
  • Not Synced
    I've tried engaging people.
  • Not Synced
This one guy was sending me
    hyper sexual, nasty stuff,
  • Not Synced
and there was a girl in his avatar,
  • Not Synced
and I wrote him back and said,
  • Not Synced
    "Is that your daughter?
  • Not Synced
I feel a lot of fear that you
    may think about
  • Not Synced
and talk to women this way."
  • Not Synced
And he surprised me by saying,
  • Not Synced
    "You know what?
  • Not Synced
    You're right.
  • Not Synced
    I apologize."
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes people want
    to be held accountable.
  • Not Synced
    This one guy was musing
    to I don't know who
  • Not Synced
that maybe I was the definition of a cunt.
  • Not Synced
I was married to a Scot for 14 years,
  • Not Synced
so I said, "Cunt means many
    different things in different countries."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
"But I'm pretty sure you epitomize
the global standard of a dick."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
I've tried to rise above it,
  • Not Synced
I've tried to get in the trenches,
  • Not Synced
but mostly I would scroll through
    these social media platforms
  • Not Synced
    with one eye partially closed,
  • Not Synced
    trying not to see it,
  • Not Synced
    but you can't make
a cucumber out of a pickle.
  • Not Synced
    What is seen goes in.
  • Not Synced
    It's traumatic.
  • Not Synced
And I was always secretly hoping
    in some part of me
  • Not Synced
that what was being said to me
    and about me wasn't true.
  • Not Synced
    Because even I,
  • Not Synced
    an avowed, self-declared feminist,
  • Not Synced
who worships at the altar of Gloria --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    internalize the patriarchy.
  • Not Synced
    This is really critical.
  • Not Synced
Patriarchy is not boys and men.
  • Not Synced
It is a system in which
    we all participate,
  • Not Synced
    including me.
  • Not Synced
    On that particular day,
  • Not Synced
for some reason that particular tweet
    after the basketball game
  • Not Synced
triggered something called a cyber mob.
  • Not Synced
    This vitriolic, global outpouring
of the most heinous hate speech:
  • Not Synced
    death threats, rape threats,
  • Not Synced
    and don't you know,
  • Not Synced
when I was sitting at home
    alone in my nightgown,
  • Not Synced
    I got a phone call,
  • Not Synced
and it was my beloved former husband,
  • Not Synced
and he said on a voicemail,
  • Not Synced
    "Loved one,
  • Not Synced
what is happening to you is not OK."
  • Not Synced
And there was something about him
taking a stand for me that night
  • Not Synced
    that allowed me
to take a stand for myself.
  • Not Synced
    And I started to write.
  • Not Synced
I started to write about sharing
the fact that I'm a survivor
  • Not Synced
of all forms of sexual abuse,
  • Not Synced
    including three rapes.
  • Not Synced
    And the hate speech
I get in response to that --
  • Not Synced
these are just some of the comments
    posted to news outlets.
  • Not Synced
Being told I'm a "snitch" is really fun.
  • Not Synced
[Jay: She enjoyed every second of it!!!!!]
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Jesus.
  • Not Synced
    AJ: Thank you, Jesus
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
May your grace and mercy shine.
  • Not Synced
So I wrote this feminist op-ed,
  • Not Synced
it is entitled, "Forget Your Team:
  • Not Synced
It is Your Online Gender Violence
    Toward Girls and Women
  • Not Synced
that Can Kiss My Righteous Ass."
  • Not Synced
    (Laugther)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    And I did that alone,
  • Not Synced
    and I published it alone,
  • Not Synced
    because my chief advisor
    said, "Please don't,
  • Not Synced
    the rain of retaliatory garbage
    that is inevitable,
  • Not Synced
    I fear for you."
  • Not Synced
    But I trust girls,
  • Not Synced
    and I trust women,
  • Not Synced
    and I trust our aliies.
  • Not Synced
    It was pulished,
  • Not Synced
    it went viral,
  • Not Synced
it proves that every single day
  • Not Synced
    online misogyny is a phenomenon
    endured by us all,
  • Not Synced
    all over the world,
  • Not Synced
    and when it is intersectional,
  • Not Synced
    it is worse.
  • Not Synced
    Sexual orientation,
  • Not Synced
    gender identity,
  • Not Synced
    race, ethnicity, religion --
  • Not Synced
    you name it,
  • Not Synced
    it amplifies the violence
    endured by girls and women,
  • Not Synced
    and for our younger girls,
  • Not Synced
    it is worse.
  • Not Synced
    It's clearly traumatizing.
  • Not Synced
    Our mental health,
  • Not Synced
    our emotional well-being,
  • Not Synced
    are so gravely effected,
  • Not Synced
    because the threat of violence
  • Not Synced
    is experienced
    neurobiologically as violence.
  • Not Synced
    The cortisol shoots up,
  • Not Synced
    the limbic system gets fired,
  • Not Synced
    we lose productivity at work.
  • Not Synced
    And let's talk about work.
  • Not Synced
Our ability to work is constrained.
