The optimism bias

0:01 - 0:02I'm going to talk to you about optimism --
-
0:02 - 0:05or more precisely, the optimism bias.
-
0:05 - 0:07It's a cognitive illusion
-
0:07 - 0:10that we've been studying in my lab for the past few years,
-
0:10 - 0:12and 80 percent of us have it.
-
0:12 - 0:13It's our tendency to overestimate
-
0:13 - 0:18our likelihood of experiencing good events in our lives
-
0:18 - 0:20and underestimate our likelihood of experiencing bad events.
-
0:20 - 0:25So we underestimate our likelihood of suffering from cancer,
-
0:25 - 0:26being in a car accident.
-
0:26 - 0:29We overestimate our longevity, our career prospects.
-
0:29 - 0:32In short, we're more optimistic than realistic,
-
0:32 - 0:35but we are oblivious to the fact.
-
0:35 - 0:36Take marriage for example.
-
0:36 - 0:40In the Western World, divorce rates are about 40 percent.
-
0:40 - 0:44That means that out of five married couples,
-
0:44 - 0:47two will end up splitting their assets.
-
0:47 - 0:51But when you ask newlyweds about their own likelihood of divorce,
-
0:51 - 0:54they estimate it at zero percent.
-
0:54 - 0:57And even divorce lawyers, who should really know better,
-
0:57 - 1:01hugely underestimate their own likelihood of divorce.
-
1:01 - 1:04So it turns out that optimists are not less likely to divorce,
-
1:04 - 1:07but they are more likely to remarry.
-
1:07 - 1:09In the words of Samuel Johnson,
-
1:09 - 1:14"Remarriage is the triumph of hope over experience."
-
1:14 - 1:15(Laughter)
-
1:15 - 1:20So if we're married, we're more likely to have kids.
-
1:20 - 1:23And we all think our kids will be especially talented.
-
1:23 - 1:26This, by the way, is my two-year-old nephew, Guy.
-
1:26 - 1:29And I just want to make it absolutely clear
-
1:29 - 1:31that he's a really bad example of the optimism bias,
-
1:31 - 1:34because he is in fact uniquely talented.
-
1:34 - 1:35(Laughter)
-
1:35 - 1:37And I'm not alone.
-
1:37 - 1:38Out of four British people, three said
-
1:38 - 1:43that they were optimistic about the future of their own families.
-
1:43 - 1:45That's 75 percent.
-
1:45 - 1:47But only 30 percent said
-
1:47 - 1:50that they thought families in general
-
1:50 - 1:52are doing better than a few generations ago.
-
1:52 - 1:54And this is a really important point,
-
1:54 - 1:55because we're optimistic about ourselves,
-
1:55 - 1:57we're optimistic about our kids,
-
1:57 - 2:00we're optimistic about our families,
-
2:00 - 2:03but we're not so optimistic about the guy sitting next to us,
-
2:03 - 2:04and we're somewhat pessimistic
-
2:04 - 2:09about the fate of our fellow citizens and the fate of our country.
-
2:09 - 2:13But private optimism about our own personal future
-
2:13 - 2:14remains persistent.
-
2:14 - 2:18And it doesn't mean that we think things will magically turn out okay,
-
2:18 - 2:22but rather that we have the unique ability to make it so.
-
2:22 - 2:25Now I'm a scientist, I do experiments.
-
2:25 - 2:26So to show you what I mean,
-
2:26 - 2:30I'm going to do an experiment here with you.
-
2:30 - 2:34So I'm going to give you a list of abilities and characteristics,
-
2:34 - 2:37and I want you to think for each of these abilities
-
2:37 - 2:40where you stand relative to the rest of the population.
-
2:40 - 2:45The first one is getting along well with others.
-
2:45 - 2:49Who here believes they're at the bottom 25 percent?
-
2:49 - 2:53Okay, that's about 10 people out of 1,500.
-
2:53 - 2:58Who believes they're at the top 25 percent?
-
2:58 - 3:02That's most of us here.
-
3:02 - 3:05Okay, now do the same for your driving ability.
-
3:05 - 3:09How interesting are you?
-
3:09 - 3:11How attractive are you?
-
3:11 - 3:15How honest are you?
-
3:15 - 3:18And finally, how modest are you?
-
3:18 - 3:23So most of us put ourselves above average
-
3:23 - 3:24on most of these abilities.
-
3:24 - 3:27Now this is statistically impossible.
-
3:27 - 3:29We can't all be better than everyone else.
-
3:29 - 3:32(Laughter)
-
3:32 - 3:35But if we believe we're better than the other guy,
-
3:35 - 3:39well that means that we're more likely to get that promotion, to remain married.
-
3:39 - 3:40Because we're more social, more interesting.
-
3:40 - 3:43And it's a global phenomenon.
-
3:43 - 3:45The optimism bias has been observed
-
3:45 - 3:47in many different countries --
-
3:47 - 3:50in Western cultures, in non-Western cultures,
-
3:50 - 3:51in females and males,
-
3:51 - 3:54in kids, in the elderly.
-
3:54 - 3:54It's quite widespread.
-
3:54 - 3:56But the question is, Is it good for us?
-
3:56 - 4:01So some people say no.
-
4:01 - 4:04Some people say the secret to happiness
-
4:04 - 4:07is low expectations.
-
4:07 - 4:09I think the logic goes something like this:
-
4:09 - 4:10If we don't expect greatness,
-
4:10 - 4:15if we don't expect to find love and be healthy and successful,
-
4:15 - 4:18well we're not going to be disappointed when these things don't happen.
-
4:18 - 4:22And if we're not disappointed when good things don't happen,
-
4:22 - 4:23and we're pleasantly surprised when they do,
-
4:23 - 4:25we will be happy.
-
4:25 - 4:28So it's a very good theory,
-
4:28 - 4:30but it turns out to be wrong for three reasons.
-
4:30 - 4:36Number one: Whatever happens, whether you succeed or you fail,
-
4:36 - 4:37people with high expectations always feel better.
-
4:37 - 4:43Because how we feel when we get dumped or win employee of the month
-
4:43 - 4:45depends on how we interpret that event.
-
4:45 - 4:50The psychologists Margaret Marshall and John Brown
-
4:50 - 4:52studied students with high and low expectations.
-
4:52 - 4:56And they found that when people with high expectations succeed,
-
4:56 - 5:00they attribute that success to their own traits.
-
5:00 - 5:02"I'm a genius, therefore I got an A,
-
5:02 - 5:05therefore I'll get an A again and again in the future."
-
5:05 - 5:08When they failed, it wasn't because they were dumb,
-
5:08 - 5:11but because the exam just happened to be unfair.
-
5:11 - 5:13Next time they will do better.
-
5:13 - 5:16People with low expectations do the opposite.
-
5:16 - 5:20So when they failed it was because they were dumb,
-
5:20 - 5:21and when they succeeded
-
5:21 - 5:24it was because the exam just happened to be really easy.
-
5:24 - 5:26Next time reality would catch up with them.
-
5:26 - 5:29So they felt worse.
-
5:29 - 5:32Number two: Regardless of the outcome,
-
5:32 - 5:36the pure act of anticipation makes us happy.
-
5:36 - 5:39The behavioral economist George Lowenstein
-
5:39 - 5:40asked students in his university
-
5:40 - 5:44to imagine getting a passionate kiss from a celebrity, any celebrity.
-
5:44 - 5:47Then he said, "How much are you willing to pay
-
5:47 - 5:50to get a kiss from a celebrity
-
5:50 - 5:52if the kiss was delivered immediately,
-
5:52 - 5:58in three hours, in 24 hours, in three days,
-
5:58 - 5:59in one year, in 10 years?
-
5:59 - 6:02He found that the students were willing to pay the most
-
6:02 - 6:05not to get a kiss immediately,
-
6:05 - 6:08but to get a kiss in three days.
-
6:08 - 6:11They were willing to pay extra in order to wait.
-
6:11 - 6:14Now they weren't willing to wait a year or 10 years;
-
6:14 - 6:16no one wants an aging celebrity.
-
6:16 - 6:21But three days seemed to be the optimum amount.
-
6:21 - 6:23So why is that?
-
6:23 - 6:27Well if you get the kiss now, it's over an done with.
-
6:27 - 6:28But if you get the kiss in three days,
-
6:28 - 6:33well that's three days of jittery anticipation, the thrill of the wait.
-
6:33 - 6:35The students wanted that time
-
6:35 - 6:38to imagine where is it going to happen,
-
6:38 - 6:39how is it going to happen.
-
6:39 - 6:40Anticipation made them happy.
-
6:40 - 6:45This is, by the way, why people prefer Friday to Sunday.
-
6:45 - 6:48It's a really curious fact.