  • Not Synced
Online searches of women applying for jobs
    reveal nude pictures of them,
  • Not Synced
    false allegations --
  • Not Synced
    they have STDs --
  • Not Synced
    their addresses indicating
that they are available for sex
  • Not Synced
    with real examples of people
showing up at the his house
  • Not Synced
    for said sex.
  • Not Synced
Our ability to go to school is impaired.
  • Not Synced
    96 percent of all postings
of sexual images [in] our young people:
  • Not Synced
    girls.
  • Not Synced
    Our girls.
  • Not Synced
    Our boys are two-to-three
    times more likely --
  • Not Synced
    non-consensually --
  • Not Synced
    to share images.
  • Not Synced
And I want to say a word
    about revenge porn.
  • Not Synced
Part of what came out of this tweet
  • Not Synced
was my getting connected with allies
    and other activists
  • Not Synced
who are fighting for a safe
    and free Internet.
  • Not Synced
    We started something
    called the Speech Project:
  • Not Synced
    curbing abuse,
  • Not Synced
    expanding freedom.
  • Not Synced
    And that website provides
    a critical forum,
  • Not Synced
because there is no global, legal thing
to help us figure this out.
  • Not Synced
But we do provide on that website
    a standardized list of definitions,
  • Not Synced
    because it's hard to attack
a behavior in the right way
  • Not Synced
if we're not all sharing a definition
    of what that behavior is.
  • Not Synced
And I learned that revenge porn
    is often dangerously misapplied.
  • Not Synced
    It is the non-consensual
    sharing of an image
  • Not Synced
    used tacticly to shame
and humiliate a girl or woman
  • Not Synced
    that attempts to pornogrpiphy us.
  • Not Synced
    Our natural sexuality is --
  • Not Synced
    I don't know about yours --
  • Not Synced
    pretty gorgeous and wonderful.
  • Not Synced
And my expressing it does not
    pornography make.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
So I have all these resources,
  • Not Synced
    that I'm keenly aware --
  • Not Synced
so many people in the world do not.
  • Not Synced
    I was able to start
    the Speech Project with colleagues.
  • Not Synced
I can often get a social media
    company's attention,
  • Not Synced
    I have a wonderful visit
    to Facebook HQ coming up.
  • Not Synced
    Hasn't helped the idiotic
    reporting standards yet ...
  • Not Synced
I actually pay someone to scrub
    my social media feeds,
  • Not Synced
    attempting to spare my brain
  • Not Synced
    the daily iterations
of the trauma of hate speech.
  • Not Synced
    And guess what?
  • Not Synced
I get hate speech for that.
  • Not Synced
"Oh, you live in an echo chamber."
  • Not Synced
    Well, guess what?
  • Not Synced
    Having someone post a photograph
of me with my mouth open
  • Not Synced
saying they can't wait to cum on my face,
  • Not Synced
I have a right to set that boundary.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    This distinction between virtual
    and real is specious
  • Not Synced
    because guess what --
  • Not Synced
that actually happened to me once
    when I was a child,
  • Not Synced
and so that tweet brought up that trauma,
  • Not Synced
and I had to do work on that.
  • Not Synced
But you know what we do?
  • Not Synced
We take all of this hate speech,
  • Not Synced
    and we disaggragate it,
  • Not Synced
    and we code it,
  • Not Synced
    and we give that data,
  • Not Synced
    so that we understand
    the intersectionality of it.
  • Not Synced
    When I get porn,
  • Not Synced
    when it's about political affiliation,
  • Not Synced
    when it's about age,
  • Not Synced
when it's about all of it.
  • Not Synced
We're going to win this fight.
  • Not Synced
There are a lot of solutions --
  • Not Synced
    thank goodness.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to offer just a few,
  • Not Synced
and of course I challenge you
to create and contribute your own.
  • Not Synced
    Number one:
  • Not Synced
    we have to start
    with digital media literacy,
  • Not Synced
and clearly it must have a gendered lens.
  • Not Synced
    Kids, schools, caregivers, parents:
  • Not Synced
    it's essential.
  • Not Synced
    Two:
  • Not Synced
should we talk about our friends in tech?
  • Not Synced
    Said with dignity and respect,
  • Not Synced
the sexism in your workplaces must end.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    (Cheers)
  • Not Synced
    EDGE,
  • Not Synced
the global standard for gender equality,
  • Not Synced
    is the minimum standard.
  • Not Synced
    And guess what, Silicon Valley,
  • Not Synced
    if L'Oreal in India
  • Not Synced
    and the Phillipines,
  • Not Synced
    and Brazil,
  • Not Synced
and in Russia and can do it,
  • Not Synced
    you can, too.
  • Not Synced
    Enough excuses.
  • Not Synced
Only when women have critical mass
in every department in your companies,
  • Not Synced
    including building platforms
    from the ground up,
  • Not Synced
    will the conversations about priorities
    and solutions change.
  • Not Synced
And more love for my friends in tech:
  • Not Synced
    profiteering off misogyny
    in video games must end.
  • Not Synced
I'm so tired of hearing you talk
to me at cocktail parties --
  • Not Synced
    like you did a couple
    weeks ago in Aspen --
  • Not Synced
    about how deplorable #gamergate was
  • Not Synced
    when you're still making billions
    of dollars off games
  • Not Synced
that maim and dump women for sport.
  • Not Synced
    Basta,
  • Not Synced
    as the Italians would say.
  • Not Synced
    Enough.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Our friends in law enforcement
    have much to do,
  • Not Synced
    because we've seen
  • Not Synced
that online violence is an extension
    of in person violence.
  • Not Synced
    In our country,
  • Not Synced
more girls and women have been
    murdered by their intimate partners
  • Not Synced
    than died on 9/11
  • Not Synced
and have died since in Afghanistan
    and Iraq combined.
  • Not Synced
And it's not "cool" to say that,
  • Not Synced
    but it is true.
  • Not Synced
    We care so much geopolitically
about what men are doing over there
  • Not Synced
    to women over there ...
  • Not Synced
    In 2015,
  • Not Synced
    72,828 women used intimate
partner violence services in this country.
  • Not Synced
That is not counting the girls
and women and boys who needed them.
  • Not Synced
    Law enforcement must be empowered
  • Not Synced
    with up-to-date Internet technology,
  • Not Synced
    the devices,
  • Not Synced
    and an understanding
    of these platforms --
  • Not Synced
    how they work.
  • Not Synced
The police wanted to be helpful
    when Amanda Hesse called
  • Not Synced
    about the death threat
    she was getting on Twitter,
  • Not Synced
but they couldn't really when they said,
  • Not Synced
    "What's Twitter?"
  • Not Synced
Our legislators must write and pass
    astute legislation
  • Not Synced
    that reflects today's technology
  • Not Synced
and our notions of free and hate speech.
  • Not Synced
    In New York recently,
  • Not Synced
the law could not be applied
    to a perpetrator
  • Not Synced
    because the crimes must
    have been committed --
  • Not Synced
even if it was anonymous --
  • Not Synced
    they must have been committed
    by telephone, in mail,
  • Not Synced
    by telegraph --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    The language must be
    technologically neutral.
  • Not Synced
    So apparently,
  • Not Synced
I've got a pretty bold voice.
  • Not Synced
So let's talk about your friends ...
  • Not Synced
    white men.
  • Not Synced
You have a role to play
    and a choice to make.
  • Not Synced
    You can do something,
  • Not Synced
    or you can do nothing.
  • Not Synced
    We're cool in this room,
  • Not Synced
    but when this goes out
    everyone will say,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh my god,
  • Not Synced
    she's a reverse racist."
  • Not Synced
That quote was said by a white man,
  • Not Synced
    Robert Morris,
  • Not Synced
    chairperson Price Waterhouse Cooper,
  • Not Synced
he asked me to include it in my talk.
  • Not Synced
We need to grow support lines
    and help groups,
  • Not Synced
so victims can help each other
  • Not Synced
    when their lives and finances
    have been derailed.
  • Not Synced
    We must as individuals disrupt
gender violence as it is happening.
  • Not Synced
    92 percent of young people,
  • Not Synced
    29 and under,
  • Not Synced
    witness it.
  • Not Synced
72 percent of us have witnessed it.
  • Not Synced
We must have the courage and urgency
  • Not Synced
    to practice stopping it
    as it is unfolding.
  • Not Synced
    And lastly,
  • Not Synced
    believe her.
  • Not Synced
    Believe her.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    This is fundamentally a problem
    of human interaction.
  • Not Synced
    I believe that human interaction
is at the core of our healing.
  • Not Synced
    Trauma not transformed
    will be trauma transferred.
  • Not Synced
    Edith Horton said,
  • Not Synced
"The end is latent in the beginning,"
  • Not Synced
so we are going to end this talk
replacing hate speech with love speech.
  • Not Synced
Because I get lonely in this,
  • Not Synced
but I know that we are allies.
  • Not Synced
    I recently learned
  • Not Synced
    about how gratitude and affirmations
    offset negative interactions.
  • Not Synced
It takes five of those to offset
    one negative interaction,
  • Not Synced
    and gratitude in particular --
  • Not Synced
    free, available globally
    any time, anywhere,
  • Not Synced
    to anyone in any dialect.
  • Not Synced
It fires the pregenual anterior cingulate,
  • Not Synced
a watershed part of the brain,
  • Not Synced
that floods it with great, good stuff.
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to say awesome
    stuff about myself.
  • Not Synced
    I would like for you
to reflect it back to me.
  • Not Synced
It might sound something like this --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
I am a powerful and strong woman,
  • Not Synced
and you would say, "Yes you are."
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Yes your are.
  • Not Synced
    My mama loves me.
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Yes she does.
  • Not Synced
I did a great job with my talk.
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Yes you did.
  • Not Synced
I have a right to be here.
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Yes you do.
  • Not Synced
    I'm really cute.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Yes you are.
  • Not Synced
    God does good work.
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Yes he does.
  • Not Synced
    And I love you.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you so much
  • Not Synced
for letting me be of service.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