-
6:48 - 6:51Because Friday is a day of work and Sunday is a day of pleasure,
-
6:51 - 6:53so you'd assume that people will prefer Sunday,
-
6:53 - 6:56but they don't.
-
6:56 - 6:58It's not because they really, really like being in the office
-
6:58 - 6:59and they can't stand strolling in the park
-
6:59 - 7:02or having a lazy brunch.
-
7:02 - 7:02We know that, because when you ask people
-
7:02 - 7:04about their ultimate favorite day of the week,
-
7:04 - 7:08surprise, surprise, Saturday comes in at first,
-
7:08 - 7:12then Friday, then Sunday.
-
7:12 - 7:13People prefer Friday
-
7:13 - 7:18because Friday brings with it the anticipation of the weekend ahead,
-
7:18 - 7:20all the plans that you have.
-
7:20 - 7:22On Sunday, the only thing you can look forward to
-
7:22 - 7:23is the work week.
-
7:23 - 7:30So optimists are people who expect more kisses in their future,
-
7:30 - 7:30more strolls in the park.
-
7:30 - 7:36And that anticipation enhances their wellbeing.
-
7:36 - 7:38In fact, without the optimism bias,
-
7:38 - 7:41we would all slightly depressed.
-
7:41 - 7:43People with mild depression,
-
7:43 - 7:46they don't have a bias when they look into the future.
-
7:46 - 7:50They're actually more realistic than healthy individuals.
-
7:50 - 7:53But individuals with severe depression,
-
7:53 - 7:54they have a pessimistic bias.
-
7:54 - 7:57So they tend to expect the future
-
7:57 - 7:59to be worse than it ends up being.
-
7:59 - 8:03So optimism changes subjective reality.
-
8:03 - 8:07The way we expect the world to be changes the way we see it.
-
8:07 - 8:09But it also changes objective reality.
-
8:09 - 8:12It acts as a self-fulfilling prophecy.
-
8:12 - 8:15And that is the third reason
-
8:15 - 8:17why lowering your expectations will not make you happy.
-
8:17 - 8:20Controlled experiments have shown
-
8:20 - 8:23that optimism is not only related to success,
-
8:23 - 8:24it leads to success.
-
8:24 - 8:29Optimism leads to success in academia and sports and politics.
-
8:29 - 8:33And maybe the most surprising benefit of optimism is health.
-
8:33 - 8:37If we expect the future to be bright,
-
8:37 - 8:40stress and anxiety are reduced.
-
8:40 - 8:43So all in all, optimism has lots of benefits.
-
8:43 - 8:48But the question that was really confusing to me was,
-
8:48 - 8:51How do we maintain optimism in the face of reality?
-
8:51 - 8:55As an neuroscientist, this was especially confusing,
-
8:55 - 8:58because according to all the theories out there,
-
8:58 - 9:03when your expectations are not met, you should alter them.
-
9:03 - 9:04But this is not what we find.
-
9:04 - 9:07We asked people to come into our lab
-
9:07 - 9:09in order to try and figure out what was going on.
-
9:09 - 9:12We asked them to estimate their likelihood
-
9:12 - 9:14of experiencing different terrible events in their lives.
-
9:14 - 9:20So for example, what is your likelihood of suffering from cancer?
-
9:20 - 9:20And then we told them the average likelihood
-
9:20 - 9:25of someone like them to suffer these misfortunes.
-
9:25 - 9:27So cancer, for example, is about 30 percent.
-
9:27 - 9:31And then we asked them again,
-
9:31 - 9:32How likely are you to suffer from cancer?
-
9:32 - 9:36What we wanted to know
-
9:36 - 9:39was whether people will take the information that we gave them
-
9:39 - 9:41to change their beliefs.
-
9:41 - 9:44And indeed they did --
-
9:44 - 9:45but mostly when the information we gave them
-
9:45 - 9:48was better that what they expected.
-
9:48 - 9:49So for example,
-
9:49 - 9:52if someone said, "My likelihood of suffering from cancer
-
9:52 - 9:54is about 50 percent,"
-
9:54 - 9:58and we said, "Hey, good news.
-
9:58 - 10:01The average likelihood is only 30 percent,"
-
10:01 - 10:02the next time around they would say,
-
10:02 - 10:05"Well maybe my likelihood is about 35 percent."
-
10:05 - 10:07So they learned quickly and efficiently.
-
10:07 - 10:09But if someone started off saying,
-
10:09 - 10:13"My average likelihood of suffering from cancer is about 10 percent,"
-
10:13 - 10:17and we said, "Hey, bad news.
-
10:17 - 10:19The average likelihood is about 30 percent,"
-
10:19 - 10:21they next time around they would say,
-
10:21 - 10:25"Yep. Still think it's about 11 percent."
-
10:25 - 10:26(Laughter)
-
10:26 - 10:28So it's not that they didn't learn at all -- they did --
-
10:28 - 10:32but much, much less than when we gave them
-
10:32 - 10:34positive information about the future.
-
10:34 - 10:37And it's not that they didn't remember the numbers that we gave them;
-
10:37 - 10:40everyone remembers that the average likelihood of cancer
-
10:40 - 10:41is about 30 percent
-
10:41 - 10:44and the average likelihood of divorce is about 40 percent.
-
10:44 - 10:48But they didn't think that those numbers were related to them.
-
10:48 - 10:51What this means is that warning signs such as these
-
10:51 - 10:55may only have limited impact.
-
10:55 - 10:59Yes, smoking kills, but mostly it kills the other guy.
-
10:59 - 11:03What I wanted to know
-
11:03 - 11:05was what was going on inside the human brain
-
11:05 - 11:09that prevented us from taking these warning signs personally.
-
11:09 - 11:12But at the same time, when we hear that the housing market is hopeful,
-
11:12 - 11:16we think, "Oh, my house is definitely going to double in price."
-
11:16 - 11:19To try and figure that out,
-
11:19 - 11:21I asked the participants in the experiment
-
11:21 - 11:24to lie in a brain imaging scanner.
-
11:24 - 11:25It looks like this.
-
11:25 - 11:28And using a method called functional MRI,
-
11:28 - 11:32we were able to identify regions in the brain
-
11:32 - 11:35that were responding to positive information.
-
11:35 - 11:38One of these regions is called the left inferior frontal gyrus.
-
11:38 - 11:42So if someone said, "My likelihood of suffering from cancer is 50 percent,"
-
11:42 - 11:44and we said, "Hey, good news.
-
11:44 - 11:45Average likelihood is 30 percent,"
-
11:45 - 11:50the left inferior frontal gyrus would respond fiercely.
-
11:50 - 11:52And it didn't matter if you're an extreme optimist, a mild optimist
-
11:52 - 11:54or slightly pessimistic,
-
11:54 - 12:00everyone's left inferior frontal gyrus
-
12:00 - 12:00was functioning perfectly well,
-
12:00 - 12:04whether you're Barack Obama or Woody Allen.
-
12:04 - 12:05On the other side of the brain,
-
12:05 - 12:10the right inferior frontal gyrus was responding to bad news.
-
12:10 - 12:14And here's the thing, it wasn't doing a very good job.
-
12:14 - 12:16The more optimistic you were,
-
12:16 - 12:17the less likely this region was
-
12:17 - 12:21to respond to unexpected negative information.
-
12:21 - 12:23And if your brain is failing
-
12:23 - 12:28at integrating bad news about the future,
-
12:28 - 12:32you will constantly leave your rose-tinted spectacles on.
-
12:32 - 12:36So we wanted to know could we change this.
-
12:36 - 12:40Could we alter people's optimism bias
-
12:40 - 12:44by interfering with the brain activity in these regions?
-
12:44 - 12:47And there's a way for us to do that.
-
12:47 - 12:49This is my collaborator Ryota Kanai.
-
12:49 - 12:54And what he's doing is he's passing a small magnetic pulse
-
12:54 - 12:56through the skull of the participant in our study
-
12:56 - 12:58into their inferior frontal gyrus.
-
12:58 - 13:00And my doing that,
-
13:00 - 13:02he's interfering with the activity of this brain region
-
13:02 - 13:05for about half an hour.
-
13:05 - 13:06After that everything goes back to normal, I assure you.
-
13:06 - 13:08(Laughter)
-
13:08 - 13:10So let's see what happens.
-
13:10 - 13:15First of all, I'm going to show you
-
13:15 - 13:16the average amount of bias that we see.
-
13:16 - 13:20So if I was to test all of you now,
-
13:20 - 13:22this is the amount that you would learn
-
13:22 - 13:24more from good news relative to bad news.
-
13:24 - 13:28Now we interfere with the region
-
13:28 - 13:31that we found to integrate negative information in this task,
-
13:31 - 13:34and the optimism bias grew even larger.
-
13:34 - 13:41We made people more biased in the way that they process information.
-
13:41 - 13:44Then we interfered with the brain region
-
13:44 - 13:48that we found to integrate good news in this task,
-
13:48 - 13:50and the optimism bias disappeared.
-
13:50 - 13:54We were quite amazed by these results
-
13:54 - 13:56because we were able to eliminate
-
13:56 - 13:58a deep-rooted bias in humans.
-
13:58 - 14:02And at this point we stopped and we asked ourselves,
-
14:02 - 14:08Would we want to shatter the optimism illusion into tiny little bits?
-
14:08 - 14:13If we could do that, would we want to take people's optimism bias away?
-
14:13 - 14:18Well I've already told you about all of the benefits of the optimism bias,
-
14:18 - 14:23which probably makes you want hold onto it for dear life.
-
14:23 - 14:24But there are, of course, pitfalls,
-
14:24 - 14:28and it would be really foolish of us to ignore them.
-
14:28 - 14:31Take for example this email I recieved
-
14:31 - 14:34from a firefighter here in California.
-
14:34 - 14:37He says, "Fatality investigations for firefighters
-
14:37 - 14:40often include 'we didn't think the fire was going to do that'
-
14:40 - 14:43even when all of the available information
-
14:43 - 14:46was there to make safe decisions."
-
14:46 - 14:50This captain is going to use our findings on the optimism bias
-
14:50 - 14:51to try and explain to the firefighters
-
14:51 - 14:54why they think the way they do,
-
14:54 - 15:00to make them acutely aware of this very optimistic bias in humans.
-
15:00 - 15:06So unrealistic optimism can lead to risky behavior,
-
15:06 - 15:09to financial collapse, to faulty planning.
-
15:09 - 15:12The British government, for example,
-
15:12 - 15:16has a acknowledged that the optimism bias
-
15:16 - 15:18can make individuals more likely
-
15:18 - 15:22to underestimate the costs and durations of projects.
-
15:22 - 15:26So they have adjusted the 2012 Olympic budget for the optimism bias.
-
15:26 - 15:30My friend who's getting married in a few weeks
-
15:30 - 15:33has done the same for his wedding budget.
-
15:33 - 15:36And by the way, when I asked him about his own likelihood of divorce,
-
15:36 - 15:40he said he was quite sure it was zero percent.
-
15:40 - 15:42So what we would really like to do,
-
15:42 - 15:46is we would like to protect ourselves from the dangers of optimism,
-
15:46 - 15:51but at the same time remain hopeful,
-
15:51 - 15:52benefiting from the many fruits of optimism.
-
15:52 - 15:56And I believe there's a way for us to do that.
-
15:56 - 15:57The key here really is knowledge.
-
15:57 - 16:00We're not born with an innate understanding of our biases.
-
16:00 - 16:03These have to be identified by scientific investigation.
-
16:03 - 16:08But the good news is that becoming aware of the optimism bias
-
16:08 - 16:10does not shatter the illusion.
-
16:10 - 16:12It's like visual illusions
-
16:12 - 16:16in which understanding them does not make them go away.
-
16:16 - 16:20And this is good because it means we should be able to strike a balance,
-
16:20 - 16:24to come up with plans and rules
-
16:24 - 16:24to protect ourselves from unrealistic optimism,
-
16:24 - 16:29but at the same time remain hopeful.

16:29 - 16:31I think this cartoon portrays it nicely.
-
16:31 - 16:36Because if you're one of these pessimistic penguins up there
-
16:36 - 16:38who just does not believe they can fly,
-
16:38 - 16:41you certainly never will.
-
16:41 - 16:42Because to make any kind of progress,
-
16:42 - 16:44we need to be able to imagine a different reality,
-
16:44 - 16:46and then we need to believe that that reality is possible.
-
16:49 - 16:52But if you are an extreme optimistic penguin
-
16:52 - 16:55who just jumps down blindly hoping for the best,
-
16:55 - 16:58you might find yourself in a bit of a mess when you hit the ground.
-
16:58 - 17:00But if you're an optimistic penguin
-
17:00 - 17:06who believes they can fly, but adjusts a parachute to your back
-
17:06 - 17:08just in case things don't work out exactly as you had planned,
-
17:08 - 17:10you will soar like an eagle,
-
17:10 - 17:13even if you're just a penguin.
